I was checking my mail over my normal cup or seventeen of coffee this morning and I came across yet another message about the dress Jewel was wearing at the Grammies. I remember as I was watching the after Grammy show on VH1 I was wondering to myself. "Have we really Digressed so far that the only thing we can worry about is what who is wearing...gee I thought all that ended after high school." It seemed that every person they would talk to they would ask about there clothing, and even when they weren't talking to someone they where discussing what Sting was wearing ... or Oh don't you think Toni Braxton was lovely in that dress. To be honest I found the entire thing halarious. Then I log on and check my mail expecting the flood of "Are the Damn Judges Blind or just Stupid" messages that I got, but along with them I get yet another round of who was wearing what. Well it got me thinking...and I came to a few conclusions that you might be interested in. Firstly it occured to me that VH1 got a large amout of money from several of the groups who provided the clothes for thoose who attended the Grammies so natchurally they are required to mention it over and over again . As for the rest I have a few points to bring up. Firstly I assume most of you have had enough clothes to go around right? I mean on the whole I bet just about all of you have never had to worry about wearing the same thing twice in a row. Not that that is a bad thing I am just pointing it out. Also I would assume that most of you are in the Middle Class bracket, so therefore while you have had some nice clothes you really haven't had some REALLY nice clothes correct? So just ask yourself, this is your night in the sun so to speak. You are going to be surrounded by the creme de la creme of the musical and media society not to mention a few hundred screaming fans, what to do? Now imagine that someone is giveing you (not selling you but GIVEING you) a lovely outfit from one of the top designers. An outfit you have never been able to wear before. You tell me you wouldn't jump at the oppurtunity. Some of us (myself included) have never even owned a suit much less a Tux. I can tell you for nothing that if I where in the above mentioned scenario I would jump at the chance and I would WANT someone to dress me since I have no fashion taste. Think about that for a second or six. Remember, an Angel she may be, but Jewel is also a Human. Several groups (Blues Traveller comes to mind) open with the song everybody's yelling for at the time; it sort of defuses the idiots who only came to see one song. Instead of posting each one, I thought I would just make one (sort of) long message with everything. 1. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a web page that all of us 900+ angels could post personal profiles about ourselves? It seems like we get a lot of introductions from the newbies, so I think there is a definite interest in this. I often times wonder what the other EDAs are like, where they live, what they do, what their interests are, yadda, yadda, yadda. What do y'all think? [Please don't volunteer me for this. . . I am "HTML(ly) challenged.. . ;-) ] 2. In all those jpegs of Lizstock, were there any pics of Liz? I'm guessing she's the one in the tie-dye, but I'm not real sure. 3. Question: Why is it such a big deal if one can see another's nipple? [This is a rhetorical question. . . please don't respond.] 4. I hear that Gwen (No Doubt) is gaining weight because she is ill. I think it's something about her voice (pollups, maybe), and if that is the case, I'm sure she's under _lots_ of stress. If it is pollups, she could be staring the end of her career in the face, and I don't know about y'all, but that would *definitely* make me gain a bit of weight. 5. More complaints about Ticketmaster. They pulled out of Denton, Texas altogether. Now, there is _no where_ in this town to buy tickets. 6. Although I would not have chosen LeAnn, I am happy that a Texan got to join Lyle Lovett in winning a Grammie Wednesday night. What's more, LeAnn is a fellow "Dallasite," and we always try to support each other's music careers. Before she got so popular in the Country world, Dallas radio always referred to as the "Sweetheart of Dallas" or something like that. I really would have preferred JEWEL, or Garbage, but. . . Oh well. That's the way the cookie crumbles. Also, the guy who wrote blue (I forget his name, but he's from Fort Worth) is writing music for a friend of mine, so the more exposure, the better. I guess that's it. I'm off to Blockbuster to see if I can get tickets to the June 21st show. I wonder what it'll be like to see JEWEL with 300,000 of my closest friends? Hmmmmm. . . EveryDay Angel asked: >Subject: Taping a concert, info wanted!!!!!!! > >Hey Angels, > I have a question. What is the best