Back here in Britain we are way behind on Jewel, they haven't even started playing WWSYS yet. The other night I was watching the Brit awards and I couldn't help but wonder if Jewel will be there next year ..... lets hope so! If you are interested the best international newcomer award was won by Robert Miles. (Previously held by Alanis Morrisette). Best international female solo artist went to Sheryl Crow. So there's no need to sulk, at least you guy's get to see her on TV! Back here no one has even heard of her (although I am trying to change that in my own little way). regards, Ketan (still eagerly awaiting UK tour dates!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 09:08:23 -0500 (EST) From: NAdlerX@aol.com Subject: NJC: her dress? ***WARNING***: if you have a short attention span and just want the point of this letter, skip to the section at the end marked with ***. Also, this friend of mine(female) has this really, well, i'm a guy, i can't explain it. i guess it's a theory (or something to that effect) about wearing things that are sheer, revealing, etc. The basic idea is, as long as it's in good taste, it doesn't matter what shows(to an extent, let's not get carried away here). So, she was wearing a dress that had a sheer top. Can anybody argue she doesn't have the body for it? Some people can wear clothes that others just wouldn't look good in. Anyone beg to differ? Can't catch any flames here, cause there's lots of clothes i'd like to wear, but they just don't look right on me. And in the end, what do the clothes really matter? Some places, folks are happy just to have a sheet or a rag to wrap around themselves. Should we really complain when our clothes don't require adjustment everytime we stand up to keep them on(although so females do come close to this category). I could ramble for hours, but if you are still reading, then you've been tortured enough by now. ***i think you should just wear what you like and what you're comfortable. Style is a relative word by definition. if Jewel felt like showing off, then by all means, she should do so. Read any fashion mag, they'll tell you(and it's true). When you wear something sexy, you feel sexy and by feeling sexy, you ARE sexy. Dress to suit your mood or the mood you want to be in. Maybe Jewel just wanted to drive 'em wild. God, i love a confident woman.*** Evan, --EDA needs work, too much spare time. An analogy is my love for Shakespeare; I've read every single play, I've seen most movie versions of them, but man oh man, I love seeing what Ken Branaugh is going to do next. His King Harry is the best, bar none, the St. Crispin's day speech was beyond anything I could have imagined. If I had to rely on the interpretation of company at the Globe that did it hundreds of years ago, all that beauty would be lost. Some people are just good singers. That's a big talent, really. Its a lot of expect everyone to write their own stuff, some people are moved simply by the beauty of singing of lending their interpretation to words and sounds. Not all great painters make their own paints. While it might be disappointing for Jewel not to win a Grammy, I think herself worth and our view of her worth is not dependant on winning awards, but by virtue of the beauty of her music and soul. Does anybody watch the music award shows to just hear the music? Each year I watch the performances, ALL of them, and channel surf while they are passing out the awards. I love music, and I love to see, hear, and feel it being presented especially when it's done with respect and passion. Example: I am not a personal fan of the Fugees by any means, but I loved their rendition of Bob Marley's tune. You can't sing music of this type without FEELING IT. Listening to it still moves me as if I were hearing it for the first time. Perhaps these shows wouldn't affect you so negatively if you tried watching them with this viewpoint. I know it made all the difference in the world for me, as I really began understanding the power and majesty of music so much more than in my younger years (And I'm only 28 so I have many years of great performances still to watch -- I hope). I hope that Jewel doesn't get discouraged - even things we try not to care about can get built up in our minds until they do become important. - -Jeffrey- - -- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- jeffm@genghis.com http://luna.genghis.com/jeff/index.htm - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 12:40:57 EST From: golden.mike@juno.com (michael geo fulcher) Subject: Facts Don't Confuse Me Leeann Rimes was disappointed herself when her first record only made it to number 3 on Billboard. More an likely Jewel was second in the voting and at the top of her music category. Leeann has been in music from about the same time as Jewel was and is in a country category which is beginning to lose favor and translates into the people who voted as losing their jobs. Jewel could easily be categorized elsewhere as a subset of country into folk and compete against the likes of THE BOSS. I think most people are attracted to Jewel the person which makes for the best fans and best survival in the music business.Nominations are enough to placate record companies especially since Jewel is not YET at the top of the charts and has a record ready to go when she does top out. Leeann without a lot of industry support did not have new product to put out when she succeeded and from her archives produced a second album that debuted at number one. Jewel is possibly able to achieve two number one albums in