She made it when "Fast Car" was big. There's a nice photo of her on the cover, with the headline saying: Tracy Chapman faces stardom. A transcript of the article can be found at the Tracy Chapman Internet Fan Club Page. Sorry, I don't have the address, but enter TRACY CHAPMAN in a search and it should come up. I recently found it at a place selling old rolling stones for $1 each. I'm excited about the RS cover for Jewel. Yes, it is a sign of mass popularity, and RS is certainly not the best magazine around (far from it). My pick for that is Entertainment Weekly. But its photography is generally provocotive and interesting, and I'm excited to see what they did with someone as beautiful as Jewel. And there have been some fantastic artists on the cover of Rolling Stone: Tracy Chapman, Sinead O'Connor, Belly... artists that fell out of the mainstream. I could go into my personal feelings, but Ill spare you all. I did get to briefly meet some EDAs like John-Eric and Tom Proven, but I had to run after the show. The night was fantastic, once you got past the pat-down search for photographic equipment, bottles/cans, knives, and any other weapon. (Yes, security actually mentioned all those things werent allowed inside.) Berkeley Community Theater, seats about 3900. Ive never heard the Rugburns before, so I cant tell you their set list, but they definitely had the crowd behind them from the very first song through to the end of their 50 minute or so set. Heres Jewels set list as I remember, only approximately in the right order. It was about 1 hour and 45 minutes long. Near You Always - A capella at first, then with guitar and cello Sometimes It Be That Way Dont - As Jewels about to sing the first words, some jerk proclaims his love for her, to which she replied, I hate it when you do that! Satellite Morning Song - Before singing it, she commented, Youre so quiet! ^_^ Little Sister Cold Song - Jewel described it as a polka, a kind of music she thought of writing while trying to think what No Doubt wouldnt do. Race Car Driver - By request Passing Time (?) Fragile Flame Angel Standing By - With a single church window of light projected onto the backdrop, a backlit Jewel, only her silhouette visible, is shone down upon by rays of light from on high. Rugburns joined her for: YWMFM - Told her federali/drug bust story and Alanis Ironic imitation. Silver Lining - Light show in the background: Clouds floating by. Steve said the song was appropriate as today was baseballs opening day. Adrian - Cello and Steve accompanied while she sang. Down (?) - She said it was a new song, and the lyrics werent finished yet. Some song with Cleveland in it? Deep Water - Guitar back in hand, she thanked everyone. She feels that by buying her CDs we saved her from having to worry about having a roof over her head, or having to sacrifice her dignity. Foolish Games - Request it! Im Sensitive - Won by applause over POY. I think it was before this song that Jewel described being at a photo shoot, which she said she hates. Just as shes starting to get into it (here she demonstrated some poses), a model walked in from a nearby Revlon commercial: Long eyelashes and 9 feet tall. Jewels exuberance was crushed. She dedicated the song to the model, anyway. An a capella scat jazz-type song - Or maybe that isnt what scat is. In any case, a perfect example of Jewels vocal mastery. Chime Bells - My dad taught me this... She sang both verses. Encore: WWSYS with Rugburns minus Steve Amen - solo acoustic I wish I could have taped it, but security was quite efficient in the pat down. Not many places I could have successfully hid a tape recorder.... I acknowledge that this is simply a difference in opinion. However, I have yet to understand what motivates this "cost plus shipping for the greater good" philosophy. A sale for cost plus shipping is not a sale, it's a gift. If you want to promote gift giving, fine, but don't expect me to give away anything to anyone but a recognized charity. I get irritated every time I see someone try to inhibit free trade among knowledgeable, avid collectors in what has to be the perfect resource for increasing my collection and fueling my hobby interests. You know me too well, Mike. I would like to request that this list NOT be used for auctioning off items. Using this list to take advantage of other list members goes against everything I hope this list community stands for. It's also an insult to me, since I pay a significant amount each month to keep this list up and running. This list is already too busy, and auctions tend to generate lots of extra noise. In many ways, this list is a commune, or a charity. It operates becuase I fork out the money each month to pay the phone bill and the ISP bill, and pay for parts to keep