Geez, I would have liked to see Jewel win, but I don't think Rimes was a bad choice at all. In fact, the only act I would have minded to see win is No Doubt... and I even own two of their cd's. I just think they topped out with "Just a Girl" and the rest of their cd is lackluster compared to that delicious cut. Anyway, Rimes does have an amazing voice, and she has brought something to country music it hasn't had in a long time -- yearning. Of course, she doesn't compare to Jewel (she doesn't write her own songs nor does she play an instrument), but the Grammies could have done a whole lot worse than picking her in this category. And, they did do a whole lot worse tonight! Eric Clapton winning that many awards??? Tracy Chapman being shut out??? It's funny, tonight has been the first time I've ever had any respect for Dion. She really proved to me tonight she throws every inch of her soul into the song she sings. I haven't liked any of her material or songs in the past, but her performance tonight was rather breathtaking. By the way, why was she allowed to sing her current single rather than the song she was nominated for? This I thought was against the rules. - -- Mark A. The Chieftans won, Pete Seeger won, Bela Fleck won, good stuff like that. Elvis Costello was there, they did a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, talked about jazz greats like Mingus, and Jewel looked fabulous. So what if she didn't win? Well, I ACCIDENTLY did it. Lee Ann and Jewel were up for the same two awards: "Best New Artist" and "Yodel-Honey (tm) of the Year". Well, the word on the street was that Jewel had the inside track on the "Yodel-Honey (tm) of the Year" award, so the lesser "Best New Artist" award would be given to Lee Ann as a consolation prize. Knowing that Jewel is sick and tired of cretins begging her to yodel (whether they be Hawaiian classmates or New England drunks), I cleverly switched the envelopes, fully expecting Lee Ann to face many years of yodel freaks demanding she warble during her softest ballads. Unfortunately, I guess Lee Ann was already set to win the prized "Yodel-Honey (tm) of the Year" award, and Jewel was supposed to settle for the "Best New Artist" award (ya'll following this so far?)... The rest is history. Lee Ann won "Best New Artist" and Jewel got her award after the normal broadcast portion of the show. God, I hope they didn't ask her to do "Chime Bells" for an encore. I'm living my dream! -- JK). I had marked my calendar for Tara's Show tonight, her only stop in L.A. on her current sweep of rude bars in U.S. cities ("Hey, no moshing!" -- Tara to totally indifferent crowd.) I set the VCR for the Grampies ... er, GRAMMIES, that's it (I still don't know the results), and headed out to the Troub, figuring that there would be about 6 people there on a Wednesday night. Wrong-O. "Sold Out," said the security guard. Knowing that Hands do NOT manifest naught, I hung by the door anyway. Four minutes later, a nice lady comes to the door and asks if everyon has tickets for tonight. Me: "I don't, you have an extra?" She: "Yes, I have three tickets, but one of my friends can't make it." Me: "I'll buy it!" She sold it to me for the ten bux she paid. I asked her if there was a service charge; she said no, but that's really nice of you for asking. Already the evening was a success, just for that. I hung by the entrance and asked the gate guardian if Tara or her manager were there, because I wanted to say hi to her for Dan and ask her to play "Jericho." She said they would be back soon, and she called me out of the line when Bill, her accompanist/sweet backing vocalist, and roadie, came in. I told Bill I wanted to talk to Tara to deliver Dan's greetings, and I asked him if I could tape the show. He told me that she would be coming in soon; he said "I don't think so" to the tape request, so, "officially," I didn't get to tape the show. I didn't see Tara; the doors opened, the crowd rushed in, and I ran to the mezz above the non-mosh pit, to get a front row seat in what would have been a good taping spot, IF I had been allowed to tape it and IF she had come on stage with a little warning so I could have figured out how to get my dat-toy to record the whole first song. She was wonderful. A little bit of Jewel, with a dash of Sara MacLachlan (but not quite either one); a traditional heart-rending ballad troubadour folkie. Terrific vocal range and piercingly beautiful melodies and lyrics (her recording, I'm sorry to say, is lushly produced and sort of masks the talent she showed live, which Dan had already alerted us to). The crowd was indifferent (at best), and talked throughout her set. I was thinking she should do a Kilcher "shut up," but Tara was too nice and too timid to try that. If someone had been allowed to tape the show from an audience mike, the recording probably would have had a lot of talking that would downgrade the quality. When she announce all too soon that she would be doing her last song, I yelled for "Jericho"; with all the din, she didn't even hear me. After her set, I saw Bill again. I told him I wanted to talk to Tara, and he told me he had conveyed Dan's greetings, but that she would come out in about 15 minutes, if I wanted to wait and talk to her myself. Wrong-O. I stood through the whole Ashley Mac set waiting; no Tara. Feeling "Oh, well"-ish, I decided to go rip down the two nice little tour posters on the entrance doors and leave. The cd/t-shirt womon said "sure, take 'em, I'd just have to do it if you don't." I thanked her. She said I should hang around, 'cause Tara might come out soon. Wrong-O. I hung past the encores, until the place had nearly cleared. No Tara. When