Since they didn't start 'til after 10 (and I was looking at a early morning coming up today), I didn't stick around for the main act. Both pulled out a mess of good new material - Elizabeth on acoustic guitar and CLB on guitars (electric and acoustic), harmonica, vintage Casio synth and piano (well... sort of - go see for yourself) - but both also dipped into recorded material as well. Unfortunately (and IMHO, quite incredibly considering her talent and the name she's made for herself) I was only one of a dozen or so (including Beatle Bob for those who saw my notes on the Jewel/Rugburns show here...) who were paying much attention 8( (not a particularly good booking, but I'm not complaining - I enjoyed it) and I was apparently the only one in the room who had Elizabeth's disc, much to her surprise (not that I was the only one, that there was anyone at all that did - still not sure if she believed me. ;) Naturaly, with my myopic 20/100 foresight I didn't bring it (or any of my CLB discs) along - duh! At least my hindsight is closer to 20/20 so I never miss when I go to kick myself later...). Like I said - less than an ideal environment for primarily acoustic music - a 2nd story bar room about 20' wide by maybe 60' deep a mile from Washington University. Most priceless moment was probably Cindy stopping near the end of Damn, I Wish I Was a Man, explaining that she was afraid that perhaps a few people in the back of the room (which, though also sparsly populated, appeared to consist largely of fratboys waiting for the main act) didn't get to hear a couple of verses over the talking back there, then unplugging herself and hopping off stage with guitar to go the back and sing the last couple of verses. ;) That really takes something. Addicted To Noise associate editor Beth Winegarner reports: Last year was a wee bit strange for the 22-year-old Jewel, who began the year playing clubs - -- including a few in the Bay Area -- lucky if 20 people turned up to hear songs from her then-two-year-old record, Pieces of You. Actually, it took about two and a half years before the re-release of "Who Will Save Your Soul?" saw any kind of respectable airplay on radio stations or MTV; before that Jewel had appeared once or twice on late-night VH-1 but it seemed no one was ready for her music. So it seemed ironic Tuesday night (April 1) that Jewel performed to a sold-out crowd at Berkeley's 4,000-seat Community Theater, less than a year after being laughed out of smaller venues. The singer gave abundant thanks to Tuesday's audience, and was rewarded with not one, not two, but three standing ovations. After hilarious alterna-folk openers the Rugburns finished their set, Jewel took the stage -- dark except for a wing of twinkling faux candles for which this, her Tiny Lights Tour, is named -- and voiced an a capella verse of "Near You Always" before taking to her guitar. Listeners who haven't heard Jewel perform live before might be surprised at the volume of work she's amassed during her years as a San Diego cafe performer; though she included several songs from Pieces of Your in her set, they were balanced by older works and some incredible new material -- some so new she made up the words as she went along... .."Enter from the East," for instance, revealed a deeper, sultrier alto melody than anything Jewel's done before, giving necessary weight to lines like, "My heart has four empty rooms/Three wait for lightning/And one waits for you" -- and yet her voice fluttered effortlessly into the upper registers during the chorus. She was joined by a cellist, whose sweetly somber performance blessed the song -- and others throughout the night. During the guitar intro to "Don't," a cheerful fan shouted out, "I love you, Jewel!" causing her to flub her part and respond, "I know, but I hate it when you do that. I always get so embarrassed. Thank you, though." She recovered nicely; in fact, Jewel showed herself to be quite a self-assured performer, weaving tales in between her songs. At one point in the set Jewel invited the Rugburns -- vocalist and guitarist Steve Poltz, bassist John Castro and drummer Jeff Aafedt -- to join her. She told the story of how she and Poltz (who share songwriting credits on a couple of Jewel's tunes) had taken a vacation together and, wanting to go whale-watching, were invited by several law enforcement officials out onto their boat. Halfway through the expedition, they discovered the reason for the fuzz's boat trip was a marijuana bust. Jewel and Poltz, stricken, were handed a pair of machine guns with which to help nab the dealers. When the afternoon was finished, the cops offered them as much pot as they could carry away. "Our vacation was completely ruined," Jewel commented, "but the point is, we got this song out of it," and the band launched into "You Were Meant for Me." The Rugburns remained on-stage to back Jewel for several songs including "Adrian," "Who Will Save Your Soul?" and a few new numbers. Jewel occasionally allowed her sense of humor to shine through, as with "Cold Song," the cutest song ever written about sharing the influenza virus (it even closes with an impossible