the servers up and running, and pay for electricity, and spend lots of time making sure that everthing works ok and that clueless people who can't figure out how to subscribe or unsubscribe get what they need. I operate the list so that people who have a common interest have a place to communicate, not so that people can make money auctioning off rare items. If you want to do that, start your own list. What an impressive set of lungs to accompany such a sweet yet strong and versatile voice! Jewel was grrrrrreat, in a cheery (and sarcastic) mood and the crowd was polite and quiet. Here is her setlist for those who want to skip what I did all day: setlist: Near You Always Enter from the East *Guy cries "I love you Jewel" in which she replies "But I hate it when you do that" and everyone laughs. Jewel is really quite a little sassy girl (in a nice way of course) and charming all night. Don't Satellite Morning Song Little Sister Cold Song Race Car Driver Sometimes It Be That Way Foolish Games YWMFM Adrian [yay she sang one of my favorites and it was quite long, 10 plus minutes or so] Tell You Everything? [new song] Down Deep Water Just Passing Time Fragile Flame I'm Sensitive Silver Lining Too Darn Hot Angel Standing By Chime Bells encore 1: WWSYS pseudo-encore 2: Amen *She told stories about her and Steve going whale watching with some cops, did an Alanis Morissette impersonation and a slew of anecdotes and advice. Although she didn't ask for song requests she took them a couple times and was very professional all night yet charmingly personal. :-) Disclaimer: very sporadic writing style since I am tired and Jeweled out. I left my driveway at 12:54p and headed off alone (my friends are too responsible to do things spur-of-the moment) down I-80 west to San Francisco and it was quite windy out, hard to stay between the lines on the freeway. :-) I arrived in Berkeley with a trunk full of Rolling Rock for the Burns and no where to go and no one to show me around town. The theatre was very hidden, but I saw a bus and guessed it was Jewel's and parked. The time of arrival: 2:23p. So I was feeling really small in a big, foreign city sitting in my car waiting for the Burns to arrive so I could hijack their bus and hitch a ride down to L.A. with them. Well before too long I am feeling like that feeling you get when you are the first one to arrive at a party and you feel stupid because you are dancing alone at this time. Then I saw some hippish-looking kids and went over and talked to them and we hung out so I was feeling a little better now. Well, finally at like 4:15p or later the real buses come rolling in (sans Jewel and Steve) and John and Stinky run out of the bus (I didn't have a clue that they were the Burns until later). Then I see a girl with frizzy hair come out and think "that must be Bibi" and ask if she is Bibi and it is her! She walks across the street and comes and hangs out chatting for like 15 minutes as the buses are unpacking which is cool. Bibi is really nice and down to earth. Now she describes the Burns for us and lets us know that Steve and Jewel haven't arrived yet. Then a brand new Nissan Pathfinder rolls out and it's Steve so I yell out from across the street "Hey Steve, I brought some beer for you guys!" Steve immediately walks over and has us pick up our stuff and go over to where the buses are now (everyone around us are really jealous now). So I introduce myself and he is really nice but has to run off (they are obviously late for soundcheck it seems like) and says "Wait here, I'll be right back." Heh. Well we wait for an hour before the security kicks us away and we are banished again to the other side of the street. So I am getting tired of waiting and hungry and frustrated being out on my own so I leave to park permanently and to check out if the doors are open yet. They aren't so I walk to the cafe where we are supposed to meet (in which I actually saw 2 people there) and walk back where some guy walks up to me and wants to see my poster and asks if I am an EDA. Cool! :-) Well it was Adam and his friends and we chatted and then I found the people I was hanging out with earlier and then went to the cafe again and met Dan and his friend. Then went back, got in and bought merchandise and the fun thing was that when I was sitting on the couch in the lobby with my EDA poster up so I could find Tom and Carter, Steve came up, called me by my name (he remembered) and started chatting. Then John did the same. I asked if it would possible to hitch a ride down with them and Steve said I'd have to ask their tour manager and it was probably not going to happen although he wished he could. Then Clinton came up to me and asked if I was an EDA (Larry I had like 100 people ask about the poster) and