McLachlan, whose new album is out in June, will appear on all dates of the 35-city tour, which kicks off July 4, in Vancouver, with the following artists set to appear on a rotating basis: NATALIE MERCHANT, JEWEL, SHERYL CROW, JOAN OSBORNE, SUZANNE VEGA, MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER, EMMYLOU HARRIS, the CARDIGANS, JULIANA HATFIELD, LISA LOEB, AIMEE MANN and NENEH CHERRY. This is my first post to the list. Jewel's European Tour is due to be starting on April 10th. That's only about 4 weeks away and still there are no certain dates and venues for this period. Does anyone know anything more about the tour? I first heard Jewel on VH1 Europe and this so for has been the only place I know of to play her music in the UK. I had to buy my copy of Pieces Of You off the internet as the London stores were charging import prices for it. I would really like to understand how an artist like Jewel can be so successful in the US but remain unheard of in Britain. Over here the Spice Girls have been absolutely huge. Personally, I think they are the poorest performers on the planet. They are clearly manufactured and have no real talents of their own. However, due to clever marketing and a lot of investment, they have become more successful than the Beatles and last I heard, they were No.1 in the Billboard chart as well. Anyway, the point is that for Jewel to make it in this country, she will need some major promotion work behind her. Unfortunatly Atlantic Records over here don't have much of a track record in the promotion department but we can hope. I do hope that Jewel tours this fair isle soon. I love her music and wait in anticipation to her first UK appearance in the charts. thanks - -- - ----------------------------------------------------- Myles MacRae - Imperial College London - ISE 1st Year mgm1@doc.ic.ac.uk - m.macrae@doc.ic.ac.uk - ----------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Mar 1997 13:12:24 -0500 (EST) From: Rachel Kramer Bussel Subject: Jewel profile There is a profile of Jewel at: http://www.islandear.com/script1/muspro.pl?name=jewel.txt If that doesn't work, go to www.islandear.com then click on music and under profiles it should list Jewel. I go to an all girl Catholic High School. On Wednesday, the bishop visited us for a Penance service. We had an all school assembly for the all school portion of the service. At the beginning of the service, the lights were dimmed, the auditorium was quiet....THEN out of nowhere, the opening strains of WWSYS were heard echoing off the walls. I nearly jumped out of my seat!!! As I was sitting in my seat grooving to the song that I never listen to while I am at home, I noticed something strange....other voices singing along?? Yes, several other voices, voices of classmates singing along to Jewel at a penance service?? It was definitely weird. I figured that it must be a sign since I was to see her that night. =) Well, there is my JC. I am looking forward to seeing you all at Columbus and Detroit, and at some other concerts along the way of this tour!! ;-) Now that I am caught up on my sleep, I think I will get ready to go underwear shopping for Stevie!! =) Have a wonderful day! ~Liz I know that it sounds cliche, but I'm tired of all this violence ~Steven J. And later Adam defined Wicca as "an earth-based pagan religion." wich it is and it isn't. He also is correct that they practice Macick...though the first to coin the term where the Kabbalist in the early twentieth century. Wicca is a modern relegion that traces most of it's roots back to early Celtic pagan practices...though it takes a few of it's magical elements from sorces such as the Order of the Golden Dawn and other hermetic orders. Wicca is based on animism...the beleif that all things have an animateing spirit given to them by the union of the God and the Goddess. They beleive in essence that all things are our brothers and sisters and should be treated as such. Hince the earth-based part of the relegion. There is much more to it than that of course and if you are interested I can give you about a million good books to read on the subject. But for now that will suffice. So is Jewel a Wiccan...as Adam said it is doubtful. However it is known that Jewel was adopted by a Native American family in Alaska (it was in Alaska was it not?). The Native American's are also pagan...and in my humble opinion much closer to the true spirit of paganism than Wiccans...no offense to any of my green brothers or sisters out there. :) Give this fact it is probably (*and I stress Probably*) a good bet that Jewel if she has a religion (and she doesn't talk about it much so we should probably not pry) it is more than likely a form of Native American Spirituality...since it is know that she was a Mormon till age 8...but nothing is know after that point. This is of course speculation...but I like to think it is educated speculation. Hope that clears alittle up fer you all. "Come Back" Your squinty eyes stare at me and you slured speach talks to me and your stumbled walk comes to me but you are nowhere to be seen I stare into your eyes and see a zombie- but you can't stare back into mine, you smell of smoke and Mary Jane and may be something more- but Kymmy you can't leave me- Come back for a visit sometime and walk in a straight line have your eyes open wide and smell of petruly not of cheap wine- I liked it when I was five and you knew everything you were smarter then anyone I knew- I went to school you showed me the bus you always looked out for me but now you turn to Mary Jane and beer and booze and then you puke- hung over and halfway there bring back Kimmy the one I knew -Christine '97 *************************************************I didn't cry about this poem until just now when I rewrote it. Now though I have come to face my worst fear. I also feel sorry for anyone who will have to face this problem or who has faced out I just hope she survives it because I can't survive without her. -Chrissy ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Mar 1997 22:44:34 EST From: kseiden17@juno.com (Kim A Seiden) Subject: Re: West Coast Hot Dog Fest : held all day, april 6th, at our home. >> >>Just had to tell everybody that this is my daughter's birthday - >she'll be >8!!!!!! I really find these sorts of comments bothersome at best, and crude and degrading not only to Jewel Kilcher, but to anyone to whom this comment might be applied. Maybe the appropriate thing to do here would have been to vent my irritation to the member privately, but this bothered me enough that I wanted to ensure that others on the list had a chance to see this. As a forewarning to others, if you are tempted to post this sort of trash in the future, please exclude me from your list of recipients. Again, I apologize for the public outburst. Well, we got some with smiley faces for Christmas; I would think Taz or Marvin or Daffy would be especially cool for the 'burns. I doubt you can find them, but a broken-heart pattern might be even more appropriate. I had mistakenly listed Jewel's Lincoln Center performance in the TNT Production of the Wizard of Oz as taking place on October 5, 1995. It was actually a month later (November 5,1995) Anyway, the executive producer (Jon Brauer, who had the insight to cast Jewel in it) contacted me. Apparently, Jon was checking out Adam's "Pieces of Jewel" site & the chronology pages & noticed the mistake. We corresponded briefly & he confirmed what many of us knew. The vets might be curious to hear this previously known story direct from the source. And for the benefit of all those new folks curious how Jewel landed that role, here's the story as per Jon: <> As always, for those interested in Jewel's performances past, present & future as well other significant info about her career so far, take a look at the Performance Chronology located at: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jchrono.htm Corrections, Suggestions & Additions welcome.