the tour bus rolled past the back exit, I went up to the guard, and in a last effort ("can I help you?"), I said I was looking for Tara. He said she's prolly up in the VIP lounge. Go on up! Whoa! What's up when the security is nicer than the crowd?? Short synopsis: I went upstairs and saw Tara just finishing a conversation with a cute guy in a crew cut (Kilcher -- Satellite; Poltz - -- Now's Not the Right Time for Love) wearing a Maple Leafs Jersey (hockey hoser, eh?). I introduced myself. I told her I came on Dan's recommendation, what a big fan he is, how he alerted the Jewel list to her, and how great he said it was to hear her perform live. I said I totally agreed, and that she was wonderful (I can still see the smile on her face). She told me how great and supportive Dan is, that he really makes her feel that what she does is not futile, and that she thinks HE's great. I told her Dan had asked me to request "Jericho"; she beamed and said that when he asked her to do that song, she got all flustered and practically forgot it. She told me to send HER regards to Dan. I can still feel the smile on MY face. I gave her a copy of my new Jewel/Rugburns compilation tape, which she seemed really pleased to get. (Gotta spread the gospel!) I told her she'd probably get a warmer and more attentive response in SD tomorrow. I asked her to sign my poster (she did, with a personal enscription -- using my silver sharpie which I just happened to have with me) and my CD insert (id.). I told her to check out McCabes before her next trip to L.A. (the bus leaves too early tomorrow); that's where she should perform. (The femme sitting next to her totally agreed with that.) I said I would alert the Jewel list to her SD show (strike ONE item off the "To Do" list). Tara's touring for five more weeks. You can get tour information by emailing or by visiting (at least that's what she said; I haven't tried yet). I went home happy. Well, not all of you. And well, not really poop heads. I can understand that your all mad that Jewel didn't win a little record player statue, but you all do know better right? I mean isn't it horribly obvious that Jewel is an excellent musician regardless of her award status? She would have gained very little by winning this award and nothing that she couldn't get later in her career. I really doubt your all that angry Jewel didn't win, you all know better. However I get a little jittery when I hear you all start to put down perfectly good people. There is absolutely nothing wrong with little LeAnne. She's a very talented singer/performer and from what I've seen a very sweet girl. I mean I've never heard of her ripping chicken heads off, and eating them so she can't be all bad. She's just a little girl, have a little respect for that. Could you do what she does every day. Did you? Like Clint said, "when I was fourteen, I had a paper route." Hurrah for good ol' LeAnne, people. Where are your freaking wings today? I should settle down though. I'm sure all of your intentions were good. Maybe I'm just being a poop head. Am I sad jewel lost? No. As far as I'm concerned Jewel didn't loose. The minute I listened to her CD I considered her a winner. Maybe not a Grammy winner, but like I said before, so freaking what. I'm just as thrilled for Jewel today as I was yesterday. I hope you all are too. Eh? :) Did I smile yet? It's important for me to smile here so this letter isn't taken with a completely dark background. :) -Bruce "I'm trying soo hard to limit the length of my messages!" bhartford3rd@juno.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 19:23:59 -0800 From: wrdavis@ite.net (Katherine Davis) Subject: JC: picture of Jewel from Grammy's My fellow Angels, There's a BEAUTIFUL picture of Jewel (and Fiona) on a Tori Amos site. rush to: http://www.aye.net/~mikewhy/toriamos.html and see it!! I had clicked the Grammy's off after the tiny-tot won over our beloved(yes, i can be a sore loser sometimes i guess) so all i ever got was a quick, distance view as she walked off the stage with everyone else. It was white, that's all i know. How was her hair looking? Some of the other artists looked like hell, so i'm hoping she was looking herself. I'm still in shock...i actually touched this woman's hand three nights ago. i know, i don't get out enough... And as for the New Haven show, i was very happy with my first experience with Jewel. Estatic would be a better word. The set list has already been posted, so, no, i won't tell you what she played. But she was wonderful, much better than i expected. I won't use space repeating to details others have said, just giving my opions at this time. i'll just have to remember to bring a pen next time.("can you, uh, sign m...m... oh hell, great show." j says, "Thanks, it was fun", i says, "will you be coming back here?", j says, "definately" and goes back inside as everyone gets pushed out of the stagehand's way.) And the Rugburns were really great to. It was my first time hearing them, as well as seeing them and i was impressed. i don't know if i would buy the album(don't worry, i probably will) but i would go see them live again, without a doubt. I would really like to see them do another tour with Jewel. They're very good performers and the chemistry of the Jewel/Rugburns combo makes for a really good show. Well, *i* liked it. Evan, the "everyday doesn't mean ALL 24 hours, does it?" angel ummmm, i've been sitting here awhile and i can't think of a quote, funny or otherwise, so even after reading my mindless banter, you shall go unrewarded. Better luck next time. Please play again. ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #134 ***************************
