Jewel, Steve Poltz, and Jeffie. hehe :) I don't even remember what most of the dream was about but that's all i needed to know. :) I dreamed that I was watching a live taping of the Wizard of Oz. Jewel was singing and all and suddenly the Wicked Witch of the West (or whatever) flew down on her broomstick and said "I'll get you Dorothy.. heeheehee.. and your damn dog to!!!! moohahahahahahaha" and she sounded so freaky! And then Jewel gave a real fake sarcastic "OH NO!!!" and then the witch fell off her broomstick. Ha Ha. That was the funniest thing b/c it was this major blooper and she had to jump back on the broomstick and ride away. IS THAT NOT WEIRD OR WHAT? :) I'm done. Steve was there too but was just sitting in the 30-40 angel crowd. I remember seeing the Harris brothers, Liz, Shelly, Tom, Mike, Sinjin, Larry and other people who in actuality I have never seen in my life (you all kinda resembled Steve), and we had to lean against the back fence because this backyard was really small and uncomfortable. But I guess the funniest (read, most unlikely to happen) one, is where Jewel comes to perform a coffehouse at my school, and asks for requests, and I'm like the only one there who knows anything *not* on POY, and I request "Love Me Just Leave Me Alone" and she's like, "Oh my God! You know stuff that's not on POY! Yay! Come up here!" So I go up on stage and she starts asking me what I think the song is about and we chat for awhile, then she asks me to sing along with her. Derrick (dkaracos@marlin.utmb.edu), Christina (), and I (Obie1@ou.edu) have started organizing things so that all who want to have a part in this can, and we all hope this gets HUGE. So far we have upwards of 20 people who have publicly shown interst to traveling to the show this June either by car or plane. I think we would all enjoy having as many Angels as possible come and support Jewel in Texas and get a chance to meet all the EDA's. We havn't done somthing like that since JewelStock and we have grown so much since then. Once again the tickets are free at BlockBuster with the purchase of $10 or more. We encourage everyone to get tickets NOW. BlockBuster expects there to be around 250,000 people there and with the names that they have booked it should be a quick seller and quite memorable. Derrick is trying to get more details as they come in since he lives down there and Christina is taking info of all the people who want to go and their circumstances. The afternoon of the concert started really bad because I wanted to get to Indy in time for another sound check experience, but didn't get out of Cincy until 5:20pm. We arrived in Indianapolis around 6:30pm and drove straight to the Murat. Folks if you haven't seen this theatre it's really an awesome sight. One entire side of the building (main entrance) has been painted with an Egyptian-esque mural/theme. The inside is sort of a Quasi-elegant meets King Tut deal with smaller concert rooms inside (such as the Egyptian room) other than just the main auditorium. A bar encompasses the entire wall from one side of the building to the other and needless to say it was still packed. As we made our way through the lobby, seraching frantically for an ATM (I bought nothing at the Pittsburgh show and was determined to leave with my hands full this time) and who do we run into but Greg and Bob!! I met Greg at LizStock, but had never met Bob who turned out to be a pretty cool guy. Hi Bob; come on no lurking... Greg offered to lend me some bills for merchandise until I could find an ATM, (an awesome gesture thanks Greg) but I spotted the one across the street and withdrew enough to by one of everything! I don't hink Greg knew what he was getting himself into with that offer... OK enough laboring; we went our seperate ways and got seated (the second last row of the top balcony - - great seats eh buddy?) just as the Rugburns were arriving on stage. I tried to prepare my wife for their music, but no description I gave can enough come close to what it's like watching these guys perform (and this is a mellow show for them??? I've got to see them on a wild night!!!) From the first tune to the last my kids became instant Rugburn worshipers and my very, very old (ouch, did I say that?) wife Jacquie - (OUCH, I did say that and I just got hit by the woman herself) even thought they were cool. What is there not to like about a band with an album called 'Morning Wood' (censored version for those under 18 - '7am Stiffy') OK I'm gross... Anyway after the Rugburns and a 25-30 minute wait, the room darkens and a completely angelic voice begins her now infamous acapella version of NYA. SIDE BAR---- This was the second time now I've heard this by the way and I believe it is a fabulous way to begin her show. The only change I would make might be to announce her coming out first so that the applause dies down before she starts. --SIDE BAR completed. I'll stop here since this is already too long. She spoke much more during this show than the one in Pittsburgh; I attributed it to the fact that she was still ill for the Pitts show, and that the crowd in Indy was much more receptive to her the person, not just the singer. A personal Best Concert moment for me was when she sang I'm Sensitive and my kids were singing right along with her. We had one lady turn around and tell us that she paid to hear Jewel sing not my kids, but I didn't even have to reply; about 5 or 6 people around us replied (in a nice manner and voice even) with the loudest individual saying 'Ma'am you just need to concentrate more on the message of the music; if you did you would come to love what you just heard'. Wow! This lady became my personal hero for the night by the way... a true EDA (without the internet address!). After the show things really got weird for us and until now it has just been one big blur to me. We searched for a sign of Greg and Bob, but while looking we ran into Jeff (Stinky). He immediately remembered me from Pitts, of which I was exceedingly both surprised and honored, and I introduced him to my wife and kids. My daughter had painted a picture for him with his name on it (I told her about him after the Pitts show and she just immediately loves anything her Dad does) and she gave it to him. At this point Stinky just melted. It was an awesome sight; Stinky holding my daughter in his arms, my son leaning aginst his side, and Stinky just taking it all in stride. I must believe that he truly has a soft spot for kids it was just all to natural. After a few minutes, Erinn, my 6 yr old daughter, tells Stinky that she painted a picture for Jewel too. Stinky has 'How would you like to give it to her?' As if it were nothing special (oh to be 6 and innocent again) she says 'OK'. Stinky then turned and carried her without even a pause, past the crowd, into the backstage area. We (Jacquie, Nathan and I) were so shocked that we didn't even follow him!! Finally Jacquie says I guess we should follow him eh? DUH!!! So almost 3 minutes after he left, we start to follow him. Security then lets Jacquie and Nathan (7yr old son) go in, but stops me and asks me where I think I'm going. 