I am a fairly new EDA but I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the unforgettable Hot Dog Fest 97. It was one of the greatest experiences I've had in a long time. My friend Mike Cherman (also and EDA) and I went to the near perfect tour ending show in San Diego. As if the excitement of seeing Jewel and the 'Burns wasn't enough, we met numerous other EDAs there. It all started when we ran into Liz and Tegan that Mike remembered from the Pajama party with Jewel. We didn't have their front row seats but it was exciting anyway. After the show we went toward the stage to see Steve that had come out to sign autographs. While we were up there we thought we would ask one of the stage managers if we could get one of the candles as a memento from the Tiny Lights Tour. After all, the tour was over. What would they need the candles for? To our surprise the candles are fake. They are all connected with wires and have bulbs that give off the flickering light. How stupid did we feel? We were right up against the stage and we couldn't tell that the candles were fake. They even had fake melted wax. Well, we got all three of the Rugburns to sign our CD and afterward we just kinda hung around talking to a few people. Like I said before, we are new members of the EDAs so we really didn't know anyone. We new most of the people standing around were EDAs and we had received E-mail from probably all of them but we couldn't put faces to names. We talked to Dennis who referred us to Tegan. She was nice enough to introduce us to Nancy and Tom. They were so incredibly nice that I can't thank them enough for their kindness. When we got to the Hot Dog Fest in the morning around 11:00, people were still getting set up. John-Eric, Jason, and Luna were singing along to the guitar. Sometimes we got up to ten people singing together. Luna has a beautiful voice. I don't think John-Eric sang as bad as Jason said in his letter, it just got a little scary when they started to sing "Enter From the East." Just one more reason why Jewel has a record contract and we don't. There was lots of food. It was impossible to go hungry. It was great to meet so many EDAs. Especially all of the wonderful members from back East that, under normal circumstances, we wouldn't have had the pleasure of meeting. One of the highlights of the day had to be the interview with Steve and Stinky. I had a microcasset recorder on hand to capture the event but we were all laughing so hard that you can barely even hear their voices. It was a first for me to meet the band up close. Their stories were straight comedy. It would be great to get somebody to go along and document their road trips because in would make a great movie. Next, Steve and Stinky gave us a private concert. Let me tell you, it was breathtaking. These guys have shear talent. I heard a few songs that I had never heard before. I'm sure someone has the set list. All and All, it was just a perfect ending to a great Tour. So many beautiful people gathered together in a beautiful home. I even got a Jewel and Rugburn word-search from the girls (that I still haven't completed.) I'll see some of you at the 'Burns concert on Friday night and to all of the rest of you EDAs (almost a thousand now) reach out Everyday and be an Angel. I'll see you in Texas at the Rockfest in June. Well Thirza, ya just got me to feel as old as I really am. Carl Perkins is a Rock and Roll legend as he is the dude that took the song "Blue Suede Shoes" to #2 on the Billboard Charts back in March of 1956. It's his version heard mostly on the oldies shows, and not Elvis'. The two versions sound very similar (even released the same year), and I've won more than few bets with people when "Blue Suede Shoes" was playing on the radio and we bet whether it was Elvis or Carl. (most of them had never heard of Carl and I know the two versions well so it's easy to tell the two apart, I ain't lost yet on that bet yet:) Mike P.S. Interesting theory though Thirza! A lot of people in my hall at Purdue liked this, so here is my Rugburns influenced song: People Are For Shootin Rivers are for pollutin', Asses are for bootin', Riots are for lootin', And people are for shootin'. Came home last Saturday night, Buzzin' and lookin for a fight. Put a scratch in my new Dodge, So I layed the blame on my best friend Rog. Had him scared, he was shitin' rocks, But I had to hurry home to watch the Sox. So I took out my gat real fast, And popped a cap in his sorry ass. Then there was the time at my birthday party, Got an A-K from Uncle Marty. Nothing could ruin my good mood, Except for grandma's shitty food. She said it was a new cake recipe, I said it sure tasted like crap to me. Whipped out my new gun, pulled the trigger with ease, Filled grams with holes, now she's swiss cheese. (Chorus) Finally got to go to New York, I saw America's favorite dork. Had tickets for Letterman, had seats up front, But I couldn't see straight from that last blunt. All night he hit on my girlfriend Pam, Then he gave her a fuckin' ham. So I showed him my gun, and he ran behind Paul, And now both of their brains decorate the wall. You've heard my stories, now in conclusion, I hope no one's under the illusion, That shooting people is all there is to do, 'Cause "animals are people too." Next time anything living walks down your street, Make sure it winds up as dead meat. Just remember, all you have to do to have fun in this land, Is pull up your pants and put a gun in your hand. (Chorus twice) Let me know what you guys think!!! I have serious songs too, but I thought people would like this one. Oh, and here's one of my favorite stanzas from one of my songs: You have an idea, but it's a collage. You like sports cars, but then buy a Dodge. You work for John Deere, but have tall grass. In regards to Jewel's voice, I can tell something is suffering. I saw her April 1st show in Berkeley, and it did not compare well to earlier shows I have seen. She seemed to be holding back, although it may have had nothing to do with holding back but rather an inability to sing as she once had. It was disapointing. Now, ever since I first read the lyrics or heard the song I guess, I've had this opinion but don't know if most people have caught it. Maybe it's just me reading too much into it in a Freudian way but I always thought there was a rather blatant but simultaneously well hidden reference about tesicles and semen in Jewel's song Race Car Driver. The lines I'm referring to are "Got studded tires excuse me if I'm blunt, I've got ribbed rims for her pleasure up front." Obvious condom reference. Then, "Fuzzy dice with a secret door." Fuzzy dice, like a man's testicles. Then, "filled with flavored syrums breath freshener and more." Semen, comes from testicles, is definitely flavored etc etc etc. Maybe some of you are shocked by this reading, others may have thought the same thing all along, others may not have previously considered it but now that I bring it up it makes sense to you. I thought of that too. Good call, Jon. I know that alot of people comment on how bad her teeth look and how it makes her ugly and she should have them fixed, but I like them. It's like she's so gifted and beautiful and wonderful that she seems almost untouchable and perfect like many of stars today, but when you see that one tiny miniscule imperfection, or more or less defining feature, then you can almost relate to her and see her as a real person, and not just a big star. There is something very sincere and giving about Jewel. I think her fans really love her honesty and reality filled songs and messages in this mixed-up world of lies and deception. The whole song's obviously a big Freudian joke-- "ribbed rims for her pleasure up-front"? Come on! Therefore I think it's wrong to be offended by the possibility that these double-meanings are there, but I also think that there are some things probably better left "veiled." Jon ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Apr 97 16:43:19 -0400 From: Laura Tonn Subject: Racecar driver/testicles semen Hi all, Just wanted to throw my 2cents in here. Sex is a part of life you need to address and accept. Jewel may or may not have meant phrase in such a manner but, she deals with life. Sex and sexual connotations are a part of life. Angels can be curious as to the motivation Jewel had for writing that but Jewel writes about life and this is a part of us, as humans... Sorry If this offended anyone...... Communication is the key. Anyway... Racecar driver has to be one of my favorite songs, because it is solely a FUN song. It has everything from sexual connotations, to just plainly having fun, reread the lyrics again, she talks about doubling stunts and all that jazz :) And to think that Jewel shouldn't be writing about sex is just funny, she sings about everything and she shouldn't exclude that. just my thoughts :) Talk to you all later...