way to tape a conert. I >went to the local eletronics store today and say two items in my price >range. The first was a SONY professional walkman for about $248.00 the >second was a Phillips DCC (digital compact cassette) Price was $278.00. DCC and Mini-disc were two competing digital formats released at the same time, sort of like Beta and VHS were when VCRs were invented. Both use a digital compression techniques to fit more audio onto the tape or disc. This reduces the quality compared to CD or DAT, but it's still better than a non-Dolby cassette. DAT, which was the original digital format, records all the digital bits without compression, which makes it the best choice for quality, but it's also the most expensive. Avoid the DCC at all costs. Minidisc won the DCC vs MD war when DCC's developer, Philips, officially discontinued the format a few months ago. While the remaining decks are being dumped cheap by retailers, just try to find a blank tape a few months from now! The quality of the Sony professional walkman is as good as a home deck, and it's the only walkman that has Dolby noise reduction for recording. But from what I recall it's not exactly small. You need something that you can discretely bury in your crotch to pass through security. This leaves you with the choice of going cheap, or spending lots of money and going really good. Aiwa makes some nice recording Walkmans, and I think their cheaper models sound about the same as their more expensive models...none of them have Dolby so you're going to have hiss. Just make sure you get one with the external lapel mic, so you can leave the recorder hidden during the show. Then there's Sony's D-8 DAT walkman. $600+ for the unit, another $200+ for mics that won't overload the D-8's bad mic pre-amp, so it's definitely not cheap but the quality is the best. The only middle ground worth considering right now might be mini-disc. The quality of a live show taped on Mini-disc is probably quite comparable to DAT. I really haven't priced or looked carefully at the units though, so I don't know how good a value they might be. Do the MD recorders come with mics that will work at a loud show? Are they small enough to sneak in? Are they that much cheaper than DAT to make them worth considering? I don't know, you'd have to look into these things. I do know the discs have less capacity than a DAT tape, so you'd have to change discs after little more than an hour. (DCC is even worse, you have to flip them like a cassette. DAT lasts 2 to 3 hours, even up to 6 hours with an acceptable sacrifice in quality, without a tape change.) And there currently aren't nearly as many MD traders as DAT traders, so you'd probably still be doing most of your trading on cassette, at least at the beginning. The reason I followed up is that I forgot to mention something VERY IMPORTANT to first-time tapers (and even for experienced tapers using new equipment): - --------------------------------------------------------------------- But first, a word from the legal department: Please do not construe this as advocating illegally bringing a recorder into places where it is not welcome (especially in New York). Get over the fear of walking past people with something they are looking for. Practice at home in front of your stereo with the lights out until you are comfortable enough to not make a scene. Then, if you can't get to a cheap club show a couple of times before the show you want to tape, go to a dollar show at a theater with a respectable sound system and a loud action movie playing. If it's a cassette or Minidisc, learn to QUIETLY switch media in your seat without looking at the deck while keeping the recorder tucked away. Learn what kind of sound levels your microphones can handle and what kind of placement results in the best recording. Place electric tape over switches you don't want to accidently bump. Just a few weeks ago, I made a rare public appearance at LizStock. When I got off the plane, I could see that the clothes I brought with me were wrong for the weather. Instead of palm trees and 76 degree weather, there was snow and it was in the twenties. Regardless of the weather, the bathing suit and Hawaiian shirt and no socks were to be my wardrobe. I stood outside surrounded by snow waiting to greet everyone that just arrived in the "party van". My shear short sleeve shirt was no protection from the cold. I could feel my nipples getting hard and erect. No one said, "look at Igor's nipples". Maybe no one noticed? Maybe no one cared? Maybe because I'm a male, it was OK? Later on, people started noticing my hair deprived legs. Someone asked if I was wearing pantyhose. Another person asked if I had shaved my legs. Everyone seemed to notice. everyone seemed to care. Is it because I am a male? I noticed that Crashboy included a