Dr. Seuss-esque tongue twister); she claims she wrote it in her sleep. Later, she played a number called "Race Car Driver," a satirical piece on men who think with their, er, cars: "I'm just a small man with a real big car," she warbled with ample irony. In other moments, Jewel stretched her considerable vocal talents to their limits, as with the yodeling chorus in her rocked-out version of "Chime Bells," at the end of which most of the audience was howling for her to yodel faster. Another a cappella number -- this one sung in the style of those wartime girl groups -- described the unfortunate effects an overly sultry night might have on a lover's otherwise aroused condition. Jewel often returned to her more heartfelt songs, closing the two-hour set with a melancholy version of "Amen" as a starry sky was projected onto the screens behind her. "Where are my angels, where's my golden wand?" she sang in earnest. "Where is my hope now that my heroes are gone?" Although Jewel often sings of the bleakness she sees in the world around her, there's no doubt that her listeners has found a heroine in her. http://www.addict.com/html/lofi/MNOTW/display-news.cgi?97-04-03_Jewel.html ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Apr 1997 19:57:41 -0500 (EST) From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: Jewel's Birthday OK, I know her bday is over a month away (May 23, right?), but is there a tradition for list people to do something for her, and if not, what should be done for this year? If the highest bidder of the auction is a "lucky recipient" and a random drawing is luck, then you can't possibly say that a random drawing is not fair because you would also be implying that an auction is also not fair. I don't mean to twist your meaning of "luck", but which situation is the most fair: (A) An arbitrary random system which gives everyone an equal statistical chance regardless of other social, economic, etc. factors or (B) A system based upon competition which values the almighty dollar, which CAN be subject to biases. e.g. Someone who is lucky enough to be born into a wealthy family and can afford to spend an obscene amount of money for the CD. I haven't been a list member for very long either, but I can't even begin to express the gratitude I have for some of the kindness that I've been extended. There is no way to pay those people back for that kindness, I can only humbly thank them and be there for them if needed. I'd like to extend that same courtesy to you. I'd like you to understand what I now comprehend so that you can get a feel for what this list is about. You see, it's not a money issue. There are just some things that you can't buy. It is a money issue with an auction, and I believe that's the problem that Mike was alluding to when he mentioned the hypothetical bid of $75/$100. There are principles embedded in this list where you can't put a monetary value on some things. To close, I'd like to say this: Regardless of what you choose to do, I'd like to show you the courtesy that others have shown me. Since I am a relatively new list member, I haven't had the chance to search for a lot of the rare items, so I don't have that much material. But from what I do have, pick something and it's yours. FREE. I'll pay for the postage too. No strings attached. I'd just like to extend you the same courtesy that others have shown me so that I can help you understand what I've been talking about. I'm not articulate enough to tell exactly what it is, but if you get that warm fuzzy feeling, then I think I've conveyed what it is that we're about. P.S. email me for what I've got; some things of note: WWSYS import w/ emily Jewel songbook launch w/ Jewel poetry book (from concert) cassette copy of STL (Don't think you want that :) etc. etc. etc. ************************ * In God, we trust * * In Jewel, we believe * ************************ -Darryl ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 1997 16:38:48 -0800 From: "Mark Frabotta (BEST)" Subject: Seattle Shawn Colvin ticket available Anyone in the Seattle area want to go see Shawn Colvin with me? Hi Angels, I'd just like to tell y'all about my spring break weekend. I went to Panama City, Florida and hung out on the beach. The weather was great. It was sunny, yet there was a cool breeze blowing off the Gulf. Perfect weather to relax and listen to Jewel. I was laying out "in the cancerous sun" (Jewel & Steve) just chillin' and listening to Jewelstock. Do you know how great songs like "Angel Needs A Ride", "Sometimes It Be That Way", "If This is What Love Is", "Summertime", etc.,etc. sound in a setting like that?! It was very refreshing. So I'd just like to suggest to everyone to relax, take the time to go out in your backyard, wherever, day or night, whichever you prefer, and enjoy the music. It really is very relaxing, refreshing, and reviving (and any other r-adjective:). Oh, I almost forgot, even though I was away I did set my vcr for the Hard Rock Live show. I got home and watched it right away. I love it!! I haven't gotten to see Jewel live, so I really like it, it's a real treat! Ok, that's it. Thanks for listening. Bye.
