This list has a very friendly atmosphere, which is not what I usually find on a lot of mailing lists I'm on. I just bought the Pieces of You CD, and I'm listening to it right now. I think it's great! Jewel's music and lyrics really touch the soul, and teach us all about life. Before, I used to think that No Doubt should have gotten the Best New Artist Grammy, but now that I know more about Jewel and have gotten closer to her and her music, I think Jewel is more deserving of the Grammy, even though Grammies don't really mean anything. Just because she didn't win, it doesn't change my opinion about her. Don't get me wrong, No Doubt fans. I still love No Doubt, and they're my favorite band, but Jewel is just more deserving. I'm curious what the audience at the upcoming Toronto show will be like. Toronto has been a stronghold for Jewel supporters, and a favourite stop of hers ever since her incredible residency at C'est What almost exactly two years ago. She did a show at the Bathurst St. theatre a couple of months later which, as incredible as it seems, equalled Jewelstock for audience respect. I listened to my tape of the show again today, and was amazed all over again by what a great show it was, and how the audience was completely silent except when roaring with applause, or shouting out names of non-album songs in response to Jewel's call for requests, and how no one told her to yodel (or take it off--*fume*). I mean, Jewelstock was pretty special because it amounted to what was pretty much an all star selection of audience members :-) , but that Bathurst St Theatre show was just ordinary people paying Jewel an inordinate amount of respect, which she commented on more than once during the show. BTW, I completely forgot about the fact that EDA Tom O'Brien is featured on it, as Jewel makes everyone say "hi" to him. "Everyone say, 'Hi, TOM!'" :-) Anyway, I'd love to meet more EDA's. I may or may not be wearing my Jewelstock T-shirt, and I probably won't be holding up an EDA sign, but I'll identify myself to anyone who does! Or we could meet up before the show. I would offer up my place for a post-concert EDA get-together for a playing of rare Jewel video and audio stuff, but it's Canadian Music Week here in Toronto and I think I'm going to be rushing off to another concert as soon as Jewel's ends. Steve P.S. please address any replies directly to me, as well as the list, as I am no longer on the list proper. P.P.S Almost forgot, Jewel will apparently be appearing at MuchMusic at 1:45pm. Hopefully the appearance will feature a live performance. Set those VCRs folks! My apologies if this announcement has already been made. So here is the info again (is this in the FAQ?). There is a book called "MINDFIRE: Dialogues in the Other Future", written by Alexander Blair-Ewart. It's a series of interviews conducted by the author with what he calls "some of the most provocative thinkers and activists in the world today." Chapter 8 contains his interviw with Jewel, and since this is a book of philosophy, it explores and expands upon Jewel's ideals, more than her music as TV or radio interviewers do. It was written in 1995, around the end of Jewel's small residency gigs, before she significantly hit the charts. Mindfire is published by a Toronto pulisher, Somerville House. The cover price is $24.95 Canadian, but I seem to recall that they accept the same price in American funds, and include shipping to the U.S. for that price. (That may have changed though so don't hold me to it.) For more info or to order online, go to their new site at: http://www.sombooks.com/adult/catalogue/1895897432.html Mindfire: Dialogues in the Other Future ISBN 1-895897-43-2 Somerville House Publishing 3080 Yonge St., Suite 3000 Toronto, Ontario M4N 3N1 Canada (416) 488-5938 If you're into metaphysics and philosophy, you'd probably find this a pretty interesting book in its entirety. Otherwise, I'd say it's still worth the 25 bucks for a serious Jewel fan to have in his or her collection, especially if you like what she has to say as much as you like her music. Somerville House is a pretty small publisher by the way, so this might well become collectible in the future too. I think the only album I'm missing is Live In America, since I just got POP today. It hasn't dethroned October as my favorite album, nor Achtung Baby as my second favorite, but I still think it's great. "Staring at the Sun" is also one of my favorites, but my electronica leanings force me to nominate "Mofo" as the best song on the album. Plus, the first line to that song is "Lookin' for to save my save my soul." Sound familiar? ;) Yes, the lyrics DO go "save my save my." I am NOT dysxecil! I don't know WHY my mother joined D.A.M. (Mothers Against Dyslexia, for you uninformed types). Whoops. Jewel's dyslexic, isn't she? Wow, that was a new one to me. A dyslexic poet. That could make either an Oscar-winning film or a REALLY bad "Saturday Night Live" sketch (which is apparently the modus operandi on that show lately). Tom Morales: I think "inogue" is some nasty fungus people get in their eyebrows. But you were right: Jewel's ingenue image took a hike during the Charlie Rose interview. Anyone else squirm during the higher moments of "Emily" in the sadistic expectation of a strange croaking sound? She makes the singing look so easy, but the projection and range required by her music sure don't do no favors for her throat. And why the hell doesn't she play "Jessica?" I love that song so much more than its commercially-compromised replacement (for those scratching their noggins at this: Jewel rewrote the more personal "Jessica" into "Emily" for Sean Penn's "The Crossing Guard" film). Anyone think Jewel may be reconsidering her admonishment to us NOT to bring EDA bats to the concerts? I know they fly around and make scary noises and get stuck in Miss Kilcher's hair, but they should also leave some nice stinky guano on the shoulders of her newfound fan brigade: The Testosterone Volcanoes. How much money do y'all think Jewel will have spent on candles at the end of this "Tiny Yet Numerous Lights" tour? How many people think Tom Proven and I can get Jewel's attention from the twelfth row of the Berkeley Community Theater? How many people think we'll actually try? How do you think we'll do it? Bright flashing lights? Screams of "PLAY 'FLOWER' DAMN IT!"