This novel is about four Beatles-fanatical boys growing up in Oslo during the sixties. They identify themselves with the fabulous four, and they get inot heaps of weird stuff..It`s the nicest, funniest, and maybe best book I`ve ever read, and I recommend it to you guys. Note: It`s *long*, though. *If you feel like life isn`t treating you very well, tired of the world and the fact that..well, no-one cares, read "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath. I was never the same... Plath`s poetry is recommended as well. *Gothic, you say..? Try Anne Rice. There`s much more to her than just Interview with the Vampire. Like Memnoch the Devil, for example.. *Everything by Dean Koontz is alright if you like to get chills down your spine. Try Dark Rivers Of The Heart for a start. Alright, then? Subject: even more NJC Books: I might post recommendations of good books, but that would take too long, and I've got work to do. (I've got to go watch "Shoot the Piano Player", a film by Francois Truffaut). Also, it would be an immesurably long list. I try to read about three books a week, if I have time. I usually don't so I'm down to one lately. But, I would like to commend the EDAs for being so well read, and having great taste in literature. I wish everyone read so much. I'd have to mention "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand as one of my faves (that no one has mentioned yet). I've read it four times, and I still cry in parts. It's such a proud novel. And, it's over 1000 pages long. So, if I spent the time to read it four times, take that as a good recommendation. Ayn Rand proves that any emotion, not just sorrow, portrayed powerfully enough, can provoke tears. Music: similar situation. I'd venture to say that I've heard at least half of the "no one else has probably heard of them" submissions on the music lists, because I frequent the libraries often. LIbraries are the best places on the earth. Luckily, the libraries here are very liberal, and have EVERYTHING. Somewhere. Unfortunately, it usually takes forever to find it. Or it's checked out. Oh well. NO Doubt: I don't particularly care for NO Doubt too heavily (if they're on the radio, I won't change the station. But, I won't buy their albums.). It just distresses me that they really changed their sound so much. I guess it shows yet again that Pop sells, ska don't. OH well, they can do whatever they want. It's their prerogative. Here's the list, see if you can figure it out: "Julius Caesar"- Shakespeare (well, it's not actually a book) "Pride and Prejudice"- Jane Austen "Lord of the Rings"- JRR Tolkien (my second time through) "I is for Inoocent"- Sue Grafton "Wizard's First Rule" -Terry Goddkind (second time through this too) Anyone else notice it? Think about the dates they were published (they're in chronological order). About 1500, 1811, 1954, 1992, 1994. It's like reading the evolution of English literature. It's so cool. You can see a whole bunch of different ways that English has been changing over the centuries. Of course, Shakespeare isn't a really good example because he writes in poetic form, but you can see differences in the use of certain words and stuff. One interesting thing I noticed is that Jane Austen's writing is really close to modern day English, it's just written in a more formal style. Anyways, since I'm supposed to be recommending books, out of the ones I'm reading right now I reccomend "Pride and Prejudice", it's really funny and just plain fun to read, "Lord of the Rings", a must-read for anyone who likes fantasy, and most other people will probably like it too, and "Wizard's Fisrt Rule", just cause its good. Some other books I'd liek to reccomend are "The Stand", by Stephen King, one of my favorite books of all time (make sure it's the long version), and "Lonesome Dove" by Larry McMurtry. I don't usually read Westerns, but it's a really good book, the characters are amazing real. It won a Pulitzer prize. And it's loosely based on a true stroy. Wow. All of my reccomended books but "Pride and Prejudice" are about 1000 pages. I liek big books. Most good books end too soon. - --Shaun ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 1997 15:42:59 -0600 From: Ashe Mayfair Subject: Re: NJC:good books.... Hey Greg! - I'll take this opportunity to expound a little on my personal religious beliefs, which have elements in common with so-called "new age" thinking, Hinduism, and some of Jewel's lyrics. I am a pantheist. Pantheists believe that everything and everyone is God. So I really do believe that everyone is pieces of me. I also believe that the biggest problem everyone faces is their self-hate, and that the paramount goal of our lifetimes is to transform this self-hate into self-love. I believe that the reason we hate others is because we hate ourselves, and that once we fully love ourselves we will love everyone else. I believe that "we hate others because they are pieces of ourselves" is a literal, true statement. I believe that while we are most correctly identified as being God, we all also have our human side. The label many give to such a struggling being is "angel." So I do believe that we are literally angels, going about our everyday activities as if we were nothing special, yet we are secretly divine. We never fell from God. - -David G. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 1997 14:47:32 -0800 (PST) From: Julie Bristol Subject: NJC: My fav bands I know this thread is way over, but I just started reading them, and I have to add my $.02. I was an EDA near the very beginning when Jewel was hardly known except by a small group of believers who heard her voice and knew she was talented and would go far. I started the Jewel Lyrics Archive, began the electronic petiton that resulted in Jewel recording "Jessica" for her delayed next album, and did some other work for the EDA's. However, I had to leave the list when I graduated law school and passed the d became an attorney around a year ago. I have met many friends via this list, and became friends with Nedra. However, just as Jewel became very famous, I left. I had just completed a Jewel vacation, seeing Jewel in Los Angeles, Charlotte, Virginia and Ohio while visiting friends and relatives. I live in Southern California. I hope to renew my old friends and meet new ones via this list. The Rugburns really won the crowd over, as everyone went to buy their CD's and t-shirts after their set. Jewel came out with her seemingly favorite new opener, "Near You Always." I'm sure someone has or will post a set list, but she played 11 songs from POY, "Sometimes It Be That Way," The "So Much For Hatred" Song, which she said was brand new and we never heard it before, but I have it on a video from August, The "Nothing Without Love" Song, Chime Bells, and about 4 songs that she said she and Steve just wrote, one she said was the first time she had ever played it in front of people, and my personal favorite new song, "Come Down" (w/ Steve). After she came out for the encore, she had the guy turn on the lights, and I saw her looking up at me telling some guys in front of me not to leave, and so I waved, and she waved back and said hi!!! That definitely made my day. Can't wait until the Lilith Fair!!! Read it if you're up for something different. Also, one of my favorite novels is Mary Shelley's _Frankenstein_. Don't cheat and see the movie, folks, the book is way scarier. The way she came to write it (which she discusses in the forward) is also interesting. Of course, Shakespeare is amazing stuff. I, for one, can rarely bring myself to actually read it though, because Shakespeare was really meant to be seen in performance. My favorites are King Lear and Midsummer Night's Dream. I tend to go for the old favorites. I think Huck Finn is one of the best novels ever. I also like _The Glass Menagerie_ by Tennessee Williams (also a drama, but it can be read). Some foreign authors are good too, like Gabriel Garcia Marquez. _No_One_Writes_to_the_Colonel is very moving. Even though I have yet to find the time to read it, _One_Hundred_Years_of_Solitude_ I've heard is also good. If you're looking for something lighter, A.A. Milne is always happy. :) sarah * Sarah with an 'h' * robeson+@andrew.cmu.edu As I watch the drops of rain, weave their weary paths and die, I know that I am like the rain... Hi everyone, This is one of those rare occasions when I disagree with Igor (whose comments are justifiably highly valued by all EDA's) about anything.... He and Dave the emperor of smurfs (and someone else..Greg?) indicated they thought Jewel's current poetry booklet on sale at her shows is overpriced at $10. Merchandising is (unfortunately) an essential part of touring reality, and the sale of t-shirts and other stuff helps pay for the Tiny Lights tour as well as likely contributing to Ms. Kilcher's personal bank account. Without it, the likelihood is that ticket prices would have to increase or that she would have to play even larger venues to attain the same level of profitability. Neither of these options would be preferable, as has already been discussed here recently in a manner that would be best described as 'spirited'. I think it was the originator of this thread (who might be Greg) who said > for $10 you can go to a bookstore and buy a 200-page paperback > > of t.s. eliot's entire works... That's very true, but for $20 - the price of one of the three Jewel short-sleeve t-shirts for sale at her shows (not to mention the $25 long-sleeved one) - you could probably buy the complete works of Shakespeare. I don't recall anyone being upset with the t-shirt sales, which are probably a LOT more profitable than the booklet. (Typsetting and all other costs aside, having a small printed run for something like that booklet would be pretty expensive per item...more so than the t-shirts...which could still be sold a year from now. After the last concert in April, these booklets are finished.) Hell, let's face it, the t-shirts are more expensive than the darn CD. Which is more important in terms of the relative artistic value that Jewel offers us? I have no qualms paying half the price of a t-shirt for a further offering of her artistic work, which is what I find the poetry booklet to be. There's been some posts recently about which Jewel songs make you cry. ('Don't' always does it for me, but lately I can't get through 'Absence of Fear' without crying either. God, what a wimp I am...) But quite frankly, the poem in the booklet entitled 'Father of a Deaf Girl' was as moving for me as any of her songs...and it wouldn't work as a song at all. It's as a written piece on the page that it's so effective. Sometimes there's a completely different artistic impression that's conveyed when you're hearing something in your OWN head, in YOUR voice, instead of in Jewel's voice. I hope no one feels as though I'm defending her for defending her's sake. I completely agree that nobody - including Ms. Kilcher - is above criticism, and there are some things she's done that I haven't been too crazy about. However, this is not one of them. You know, she could have produced a same size booklet with a few credits and a bunch of pictures of her that we've all seen a dozen times, which would have taken no effort by her at all, and sold it for the same price. And she would have probably sold even MORE copies of it. However, she decided to add some artistic value and responded to the demands that many of US as EDA's have made to her to see more of her poetry. I'm glad she shared it with us, and yes she did so for profit, but that's exactly what will happen with every CD she releases, isn't it? That's what she does for a living. She sells her artistry for money. And that's alright with me. (Now, if she ever did a commercial for Diet Coke, or some product other than something she's produced herself, that would be another story.) Anyway, that's my 3 Canadian cents worth. I eagerly await Sean Hooks' comments on this, as he plays Devil's Advocate so well. Have a nice night one and all.
