On every table is a card that says something to the effect that while a performer is on the stage, there is to be no talking in the crowd. The nicest thing is that this is rarely policed by the employees of the Birchmere--it's policed by the fans in the crowd. I went to two Dar shows there a few weeks ago, and you can hear every little bit of the show. It really is awesome, and the performers seem to enjoy it as well. The rule doesn't apply to banter between the artist and crowd, it's just done in a more subdued fashion. Anyway, I realize that this won't happen with Jewel shows-- there are two many two song fans in the audience to respect her like that. Just my .02. I'm an avid chart watcher and can't remember another instance of this happening ever before in the past (although I'm sure it may have, I'm just not aware of it having happened.) Billboard used to have a rule that airplay points from a single and its b-side were added together to help the charting of the single. When this was the case, having foolish games as a single would have still helped YWMFM to stay in the charts and would have made the original single rank higher than any newly released single (if that makes sense.) Billboard just changed that rule though, so Foolish Games won't even be eligible to chart as a single (when a single is released) until its airplay points surpass those of YWMFM (since FG is a b-side.) This is all very confusing I'm sure, but that's because releasing a b-side as single in its own right is a very odd thing to be doing. Any word yet on the new single being recorded or video filmed yet? I would assume that the company would want it out this month for airplay on VH1 but maybe not...again, Atlantic seems to be doing everything their own way in this specific situation. Any specific info on the issue would be appreciated! I've been trying to tell everyone that I'm crazy but no one would believe me. Only crazy people know how to have fun. Now I can have some fun and let you know what I think about the Grammys. You are all nuts! Why is everyone so mad that Jewel lost. No one lost. Let me repeat, NO ONE LOST! Everyone that was nominated was a winner. This wasn't a horse race. No matter who won the award, there would never be a clear winner. Music isn't about winners and losers. Every song feels different to each of us. The same song will feel different at different times and places. If POY was played at a dance club, I wouldn't be happy. If I was holding Kathy in my arms YWMFM may feel right. Not only have I listened to LeAnn Rimes, but I own the CD. Let me tell you how this happened. One of my favorite singers is Patsy Cline. Even Jewel says she likes Patsy. I have been known to torture my family by playing her music over and over on long trips. But I'm fair and will let other music get played after every third play of Patsy. My son Erik hates when I play her. He is like a lot of you that say they hate country and western music. One day as he was listening to his favorite station waiting for the next play of R.E.M, they played Blue. He heard it and thought that it sounded like Patsy Cline. The next day he went and bought it for me as a gift. I love him for being so thoughtful. Boy does Blue sound like a Patsy Cline song. As much as I would like to say the CD is great, I can only find one other song that I liked. That song has special meaning for me because it is a duet with Eddy Arnold. I first heard one of his songs 40 years ago. Many of you reported that you loved Patty Griffin's cover of "Crazy" when she sang it at JS. Well then, you might like other CW songs as well. A Grateful Dead fan once told me he didn't like country. What the heck did he think the roots of the Dead are. When I was young I hated country. But then I heard Bob Dylan sing "Lay Lady Lay,(Lay Across My Big Brass Bed)." It was during my honeymoon. Instead of asking a hotel clerk if they had a room, I would first ask if they had a brass bed. Now I listen first to the music not what category it falls in. Some of my favorite albums are hard to put in a category. Pierre Henry - Theme from a Sigh and a Door. It is music made completely using squeeky doors. Then there is Marcel Marseau. He does pantomime. Yes, the vinyl album is silent on both sides. Does anyone want a tape of it? When they released the You Were Meant For Me single, I believe it looked as though this was going to be the last single for Pieces of You, with an almost complete studio album to be released around April (ouch, sorry to remind everybody of that.) Everybody knows that Foolish Games is one of Jewel's strongest songs, so I think they decided to put what would have been her third single as a B-Side to the second single to garner more support for Pieces of You. Now, recently Pieces of You is doing phenomenally well after two years of release, so they decided to hold off on the new album and release a remixed version of Foolish Games for the third single. My question is that Jewel is the only artist I know that