The energy there was great, cept that I wish that Jewel was a little bit more interactive with the crowd. (I saw her in Detroit on Sunday, which I'll talk about in another post) Nevertheless, she was spectacular. Her voice was angelic and her guitar-playing was phenomenal. She was soooooo good artistically that I thought I was gonna cry. She played 21 songs altogether, which were more than enough to satisfy the crowd. The encore had a song called "Silver Lining" which she performed w/ Steve Poltz. Never heard this before, but I thought it was pretty good. Oh well, I better stop rambling, I just wanted to tell everybody how much I enjoyed the show and how glad I am to be a part of the list now. But, I've also heard her say in the past that she wrote that song for a friend whose father had died. Does anyone know which is is? To be quite honest, I thought that Jewel seemed a bit...uninspired or tired. Don't get me wrong, she sounded and looked great and all, it's just that she hardly talked to the crowd and it seemed like she didn't want to be there! I saw her last may at the Metro and she was way different - talkitive, giggly, enthuastic, and just full of stories. I know that part of it's due to the larger venue and the different type of crowd now that she's found all this success. I'm not saying I was disappoited, it's just that I felt kinda bad for her - she seems like she's getting tired of the endless touring. Anyway, on a more happy note - Did anyone else wait for her in the alley after the show? I was surprised by how few people stayed, but, she did come out after about an hour and sign autographs and talk to those of us who waited!!!! I was so excited, seeing her up and close, it was almost like I was in a dream! I was so shocked that I couldn't even mange to say a word to her - I really choked! But, I did get my ticket signed by Jewel and all of the Rugburns! I asked Steve Poltz how he met Jewel and, in case anyone else is curious, he said that they met in San Diego along time ago. He was at a coffee shop and she was his waitress. He said that he was sick and she brought him tea - and the rest is history! Well that's my story, If you made it to the end, thanks. I had watched that Wizard of Ozz concert many times when it was on TNT and I loved her and the show (which says a lot since I hate the movie). I never found out who played Dorothy until I was at the record store about two months ago. I was looking through the B-way category looking for a certain West Side Story when I found the cd and checked to see who was on it (I had heard a few of her songs but never thought highly of them since I was overly obsessing about Rent at that time). I bought the cd and took it home and listened to Over the Rainbow and Jitterbug (great song) constantly for two days (it was the first time Rent had been out of my walk man for three weeks). I got the Pieces of You about a month ago when I got home form vacation and had been listening to that constantly until I got the new Live cd two days ago. I have also heard her single off of Phenomenon and I love that. My favourite songs are You Were Meant For Me, Adrian, I'm Sensitive, Foolish Games, and Have A Little Faith In Me. I'm currently working on getting the soundtracks of Phenomenon, The Craft, and I Shot Andy Worhal to get her singles from them. I also like B-way musicals, alternative, hard rock, and some of almost any style - I'm very diverse in my tastes. I was wondering what you people talk about here (besides Jewel) since a lot of newsgroups don't allow off subjects and I also want to know where I can find a list of tour dates (if there is one). It took you three years to get here, thanks to patience from your record company and your own relentless work. The folksy "Who Will Save Your Soul," the first single off your "Pieces of You" debut album (Atlantic), was one of last year's most enduring hits. Its follow-up, "You Were Meant For Me," just hung in the top 10 for a few weeks, and your new single, "Foolish Games," will likely follow it. What now? "I'm really tired." Jewel is tired. No big surprise. Three years of breakneck promotional activities will do that to you. Her upcoming tours of Europe and Australia - -- where the unknown artist will have to break herself gradually, as she did here -- may not be as much fun as most folks would think. "I'm looking back on some of the gigs I've done, going, 'How did I do it?' " she says. "I was in Philadelphia recently, one of the first places I ever played. I would play in a coffee shop that had a stage that was 3-by-3 feet, like a little postage stamp, five feet above the ground. I couldn't close my eyes. Everybody talked, and you couldn't make people listen by screaming. "Just crappy gigs like that, opening for goth bands and punk bands. And I'm thinking, 'If I have to do this in Europe . . .' " Jewel, 22, probably deserves a break. It's been only four years since she was hacking it out in San Diego, living in a car, writing her own songs and trying to get somebody -- anybody -- to listen. And now this. All this fame stuff. "Fame has been a very, very strange adjustment because I can't perceive it," she says. "It's something you experience through other people's perception of you. And that's strange to think that when I was living in my car, people didn't believe in me. Now that I'm 'famous,' people do. But the only thing is, I've always been me. What made me different is I believed in myself at the beginning." But she seems to be adjusting nicely, making a smooth transition from salt-of-the-earth pop-folkie to glittery star. There was that Grammy ceremony last month, for instance, when she dazzled the crowd with her glitzy, nearly see-through gown. For someone who made a name in earthy folk-rock, she seemed to revel in the pomp of the night. Not so, says the Alaska native, who grew up on a 700-acre homestead. There's a difference between loving beauty and succumbing to glamour. "It has a lot to do with how I was raised -- the land, the silence, the open space, the color green," she says. "But you always wanna dip your toes in things. It's like playing dress-up: Somebody gives you a $14,000 dress to wear, and you're like: 'God. OK, I'll check it out!' But I'm not a gaudy person. "If you're a spiritual person, people are scared if you look sexy one night. They freak out." After all, Jewel says, she's just being sincere -- the very attribute that attracts her fans. "I'm human. I'm gonna be innocent and naive and wise and flirtatious and modest, all at the same time, because we're all that way, especially at my age," she says. As her popularity has grown, Jewel says, her fan base has gotten younger. A bit odd, considering: "I never had many friends my age. You know how that is, when you're a kid in high school: 'Everybody hates me!' " she says. "Now to see so many people my age liking me, it's kind of a funny thing personally." Jewel is set to record her next album, this time with rock producer Peter Collins (Rush, Genesis). And if fame makes for a whirlwind life, the trouble it took to get there makes it easier to create the art. "I kind of understand the creative beast more on my own terms," she says. "I also learned -- it's a neat process -- that a radio song is whatever touches people, and it's just a matter of radio coming around to that. "I think my record label's really proved that point -- that they could take 'You Were Meant For Me' and get it played between Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton. It's a kick. It's hilarious!" http://www.freep.com/fun/music/qjewel14.htm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Mar 1997 21:41:04 EST From: toweringsis@juno.com (Shelly L Cook) Subject: Spring Break Hello Angels- Just wanted to say goodbye!
