Ok, I've keept from takeing up space with this for long enought, so I'm gonna say this and hopfull not have to say anymore about it (that is I PERSONALY don't wanna have to say more then this about it, you people fell free to) Ok, first off, if I remeber this right.. all of it started with someone asking if Jewel was a lesbian cus of some songs. This remindes me of once how someone asked if Jewel was a man hater for the same reason. I want eveyone to realize (if you don't already know) that Jewel rarely ever writes song in an auto-biographical way. She has said that "I'm sensitive" and "Nikos" where the only two songs she has writin about her own life. So don't listen to a song and think "wow, I guess that is how she is" (unless it is one of the above songs). Because unless she is lieing it's just not that way. Now, as for the "Jewel can't be gay cus she has dated/is dating a man" bit: she could still intersted in women for two reasons (one of wich has been brought up) 1) Bisexuality. I can talk about this from personal experiance. I have dated girls who like girls too. (and I'm gonna keep my sexualy preferances out of this if at all possiable) 2) little somthing called "denile". Some people don't wanna admitt that they could have even the SLIGHTIST bit of gayness in them even tho they do and so they continue to date the other sex. I just wanna go on recored here as saying that I am not suggesting that Jewel is either of these things, I'm just saying that it IS possiable. Now let me just put this on the block: say we find out that Jewel is a lesbian. Who cares!?!? That changes NOTHING. If she is then it's always been there (even if it might have been repressed) and so shouldn't have any influance over her music (and that SHOULD be why you are on this list, NOT because you wanna find out about her love life or because you think she is hot or whatever). The fact that this thread has gone for as long as it has is just amazing to me, I was thinking I would be able to get passed with without having to get all longwinded about it. But no, I'm forced to repeat answers and points becuase some people are repeating questions and counter-points. Just because she likes Melissa E's work and has done some work with her is not a clue that she is gay so don't get that in you head either. I for one will love Jewel and her work no matter what her sexualy preferances happen to be. I have a very close friend that happens to be a lesbian, I've seen her make-out with her girlfirend and it gave me the same felling as watching a girl and a guy make out dose. That of being a vouer. I've also seen two guys doing the same, and it was the same felling there. It's not a big deal people. The fact that even US of all people have to turn it into an issue is just weird. I just don't think it should an issue. I've seen the "Jewel's love life" thread get shoot down on this list a million times and wasn't at all sad to see that happen (not that I care seeing it go on either). Then somone indroduces the gay factor into the situation and everyone jumps for it. Are we really that bored at the moment? In closing I would just like to say that if Jewel chosses to lead a homosexual/bisexual life, then more power to her. May she be happy in whatever she does. And the same goes for her if she goes with the hetorosexual life. Let's just let people be who they are and be done with it. I think that everything that needs be said about this has been said (that is without us getting dirty about it, and we don't need that at all). Let it go people, it's over it's done... least as far as I can tell. BTW: this is in no way a stab at anyone that has commented on the subject. This is me saying my piece and that is all. Thank you all who took the time to read this all, and until I speak again... good lives to you all. - -Ashe Mayfair "Angels lookin' make it hard to cry" -Tracy Bonham My Jewel page at http://www.ponyexpress.net/~mayfair/index.htm ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 01:14:55 -0500 (EST) From: Gregory Willms Subject: Re: Folk Artists. And you would be right. EXCEPT that I was a very bright child. Very bright indeed, and one day after my poor three-legged dog Henry died saving a child from drowning, I had a vision. In this vision there was a beautiful golden haired angel singing the most beautiful song I had ever heard (or would ever hear, me being only three at the time). Well, over the years, I have forgotten what the song sounded like but still remember it's timeless beauty and para-earthly essence. What was that song, you ask? Yes, it was called Quiet Warrior. And since during this "dream", I could faintly hear my MOM in the background telling me to wake up, I have always connected the two. Now I know why. (Schmaltzy music plays). It's a poor man's Oh, I'm not saying that all of these artists' songs are folk, but each of them definitely have folk songs. Have you heard Suzanne Vega's first album? That is a folk album in every form, even with your definition. "The Queen and the Soldier" esp. Lisa Loeb's "Hurricane" and "Sandalwood" are folk songs, even by your definition. No, neither is a absolute _strict_ folk artist, but I would definitely call them folk artists (although in Vega's last two albums, that's reaching a little). Whether or not their songs are folk, all of them are based in folk. Just like Jewel. I also think such artists as Beck and Ani DiFranco are folk-based, although their album incorporate hip-hop to make the folk more accessible. I guess my point is the degree of folk content in music is different, but a lot of artists can still be considered folk artists IMO. - -- Mark Miazga Michigan State University miazgama@pilot.msu.edu East Lansing, MI USA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 