Just curious. I know there are a bunch of folks on the list, but who live in the Motown Area. Cool Beans. Subject: These are days....(Part II)(Alas, long, too) Okay, kiddlies, before you all pretended to defrost the outhouse, I was telling about the end of the Providence concert way back when. After the show, we talked again to all the Rugs. Stinky ran away with three of the messengers of the goddess Sekhmet, but John took me and my kids backstage into the Rugs' dressing room to get a picture of him and "the cookie." After we came out, we watched while Steve taught the chords of YWMFM to a mesmerized nine-year-old lad. Atz walked up, Dennis gave him a tape of the Boston paradise show and the Jewelstock tapes (nobody ever complained, but some of us wondered what he would think about some of the songs, as he told us he had not heard any of Jewel's recent songs, and the night before was the first time he had heard her perform since before POY was released! Atz was returning to Alaska from NYC the next morning, but he told us he has a compilation of his own more recent material, we mentioned Igor's label idea, and he asked if we could distribute it for him through the net, which we jumped up and down about; all I could say to the EDAs then is "it's in the works." Then Atz and Steve took a look at my "designed by Stinky" Rugburns limited edition tee shirt. On the spot, Steve and Atz wrote and sang me a song about my shirt and how my belly hangs over my belt. This one goes on the resume reel for my kids! ("I'd rather have a shitty body than a shitty resume" --Steve Poltz.) We finally said our goodbyes (except for Dennis, who explained the meaning of life to me and my daughter until 2:30 the next morning. He gave her two "prototype" EDA pins, one of which I wore while getting my picture taken with Jay Leno the following Friday, but I'm getting ahead of myself here). My kids LOVED meeting Dennis; he talked directly to them. My son later remarked that my friends were really neat! (he was prepared and in fact eager to find to the contrary, simply because I promised that they would be really neat, even though I hadn't yet "met" most of them face-to-face, and it's his "job" as an adolescent to poke holes in the thought balloons written by others! I certainly did!). We slept till nearly noon, ate a camp breakfast (rubber crepes and sugar sauce, greasy breakfast meats, omelettes, etc.), and headed down the highway listening to Jewel concert tapes back to the Dirty Ol' Town with which all NYers and ex-NYers have an intense love/hate relationship. More EDAs gathered at the Mad Fish (how prohetic of the mutant pcb virus that caused Mad Fish disease in the early 21st Century!). Tammy and Rob had set it up for us to all meet there, so they did their job and came last. Meanwhile, we met up with Eric "Crash Boy," Jared (again), Tegan (again), Thirza (the 14 year-old girl who has guys committing Hari Kiri over her -- thanks to her, we all had good tickets together in the front orchestra), JenniferY from Ct., Stacey (StayMur) and her two friends, also from Ct., Brooklyn's own Anthony Amato (babe, Poe fan/ CPA) and his need for success (syn.: wife), Jon Reade, the insightful angel from Pa. (my kids loved him, too) and his friend, W1ggy2:"AMY!!!" (the one I wanted most to meet, based on the secret dossier I had read) and her friend, Katherine Hendry and HER friend, and I think Tom O'Brian was there (I know he was at the theater). When we got to the Beacon, we met up with other EDAs, but I don't remember who, because Bob Duffey and Steve Poltz popped their heads out of the entrance doors to talk to the gathering throng. Bob said "I thought you were going to call me for passes; they're all gone now, but tomorrow I can get you in." Well, Bob, how is it that you didn't get around to returning my calls, I thought (but didn't say); I just said that I would be flying back to L.A. the next morning (my kids asked Jon to adopt them so they could go without me)<----that's an Igoraphor--ed.). Bob was with his gf (Karen???), whose face blesses the cover of "Morning Wood." The hall lights flashed, and we scooted to our seats. You all have heard the tales of the hooterhooters, etc. I won't repeat them. At the show, at one point Jewel asked for requests, and I yelled for Fritz Creek Store. Lenedra leaned over to my daughter and asked her if that was the internet fan club. "Yup." When the show ended, she signed Nicole's Jewel shirt, and I took everyone's picture with 'Nedra, but she seemed rushed and didn't wait for me to ask for one. Maybe another time, I thought. My car was parked right next to the theater, so I got posters for a few of the EDAs who wanted them. We said our goodbyes to the EDAs who hadn't ditched us to go to the secret party, and returned to LI to decompress in the barium assault chamber before my return flight to L.A. early Monday morning. I was still on an upbeat feeling, though, and I knew I would be going to the Leno taping on Friday. Now cadetlets, go fill up the tupperware with dirt, and I'll finish the story.
