Hello my lovely EDA's- WOW!! I don't know where to start. Well first of all, I know that Tim 'Burkeman' is going to be posting a REALLY long account of our incredible journey this weekend so I will fill in more details after that. But I cannot contain my excitement anymore!! I must give you a taste of what happened!! Let's just say that I spent more time with Stinky/Jeff from the Rugburns on Saturday in Columbus and Sunday in Detroit than I did with my lovely EDA's!! (By the way, for those of you who don't know Stinky's real name, it's Jeff, so if I use the names interchangably you'll understand) After the Columbus show on Saturday, Stinky and I were in the lobby chatting,(I had met him earlier in the day with Liz and Tim,he seemed to take to me immediately, and we decided that we were boyfriend/girlfrien !) and he and I decided to go outside and have a smoke. We left the building leaving the EDA crew inside. He then asked me if I drank Jim Beam, "YES" I replied, he said "Come on, lets go have a drink". I think I may have peed my pants at that point, I'm not quite sure! HA! So we walked around the building and headed for the bus. The EDA clan consisting of Liz, Tim, Mia, Mia's boyfriend, Gerrit, Lauren and I'm sorry if i'm forgetting anyone else, followed behind Stinky and I. Some crazed girls approached Stinky on the way, one of the girl's asked if I was his girlfriend, I said "why don't you ask him" so she did and he said "yes, of course she is" and planted a big wet one on me. So we got to where the bus was parked and he said that he was sorry but he could only take one person on the bus, that was the rules. So I looked back at the EDA clan and said "I'll be right back" with my eyes bugging out of my head!! There were fans surrounding both tour buses, and I just walked right on, yes, I felt really cool!! We went to the back of the bus. Oh by the way, the bus is really plush with t.v's, stereo systems, couches, a kitchen, bathroom, 6 bunk beds, and a sitting room in the rear. We went in the little sitting room, Jeff pulled out a bottle of Beam from the fridge on the way and we closed the door behind us. Jeff lit a few candles and we started drinking Beam right out of the bottle. We talked about life for a little and all of a sudden he shouts out "Oh Shit"! He had forgotten to get his clothes and guitar at the hotel (yes he does play guitar, just not on stage). He asked if I had a car and I promptly offered to drive him to get his things!! We walked off the bus and many smiling and curious faces awaited me. I whispered to Liz that I was taking Jeff to his hotel to get his things. "Can I come?" she said with utter excitement. The word spread quickly and suddenly everyone was asking to go. I really wish I would have had a bigger car, but there was only enough room for 5 of us. So Stinky hopped in front, and Liz, Tim, and Lauren got in back. Stinky immediately reached for my strereo and said "What are we listening to?" I replied "The Rugburns" he said "Oh god, don't you have any good music?" LOL!! So Tim gave me a tape and I put in his astonishing performance of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and his mock interview with Jewel. Stinky was laughing so hard that I swear he had tears in his eyes!! He loved it!! You guys have to hear it, it's hilarious!! We got back to the theater and Stinky and I once again went back on the bus. I really did feel bad for leaving everybody but I had to be selfish for once in my life, I mean how many times am I going to be able to be on the Rugburns tour bus with Stinky?! It had to be done!! Now those of you who have seen Stinky's stage presence, you know how crazy / wild / zany he is! A sure delight to see! Well inside that crazy little head of his, he is one of the most intelligent and articulate people I have ever met! It really kind of caught me off guard! He is very deep, but that's not even the right word to describe him. I really felt lucky to be able to see the serious side of him. We discussed poetry, books, reincarnation, souls, tarot cards, and astrological signs to name a few things. I got to look at the tour book and found out all the details of what time sound checks start and when is the best time to catch a glimpse of Jewel and the Burns etc, etc.. I could hear the wailing cries of my lil sis outside because she was freezing her patooty off along with Tim and Mia! John Castro came in the back and asked me if Liz and the gang could leave without me. The guilt was building, so I felt it was time to come to their rescue and end my fun in the bus with Stinky. Stinky was very excited to hear that I was going to be in Detroit! He told me where to find the bus and to make sure we got there early because sound check wasn't until 4:00, so we had all day to hang out. He talked of going out to lunch, etc.. So he walked all of us to my car, planted a few kisses here and there, even one to Liz on my window, his lip prints are still there, and we said goodbye for the evening! So I drove home on cloud nine, and we prepared for the next days journey to Detroit. Tim and Mia stayed at our house bringing back fond memories of Lizstock!! I'll post Part II - The Detroit Diaries later!!! =)Shelly=) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 16:49:37 +0000 From: Matt Rhone Subject: Rather Tardy 9:30 club report Okay. I know the 9:30 club show was like almost a week ago, but I've been on Spring break, and, well, the only computer I had has a 2400 bps modem. Ouch. Anyway. I got to the club at about 4:20 to meet Paul who was bringing me an EDA poster. He wasn't there so we left and went to McDonald's. When we got back I and some dorks I go to school with met Paul and I got my poster. No need for me to go into much detail here. just read Paul's account of the evening, as I was wise enough to stick with him. I must say the Rugburns were great. This was my first Jewel