picture on his web site of Tegan and I sharing a kiss. Tegan was opening her heart to me by telling me about some personal feelings. Suddenly as we looked into each others eyes, something special happened. She kissed me on the lips. It was a very nice kiss. It was filled with sincerity. It was a kiss that said thank you for listening, thank you for understanding. I was touched and gave her back a kiss. She stops and looks at me and kisses me again. Then she steps back and spits on the ground and wipes her mouth. Was it because I was a man? As I looked around the room, I noticed a lot of things about many of the women. I noticed Rachel's red on black hair and her endless smile. I noticed Shelly's height and her piercing beautiful eyes. I noticed Liz's braces and the warm glow that made her irresistibly squeezable. I noticed Selena's curly blonde hair and, well I'm afraid to say what else. I looked at all the women and noticed all the differences. But one thing they had in common was they all had breasts. Take my word on this. My advanced age has given me a wealth of experience to back this up. For you younger guys reading this let me just assure you that most women do have breast. They may hide them under clothing and support them with bras. They may only expose them to nurture a new born infant or during private moments of intimacy. But most women do have breast. So why is everyone so suprised that Jewel has breasts. I noticed the night of the Grammy's that she had a matching pair. Jewel and Lenedra noticed that not all women do. Many have been effected by breast cancer. Do you remember that they both sang on the Lifetime special that was about that horrible disease. Many women go through a lifetime of suffering even with breasts that are disease free. Their breasts are too small so they are ignored. Or their breasts are large and men don't look beyond them and see the person. The pressures society has put on women over breasts has caused many to endure needless surgery and fill their bodies with dangerous chemicals. I see nothing wrong with us talking about Jewels physical beauty. But lets not loss sight of why most of us love her. She has touched our hearts with words and music. My ears can't tell anything about her breasts and my heart can only feel her soul and passion. For whomever was wondering (can't remember), MiniDisc (MD) is down to 400 for the MZR3 Sony unit, although you can find them for as low as $250 if you hunt. I got a MZR2 refurb unit for $199, but would advise caution and an Extended Warranty for MD. Reliability is worse than DAT units. Mine has already been back for repair, and the repair cost would have exceeded the cost of the unit! (replacement laser, 2 servos, and something else, within 2 months of it having already been refurbished by the factory!) It's not like I've even had a chance to abuse the thing, either. This was just to get the thing to record blank MD media at ALL. If you want digital, get a DAT. If you get a chance at a D7, it's nearly the same as the D8, except the D8 allows you (I think) to set the SP sampling rate to 44.1 kHz instead of 48 kHz. The frequency response is the same, but recording at 44.1 means you don't need to convert the sample to record to CD. (Actually, the Tascam is probably better than the Sony, but it's nearly 2 thousand bucks and is much larger) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 15:35:13 -0600 From: rjk1@cs.wustl.edu (Bob Kollmeyer) Subject: Re: NJC: Re: Taping a concert... I'll let someone who has official contact to deal with this officially, but I can certainly spout history and experience. Time was when Jewel openly invited such taping, even speaking into the microphones of those doing it and requesting tapes for songs she'd forgotten. Times change. Record labels can bring influence to bear. Albums can be delayed further raising fears of record companies that material will be illegaly released. Sometimes the artist has to "officially" change their position, whether or not they are indifferent or even have strong feelings in favor of it. And Dan Stark writes: > The only middle ground worth considering right now might be mini-disc. > ... > I really haven't priced or looked carefully at the units though, so I > don't know how good a value they might be. Do the MD recorders come with > mics that will work at a loud show? Are they small enough to sneak in? Are > they that much cheaper than DAT to make them worth considering? I don't MD prices have come down (though not as dramatically as the media - Sony really started pushing it after Thanksgiving), and portable DAT prices have climbed a bit (its not as easy to find one for $600 as it used to be) but they are still closer to DAT range than Pro walkman range. Like Dan mentioned, AIWA makes a good compact analog recorder as