has like a million songs, she would be the perfect artist to actually release B-Sides since she has so many of them. Of course, I guess that's why she says she has us EDA's, to boot them and talk about them so that they won't die. I expect there to be MUCH discussion amongst listmembers so I'll give a few highlights: Heckler ejected from the balcony at 9:45 PM Revamped Lyrics to POY; i.e. "Stupid boy...." Jewel paraphrasing her "Hands Manifest Thought" as "Hands Do What We Are Thinking" was clocked in at 10:07 PM, or approximately one hour and seven minutes into the concert. A concert which lasted until 10:15 after only 1 hour and 15 minutes onstage. What I thought was a mediocre set by The Rugburns. Enjoyed the cello addition immensely, too bad the concert was too short. Wondering if this concert will be reviewed by the papers. Wondering if tomorrow's concert will be 1. affected, or 2. as interesting. Mike Gonzalez speedygo@mindspring.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 00:01:04 -0500 From: "Terrence R. The only thing open 24 hours is Wal-Mart. We have no Waffle Houses nor Huddle Houses. So when I get bored, I head to the Wal-Mart Supercenter to see lots of very nice people (this is a college town). JC: I head to the electronics section and start checking the music. I notice these custom-printed posters of Grammy nominees and INSTANTLY start looking for one for Jewel WHICH I DID NOT FIND!!! (I'm so mad) Anyways, I turn a corner, and come face to face with a black markerboard which lists all the Grammy Nominees in all categories. They have this funky-flourescent yellow star drawn next to the winners in each category. And guess what? JEWEL had a star and LEANN RIMES DIDN'T!!!! I chuckled aloud and turned another corner, finding another sign which said: "Manager's Pick of the Week: Pieces of You Jewel " Again I was amazed, and what's EVEN better: Every POY CD, Cassette, and all singles were completely gone, meaning we have even more people hearing (in my opinion) some of the world's best music WHICH MAKES ME VERY HAPPY!!!! Sorry. I'm just too enthusiastic.... see everyone later... BTW, everytime I look into our Chat area, I find no one.... I get SO LONELY!!! bye - Terrence R. Well, YWMFM has climbed and climbed, perhaps still is. After the success of YWMFM, they now figure it's worth holding off the next album to put Foolish Games out. I remember with Alanis, there was a lot of time in between "Hand In My Pocket" and "You Learn" compared to the time between all the other singles. - Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 03 Mar 1997 00:27:08 -0500 (EST) From: Sean Hooks Subject: Beacon 3/2 review Date: 02-Mar-1997 11:58pm EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: Beacon 3/2 review This is the show that absolutely and undeniably prooved me right. Jewel's popularity is killing her, absoultely killing her. Tonight's Jewel show was barely over an hour long, yes, you heard me right, barely over an hour. Rugburns come out and do 40 minutes and impress me. No duet with Jewel at end like I've heard. She comes out to do "Near You Always" starting acapella and you couldn't even hear her. Teenage girls mostly screaming at high pitch, tone, and volume, drowned her out, as they would all night. Yes all night. People screamed and yelled not during breaks but in the middle of songs. The disrespect level tonight at the Beacon was some of the worst I have ever seen at a concert, and I've seen my share. Well, more on that later, here's the setlist, it may not be perfect but is pretty accurate. Near You Always: Sounded good when I could hear it over the screaming. After the song she makes a brief statement that people should be quiet and the doors to the lobbies shut, these requests were not respected in the least all night. Stranger: New song she says, played with the cellist, liked it didn tlove it. Morning Song: Typical performance, I think it is here where she emminated the most humor as she joked about the grammies and how she was in a category with Celine Dion and Toni Braxton and did funny imitations of them about how pop star-ish they are, Celine with her theatrics and wailing and Toni with her sexuality and overwrough singing Little Sister: Again, typical performance Foolish Games: Good version, but by the end it was notable that her voice couldn't go for the kill on some notes You Were Meant For Me: Expected more from Steve, but it was cute nonetheless seeing that I dont really like this song much Run Tonto Run: Not bad, interesting to hear it with instrumentation Deep Water: Again, good, but she couldn't hammer the lines about our pride and health etc like she usually does Don't: Murmuring through the whole song, people trying to sing along, she started out seeming to really want to put a lot into this one but ended regularly, nothing special, seemed disconcerted by the lack of quiet Fragile Flame: Here's when it gets nasty, bad really. During the suicide intro guys are yelling shit and she gets