show so I knew not what to expect. After the show I stuck around in front of the stage and nearly got trampled when she came out to sign autographs. I did get my EDA poster signed. Twice actually. She signed it once with a ball point which you could barely see. Then someone handed her a sharpie and she resigned it. About this time a managed to squeeze out of the wall of people and ran into Paul who was saying something about Lenedra and backstage. So once again I decided it would be prudent to stick with him. The guy at the entrance to the backstage area didn't like it much, but when Paul went backstage to see Lenedra I followed him in. (Paul.......You kick ass). At point I had my EDA poster signedd by Jewel and Lenedra so I began to work on the Rugrurns. I got all their autographs too. Damn. That night just kicked ass. I hung around a bit longer, met some EDA's then left to find that my car parked on an alley behind the club had not been stolen :-). This is all for now. I nust now skim thru the 20 or so digests that have accumulated in my mailbox. - --Good Ol' Boy-- -- The Angel with the forgotten name -- :-> ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 13:57:59 -0800 (PST) From: " Claypool (EDA)" Subject: re: too famous Hello fellow Eda's i am the one that made this issue into a whole contreversy and will respond to 3 of the many posts on this matter. She also commented on the intimacy of the setting, and when one person did yell out something obnoxious she ignored them, and when the croud was getting to noisy she nicly said "shut up" Therefore she likes a quiter audience, esp. when she's playing. >Are you saying that just us EDA's should be allowed to go to the clubs, that >Jewel should live in her van, and to screw the rest of the fans who >don't have internet access? 'Cos that could very easily be the case if >she quit large audiences. okay..i'm not trying to say only eda's, i'm saying any people that can respect jewel and love her for what she's worth not because she has the best selling cd in the local cd shop! Like i said in my first post..she won't move back into her van if she does not attract 10000 people to every concert, she will live a happy, life and she will definatly be wealthy, (don't worry), and i'm not trying to say screw all the fans that don't have net access or only have poy love them all. now...from SuPeRdEfOrMeD aNgEl, >If she isn't happy being big, then she'll go where she wants in her career, do what she wants, >and we'll be here when she gets back. :-) also.. this is a re: on the letter saying that after a while she will die down (sorry i deleated your letter) now... excuse me have we all heard of the rolling stones..hmm pink Floyd...ohhh aerosmith...i know u2...okay, neil young...ahh the Boss, and that Bob Dylan guyand my lord Tony Bennet. Wow, that kinda is not good for your point about people dying after their 5 min.of fame these are people that have been around for 20+ years and have held the biggest concerts of last year...and U2 this one probably. If Jewel's talent is what we say it is people will love her. and unlike SuPeRdEfOrMeD aNgEl's post i don't know how she will do with her carrer to eliminate some fans. Will she say "Please stop listing to me" or put out a horrible album so a whole bunch of people won't like her. (sorry for my sarcasim) come'on, she can't control her career, no one can, not even us, i just posted my opinion here, don't worry i wont kill all the Jewel fans around me so that i can see her in smaller places. here below is sean hooks post once more.. i agree w/ everything on it. He definatly brought up many of the points i did (Blues Traveler analogy) and his are great too we should all read it, once more! my friend Marcus also EDA, were talking about this today, and he said one very good point "In the small place Jewel seemed more of a regular person, then if she was ina huge area." Which is right, but her laughing, talking with the croud, asking us questions, not just saying "Hey, Bonjour all you french people that live up here" like Steven Tyler did in '92 to Toronto. She seems like a great regular person, just with a special gift. remember folks we cannot change Jewel's future of popularity...no one can, not even herself (or if she did it would definatly surprise us all) Remember she not in it for the money, or the fame but for the joy and happiness, lets let her have it :) thanks Scott ps. I'm sorry, but does anyone else find it a little disturbing that Jewel changed her name? i mean Shes always talking about how we must be true to ourselves. So how can she be true to herself if she isnt even using her real name. when someone chenges their name its usually because there is something in their past that they want to forget, the other "popular" reason for changing your name is when an actor or singer changes his or her name for images purposes (Johnny cougar mellencamp and tom criuse ring a bell?) these guys changed their names to make them seem "Cooler" to their audience... it was a very superficial thing for them to do. I dont like my name but i would never seriously think about changing it. My name is a part of my Identity like it or not. I dont think Jewel could have done it for superficail purposes because when she did it she wasnt famous... no one even knew who she was. Was she like preparing for the future because she knew someday she would have everyone in the world knowing who she was? even if it was so. i still dont understand... how can she tell us that we have to be true and honest to ourselves while she is not? Shiva Diva Doo Wop-- A cassette made by jewel for a few friends when she was still playing in SD clubs. You'll never find it, so stop looking. Only about 300 copies?? exist, so you'l probably have to have it willed to you or something. Save The Linoleum-- A promo CD issued by Atlantic before POY came out. & songs, 5 of them