The first time I heard YWMFM, I thought it was a cover of an old Country & Western tune... I was quite surprised to see that it was written by Jewel & Steve Poltz. I used to listen to C&W a lot, but that was about ten years ago (Juice Newton was the next big thing). I know that Jewel is precocious, but I somehow doubt the song was written THAT long ago... Listening to Jewel and writing the essays I should have written over spring break, I'm thinking I have a great life. Its not perfect by any means, but its definitely worth being here. This last month has been one of the most difficult of my life, one of my best friends tried to commit suicide while really drunk. She did this three days before my 18th birthday. I spent most of the week surrounding the events of my birthday at the hospital with her. Every night until she came home. She's been home for almost two weeks, and she's doing a lot better. Today she went her first therapy session, and she is trying to get better, she now is beginning to see that life IS worth living. She used to keep all her anger and emotion bottled up, and tried to do the protecting of everyone else. No one realized how much she was dealing with, so no one could help, but now people know she needs help too, and she is getting it. I haven't really talked much about it with anyone because it is a really draining topic, but I always knew that if I needed you, you were here, and I thank you for that. Now you may wonder why I said I am happy, but there is really good reason. Through this incident I have learned that she needs help, and I have been able to be there when she needs me. I have realized that how awful life gets, there are better ways to get by. I work at a Mental Health Clinic, so I see people with depression everyday, and I thought I could deal with anything. Then this happened and I was devastated. I didn't know what to do and I was mad. I was mad that I could deal with someone else's problems, but mine were too hard to handle. Anyways I have grown from this, and I see my friend taking the appropriate steps to getting better. I know she will because she has so many people that love her. And for any of you feeling depressed out there, I am there for you and I love you. I don't know all 700 of you, or even anything close to that amount, but I don't want anyone to ever go through what she or I had to go through. I am making this offer for ANYONE who ever needs it. I am here for you, and any time you need to talk (or write) you can contact me, and I will be here for you, like you have been here for me. Whether you know it or not, these posts have helped me get through a lot. For all of you who are frustrated about the fighting posts stick with us, we are like a family (a REALLY big family) and we will have our fights, but we will also have our moments of love, hope, inspiration, and peace. For those who don't see this as a family, I am truly sorry, and I hope one day you will. Another reason I am happy is because I have made the offer to help any one of my angels in their time of need. It helps me to help you. I will stop rambling now, but I just really want to thank you for being true everyday angels. Have a great day!! I love you all!! Sorry I meant for this to be a happy post, but as I reread it I realize it turned out to be kind of depressing, but please don't take it that way, I hope it brings any angel in distress a little relief, and a little hope that things will get better. Just please don't bottle up your problems, talk to someone or write, or do something, but don't ever think you are alone, because you aren't and you never will be. *smiles in the midst of tears* Julie %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Julie Bristol @>--->--- jewlieb@juno.com ---<---<@ We are everyday angels / Be careful with me 'cause I'd like to stay that way. ~Jewel Kilcher~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 01 Apr 1997 02:26:59 -0500 From: Gianfranco Covello Subject: Re: njc: thanks for being here I absolutely love posts like this, It makes my day knowing that there are people like this out there, and about 700 or more at that, that I am in contact with. Life has been really busy for me lately, so I rather lurk on the list, even though I've been on for quite a while (relatively speaking). I'm rejuvinated and excited about seeing Jewel again tommorrow in Berkeley, and seeing the Rugburns for my first time. I look forward to meeting many of you that I don't know, and seeing the few that I do once again. My roommate, Dennis, will be along for the ride as well. We'll be at the Au Coqulet Cafe by 6 pm as the official plan seems to be. I'm 6'0", light brown (once very blonde) hair that is rather short (1/2"?), and have a goatee. May or may not be wearing my oval glasses. My roommate is 6'4" or 6'5", brown, wavy hair. We plan to go down much earlier as we have the whole day off. I need to buy some outdoor gear at REI, and then we are going to trade in mass used cd's and see what we can find at various Telegraph Ave. locations. Telegraph Ave. is a very cool place full of huge used CD stores, used clothing stores, used bookstores, street merchants, and naked hippies protesting the government machine (honest, I have pictures...and these people shouldn't be naked!, punks with loads of facial tatoos and piercings, and your general eclectic