one year. My nephew who like NO Doubt and I were both disappointed that our favorite did not win but happily amazed that Leeann had such dedicated voters who voted in other categories for Nashville song writers and country flavored artists. for example "Change The World" Vince Gill who are loyal to roots music of their genre. Lyle Lovett and The Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute were also welcome awards for Texans. Jewel is positioned to continue her song writing and have it recorded and will probably be criticized for not writing enough although she seems to keep doing it nonstop so that she can change the world with her heart . I did not expect people to comment on Jewel's sheerness through three layers of fabric but those light s are very bright and could only enhance the natural beauty of which we should all be proud even when it comes to ourselves. Shania Twain had to suffer through too much for less exposure than a swimming suit in summer.Jewel simmers in sensuality which may be more threatening to those uncomfortable with our natural state. Your comments are very heartfelt and you deserve the expression of them even when they strain my juno software to the MAX. I have 446 messages for two days from 2 mailing lists one of which is about music but could only identify with the weird positions of Bruce Springsteins nomination. Okay guys, So Jewel didn't win at the Grammy's. So what. Is everyone missing the meaning of her songs and her life. She is not about competition. I agree with Dan. I am sure that she is not as upset as we are. Yes, we adore her and respect her but in doing so, we should understand that she is not about money or awards. Her talent is something that few understand and the few that do know that understand that Jewel's goals don't include winning awards. I am sure that she respects Leann Rimes as well. They both share a gift. Each express it in different forms. To us, Jewels lyrics and vocal abilities touch our hearts. Out of appreciation for Jewel and the reason she sings, we should not be angry that she didn't win. We should show continuing support for her and stop the anger. We all love Jewel so lets show her. First with the jewel content: Uh, why was she wearing that dress? I thought that the brown circle was a design on the dress, but then I realized it was her freaking nipple. Did she dress that way on purpose? And the dress was ugly to begin with... What the hell is JewelStalk? Are you guys serious? That's kinda weird. And what's with those long posts labeled Re: Sorry? It's probably not my business, but I just want to know. Okay, for the Grammy stuff: Why are you guys picking on that 2 year old, Leann Rimes? So you hate country or you think she hasn't suffered enough like jewel...the grammys is an award given to artists from their peers. it's not like they give a crap about what fans think. Besides, people who win the New Artist award tend to disappear shortly after.... And Toni Braxton definetly should have won over Jewel. Toni's got more influence in the music industry. Fugees are thanking God for teaching them to be humble? I usually don't curse, but can I say "BULLSHIT"? If they're so humble, then why did they like not play for charity events cause they didn't get special concessions, like getting bigger dressing rooms than the other bands on the ticket....? Hypocrisy in action. And when the smashing pumpkins were giving their thanks, D'arcy (the bassist chic) bent over to speak in the mic. All i have to say is, "please hon, stand back up...." I can't believe that Jewel didn't win any awards. There were very few things that highlighted. Elen Degeneras(degenerative) was about as funny as getting your arse stuck in a cactus. Most of the performances were very bad(the only one's I felt were good were the one's I'm byist towards.) I still can't believe the academy won't give the people who are genuinly good and write their own songs(like Jewel) grammies. I'm sure it's pretty political and I think it sucks. Instead of having people who everybody knows performe(like Celine Deion, No Doubt, and Smashing Pumpkins(the last two who I really like) they should have people who we don't know. I was very happy with the Riverdance and the other people(don't hate me for my neglegance) performances. They should have band who are non-mainstream or hardly mainstream doing this instead of bands who everybody see's every awards ceremony. If the industry wants to get any increase in record sales they should show us more bands and new bands so we can see whats out there other than what MTV will shows us. I just wish they would do whats good for us and not whats good for them. Mainly becasuse since there record sales are so bad then they might get the clue that they should change things. Sorry for venting but sometimes you just need to get it off your back. Also my good friend is interested in tickets to the Minneapolis concert. She's not deffinate but leaning towards it. So e-mail her at bert@bmtc.net She would be very appreciative. As for anyone who has recently e-mailed me I will not be able to respond for a while. I really screwed up my computer and I need time to get it fixed. So it will be a little while befor I get to check my mail. I can't say I'm too disappointed because Jewel did lose to Leeann Rymes who I don't think is that bad. How's this for a grammy wish:I'd like to see Paula Cole's "This Fire" up for album of the year. It's my favorite album right now and every track is a good one IMHO. Paula also needs her own good dose of fame right now heh.
