Subject: heap o' NJC I just spent lots of time and finally caught up on digests. Whew. I don't want to step into the mud of many of the recent threads. Sean Hooks, as always, has plenty of great points. Unfortunately, he has this addiction to sticking his foot in his mouth every now and again. That's OK, Sean, we love you. :) Just play nice, everyone. All the time. Not just on the list. Not just at Jewel concerts. But, play nice every single second of your lives. Soooo many of people's problems could be simplified, if not resolved, if they'd just be nicer to each other. I try to live by that philosophy, and I can't say that it's failed me too often. Well, anyway. I've finally succumbed to the internal pressure; I love this poem too much to keep myself from sharing it. I've received many good comments on it, and I want to hear what everyone thinks. I'm looking at publishing it, and others. BTW, constructive criticism helps me much more than, "I liked it." Thanx. tim "dusty memories" The sun flashed off the oncoming cars, and my father cursed under his breath as the glare blinded him. The same sun caused me to stay sheltered in my shaded corner, as it heated up the back seat of our Buick to temperatures dangerous to the sensitive skin of an eight-year-old boy. I curled up in my safe haven and read my action comics. The incessant dust of the gravel road ground in my teeth, but I didn't mind. In fact, I cherished every moment of these trips to my grandparents' farm. Sixty-seven years of pipe tobacco and overalls, hog-raising and rowcropping, he lifted me into his lap with callused hands like tanned leather. He was weathered by continuous exposure to the midwestern sun. When he moved his bones creaked like the rafters of the dusty old barn or the hinges of his rusty old Packard. "All old things creak," I reasoned, "When I'm old I'll creak too." I decided proudly to start trying to creak; to get a head start on things. My father made a remark about the heat and the sun, but my grandpa just shook his head in his calm way, and looked to me. He said, "Don't pay him no attention, boy. He knows as well as I do that it's IOWA weather. IOWA heat, and IOWA sunshine. That means it's just right for us. Your father seems to have forgotten that since he left, but don't you forget." And I didn't. The dusty wind blew the curtains, and they're still frozen that way in my mind. The sunshine broke through the dusty window pane and glinted from the wire frames of his spectacles and the smooth pate of his head. "Your grandmother shines it with polish, like she shines her tables," he said in jest. But I believed him. Because he was Grandpa. My grandpa loved life, and I loved him. He would set a cup of lard on the old kerosene furnace every night before bed so it'd melt and he could drink it in the morning as he headed out for chores: before dawn, EVERY morning. He did that for twenty-eight more years after that summer. But he stopped one day. Everything stopped that day. Grandpa didn't come back for lunch, so my aunt looked out the window, to see where he was. She saw the great orange Allis-Chalmers out in the beans, still as the rider upon it. She recorded the image dutifully, and recounts it to me today. Her tears beaded up in the dusty furrows but they weren't solely tears of sorrow. For she couldn't help but notice the serene beauty of the scene. My grandfather wore a smile as kind and wide as the mighty Mississippi, she swears. He knew his time had arrived, and he received it with the pride that he had worn like a medal all his life. Even the dust in the air stood still; reverent to him in his final moment. I wonder sometimes if he still drinks a cup of hot lard every morning and goes to the fields, in his other place. I wonder if he misses the dusty Iowa sunshine. - --Tim Gavin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 22:18:08 -0800 (PST) From: Terrill Chalmers Subject: lizstock? what is lizstock? i know what jewelstock is, but what's the other thing? - -TSC ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 04 Mar 1997 01:14:34 -0500 From: Fred Norris Subject: Charlie Rose / Beacon show 3/3 Hey fellow EDAs, It is now 1:05am EST and I just got home from the Beacon show about a 1/2 hour ago to learn that I missed the Charlie Rose show. However, for all you NY area viewers, Charlie Rose is repeated tomorrow (3/4) afternoon at 1:30pm. The show at the Beacon was awesome....the crowd was very well-behaved in my opinion. I was expecting the worst based on reviews of the first night at the Beacon...luckily, most of the jerks stayed away. Having been my first time seeing Jewel, I must say she is a very humble person. She seems in awe of the praise and attention she is getting, commenting during the show how she still can't believe that she sees her videos on MTV in between the other talented artists, even calling herself a geek. (so all the nonsense about success going to her head can go right out the window). The Beacon is a great place to see a show because the acoustics are great. Jewel sounded phenominal. Even though she said her voice wasn't up to par, I thought she did a tremendous job. If anyone taped this show, I'd love a copy, especially being my first show. I think she played for about an hour and 35 minutes...did anyone get the setlist complete? The new song (or songs) was/were really great. She reminds me a little bit of early Melissa Etheridge....real compassion for her music. I could see her covering Melissa's song "Precious Pain". I think Jewel is destined for a great career.....hopefully the music business won't change her. Tonight was much much better at the Beacon, heres why from beginning to end. She came out for the duet with Rugburns on "Old Lover's House" Then before her show there was an announcement made about how tonight no moving around or entering/leaving the thetre during songs would be permitted. Jewel was pretty much very happy all night