General Information: The concert was held at the Ryman Auditorium, one of the best places acoustically that I've ever been. My friends and I sat in the 14th row, and had a terrific view of the performers. I think it can be said that there isn't a bad seat in the place, which holds approximately 2000 people. A perfect place for Jewel when she plays Nashville (hope, hope). The only marr on the experience was an annoying girl sitting next two me, who told us to "Shut Up!" when we talked between songs, then proceeded to talk through all the performances! I have to admit that I lost my cool, and told her back to "Shut up!" only to have her reply "F--- you." An intelligent retort. Anyway, Patty Griffin opened up, coming out alone, dressed in a green summery dress and red tights. I don't know any of her songs save one, so I can't tell you what she sang, but she had a delightful voice. She played five songs, one of which was one I recognized from the radio, with the tag line "Every little bit." That may be the song title. After the second song, she was joined by an electric guitarist, who was from a local group called "Iodine." Before her final song, Freedy and Shawn came out with a cake and had us all sing "Happy Birthday" to Patty, whose birthday it was (obviously). The only negative I had about her performance was that she sort of slurred her words, making it difficult to understand the lyrics. Still, her set ended too quickly. Freedy Johnston came on next, and played an unspectacular set. Most of the 8 songs he played were from his new album, but all sounded pretty similar, in my opinion. He was joined by his band, and Shawn Colvin for one song. Finally, Shawn Colvin came out (for the third time). She had a guitarist, a drummer, a keyboardist, and two bass players who appeared separately, plus a backup singer. Most of the songs she played were from her latest album, A Few Small Repairs. The setlist included (I didn't recognize some of the songs, even though I have all her albums): Sunny Came Home* Get Out of This House* Window to the World You & the Mona Lisa* (A story about Sister Wendy, a spirited British nun who will appear on PBS soon talking about various famous paintings in a rather provocative style) Polaroids Shotgun Down the Avalanche Wichita Skyline* The Facts About Jimmy* (Two songs I didn't recognize) Tennessee I Want It Back* (Another song I didn't recognize) If I Were Brave* Suicide Alley* Medley including "Hold Your Head High" and a Beatles song that goes "I... told you once before goodbye...but I came back again..." * denotes song from her new album Her voice was crystal clear, and as those of you who have seen her before know, she played the songs very similarly to the way they were recorded on the albums. Between songs she would talk about what the next song meant, or where it was written, much like Jewel. She also looked to be in good shape, surprising in light of her recent divorce and her appearance on the Grammys, where her dress was NOT flattering (it made her look thirty pounds heavier). In fact, the loud girl next to me kept commenting on her "tight ass" (don't ask me). An excellent concert, recommended highly. Bill Yeh p.s. the weirdest current song: a dance mix version of Paula Cole's "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone."