mix. If you've never been there, you must! Telegraph is further up University (way up close to the hills) and on the right...can't remember if it makes it to University...may end further right. The happening stretch is maybe 4 blocks long. Hope you all had a great long weekend :) I went to her Vancouver show on Saturday and here's my review: First, the venue was very nice and easy to get to, which was a big plus. The worst moment was realizing that my seats were 26 (!!!) rows back, when at her last two shows I was mere inches away (I should be grateful for that anyway). I am convinced TicketMaster has it out for me, considering that I bought my tickets about 10 minutes after they went on sale, and yet about a thousand people (mostly "Friends" clones) had better seats - oh well! The concert was EXCELLENT!!! I had never heard the Rugburns before but they blew me (and the rest of the audience) away. You gotta love Stinky - he's halarious :) I saw quite a few people running out during intermission to buy their cd, which is great news. Jewel came out during their set and performed a song with Steve that they had just written on the bus. She sounded better than ever! It was interesting to hear some of her songs performed along with a cello and the Rugburns, rather than just her by herself. I don't have a set list, but the biggest surprise for me was hearing "Adrian" for the first time live. She couldn't remember it at the other shows so I guess fans asking for it so much helped. She got three standing ovations and the crowd definatly left happy! Cheers :) Joanne P.S. Stinky was standing outside the main enterance at the end of the concert and waved back to me, which was a nice ending! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 12:21:11 -0500 (EST) From: Pinballplr@aol.com Subject: EDA needs some technical help and tapes Hello out there, I'm on AOL and want to download my "Welcome to the List" e-mail but I have never downloaded before. I caught parts of the VH-1 Hard Rock thingy sunday night at my brother's house up at Cornell U. I didn't expect it to be such a concerty atmosphere, but that was nice. Her ma and pa doing stuff with her was cool. Did anyone else notice Bibi in the backhalls when they were rolling the credits :) Steve looked goofy. I was looking through the liner notes of the Dead Man Walking sdtk that I borrowed from the library and noticed that Jewel Kilcher was thanked. I think this was pointed out before, but I thought that was cool. I was thinking that for a future album, it would be neato if Jewel put aside the guitar and just did a bunch of jazz and blues tunes with various backing and session musicians. Do a mix of covers and original tunes (if she can write some, that is) and just belt them out. I think she could do an amazing job. I've been listening to Holly Cole who only does jazzy covers of lots of different songs, and Madeleine Peyroux, who does covers and originals of blues, jazz, old country, and folk which set me off on this tangent of Jewel investigating this area of moosic. Plus, I want to hear her scat up a storm. what's the official term for scatting? please, no scatalogical humor. As of yesrterday I already had enough replies and was already turning people down. Well, for some reason Jewe-news reposted my note last night, so I'm sorry but if I haven't replied to you by now, you're too late. I'm sorry if the note being reposted gave you false hope, but I already had enough offers before it even went up. Don't worry though, I'll be doing another batch as soon as I can so that everyone can get one, I just can't handle them all at once, so be patient and you will get one eventually. Thanks for the overwhelming response, I'm glad I could help out. It sounds faily similar to the Portland and B.C. shows in terms of sets list and things mentioned by her. I got to met Lenedra, which was very cool for me after hearing so much about her. She was so nice. I didnt see any other angels there, did anyone else go? Rugburns were great as always. Take care everyone. There is no Netscape is a perfectly horrible mail reader if you deal with large volumes of mail or are on mailing lists. I'd recommend that you zip over to http://www.eudora.com and download the light version of Eudora 3.0. It supports advanced mail filtering that would allow you to dump all of the jewel mail into it's own mailbox. I know a rather prominent jewel-lister uses Eudora on the PC, so perhaps he will offer assistance. > special header or other such thing to let me know whether email is from > the list or if it is someone who mailed me direct. If the message was sent 'To: jewel@smoe.org', then it came from the list. If you pick the 'Reply' button, your reply will go direct to the person who wrote the post. If you pick 'Reply All', your reply will be sent to the mailing list. And, before anyone asks: No, I will not add some special keyword to the subject line to identify mail from the list. With software Eudora available, there's no reason to. - -jeff (your trusty, but crotchety list manager) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 18:02:48 -0500 (EST) From: SDAngelLI@aol.com Subject: Re: anais nin and henry miller In a message dated 97-03-31 22:28:26 EST, Tlcathome@aol.com writes: << I've mentioned this before, but Henry Miller was a married man and Anais was his lover.