? Getting naked? This last one may also be an effective method of ridding the theater of Testosterone Volcanoes (side effect: Jewel will also run screaming from the venue). Anyone notice how flowers smell sweeter when you use a Goldschlager bottle as a vase? Anyone remember how excited we all got when we saw Jewel mentioned in a magazine or on MTV? Anyone remember when we had to scour the county to find a store that carried "Pieces of You?" Anyone remember when Colin Stuckless had the only site on the Web with any information about Jewel? Anyone remember seeing her open for Edwin McCain for only seven dollars? Anyone notice how Trent Reznor's eye color keeps changing? Isn't it sad how I now change the channel whenever "You Were Meant For Me" comes on? Isn't it infuriating how unsurprising it is that Jewel is now VH1's Artist of the Month? It seemed inevitable. I'm not quite so rabidly anti-fame as Sean Hooks, but I'm definitely jaded. I'm happy for her and all and I still love her music, but nostalgia can sure be depressing. I'm sorta in between not bein' new to the list but I'm not vet, either. However, we all have to meet this kid someday. So much energy!! It's unbelievable. I think that everyone should make a point of meeting her, like a new years resolution type thingie. Next "stock" (by God, I SWEAR I'll get there somehow!!!) someone make a point to bring her along, ok? Just don't give her any candy and such....hyper city^_^; Red dye #3? That would be a sight to see (hey, that rhymes). All of you would add so much to the gathering, though. Think of how much more she would add!!! That reminds me...if you're reading this.....HAPPY BIRTHDAY LIZ!!!! I don't know you, but, hey. Sorry that it's late. At any rate, none of us would probably be able to understand "Little Miss Neeti" for the first five hours or so, what with her energetic voice popping in and out of our ears and bouncing in our skulls the entire time. We would have to be content to sit there and try to follow every word the lil' hummingbird spoke:) Yes, must meet her someday. It'd be good for all of us. Cheer us all up:) That's all:) Thank you for your time:) Brendan "up late and existing on coca-cola and lucious frosting" Carroll P.S. It all kinda rubs off on you after a while:) Happy stuff:) Crazy stuff:) =20 That's it, I'm outta here. =20 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Mar 97 13:41:34 UT From: "CASEY HANSEN" Subject: Late, Late show Does anybody have the capablitlty to tape the Tom Schneider show that Jewel was on? The reason that most packages get damaged within the system is usually due to: 1) high amount of flow on the conveyor belt system within the operation. This is usually caused by a Jamb of packages or leads to a jamb which in turns causes the force and weight of every package behind, to crush what's in front. 2) Poor load methods used by the outbound loaders in the semi feeders. (Feeder = trailer). Usually with small packages, my shipping firm tries to maintain and ensure that your package will be safe from getting crushed by loading several small packages set for a certain destination in larger plastic bags. These bags are then placed on top of package walls or used to fill air space to "lock in" the load. This method, if followed correctly, eliminates aprx. 90% of all claims. Another interesting note is that in some cases, where the destination is close enough to the origin, UPS 2nd Day air packages are actually sent via ground. In other words you are paying more for a service you don't need! If you are thinking about shipping a package through UPS, and want to know more about their services, I would encourage you to check out there web page at www.ups.com. You will be able to find out what rates are, track packages, and find out what the current process rate is from the origin to destination. [Oops, it looks like I've given away where I work now :) ] Happy shipping! This has not been the only post along these lines, but it was (to me at least) the last straw. People have been criticising others, more then once, publically, about statements they have made, about opinions they hold, or just about anything else in existance. The public replies they got were flamatory in nature. I don't think either is justified. Once in a while, people tend to feel a bit down, or in a bad mood, or god knows how. They vent it everywhere, because that is the centuries-old human habit. More often then not, they aren't aware of it. When Jewel didn't get either Grammy, I was really mad, but before I wrote to the list, I read my mail, and saw two threads of letters. One was about how the grammys were a hoax, a fix, or whatever, and the other was about the dress. By the time I got through all the "grammys-hoax" letters, I felt better about the whole thing, and had no need to vent about it. Some letters made me feel better because they showed me I wasn't alone in feeling that those who won the grammys were not the most suitable of the canidates (which is my own private opinion, not anything else), and others made me feel better because sometimes it'[s just fun seeing people get all worked up about things they can't change, esp if you were worked up about those same things a short while ago. The dress letters caught me a bit of guard, because I really didn't notice the dress. In fact, even when I tryed to see what everybody was talking about, in the three or so reruns they had in Israel, I couldn't see what the fuss was about. It got me a bit mad, feeling out-of-touch, which is a feeling very easily acquired from a distance of a 1000 miles or so. Still, I read some of the posts on the issue, tryed to reply to some, and generally tryed to give my two cents, by which "fashion don't mean anything..." and then, after five months during which I've been proud to call myself an EDA, out comes this post, making the widest generalizations possible, blaming me, as it does any other EDA, of imposing my ego on others' for the cause of pleasure, of being biggoted on a visual basis, and of not being sensitive. Well, I'm terribly sorry, but I am sensitive, and that hurts! I haven't been on the list that long a time, at least when compared to some other people (and I won't name anyone, because the list is too long, and I don't want to overlook anyone), but still I've managed to keep in touch with a handful of the greatest people in the world, people I would have no fear in trusting my life on their integrity, people who are without a doubt angels in more then one way. Sure, some have put others down at times, or have made generalizations, or judged by outward appearence. But they have always apologized for it later. And they didn't apologize because they felt they had to maintain a public image, but rather because they felt bad about having said something that might hurt someone. We may not be perfect, but we are doing all we can to save our souls. So Piper, please, don't judge these people by what they may say, esp when they are hurting, or when they are mad, but rather judge them by what's in their hearts. 42, Michael Reggev aka Tuff - TIE PS guys, sorry for the lenght.