pissed and says something sarcastic about how intelligent it is to scream out during quiet moments. All the Animals: Now, this is absolutely one of my least fave Jewel songs, I really just dislike it. But as the song winds to a close, some asshole yells out "Take it Off!" I was up in loge and even from their her body language was a gesture of such shrugging and complete disgust that I felt really bad for her, she was dying up there, she was an event not a musician that most of the audience culd care less about anymore. For a second or two I really truly thought she was gonna walk off stage. Instead in a true gesture of bravery and fight and heart, she didnt. Pieces of You: But her response wasn't the angry one I expected, a song like Race-Car Driver or God's Gift to Women done right here or her flipping the guy off might have come on a different night, but tonight she did POY starting with "He's a stupid boy, he's a stupid boy," and then loud cheers from a lot of people, she was saying something about him yelling "Take it Off" and calling him a jerk, and then saying do you hate him cause he's pieces of you, she ended the song with that same line. This ended the regular set. Who Will Save Your Soul: Very low key, her voice struggling, she managed to hold the note at the end somehow Amen: Finally people shut the fuck up but it was too late. She dedicated it to someone who dies from heroine, the performance was touching but lacked the complete and utterly loud anger that usually typifies the song's climactic lyrics about the angels, the golden ones, the hope, and the children. This ends encore one Angel Standing By: Expected this to be song one of two or three last songs. It wasn't. She made a brief apology about how she could only do high notes so she'd have to end with this. It was perhaps the best effort of the night and this is not a fave of mine either. Overall, disappointment. Took two friends who had never seen Jewel before and they said they could tell that she would be so much better in a smaller venue, you really can't comprehend how rude, loud, annoying, and disrespectful people were tonight. I've seen Jewel in bars and there she starts with "Behind the Wall" and yeah its loud at first but once people realize she's singing fucking acapella they have a little human decency and keep it down and let her perform the slow and quiet songs the rest of the night. Hell, she got more respect at MSG I think, where people werent even there to see her. I am so disgusted with the patrons of the show that I was seriously considering not going back tomorrow. Jewel, please see this as the result of you becoming too popular. People there knew the album material only and cheered exuberantly only for WWSYS and YWMFM and a litte for Foolish Games and they called for I'm Sensitive a lot. I guess my rant ends here but I just felt so hurt for Jewel, it couldn't have been the least bit rewarding and seemed both emotionally and physically painful for her. Shes played a bunch of nights in a row now, maybe she should reschedule tomorrow's show to let herself heal. God, sometimes I just lose all confidence in human beings. It usually helps to listen to Jewel, to make me feel better, to see the inherent goodness and beauty in life through her music. At the end of her show tonight before Angel Standing By she reaffirmed her believe in angels and said that people are generally pretty good. For once, and it scares me to say this, Jewel may be wrong. She is the minority now. I keep thinking of the movie Se7en and two quotes from it. The first is about my Jewel experience tonight and how it made me think about the duality of good and bad in our world. "Ernest Hemmingway once said that the world is a fine place, and worth fighting for. I agree with the second part." That is exactly how I feel. I also feel that, in response to me using the subject header "Jewel is a slut", this is my rational, if you read my message you'll know I love, respect, and cherish Jewel's music and do not think she is a slut. But it did it to assure that people would read it. "These days if you want to get someone's attention you can't just tap them on the shoulder anymore. You have to use a sledgehammer." Lastly, I am going to the Beacon again tomorrow assuming the show is still on and it cant be much worse then it was tonight, maybe it was cause I was in Loge, my seats tomorrow are on the floor. I am going alone though so if anyone out there would be kind enough to say hi, I'll be in Row B seat 103 and looking for fellow EDAs to respectfully enjoy a show with. And to anyone who has seen other shows on this tour, please tell me that the other shows have not been like this, the reviews havent indicated it. Hopefully you'd be enraged if they were. Just the fact that they were all at least an hour and a half hints that they were better though, and the presence of her at full voice and the ability to do songs that require strong vocals like Daddy, Nicotine Love, Carnivore, etc. I am drained.