and the patrons though they were far far from perfect, compared to last night they were angelic. This show was so much better, Im glad my seats were 6th row tonite not last night. Anyway, sexist and other asinine comments were unheard of pretty much although there was still way to much screaming during songs, but at least it never obscured the songs like it did yesterday. Heres the setlist, longer, this was 1:35 as compared to like 1:05 last night, but the songs were quite similar and she didnt play a lot of unreleased faves like Carnivore, Love Me Just..., Nicotine Love, Sometimes it be..., etc. Near You Always: I could actually here the acapella part tonight. Stranger: 2nd performance ever, cant say I'm amazed with this one, reminds me a bit of Absence of Fear Morning Song: Eh, better than last night, accentuatedly sensual singing of the Im gonna give you some more line Little Sister: Pretty much same Don't: Moved up in the set, good call. Foolish Games: Voice being in pain/larangitis hurts her on this one but it was still very good. You Were Meant For Me:With Steve, from closer up I still couldnt see this magical chemistry I have seen posted about this song, but Jewel seemed to be into it, walking towards the front of the sage a lot. Run Tonto Run: Same Deep Water: Story preceeding it includes the Denny's women tonight, liked it Fragile Flame: No rudeness this time, lots of quiet, very nice Pieces of You: Here's where the reg. set ended last night but not tonight, good job Jewel Cold Song: Cute, as always. Tiny Love Spaces: Very nice, emotional, this is one of her best soft songs Angel Standing By: Same as last night but moved out of the encores. Reg set ends here, enc 1 is same as last night but... Who Will Save Your Soul: This got great reaction because Jewel had built up to it with previous good performance, unlike last night where it seemed like a token, fans flooded the aisle and smiles abounded during this song, Jewel fed off it, the positive vibe, as equally as she did from the neg. last night Amen: Better, voice wasnt as struggling as it did last night, some of the anger was back. Good job again, but this an be a truly killer song when her voice is 100 percent. This ends Encore 1 I'm Sensitive: Would've liked to see a non-album choice, but I dont think her voice could have handled Nicotine love or Carnivore Tonight. Sweet, very Chime Bells: Forced and she cut it quite short, editing the last two verses and only yodelling once, but it was a reward for the theares good behavior. And it ended. All in all, not a classic but decent, whatI would have loved to see for two nights instead of just one. And tonight I was there alone, last night I had two girls with me who had never seen jewel live, oh well. And thanks to Jason for the ticket, hope you found Grand Central. Also met Crunch, Katherine and Superdeformed, EDAs are actually pretty nice, thought I saw Selena but she was upstairs, hope your daughter enjoyed it if that was you I saw, Selena. There were lots of parents with smaller children tonight, especially daughters. I dunno what it was, there were just less assholes and screaming teeny bopper chicks tonight. From the start you just had the feeling that people were in a better mood and there to see a concert, to hear music, to experience, not just to atend an event, to have something to do. Thats about all I guess. Popularity is still bad, I still think Jewel is a folk singer whose hands are best manifested playing her blue guitar in smaller more, intimate venues and on non Z100/MTV formats. But tonight I was happy after the show as opposed to confused, self-alienated and depressed like it was last night. Way to come back strong Jewel, but tonight just prooves howimportant an audience is to the great performers, 'cause they feed off it. When she looked up it was into his eyes, not at the camera or off into space. It was a personal communication between Jewel Kilcher and Charlie Rose. This is what she is all about. I really believe that she strives to sing to each of us individually. And if we participate, then a personal conversation between her soul and ours will occur. The first comment is that the Beacon Theatre is BEAUTIFUL. My friend Sue and I both have never seen a theatre like it. In fact, there was a short interview with Jewel on Z-100 today recorded after the show and they asked her how the concert went and she said "it was a beautiful theatre" then she sort of alluded to the loud, drunken crowd being difficult but I didn't catch it completely. I disagree with Sean about the audience only being exuberant for WWSYS and YWMFM. I felt they were cheering for anything and everything, the most incomprehensible to me being when she took a sip of water. Yes, they cheered for that. From way up in the sky, I didn't think the Rugburns were that great (compared to reports from the other shows). To me, they seemed kind of tense but Thirza was right up front and reported that they were having a great time. I guess perspective is everything! The crowd seemed to really like them, which was good. Except the big guy behind me who kept yelling out "go home" and "get off the stage". I told him to shut up twice (I know, not angellic but it was so noisy I don't even think he heard me). Luckily he was moved to another seat. I was really disappointed that Jewel didn't join them at all. I guess she was trying to save her voice. I think I was kind of out of sync the whole night. First, while everyone below was apparently meeting the Rugburns, I was in line for the bathroom. Then, as was already reported, when we crashed the Z-100 party, I was left outside with Jared and Thirza. Jared did a great snow job but unfortunately it didn't get us very far. Well, she walked right by us on her way in and out and she smiled and waved. I had my camera but didn't want to flash it in her face. I figured she'd had enough for one day. Anyway, I hope she was in better health