It's their prerogative. Who am I to say? Yeah, to some ska listeners, they have changed their sound, and many think that they sold out to a more popular type alternative music. But that is DEFINATLEY not the reason why they've changed. Eric Stefani used to be the main song-writer of the band, and he wrote many ska music that the band played. Then, he dropped out of the band to pursue a career drawing for the Simpsons. That meant that the song-writing had to be left up to the band, especially his sister, Gwen Stefani. Before Eric left, he gave the band a few pointers and suggestions as to how to write the music, deal with chords, lyrics and all that other stuff. Then, they were on their own, but Eric still has a little bit of influence to the band. So the music on the great album, Tragic Kingdom, is mostly written by Gwen and the band. This is more their type of music. This is more them, and this is why they didn't sell out. They didn't change because alternative music is more popular. They changed, because they feel that this music they're playing right now has more to do with them, because it's *their* music, that *they* wrote and not Eric. That's not selling out...that's being honest with yourself. The Discworld books, by Terry Pratchett, are some of the funniest books I've ever read. An off beat fantasy/comedy series with some AMAZING jokes and parodies. These are even better if you like dry English wit. If you've never tried English humor (i.e. Monty Python only funnier), try it, you won't be dissapointed. The only parodies that can rival it would be Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers books. These are some of the most hillarious books ever written (more English humor). Ok, i won't say... ;) Now for some book suggestions: - -Weave World by Clive Barker: From a time long forgotten, a whole world weaved into the strands of a magical carpet to protect them from some sort of beast/plague and just a few people left behind to protect the carpet. Something out there is still waiting for them to come out... - -The Lord of Rings by J.R.R Tolkien: Well i guess most people already know what this story is about (if you haven't already read it). If you haven't read it it is a must if you like the heroic fantasy genre. - -The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward by H.P. Lovecraft: Finding out that one of his ancesters was a wizard Charles Dexter Ward becomes obsessed with sorcery and necromancy but where will it lead him. Not all Lovecraft short stories are good but this one is really worth it. - -Druids by Morgan Llywelyn: This is the story of a young celtic orphan taken in by the chief druid of the Carnutes who would become soul friend of Prince Vercingetorix. This story is set in the time period of the roman conquest. From what I saw and heard, the best show of the bunch last week was Cleveland, which I decided to sneak away from work to go see at the last minute on Wednesday. This one measured up to some of the best performances I've seen from Jewel over the past couple of years in Toronto, and the well-behaved audience was just the kind of crowd Jewel works best off. She played some favorite rarities, a couple of new ones, and seemed in high spirits throughout the nearly 2-hour show. Columbus, which I didn't see, was reportedly good with some strange twists in the setlist, but I'm told it didn't quite measure up to Cleveland. A travelling fan we met on Sunday said he thought Jewel's Indianapolis show definitely fell short (hey, I'm just relaying the comment.) And Detroit was strange, I thought she seemed preoccupied, not into it somehow, and her voice sounded a bit raspy, even breaking at one point during YWMFM. However, anyone who had never seen Jewel before must have surely been thrilled, even by this abbreviated set on Sunday, as Jewel tends to be charming and captivating even on her off-nights. It was great to meet some of the other EDAs at the shows. The pre-show EDA meeting at Second City in Detroit did happen, even though Mike, who works there and arranged it all, _never showed_! Liz, Shelly, & Tim-- you're all nuts! If it weren't for you, what kind of stories would there be to tell? Mia, you're nearly perfect...if only you could see the underlying beauty of this place. Detroit's a good city, it's done nothing wrong. Despite that shortcoming, who else could convince me to drive round-trip to Cleveland on a Monday morning before work? Looking forward to the western tour reviews... ttyl! I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save Liza." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in a bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. Subject: St. Louis and KC shows Ok, I still haven't heard anything. Are we going to meet anywhere beforehand, at either of these shows? If so, where? It doesn't have to be anything snazzy. In fact, it doesn't have to be much of anything. We could all meet on the corner of 9th and Prentiss, and then go out for spicy Thai food, for all I care, as long as we do it together. If no one else comes up with anything, I suggest we meet at the theatre at 5:00 each night. both shows are at 8:00, right? I'm nowhere near my tix. We can get together, find somewhere nearby to eat, and talk and stuff until the show. Please email me to agree or disagree VERY soon. Like I said, I'm leaving very early thursday morning for the Chicago show. We've got wings, so we should flock together, angels of a feather that we are. So, unless we decide on anything else, it looks like 5:00, front entrance of the theatres? We can meet earlier, later, or anywhere else, just make sure everyone knows about it. Talk to capello about who all is going to KC, I don't know if anyone has a complete list of attendees for the SL show. But, most importantly, talk, and talk fast. cool beans, tim gavin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Mar 1997 00:23:35 -0500 From: Computer City Subject: NJC:Fionna Apple on Leno tonight Sorry if this was already posted but I know there are Fionna Apple fans = on the list and I just turned Leno on and she's gonna perform. (Part 1) OK I haven't written to the list in so long but then I don't write all that often in the first place. So the minneapolis show was great. Be one of few list members in the great state of minnesota we didn't have quite as big a EDA following from some of the other concerts. Oh well. I arrived at the Orpheum at 630 right when the doors opened. This was my first time at the Orpheum so i was very impressed. I proceded over to the Mechandise table to pick up my Poetry book and maybe say hi to Bibi. She wasn't around. I asked this women if her name was Bibi but it wasn't. So I decided to go to my seat which was in the balcony. (please bare with me I tend to ramble) OK The Rugburn's came on. This was my second time seeing them live. My first was in january at Java Joes and was a fabulous show with Jewel so I've been kind of spoiled in terms of seeing them live. OK I was a littel disappointed at the set list but oh well They Kicked Ass as usual. Here is the set list in no particular order, I may miss one or two. Opening Jam Crazy World Get You Up For Lent Tree Hugger I Love Everything About You Gold's Gym Guy My Body Is Changing (w/Jewel) UPS My Heart Next Day To You And I think there was one more OK Part two is coming up ~Pete ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 1997 22:59:35 -0700 (MST) From: Chopped Liver Subject: Re: JewelStock and The JeweStock Tapes: what it was and how to get them. Thanks once more for making clear the JewelStock tape situation. I was a member of the list (though I didn't get to go) during the JewelStock saga. I still read every word posted about how the tapes are to be handled. Why? Because I think that I need to remind myself periodically what a great gift they are. They are unique in the music business and we have a resposibility to protect the spirit in which Jewel gave them to us.