non album cuts(notable is Flower, which Jewel doesn't sing anymore--unless you have the list's secret weapon Selena in the crowd!!). Used to be simple to find. Now it's increasingly harder. If you pay 287.50 or whatever SDF said--you're a dope...Here's how I got mine: 1. Traded a regionally produced radio cd to another EDA for a copy of his. A lot of radio stations still have a copy, they just don't know it. It's probably in the pile of stuff that labels sent them that they thought they'd never play on the air. 2. Picked up the phone and dialed every store that I could find in the yellow pages on the web. While it cost me $15 in phone calls, I found a shop owner in CA who had a personal copy that he sold me for $20. All it takes is time and patience. Phylis Barnabee Finally Gets A Bra-- Promo produced the first time YWMFM was released. Four songs- all non album. The Jaun Patino(Lisa Loeb's producer/Boyfriend??) remix is on here. Kind of cool. Not very expensive and relatively plentiful. I've bought one copy from an EDA for $20, and bought 3 copies from a reputable CD store on the web. 2 @ $15 and 1 @ $10. One is now residing in Guam, and the other two are still here with me. There's a ton of other promos that have a different version of a song here and there. If you have a question about them, Dave D(once again) is probably the man with the answer. He is a Jewel collector extraordinaire! I'll always try to help to, with my limited knowledge. BTW, no, I'm not selling any of my extras, so don't ask:) I hope this helps. These two CD's are getting hard to find, but they're worth it. Right now Jewel has some top hits so there are people byeing up PoY and attending the concert. And, no they don't really care what happens to Jewel, and, Yes in time they will forget about it and PoY will just become one of two things: 1) Just another CD gathering dust on the shelf with all the other CD's.. or 2) sold to the local music shop (I saw a copy of PoY in the used section here just yesterday). So all of you that want Jewel not to be popular: Don't worry, it'll fade (lest till the next CD). As for the return to the good old days of small clubs: that is something that is yet to be seen. >From: Antichrist Superstar > >I had my first taste of the Rugburns at the Philly show, and all I can say >is... wow, what a waste of time. I really get the feeling half of you just >like them because Jewel is Mike's friend. I have been part of the list for >about a year now and I have seen how dedicated you all are. I think that's >real cool. But the Rugburns are nonsense. Every song they sing is about a >girl they don't have anymore. And every song sounds exactly the same. It's all just a matter of tast. I look at the 10 list most of the time and wonder what army of monkeys pic such crap and call it good music. But the point is that a lot of people like them, even if I don't. It's kind of like me and Baywatch. I hate that show, yet it's suppose to be the #1 TV show in the WORLD. It's really all just a matter of tast. I've now heard many Rugburns songs and have to say that I like em. I'll never rank em among my favorite bands or anything, but they are just fun to listen to (in my opinion of course). And, yes, if not for Jewel I would have never listened to them at all, but if I didn't like em then I wouldn't listen. I've heard Jewel talk a little about some of the muscians she likes and can't say I really care for them to much so I'm not just jumpin on the band wagon cus Jewel and a bunch of the EDA's like the Rugburns. - -Ashe Mayfair ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 97 23:45:46 UT From: "CASEY HANSEN" Subject: SJC Fiona Apple concert I went to the Fiona Apple show last night in L.A. and when she played the song "Criminal" she went off stage then came back with angel wings on. It was pretty cool! Hmmm, an angel where have we heard of angels before...I just can't think of anything! :P Well I would go see Fiona if she comes to your town, but go get some coffee or something after the show because it does drain you a little bit because all of her songs are slow and long, but it was still cool! Danke, Casey ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Mar 1997 18:57:37 -0500 (EST) From: She Who Is Subject: SJC: Jewel's name change? Responding to comments on Jewel not being true to herself by changing her name I personally don't think there is anything wrong with changing your name if you feel that you need to or feel called to do so. Just because Jewel may have changed her name doesn't mean that she's not being true to herself. The name you are given when you are born is NOT, I repeat, NOT, who you are. It's a word that people give you when you're born so they have a way to refer to you. It is a word that people use when they talk about you so that other people know who they are talking about, and it's a word people use when they are looking for you in a big place so you know they're looking for you. It is NOT who you are, and "A Rose by any other name would smell as sweet." A rose doesn't smell good because it's called a rose. Perhaps Jewel, if she did indeed change her name, which still remains uncertain, felt that "Jewel" more aptly fit the Her inside than "Juel" did. But if we are to judge someone on whether or not they are being true to themselves (can we really DO such a thing? Where isi our point of reference?), I believe we should do it on the basis of something less superficial than a name or even a name change. I've been warned my sig is too long. At Boston, after the show she had FOUR TV interviews, so I would imagine that the same thing may be happening in all the big towns. Just another thing that goes with fame, TV & radio get first dibs. :( So, my guess is that by time she's done with the media, she's ready to call it a night, as they have to travel to the next town either that night or in the morning.
