It was an incredible experience for me...even though the way the audience acted was a complete disappointment...but i'll get to that a little later on... ok well lets start at the time we arrived at the beacon. I had bought an EDA poster from Larry (i'll pay you back, thanks) and was holding it in the lobby...a girl came up to me (she was college age maybe) and asked if i was with the list and i said yes she said that she used to be on the list but had to leave for some reason, we didnt go into details...so we were talking and i mentioned it being my first concert...and she couldnt believe it...she asked how old i was..i told her 14 and she said "No way" you look much older (i dont really) so i was like "um...okay sure" anyways....We were out in the Lobby for a good half hour and i was walking around..and there must have been 50 people who stopped me and made me explain what the heck an EDA is (thanks a lot larry!) and most people thought it was very cool...and some people didnt understand....Anyways ON WITH THE CONCERT!!! Okay....concert time....*lights go down* Steve walks on stage looking VERY hot with liquer bottle in hand (the bottle was no so hot...) ...stinky looked drunk...but people say he ALWAYS looks like that...and John was looking good...hes like Dave navarro (Steve made a comment on this later in the show) well i really dont remember set lists very well...but i believe they started with Lockjaw and they were so amazing...They are much much better in concert than they ever will be on CD. you have to actually see them dancing around and stinky doing his rooster impresssion....um...after a few songs Steve announced "I'm Steve Poltz..The skinny heroin addict looking guy from jewels video...This is Stinky in drums...and this is John over here...hes the child of prince and Dave navarro, And together we are the Rugburns!" (pretty accurate quote) okay well they were great...They played Impala of my love...With no jewel sadly...it was a cute little doo-op kinda song. They seemed to be having a blast on stage (the exact opposite of jewel) Steve was smiling SO wide...and no...stinky didnt drum on steves crotch but Steve did lie down on the floor and stinky drummed steves shoes. They were dancing around and ultimatly having an awesome time (even though steve took a drink from his liquer bottle every few songs..) Okay...they sang for about 40 minutes...did maybe 6-8 songs...then there was like a 30 minutes intermission. well we went scowering the halls for signs of a rugburn (we KNEW jewel wouldnt be out there) and didnt find any...but we did find one guy who claims to have flown out from California just to see stinky. well i went back inside to see the other EDAs and Jared informed me that Lenedra and BiBi were sitting right next to us!!! they were one isle away! it was so cool...so we offered Bibi and lenedra some of bryan and katherines Oreo cookies...Bibi took some and lenedra declined...saying that she doesnt like chocolate...and ways i was ultimatly shy...So jared was so nice enough to help me out and ask if she would sign my EDA poster...she did...shes really pretty. so okay....JEWEL CONCERT STARTS... (it gets bad here...really bad...i feel so sorry for her) Part 2 to come ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 11:22:23 -0500 (EST) From: Grrly1@aol.com Subject: Beacon 2/3 my first concert (part 2 of 2) Part 2 of 2 Okay*lights down* <2,000 screaming fans> jewel came on and started to sing Near you always Accaplella...and the audience was so rude...they didnt respect jewel at all...i felt so bad for her...) anyways jewel finished the song and asked _very_ nicley far everyone to please be quiet...she had a sore throaght and was taking cough drops in between songs...Again no one cared. I dont think anyone there...besides EDAs were actually there because they loved jewels music...It was sick...well i really cant remember jewels set list...but i know it was short...too short. The third song she played was Morning song...and when she got to the part about "hanry miller and anais nin" i just broke out and cried...It just popped into my head that.. "hey jewel is RIGHT in front of me...I'm actually sitting in the same room as jewel" and it was so overwhelming that i just couldnt help but cry....but then it angered me that this audience has absolutely no idea what they are watching...Their were a bunch of drunk idiots yelling at jewel in the middle of a song...The younger people were screaming _everytime_ jewel moved or did something cute...jewel couldnt even tell one simple story with out having to scream to be heard...but thankfully there was not even one request for "Yodel!!!" ...but she didnt yodel at all...and i really wanted her too...but i would never yell it out. Well she sang a new song called "stranger" which was absolutely increuble...and then she sang Fragole flame i believe...and heres where it turns really ugly. At the end of the song some guy yells out "Take it of jewel" ...and as soon as he said that i knew the concert was over... i could tell that it hurt her...She was up there on stage with a sore throaght and she was doing her best to give US a good show no matter if it cost her a voice...and this total jerk completely disrespects her and tells her to take her clothes off... i mean i would have probably ignored it and passed him off as a drunk idiot (i'm sure he was both) but Jewel takes alot of things too personally...I mean i'm sure the guy was so drunk he had no idea what he was doing to her...so she Starts singing pieces of you...but the first line was "Stupid boy stupid boy..stops me in the middle of a concert to say 'take it off jewel' stupid boy..." well this ot a huge laugh and i thought that she was over it...well i wasnt expexting her to walk off stage after that song.... She looked really mad...and i couldnt beleive that a stupid guy had