well. > I do know the discs have less > capacity than a DAT tape, so you'd have to change discs after little more > than an hour. (DCC is even worse, you have to flip them like a cassette. Minidisc has a couple of things going against it. The length issue Dan mentioned is one. The BIGGEST problem (as of 6 months ago and I don't think this has changed - it is a designing nightmare) is that while they have a 10 second _playback_ buffer, they do not have a record buffer. Shake it while you are playing and you're okay. Bump it while recording and you've just lost data. Run it upside down, on its side, or shake a DAT all you want (with reason, obviously) and you won't hear a thing. bob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 16:44:56 -0500 (EST) From: Laura Tonn Subject: NJC my thoughts.. Hi all, After a trying weekend, I need to write somethings down. I know that most of you will forgive me for rambling on and I hope all of my fellow EDA's have had a better weekend then myself. Thanks, Laura Life is a constant struggle Feelings run rampid Our hearts give way to temptation Why are we easily led astray? If our souls were meant to be There is nothing to separate us This rope that connects us will not break It maybe strained and pulled It may fray but the thread still holds true Our eyes see Our heart feels Our ears listen Listen to a part of ourselves Once in a while a person comes along and steals our heart We hope they are everything we need Do we expect too much from people Do we say things we ought not Do we want to much. These questions I ask myself and wonder I wonder if their is someone for me I wonder why God forces me to wait. I wonder if "Mr. Right" will ever come He has to be more than a man But less than a God. His heart must love music And the gift to create it. My ears are open, My heart is too. I listen for a sign... and wait patiently. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 16:50:02 -0500 (EST) From: SIGNALSYYZ@aol.com Subject: RE: RAINBOW Hi any fans of Ritchie Blackmore`s Rainbow ? i seen them two weeks ago and Ritchie kicked ass....catch the tour if it comes to your area ,Ed ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 15:24:02 -0500 (EST) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Mr & Mrs BB's Surreal Adventures in Providence........ Hi everyone, Well, this is gonna be my longest post ever quite likely because the scene in Providence yesterday was so SURREAL that I want to get it all down before it all becomes a blur. AmyJo & I arrived at Alumni Hall at 11:00 in the morning & hung out on the Rugburns/Crew bus with an old friend Colin, who's Jewel's new monitor engineer for a little while (The Rugburns were asleep in the back). Shortly thereafter we hooked up with Larry & his kids Daniel & Nicole,Tegan Dennis Harris,Phil(the JS t-shirt guy) & we all chowed down at StickyFingers on a rib & brew extravaganza & enjoyed each others company for a while. After a great lunch, we all headed back to the venue. All the EDA's were able to get in (they each had thier own angles to accomplish this) & were treated to another amazing rehearsal of Jewel & The Rugburns. This was truly incredible & I'm sure others will post their thoughts & reactions to being able to witness some amazing new material & a few things literally being created & developed close up. This rehearsal lasted approximately 2 hours and featured the following material with Jewel: Improvisational Rap Jam Unsung In Your Eyes (a lost song only played on the Hutton show) Run Tonto Run "Black Dog" Jam (YES! The Led Zeppelin song) Adrian (this time almost 22 minutes long-similar to the New Haven rehearsals) Deep Water Comfortably Numb (another long lost gem from the Innerchange Days) Passin Time (a new one in progress-2 versions) Be Still My Little Heart (a new one in progress-2 versions) My Body Is Changing (3 versions-now performed during Rugburns set) Downtown Where The Vampires Go (another new one in progress-THIS KICKS ASS!) Then The Rugburns did soundcheck which featured: Rugburns jam (instrumental) Crispy (Baby Wont You Take Me Home?) The Great Mystery (a new Rugburns tune) There were a few incredible moments during all this & all the new stuff was incredibly good. This literally went on until 5 minutes before doors opened. After the rehearsal I met Atz Kilcher(Jewel's Dad) & he was in awe of the amazing scene surounding his daughter. He's incredibly friendly & I popped out to Jewel's bus where Chris Snyder was showing Atz some recent Jewel video footage. Later on we made arrangements to stay in touch & he gave me a tape of his recordings(haven't listened yet). He was as nice as can be & a pleasure to meet. (It was his last night & he was flying back to Homer today, where he's a music teacher.) I also spoke with Jewel briefly & told her that