But folks, do you think Jewel will be happy when she plays infrount of 1000's of noicy, screaming fans? 2) i am happy that she was nominated for a grammy, and am sad she did not win.,..but.. like jewel says popularity, or lack of it will not change her. I believe the grammy's are just a big media hype. It's great that she's nominated, but does it really mean much! 3) It's like the old saying what's better 10000 people that own your cd or 5000 that love you to death and are huge fans. I believe that Jewel would tend to choose the 5000 that her music has made a difference. Apreciate her lyrics, and her emotion. Not that they bought the cd 'cause their friends did or because there may be a pic. in there that show her boobs! Finally, i am not trying to hold any joy from one of the greatest lyricists and singers but i would like to continue seeing her in small intimate clubs, where you can comunicate with the artist, rather then the stadium, but Because of Jewels lovely work i know she will be the next dylan and fill hte stadiums :) Thanks, i know you don't all agree w/ my views but it's something to think about, and if jewel is happy with her fame...i am happy too! Does anyone else notice the similarities between Jewel's "philosophy" and that of Quakerism. I am a product of Quaker education and was taught for years that Divine inspiration comes through silence and connecting with your "inner light". In fact, Quaker "church" is actually called Meeting for Worship, an activity which basically involves a bare room with only wooden benches facing each other. Quakers will sit in silence for an hour or so and "meditate" on the inner light to see what it reveals. No one speaks unless someone feels "moved" to do so. Otherwise the hour is spent in complete silence. Now, I have often heard Jewel say something to the effect of "in silence we create ourselves" as well as discussing the merits of growing up in a quiet, rural environment. Now, she seems to have woven her own philosophies from many religious and ideaslogical strains and her music is filled with Christian imagery, but I don't think I remember hearing Quakerism mentioned. I just wonder if anyone else picked up on this as I find it just nifty. Not that I'm complaining. I guess It's just that the only other time I have saw her live was at Jewelstock and I'm a little spoiled. Anyway, I loveded it. i can't wait for her to come back. I saw some EDA's Mike, Mike, Mia, Jennifer, Her friend(sorry I don't remember your name), Dan, Liz, Liz's Sis(sorry I don't remember your name too I hate being refered to by my siblings), and a couple others. Nothing interesting other than that. I found the security irritating also but at least they let some people up to the stage. One guy had a Alaska Driver's License. She asked what county. he said Ankorage and she Kinda made a face, A couple girls gave her a necklace and a bracelet and she said that she get's so many gifts that they should give it to someone else and say it's from her. I went with my aunt, who had never really heard of Jewel before the show (I needed a ride to the show). Here's my short version of my impressions: Well, we got in just about 7:30, right when the Rugburns were starting. I own "Morning Wood" from them, and kind of knew what to expect. They were really fun. I really liked the alphabet song and the u.p.s song. Steve also wrote a song dedicated to Detroit, which was neat because he mentioned Ernie Harwell and stuff. He also stage-dove. A good band, and then I got to see them later after the show. Jewel came on later. She was great. My seat weren't as good as I heard (I thought it was second row; actually it was second row in section C, which was still pretty good). It was really the first time I had heard any of her non-POY songs. The highlights for me were "Carnivore", "You Were Meant For Me", "Foolish Games", "Adrian", and this other new song she sang towards the beginning. My aunt loved her. I let her borrow the cd before we left, and she kept saying over and over again after the show that the cd does not do her justice. I agree totally. I've really gotten into Jewel because of her lyricization and live performances I've seen on TV, not in general for her work on POY. But my aunt kept saying she's never heard a voice as amazing as Jewel's, and the cd did not do her justice at all. She raved the whole way home. The crowd was okay, better than I expected after all the bad comments about crowds from fellow EDA's. Towards the beginning of her set, Jewel had to say, "If you're talking, shut up", and everyone cheered. It was nice. The thing that really struck me is the number of people who felt the need to get up in the middle of songs and leave. I always learned that you were supposed to do your moving around in between songs if necessary, and I thought it took a lot of nerve to make the whole row stand up so you can slide by in the middle of a song like "Foolish Games". The venue was okay. Actually, the State Theater was a really neat building, but inside, the smoke was terrible. Everyone just about was smoking, and it got pretty irritating. People were flicking ashes and stubbing out cigarettes on the carpeted floor, which not only is gross but also certainly a fire hazard. So that was annoying. Overall, though a great night. Jewel's voice is astonishing, and now I'm so excited about hearing more from Jewel. - -- Mark A. Even though it always has played out the same, I guess it's become some sort of ritual or rite of passage. Who thinks Dylan should have stayed acoustic, and who thinks it was good for him to go electric?