ruined it for us...now i have to wonder if (not including the encores) if the show would have been longer...and i think it would have...but i was just so completely surprised at the lack of respect the audience showed her tonight. i mean if she has to put up with this every night i really do feel sorry for her. and when she did come out for the encores she did an great version of WWSYS...and then something else...but i think she did Amen for the last song...and the audience hadnt quieted down in the least bit until now when they were starting to calm down....sadly ut was her last song and i think they pretty much already ruined jewels mood...so it was over...jewel seemed mighty pissed. so...after it was over i was feeling kinda happy that i got to see jewel, and kinda mad about what happened...so we went into the lobby and had pretty much given up hope for the evening...thats when i saw a huge crowed of girls surrounding John castro...so i went over to him (i practicly had to wait in line!) and asked him to sign my EDA poster...he did...hes cute... he signed it "John castro, the rugburn of love" and then after about 5 more minutes we spotted steve, Walked over to him....and had him sign my Poster...he seemed pretty happy to see the EDAs at the show. anyways...after that we went out side...I bought a few extra t-shorts...because i was freezing to death (when i was done i was wearing a grand total of 4 shirts, and i had one in my backpack) So we then followed the crowed of teenagers in back of the theater...where there was a limo waiting...but there was no way jewel could get though that crowd so they pulled away (and picked her up around the corner i bet) anyways...we found out where the Z100 party in jewels honor was being held so we all walked over there, and it was a very fancy club (18+) and since well none of us had Passes we were kinda scared...but Some people pusshed there way through...but then the guy stopped jared me and Amy and wanted to see if we were on the Guest list (well obviuosly we werent) and jared told him that Bibi would let us in (problem was Bibi never showed up) so The guy at the door let us come in from the cold...so we sat by the window...and waited for bibi...still no show. then the guy told us we had to go back outside and wait...so at that time jewel decided to leave...So we were outside and out comes jewel...she didnt look too happy (she had a bad night, remember) so when she walked by me (she was 3 ft from me!!!!) i lifted the EDA poster and she looked at me and SMILED right at me!!! so this is like so totally amazing for me...because she was like not happy and tehn as soon as she saw the banner she smiled...this really made my night. i'm still smiling/crying/laughing/pondering ... The concert was bad...and i am sorry that THIS experience had to be my forstr...but i ma even more sorry for jewel..she looked so hurt when that guy yelled at her...shes pouring her heart out to us in all of her songs and an insensitive creep cant keep his mouth shut for 5 minutes... but i'm floating on air because SHE SMILED AT ME!!!! my first concert.... The satisfied majority are usually content to let the trouble-makers blow off their steam and hopefully go on their way. =) Remember that at the concerts, there are just a few people yelling and a great many wishing they would be quiet. So, kindly ask the inconsiderate to be considerate. Nobody wants to be an asshole, some just don't realize that they are. Those that do want to be are just trying to be accepted in the only way they know how. So, be assertive, but nice. =) This list is like those concerts. There are a few disgruntled souls making a stink about this and that. Realize that they are a minority. The happy are quiet and satisfied, letting those obnoxious few blow off steam and be rude. Understand that it is their way off feeling loved. Lashing back at them supports their delusion that this is proper behavior. But by speaking to them kindly and considerately, they can see that there is other ways to get attention and be loved. A SOLUTION: =) So, lets POST HAPPY!! Have you noticed the news? I never watch the news. It is 90% BAD stuff. It rarely reports on good thing that happen in society, only crime, tragedy, and materialism. Our list has become much the the same. Only the grumbling is being posted. I want to encourage everyone, all 900 of us, to post HAPPY things. Post about things that made your day, kind things you saw others do, a kind thing you did, a kind thing that someone did for you, a gift you recieved or gave, some thing incredibly good, ... in other words Every Day Angel things!! =) At Lizstock, someone mentioned just this. That we should all post to the list EDA acts that we see happen in the world around us. Not only will this raise optimism on the list but it will give each of us ideas and incentive to do those things ourselves. Posts will manifest action! By doing little things everyday such as saying hi to a stranger, or going out of your way to aid someone, you ca make a little difference in the world around you. Be an EDA example for those that know you and those that don't! And all this can start here, on the list, by looking at what we post and saying, is this positive, is this EDA material, is this truly something an EDA would say??? =) Stop for a minute. Take a look at the world around you. Are there EDA things happening around you?? Look closer, they are there, you just have to learn how to find them!! =) Then, tell us about them! So, by your experience we can learn how to be more angelic ourselves! =) Lets turn the list into a positive place, not a grumbling session! =) Be an Angel Every Day!! =) Crunch ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 13:55:32 -0500 (EST) From: BillYeh@aol.com Subject: VH-1 Duets Repeat For those of you who haven't seen it yet, VH-1 will replay their "Duets - Melissa Etheridge & Guests," with Jewel on Saturday, March 8, 9:30pm-10:30pm EST. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 13:58:21 -0500 (EST) From: GCove76082@aol.com Subject: Toronto show To all toronto based EDA's, I was wondering if there were any of you going to the Toronto show on Mar 6/97. I told another person on here that I would never post again, but, I kind of need to get this off of my chest to someone. Guess what? I just found out that my girlfriend is in love with two other guys, and she didn't tell any of us. She told me today. I love her very much. I'm hurt by it, though. I didn't judge her for it, I just told her that I kind of figured it was true, because of the way she'd talk about the one guy that was her friend, and that I wasn't angry. I cried already, though. Kinda hard not to. I told her that which ever one of us she picks, I'll be happy for her. God, I'm so damn sad. Brendan There are as many opportunities as the stars in the sky, but you only get a handful of them. Why do you think that is? It's because no one knows where they are. Are you going to let an opportunity that you can see pass by you? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 16:49:02 -0500 (EST) From: VCavallo@aol.com Subject: Re: Beacon 3/2 - gathering - show - z100 after party - drunk at station... I had to get it out, even if it is negative. Brendan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Mar 1997 13:59:55 -0800 From: John-Eric Subject: Spring is on its way! :D Good afternnon angels! I'm betting the it is ABCD (All Of The Above), whic goes like this: It's not A, do I love you It's not B, do I love to hold you It's not C, do I care for you It's just D, all of the above That's it. I think she wrote it when she was in grade school. And she does sing it from time to time. Since I can't make it, was wondering if someone could possibly buy me a shirt, write me back and we'll figure out the plans. Also I just finshed updating my concert tapes page (http://www.vt.edu:10021/R/rleigh/bootleg.html) so if anyone wants to trade or just get copies of what I have write me. Ok, I just finished reading a great book called SwanSong written by Robert. R. McCammon. It's a fictional story of how the U.S. go to war with the Russians (it was written in 1987 so there was still a little friction between the two), and it causes WWIII and wipes out almost all the people in the world except for a few chosen one's. One being a young girl named Sue WANda, who has the gift of life within her and she is the one to lead the rest of the people to a new better life. Now it's not all luvy duvy because there are evils searching to destroy Swan and her follower's and... if you want to know the rest you'll have to read it. Now to my point, after reading this book I realized that this character is almost identicle to Jewel herself and I love this character, she's awsome. She's a bright angel of light who gives the message of hope and goodness. I hope one of you guys or gals read it, I think it's worth the time because it's about 960 pages. Gian.C. "Watch for her! they said. Follow her, if you like, as many hundreds of others do, because the young woman called Swan has the power of life in her, and she's waking up the earth!" Robert R. McCammon (Swan Song) "At the top of the World of the Being is the greatest Form of all, The Good!" Plato. "Those who know right, will act rightly" Socrates. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 18:01:22 -0500 (EST) From: K8tMae@aol.com Subject: jewel on aol tonight Hey all, I haven't posted in a looooong time, but I just thought that I'd drop in and say hello. I was in looking at the cybertalk/cyberwhatever screen a few minutes ago and it said that Jewel would be on "tonight" at 8 pm. I saw that she is scheduled for the emptyvee cyberrap thing on the 10th too, do I'm not sure. You all might already know that she's on tonight, so sorry if this has already been covered. Hope that everyone is doing ok. I don't think that I"ve posted in about 7 months or so. I have no idea what you all have been talking about...looks like you all did another 'stock thing, and it seems that talk about the dress is running amuck. Much ado about Jewel as usual. Too bad the album won't be out til '98. :( Take care all! Those EDAs who have actually been at the recent shows will know the dynamic and maybe I'm talking nonsense but I've got to believe that all of us can, in our own way, help Jewel right now. There's EDAs at every show, and while the idea of EDAs as bouncers has some fantasy appeal it's more likely to turn shows into slug-fests. But a few words, not fists, well-placed could help neutralize the negative vibe and disrespectful yelling. I mean, her dad Atz can't be at every show to teach the yahoos manners, so it's up to the EDAs to back up and support Jewel. Take the Ghandi approach -- saying "shut up" or "f off" may only raise the testosterone level and create more tension. I don't know. Maybe that's some meaningful words that will put the yahoos in their place and at the same time be a message to Jewel that the forces are with her in a positive way. Again, whatever you all think will be the answer. Politeness, respect etc. can neutralize the opposite feelings, so "Please, let Jewel sing" or "Give Jewel peace" at appropriate moments might be better things to say. And there's much better things, I'm sure that the EDAs can collectively think up... And who knows how it might work until it's tried out at one show, then two shows... I read a quote on one of the sites of Jewel about not being afraid to make mistakes and realizing that there are none (mistakes). Anything tried with a good heart can't be worse than letting the white noise grind away at the sounds of her soul. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #149 ***************************