Mike Connell had informed me that Chelsea Clinton was planning on showing up at one of the Beacon shows. Mike suggested that I run off another set of Jewelstock Tapes so that Jewel could give Chelsea a set in NYC. (I did this & brought em with me.) Jewel loved the idea & I gave her the tapes & a little note to accompany them. (So.. soon the immortal words "God Damn Ye Harris Brothers" will likely be ringing through the White House!!!) :-) Alumni Hall opened doors & everyone naturally surrounded the stage (it was general admission) with all the EDAs in front center already. (They'll have to elaborate on some things, since I was back in the room watching from the board area) The Rugburns took the stage & it was obvious Steve was in a VERY bizzarre mood. (I must say now that I've met them all, The Rugburns are the sweetest, friendliest people in the business. I'll elaborate more on this following the show.)They were as crazy as ever & kicked into a set that was: Pile On The Hangover Lockjaw Providence Improvisation Song Tree Hugger Nows Not The Right Time For Love Me & Eddy Vedder Miss Wakin Up With You My Body Is Changing (with Jewel) Impalla Of My Love UPS My Heart Next Day To You Their set was totally crazed & at the end of "UPS" Steve took a giant leap off the stage into the audience! From my vantage point all I saw was a sea of heads with Steve's legs & feet sticking up! I'm sure those EDAs in front can elaborate on this since I suspect he landed on them! After a brief intermission, Jewel's set began with: Near You Always Morning Song Cold Song Circle Song(aka With You I'll Always Be) a definate surprise! Sometimes It Be That Way Race Car Driver Pieces Of You then amidst shouts of "yodel" & general rudeness from the college crowd Jewel brought out her celloist & percussionist and began: Foolish Games then The Rugburns joined in on: You Were Meant For Me Run Tonto Run Deep Water Silver Lining the crowd was really getting loud & Jewel attempted (unsuccessfully) to quiet things down by continuing with: Angel Standing By Daddy (no sh*t---we saw people BREAK DANCING on the gymnasium floor during this song!!--unbelievable....) Then Jewel went into a VERY intense version of: Nicotine Love At the conclusion of this song amidst rudeness & more "yodel" calls she finally lost it! I've never seen or heard her this pissed off before. She yelled at the crowd and said "I F*CKIN HATE IT when you yell "Yodel"!!! What are you thinking?? Go home!!" She also told the crowd they could learn a lot from the EDAs!! She was obviously upset & obliged by doing the "meanest, angriest version of Chime Bells you could imagine. She stopped about halfway through it & brought her Dad out on stage to join in & he had words for the audience too! Atz said "I'm from the biggest state & I came here to teach you folks from the smallest state a little ettiquette!! Don't be yelling requests in the middle of MY DAUGHTERS SONGS!!" You had to be there to fully appreciate the intensity level! They then continued in a yodeling duet which reprised into "Chime Bells" The encore was: Who Will Save Your Soul Amen This scene typified how weird things are getting these days. This show was incredible in its own way, but I can't stop feeling like way too many people attending Jewel's shows are totally missing the boat...... Well the EDAs hung out, & a few lucky ones witnessed even more incredible scenarios as the crew loaded out courtesy of Steve Poltz. A young (I'd say 8 or 9 years old) boy approached Steve & asked about the chord changes on YWMFM. Steve pulled out his guitar & taught the thoroughly absorbed boy the entire song with many of us gazing on in enjoyment. Meanwhile, John Castro was signing everything in sight & laughin it up with the EDAs hanging around. I'll let each tell these stories cause I saw some hilarious autographs.... We were all saying our goodbyes & Atz & Steve got together & did a hilarious impromtu duet based on Larry Greenfields wardrobe & the EDAs all had a great laugh to end a very long day. Atz joined me in the hallway & we re-iterated how we'll stay in touch, exchanged adresses & took a quick picture together. He promised to send us some smoked salmon from Alaska & we said "so long"..... AmyJo & I mozied to our car & packed up. Steve came up & said goodbye & walked away alone into the depths of the campus. About 10 minutes later we drove out of the lot & passed a small cemetary on the outskirts of the campus & there again was Steve. We jokingly said "Hey, need a lift?". He said "No I'm OK, but check out this cemetary. All the headstones are identical!" (which they were!) Something morbid, yet hilarious was said regarding cloning & identical headstones..... We said goodbye as Steve was climbing the fence into the cemetary & drove off into the very foggy night............