then Tom and Carter randomly appeared. So now the night was going great and we made plans and everything for going down to L.A. After the show we go out to the lobby and I get John to sign my poster and then Stinky who was really cool. He was talking about Hot Dog Fest and how he wanted to go hang out with us and I was like, "Oh, I'm going to that," in which Jeff responded by asking if I had Tom and Nancy's home phone number and I gave it to him. He is a really fun guy and was really funny and down to earth all night. Then we went outside (Steve had a large group of teenage girls lined up around him) and we waited for Jewel to come out. Well, Stinky came out around the corner and I talked to him again and asked if he wanted the beer that I brought or save it for the other shows and he said thanks again and drop it by the tourbus. I ask him too about going down with them and he is like "Yeah that'd be great, go talk to John in the bus. I'm sure we could do that for you." It was funny when I asked him everyone around me gave out a big gasp like "You asked him what?" :-) So it's like midnight now and Jewel is not coming out so I decide to go get my car (and the beer), even though the Burns had already gone to a bar (at least Steve and Stinky). So I get it and trot down to the bus and tell John here's some more Rolling Rock for you guys and he thanks me a lot and invites me up on the tourbus. :-) :-) They already have a ton of beer but John still wants it and I tell him to save one for Stinky. The bus is nice and there are some crew there and John and he is really polite and nice. Well finally when we get back I find out Jewel rushed to her bus and no one noticed and they are going to leave. So the mob runs to her bus and starts doing cheers to get her out. At first Bibi or some other girl comes out from the curtain and gives us the dirtiest look ever (her job to do so I guess) and then Jewel comes out. :-) Everyone is waving and then the bus takes off, we follow and Jewel is still waving. Well I am like 5 feet from her (with a bus between us) and she sees my poster and smiles and blows a kiss to me (I swear to God it happened). So it was cool she surprised us at the end and at least waved and she saw me and blew a kiss!!!!! :-) Well that was the end to a great night. All the Burns were cool and I got to chat with all of them (they were really friendly when I showed them my poster which John later grafittied). What a great night. Can't wait for tomorrow in L.A. Peace and much needed sleep. :-) John-Eric at Tom's house. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Apr 1997 07:45:15 -0500 From: Steve Sak Subject: NJC: tape deck maintenence Tape deck maintainance primer: Types: There are 2 types of maintenance that need to be performed on a tape deck= . "clueless people who can't figure out how to subscribe.." - that's real nice, Jeff. >I operate the list so that people who have a common interest have >a place to communicate, not so that people can make money >auctioning off rare items. If you want to do that, start your own >list. first of all, you know i subbed a few days ago and this was before i got this promo. if you believe this or not matters none - i know it to be true. i will be on the digest now, because this list has too much traffic. i'm here for jewel info, and just so happened to have a CD for sale/auction. am i a bad person, Jeff? second, as i wrote mike, what better place to help out a Jewel fan - who needs "Save the Linoleum" to complete their collection - than a Jewel list? if someone thinks that $30 is too expensive, they won't respond to my post. it's that simple. if you think i'm taking advantage of any listmembers, you're undersestimating their intelligence. people know how much they have to spend on something. i see it this way: by auctioning this promo 1) i'm giving someone in a chance to obtain this CD, 2) i'm giving everyone a chance to purchase this, because picking at random isn't fair, 3) i'm making a little money for me to pay for my Jewel ticket this Friday, and for my time, 4) i have broken no rules because this was not mentioned in the FAQ. >Do you dig my ditch, Jason? how's the coffee, Jeff. :) __catherine wheel__________________________________ "so think of a time. it's something to cling to. imagine a life that never escapes you. conceal it behind the colour and perfume. a flower to hide - a violet surprise.." _________________________________"flower to hide"__ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Apr 1997 08:04:53 -0500 (EST) From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: JC:yea!