and better spirits tonight. Great seeing and meeting all you guys! Larry and Tegan - I never got to say goodbye. Jewel loved the idea & I gave her the tapes & a little note to > accompany them. (So.. soon the immortal words "God Damn Ye Harris Brothers" > will likely be ringing through the White House!!!) :-) Heh heh. Okay, here's the plan. Now, we know Chelsea is already a Jewel fan. If she goes to a concert and listens to Jewelstock tapes, she will obviosuly become as obsessed as we all are. It's inevitable. Chelsea will of course become an EDA. It's inevitable. After a few weeks on the list she will of course fall in love with all of us, and decide that she would like to meet some of us. Or all of us. ChelseaStock will be the obvious result. Being the First Daughter, she will of course have the necessary resources to fly in ALL the EDAs, and of course Jewel as well. There will be the biggest EDA gathering of all time. During the party, Igor will, of course, become stifled by all the energetic young people, and go off to seek the company of someone closer to his own age. Mr.Clinton will be his obvious choice. Igor and the president will get into a discussion of the relationship between music and politics, and Bill will be astounded by the incredible, Jewel-inspired deals Igor has, and will offer him the vice-presidency. There will of course be a small problem, due to the fact that in usual practice the vice-presidnet is elected, but I'm sure once the rest of the government meets Igor they will be dazzled by his sheer brilliance and remarklable wit, and make a few little constitutional ammendments. And the public will be just as impressed with Igor as we all are. It's inevitable. Now comes the tricky part. We will have to employ the services of the EDA's own team of deadly terrorists, the Harris Bros.(tm), to "assassinate", the president. Obviously, we won't actually kill him. That would be very un-EDA-like. The Harris Bros.(tm) will just make it look that way, and take the former-president off to a desert island somewhere (This will also be an excellent opportunity to test the desert island-cd theory. We'll tell him he can only take 3 cd's and see which ones he take. He'll probably cheat and take them all.) After the nation has time to recover form the "death" of the "presidnet", Igor will of course take over. And, with his Jewel-influenced policies, the United States will enter into a Golden Age of peace, harmony, and Jewel concerts. Of couse, the shouting of "YODEL" during a concert will become a criminal offence, punishable by up to twelve months with Bill on the desert island listening to the saxaphone music he will most likely take. Anyone who would dare to even whisper the words "Take it off" at a concert will be put at the mercy of Sean Hooks. I don't recommend it. :-) Seeing the superb job of running the US Igor has done, other countries will of couse follow the US's lead and choose other EDAs to run things there. There will be frantic bidding wars (I call Selena for Canada!!! There's a scarry thought. Selena running a country! :-)) Soon the entire world will be run by EDAs. Eventually, of course, eveyone will be EDAs......It's inevitable. - --Shaun P.S. But then if ppl make fun of it or say you look bad in it all the excitement and happiness just drains away. :-( Even though Jewel is a public figure it is still unsensitive and unangelic to do that -- to take away someone's happiness and scar their kindred spirit -- so I hope Jewel got many compliments on her beautiful Grammy gown and had a fun night! Peace and cheers ... o< o< o< o< o< ... Everyone have a *sensitive* day today and think of one good thing you are lucky to have in your life: you! I heard about the problems at the 3/2 show, and I have to say they were handled much more proficiently by the management this time. Jewel did have a sore throat, but she kicked some serious ass!!! The show was FAN-FUCKIN-TASTIC! I had tears in my eyes for some songs. Jewel really did a knock-out job on YWMFM, and she yodeled(if a bit hoarsely). The rugburns did pretty good too, and were received warmly by the crowd. One more time....the show was awesome! Now I'm going to bed. You could all bunk up at my house for the week (free of charge) including food and 2 bathrooms. Please let me know ... it would be so much fun and sanctuary to be with such a postive group of kindred spirits and every day angels! :-) John-Eric :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 1997 16:13:05 +0400 From: "Little Miss Neeti" Subject: Make way for the Sexbomb... Selena running a country! :-) Well...at least the public trasnportation system would be good. There'd be plenty of vans rented and ready to go. And it would definitely be the first country with ocean to ocean carpeting. Grab yer toolbelts!! YEAH!! And I could make all the rules! ooooh... power sure can be heady! And Amy and Rachel would be in charge of forcing everybody to be happy! And horn blowing would be illegal! And it would be illegal to think of Jewel in a sexual way irregardless of WHAT she wears.. or doesnt wear! :) And Crunch could be in charge of all the clothing optional cities! And Pat Brown will be the only judge we need.. to settle squabbles and such.. Dennis.. hmmm.. what sort of title shall we give him? oooh.. Dan Stark will be in charge of all the radio stations in the country. And we will force everybody to listen! And if Amy and Rachel suspect that they arent liking listening, then we will strip em naked and give em to Crunch! And everybody will have to be nice to everybody else. We will ban extended leaf tables because they are very dangerous. And we will make it illegal for anybody to name their kids Tom anymore. We will retire the name and build a hall of fame and honor all previous Tom's. So.. Shaun, this isnt TOO scary yet is it? Lizstock will be a legal holiday! Yeah! Broomball a national sport! Any more ideas of cool rules to make?
