After reading the Berkeley show review and noticing the minor lyric transcription from the fabulous new song "Enter from the East," I noticed that a central part of my old favorite "Absence of Fear" has been assimilated by the new ditty. What in "AoF" proceeded as "In my heart there's an empty room / It's waiting for lightning it's waiting for you" has transformed into the following lyric from "EftE:" "My heart has three empty rooms / One waiting for lightning and three waiting for you." Miss Kilcher habitually cuts and pastes from old songs into new ones. For example, the phrase "greasy greasy" from "Silver Linings" made it into the short-lived "Grey Matter," and the ancient "Jessica" got reincarnated into "Emily." In the latter case, the new song killed off the old. Jewel never plays "Jessica" anymore, since its replacement is, in her mind I suppose, superior. I've always preferred "Jessica" but hey, if I can't get her to play it I guess I'm stuck with her preferences. Will "Absence of Fear" meet the same fate as "Jessica?" Unless either "AoF" or "EftE" sacrifices the shared lyrics, one must perish. There's an enormous difference between using words like "fragile" throughout one's repertoire, but insignificantly modifying an entire verse is a tad too garish an act to keep both songs alive. I feel "EftE" is a better song, and the music itself doesn't arouse any suspicions of similarity. But the lyrical coordination smacks me in the face. I admit I loved "AoF" just for the music; I always thought it to be a bit lyrically clumsy. But loved it I did, and I hope Jewel keeps it alive by differentiating its lyrics (hopefully improving them) from "EftE." We all know Miss Kilcher has her "themes:" fragility, innocence, hands manifesting thought, etc. "Absence of Fear" may have been just a stepping stone in the development of another recurrent phrase: barren cardiac muscles anticipating inclement weather. Perhaps "Enter from the East" is the culmination of that development, but it could also be just another stepping stone. Sure, I think "Enter from the East" is too good to be replaced, but I thought that about "Absence of Fear" too. Oh well, it's her music. I just listen to it. CGN, Whining Away at the Moon P.S. - The rumors about the Rugburns are true; they are some of the nicest, most patient guys I've ever met, and they seemed nicely impressed that I knew about "Daddy She's a Goddess" (though I was cussing them out for not playing it). They say they love playing that one with Jewel, so why the hell don't they do it? P.P.S. - Selena, could you write me a note that will give Jewel permission to play "Flower" when you're not around? I hear you're the Keymaster for that particular tune. I screamed out a request for it in Berkeley, and Jewel looked in my direction when I did so, then snubbed me by taking some kid's request for "Race Car Driver" instead. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Apr 1997 16:19:16 -0400 (EDT) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: MrBB#3--The Upcoming Schedule-Everything known at present Me again, Heres everything currently known to be scheduled. There had been a lot of problems within the list about newcomers to the list feeling unwelcomed, confused, and totally left out. The list had just gone through the incredible experience of JewelStock, and well over a hundred of us bonded that weekend. When we returned home to our computers, the people on the list became more friends than impersonal Email addresses. A lot of private jokes were started, which not only left the newbies feeling left out, but also the people who didn't get the opportunity to go to JewelStock. As new people joined the list and asked the same questions over and over ( because, obviously, they had no way to know the answers otherwise ) a lot of tension was created on the list. Some of the list veterans were getting annoyed with the fact that the newbies didn't know much about how a mailing list works, or the basic points of Jewel's past, and the list's past. There were a few newbies who got extremely upset over the fact that they didn't think anyone was welcoming them into our group. It got a bit ugly for a while, and when it finally settled down, people began to see both sides of the issue. The idea came up for something called "Adopt A Newbie"- a way for new list members to be "adopted" by list veterans, therefore feeling like a part of the group. This is how AAN basically works : The Whole Point In creating AAN, I hope to help newbies from feeling unwanted and uninformed. Everyone on this list was a newbie at one point, and we all struggled through confusion to get to where we are now. Through AAN, the struggle will be a lot less painful. The newbie can learn from their "parent" all the things that newbies otherwise have to learn through trial and error- things like list etiquette, the stories behind the list legends, and who's who. This way, the newbie will not only learn the way of the list much