/NJC:Nields + Mary Lou Lord WOW - what SUPER news - Jewel on the cover of the next Rolling Stone! Only 2 more weeks to wait then, I presume... also, I wanted to say thanks to the person who does the Pieces of Jewel site - finally, my computer lab's color printer was working last night so I downloaded some of the cool photos to add to my already super-crowded wall. Oh, and I had friends just visiting from Berkeley who were looking for Nields stuff, and we went all over to all these record stores to find their music, didn't find it, they left and THE NEXT DAY I found one of their CDs used (I forget the name - I wrote it down somewhere). So I got my friend a copy and sent it off. That was great! Lastly, I posted before on this, but I'll say it again: I have a new web site for Mary Lou Lord, and I think some of you would really like her. She just signed with Sony/WORK and has two CDs out now on Kill Rock Stars. She is folky, usually just her and her guitar, though now she has a band, and Juliana Hatfield does backup vocals on some of her songs. I can tape some of her music for a trade if anyone is interested. Also, there is some gossip associated with her that is interesting, but I really only mention it to get you to listen to her music (sorry, no .wav files on my site yet). She had dated Kurt Cobain for a while before Courtney and then Courtney decided she hated her and there was much rancor between them. But whatever, that is history and Mary Lou is gonna have a new album out hopefully in August. So, listen to MARY LOU LORD!!! :) Rachel "how could I possible know what I want when I was only 21?..." -- Sinead O'Connor, "the emperor's new clothes" my Mary Lou Lord page is at http://pages.nyu.edu/~rkb200/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 1997 15:17:39 +0200 (MET DST) From: Lisa Golmen Subject: Tape-trees and the cover of Rolling Stone and a poem... Hi angels! Ahem; call me a dork(again..), but what exactly *is* a tape-tree..? Anyone wannna explain..? Mowing swiftly along; I think it`s great that Jewel will be on the cover of Rolling Stone(no dr.Hook-pun intended, honest!)..Finally a Jewel-feature us poor Nordic people can get our hands on(or more importantly; *I* can get my hands on *smile*..) Before I go, here`s a poem, written by yours truly..Now, if I had just a wee bit of musical skill I would make it into a song..but I`m afraid I`m tone-deaf..*sigh* Can you read between the branches, or the lines on my face..? Days are dark and I wonder what hides behind her grace.. is my thoughts made up by pure jelousy, I promised I would not think that way..but what can I do when when she has everything; and all I am is gray.. Can you read between the branches, or the lines on my face..? Trace the tears that I have cried, whilst walking in that maze, I thought I would never feel again.. but was i ever wrong; instead of love; I`ve experienced hate and hate breaks you down, doesen`t make you strong... Yes, yes..I know; lame..sorry; can`t help it..actually this is the mushiest thing I`ve ever written..I`m gonna post this now, before I start regretting the whole thing.. Take care, angels; I wuw you all; you make my every day.. We actually had a SNOW DAY yesterday, Mother Nature played a big fat April Fool's joke on the northeast, she dumped 12-36" all over the NE. We got 18". It was 70's all weekend, go figure. There's no hole in the ozone layer, is there? Well, about me and my wrong posts, which there seems to be a lot of lately, I mean well, but keep in mind please, that when I check my mail, it's about 8am, after my 6:50am class, so I'm mot too coherent. If I post the wrong info, I'm sorry. I am very happy cause I met a boy who goes to my school, but it will never be long distance cause he is originally from the next town over from me at home. I know I'm sort of just a lurker around here and all.... but, what exactly is the problem with someone making sure an EDA or true fan has an oppertunity to get a copy of STL? I know I went everywhere possible in my area to try and find a copy, to no avail. It was through this list that I found a copy. Sure I paid a pretty penny for it but it was worth it to me. I think he had a point when he said that if someone thought it was too steep a price they'd ignore his E-mail. I on the other hand wish he would have posted earlier. I would have much rather paid $30 for it than what I paid for mine. But, because I usually look at both sides of the issue..... It is Jeffs list and if he doesn't want that sort of thing here then I guess that sort of thing shouldn't happen here. In the future maybe the post should say "I have a copy of STL I'm getting rid of. Any interested partys should contact me VIA E-mail. I am selling it so take note of this before you Mail me." I don't know. I'm stepping of the soapbox now, someone elses turn. NEXT!!! MacAngel ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #236 ***************************