'I'm following my wife' I replied. Which one's your wife? he asked. The one you just let in before you cut me off, I said flippantly. Well I guess its ok' he says and opens the door. Erinn has now been gone for about 5 minutes, and Jacquie & Nathan about 2 minutes. I start walking around looking for everyone when I see Stinky outside of a small room. I told him that I had to claim being his older brother just to get back here, and he just laughs and apologizes. He says well you are here now; they're right inside this room. I walk in and the next three seconds of my journey ruined my whole night. Just a I walked in I peeked around the wall on my right side, (Jacquie is standing just in front of me) I come face to face with Jewel Kilcher. I mean I almost head butted her I was so close. That one instant ruined me. I don't know if I was embarassed or just extremely nervous, but I could not say a word. For the first time in my like I was speechless. I felt like a real idiot as Jacquie introduced me at this point and I muttered Hi and moved to the doorway in retreat. She was holding Erinn and Nathan was standing next to her. She talked a few minutes more with Jacquie and the kids, and offered to let Jacquie get a couple of pix with Nathan and Erinn. Jacquie bid her farewell and thanks and we started to leave. We got about half way down the hall and Jacquie says 'I thought you wanted to get your posters signed?' DUH! I was so nervous I didn't even really remember I had them in my hands (this is very hard to do for those that have seen these mammoth cardboard EDA posters - THANKS LARRY!!!). I went back in and managed to ask her to sign them which she did without even a hint of disatisfaction. She asked me who all of the signatures were from and I said 'Well here are the Rugburns...". She cuts me off and says 'All of these people are Rugburns' (there are over 40 signatures on this thing folks so now I'm really embarrassed), but I managed to say while snickering at her comment; no these are my fellow EDA's from around the country'. She says nothing to this and says how do you spell your daughter's name?' I replied 'Arinn' which she propmtly puts on the poster. I quickly corrected myself and said 'I'm sorry Erinn'. 'Gee you really are nervous aren't you, it's ok.' Thank you I said as she completed the signing of Nathan's poster as well. I thanksed her again and she said i'it's really no problem, thanks for coming.' and I escaped down the hall hastely. I thanked Stinky again and promised to see him in Columbus the next night (but I got really ill and couldn't go the next day :( ) and we left the Murat. We were all in such shock of how quickly everything happened that we hardly spoke all of the way back to Cincy. As a matter of fact, Nathan and Erinn slept all the way as if they didn't have a care in the world. Unlike there 'now realizing what an idiot he was' Dad. The one person I wanted to meet most at this time of my life and I have to almost bump heads with her and as a result lose all composure to the point where I could not even thank her for her words, her music, her honesty; nothing, i could not say Anything!!! I never thought I would feel that way in front of anyone; hell I met President for God sakes without even a sweaty palm! I still feel like a complete idiot even now. I've sang in front of people for over ten years without even the slightest hint of nervouseness and I turn around to look just like some obsessed idiot when I meet Jewel. To this day I do not understand it; I just blame it on the 'not quite a headbutt' incident. Oh well my moment of Triumph was an Ode to Stupidity sequel. At least the pix don't tell the true story!!! OK for those who made it through this, thanks for reading. I was very unsure as to whether I should post a generic review or explain things to help get it off my chest. Hope to meet you all there, Peace -George ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Mar 1997 22:41:01 -0600 From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Subject: St. Louis concert previews: Well, the previews are in: Ranging from the neutral/backhanded complementary...: Night Times, Mar 1997 "In other news both Jewel and Low will be coming to town on Friday, March 21. Both are touring in support of excellent recent pop albums. Both are likely to be pretty low-key in concert. I've seen Low in concert a couple of times and their quaalude rock should come off well in a venue like the Side Door, where they are scheduled to appear this month. I've had tickets to a couple of Jewel shows too, but she's canceled every time. I'm giving her one last chance this month, when she is scheduled for the American Theater. You should give her a chance too, since the majority of the album is much better than the watery stuff that's made it to the airwaves." ...through the unflattering...: Riverfront Times, Mar 19-26, 1997 which I seem to have mislaid tonight... ...to the negative: St. Louis Post Dispatch Mar 20, 1997: "Just when you thought that the overloaded Alanis bandwagon was ready to drag bottom, the music industry managed to squeeze another neo-folk waif on board. Jewel's hits "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "You Were Meant For Me" were pleasant, if forgettable, and gained her 'Favorite New Artist' honors from the fawning American Music Award folks. But it's a safe bet that within a year, this Jewel will be consigned to the great heap of pop baubles." Moral of the story, I suppose: Don't piss off the newspaper people by repeatedly cancelling/not rescheduling shows in their town... See if any of them change their tune after the concert (though I somehow doubt Mr. Hampel of the Post will be in attendance...). Hope the crowd isn't as hostle as the papers. bob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Mar 1997 23:06:32 -0600 From: jnye@probe.net (john nye) Subject: the craft soundtrack Hey EDAs I was at musicland today and I saw the craft soundtrack and it had jewel on it and I was wondering if it is worthe the $17 dollars for the cd.