quicker, but look a lot better WHILE learning :). The Basics On How AAN Works Newbies : 1) Newbies learn about AAN through the EDA list etiquette website ( http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup ), through the list, or through some caring list vet. 2) Newbies write to me ( CornflkGl@aol.com ) with just "AAN" in the subject line. 3) I send the newbie an Email survey to fill out. This helps me to pair together EDAs who live close together, have similar interests, are alike in age, etc ( pairings are usually done by location ) 4) Within a couple of weeks of having this survey returned to me, I will send you a mail containing the completed survey of your adoptive parent. Please write to your parent and introduce yourself ! Ask any questions you might have, no matter how stupid they seem. Remember, it's 10 TIMES BETTER to ask a stupid question to your parent than it is to post it on the list. 5) If you want, you can ask your parent to introduce you to the list. 6) When you finally feel confident enough to move out on your own, away from your parent- THANK THEM ! Parents are people too :) Parents: 1) Parents have probably heard me whining time and time again about the fact that I need MORE PARENTS for AAN :) 2) Parents write to me with AAN in the subject of their letter. 3) I'll reply to your letter with a survey to fill out. This helps me to pair together EDAs who live close together, have similar interests, are alike in age, etc ( pairings are usually done by location ) 4) About 2 weeks after I get your completed survey back, I will send you a mail containing the completed survey of your newbie. Please write to your newbie and introduce yourself ! Remember that newbies can be shy, and if they don't write to you immediately, they're probably waiting for you to be the adult :). Be nice to your newbie, and answer every single little question they ask, no matter how ingrained the answer is to you ( " I saw this picture of Jewel on the web... she smokes ???" ) . Remember that the better you teach your newbie, the better your newbie will be on the list. Remember that your newbie needs to know about list etiquette. Teach your newbie about the do's and don't of the list. Include stuff about flaming and how NOT to get flamed. 5) This one's important- read your newbie's posts. If your newbie is doing something contrary to the current list etiquette ( like posting multiple one-sentence posts with no "NJC" in the subject line ), please gently correct them, privately. Most newbies don't even realize they're doing something wrong, and all it takes is one list vet having a bad day to scare the newbie away forever. 6) Have fun, and when your newbie grows up and moves out, come back and get another one !!!! Any further questions can be sent to me, and I'll probably be happy to answer them :) . And now with all this talk of what to do for her b-day, I thought I'd mention it. This might not really work for her birthday because of timing, but we could still do it sometime maybe. Anyway, what I was thinking is that we could somehow provide a large display of flowers or candles or something for Jewel's stage when she is on tour. Maybe just pick one show, or more, and set things up with Lendra or Atz or both and make it all as much of a suprise as we can. Of course, she'll see the stage long before she goes out, but she could be in the dark at least until the day of the show, I think. So, what I am suggesting is that we all somehow donate to the funding of it and give her a nice stage decoration as our gift to her sometime. I don't know if this is really at all practical or not, but it seemed like a nice idea. Lenedra & I have been discussing this & here's what we're going to do for you guys/gals. She will be sending me a few hundred of them in the next week or so. I am going to go set up a special Post Office box here in Kensington,CT for all booklet requests. When we determine exactly how much they'll cost, you'll be able to send a Pre-Postaged self adressed manilla envelope along with a money order (NO CHECKS). AmyJo & I will simply put a booklet in the manilla envelope & drop it back in the mail to you. It'll be that easy. I have to wait until the books are here, I have the PO box & she tells me who to make the money orders out to before I can give you exact instructions. But anyone who'd like a tour/poetry book will be able to get them. :-) Stay tuned for instructions in the next week or 2. :-) Alan(MrBB) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Apr 1997 09:20:58 -0400 From: "The Bowman Family" Subject: Re: Mr.BB #2-Lillith Fair Dates & Nickelodean Show I know Jewel should come to Florida. I didn't get to see her when she came to Orlando last time because the place would only allow people 21 or older in because they served alcohol. They still said I couldn't come even if my dad came with me. I want her to come back so I can finally see her after I've been listening to her for 1 1/2 yrs. ~Jennifer - ---------- > From: William Chinda > To: jewel@smoe.org > Subject: Re: Mr.BB #2-Lillith Fair Dates & Nickelodean Show > Date: Sunday, April 06, 1997 8:22 PM > > >97/07/31 Lillith Fair,Starwood Amphitheater,Nashville,TN > >97/08/01 Lillith Fair,Lakewood Amphitheater,Atlanta, GA > >97/08/03 Lillith Fair,Woodlands, Houston, TX > > I Jewel trying to avoid Florida on purpose or something? > Did anyone who went to the Orlando show on 5/27/96 hear someone yelled > "HOOTIE!" while Jewel was playing Pieces of You? > > W. I'm sure Jewel would get a kick out of it. Or maybe just a one page ad in Rolling Stone or something. Another cool thing would be if we could make up guitar picks with little quotes on them like "hands manifest thought" or "innocense is never lost. . ." Or how about traffic signs that say "will yodel at the end" so she can display them at her shows. Anyway, when a person can buy almost anything they want, it's sometimes truly is the thought that counts. Subject: Angelfood Ok, I greatly appreciate what Farr Shepard, James Judd, and many others have done lately in helping out newbies (and others) get the tapes they really want. I'd suggest two strategies for Newbies: don't post the list generally, saying you would like tapes. Instead, you'd probably get better results by choosing people on the list and asking them directly if they'd feed you that Angelfood. Or, check out Terrence & Farr's latest creation, the Angelbase, at Terrence's website. Also, J-cards are those insert cards (so named because of their J shape) for the tapes. All of the previously treed tapes by the list have really snazzy J-cards, ask around for the original tree heads, or ask Mike Conell, he knows all about trees. And, most of the other tapes (shows and such) have many very nice J-cards made by list members. Usually, ask your source where they got theirs. Most of these people will gladly send you J-cards for a SASE, a smile, and maybe a cookie for good luck. :) Happy hunting, tim gavin P.S> I'm sorry, I don't have very many tapes (most of mine are in the mail or in processing right now) and my JS tapes are of mediocre quality, so there are probably many better sources to ask for tapes. Get back to me in a month or two, though, and I'll be able to help you more. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 06 Apr 1997 21:50:53 EDT From: lilszops@juno.com (Elisa J Szopa) Subject: Hi all! I'm 23 and a resident of the Washington DC metropolitan area who had the wonderful opportunity to see our Angel live at the 9:30 Club on March 10. All I can say is...Wow. :) You seem so friendly and enthusiastic, and I look forward to keeping up with the list. I'd love to hear from any EDAs in my area. :) Have a great night! I will accept requests for leaves until 8pm on Tuesday, April 8th. EDA Cover Tape Tape Tree - ------------------------ Hello everyone. This has been a long time in the making, but the tree for the EDA Cover Tape is officially underway! Huzzah! :) Some of you may be wondering, "What's the EDA Cover Tape?" Well, for you late-comers, the EDA Cover Tape is exactly what it is: EDAs doing cover songs. "Cover songs by whom?" you may ask. Well, Jewel. Duh. *bonk* :) Yes, a bunch of us strange EDAs covering Jewel songs. Oh, the horror! But amazingly enough, this tape is sweet. We have so much talent gathered here among us, it's scary. But enough of that. In no particular order, here is who is on the tape, and what songs they're doing (since I know you're interested): Liz Clark The ABCD Song Katie McCurry Let Them In WWSYS Carnivore Jessica Absence of Fear Angela DiIulio Flower I've Got the Blues More Than You Do Blues Been Down So Long Morning Song Greg Yanito I'm Sensitive Eric Montas Carnivore Foolish Games Angel Standing By William Cheng YWMFM Damon Schmidt Sometimes It Be That Way Rebecca A. Smith Near You Always Rafael Galianes Everything Breaks Sometimes Gerrit Kruidhof You're So Small Toni Dunn Old Lover's House YWMFM Kim Littlejohn Angel Needs a Ride Billy Tom Proven Flower Angel Needs a Ride Medley [a medley of Jewel songs] Nice ecletic mix, n'est-ce pas? Better than the 25 WWSYSs and 18 YWMFMs that some people thought we might get. But on with the tree. I decided to do this tree a different way than trees have been done in the past. Instead of asking for branches first, I will be asking for leaves first, but I will also ask those leaves if they would like to be branches. The reason I'm doing this is because I'm not quite sure what the demand for this tape will be, so I'd rather find out who wants it, and from that, determine how many branches I'll need to keep myself from going insane. So, to sign up for this tape, cut and paste the little form below and send it to me with the Subject: leaf - EDA Cover Tape, and we should all be kosher. cool? cool. I hope to have branches assigned by next week, and those branches should have their tapes, j-cards and leaf lists by the following week. Well, that is it. I hope everyone enjoys it. Take care. 'Bye!