01:43:03 -0500 (EST) From: Angel Subject: Re: NJC: Hypothetical EDA Gathering Sites > :-> Question: Does anybody know if this place still exists? You folks all start mentioning artists. This happened once before. Its a trick!! These are musicians whose names Ive never heard of! Like Ani, Leah, Patti, Penelope, Patty, Belly, Lisa, Fiona, Tara, Sarah, Cindy,Tori, Dar, Kate, Throwing Muses, etcetcetc.... They sing songs that Id not heard on the classic rock station that I used to listen to. Nor the station that plays music that "wont scare your boss at work".. So, I run out and buy all these cds. More than one from some of the artists! Not all at one time. But more music than I have bought in ages. The employees of the music store I go to are on a first name basis with me. They know I will be making them get out their book to see if so and so is available. So... STOP!!! DAN.. I have no ROOM on my cd rack for Tara!! And NO you guys! I WONT buy that country music cd!! And tapes!! I can fit no more tapes! Mike!! You have to either stop the trees, or buy me a tape rack! They fall off of my cd case.. dont fit right! I used to listen to Stevie Nicks every day! Now I have in my player.. lets see.. Ani, Tori, Counting Crows, oops.. I lied.. Stevie Nicks and Leah! The dessert island thread has you all mentioning artists I STILL have never heard of!! Tom Proven.. ferrchrissake !!!!.. we were supposed to be friends! You recommend stuff that isn't even available on CD! And sheeeeesh.. country singers now!! I will NEVER catch up to you all!! I have It _is_ him in the video, but its not him on the CD (even though he _is_ thanked in the credits; as is Alison Dyer). Drumming on the CD is still handled by Jim Shapiro (Nina's bro) who left the band (under friendly circumstances) sometime after their sessions in Hawaii but before the video shoot a month or two ago. There are bulletin boards, a chat room and documents related to her. Today, "Totally to Tori" is one of two featured venues on the Firefly Network. If you are a Tori fan you should definitely stop by and get involved! If you've never been to Firefly, go to http://www.firefly.com and set up an account (it's free). You should see the "Totally To Tori" venue link on the front page. If you don't, click on the Venues icon and you should find it there. Now if someone will propose a Jewel venue... Hey everyone, This is just a note for anyone who was wondering where/or when I was back around. I have a hundred(s) of personal emails to go through, not to mention the List mail, so bear with me if I'm slow in getting back up to speed. I also I have returned from a week of decadence and beyond in New Orleans. I've slept 9 hours since Sunday and just drove home for 11 hours...so....zzzzzzz...time to sleep. If you can handle the most overwhelming atmosphere of 22 hours a day of indulgence, bare skin and fun on the planet, I highly recommend it. This was my first time and I plan on being a regular now. Most important thing to plan for....a restroom. It's great to have a room near Bourbon street for close stumbling distance. Wow! That was something I hope everyone read (I say as a tear rols down my cheek). Here's something I never really tell people. In my 4th and 5th grade years I was one of those people that got teased and that everyone seemed to hate. The reasons were different, I was painfully shy, quiet, etc... When we got ready to move I asked a boy that sat next to me why everyone hated me and he said it was because I was so quiet and such a 'goody goody' . It still hurts to think of those couple of years, but in my next school I was probably one of the most popular in my class. That was grade school though. In junior high and high school I was somewhere in between. Funny, I ran into one of those guys years later and he had no idea who I was and sat there flirting with me until I reminded him of those days. He seemed very embarrassed then. Now I probably have a better life than a lot of those people, and I pity them. I've always been very considerate of the feelings of others. Maybe this type of thing helps one to grow to be a better person in some ways. I would never hurt another person like that. I can't believe I just told a couple hundred people that. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 09:14:35 -0800 From: Victor Igor Wasylczenko Subject: Please follow up Several people have gotten mail from Bill_Compagnone/CAM/Lotus@lotus.com. In a message dated 97-02-13 00:34:48 EST, you write: << But I do disagree with you saying that they were born with the "WRONG" gonads or whatnot... How can anyone say it's wrong? Maybe in many people's eyes it is, but I've always believed in different levels of sin and right and wrong... As in, I'm not into murdering small furry woodland creatures and barbecuing them, but some people are... Therefore it's wrong for me, but not for them... Wierd, I know... >> I had to respond to this, cause it's kinda what I believe too. I can never explain it right and can't remember what philosopher it came from (Rob would know), but I believe that something can only be done as a sin (for lack of a better word for it) if the person feels or knows it's wrong. This doesn't mean you can tell yourself something is ok that you know deep down is wrong, it has to be for real. For instance, someone who has a real problem understanding that hurting another person is wrong isn't "sinning" and they cannot be condemned for their behavior. They can be removed from society for the protection of society or whatever, but their souls cannot be condemned because they did not do it knowing it was wrong. I'm not very good at putting my thought into words, so if someone can say this better feel free. tlc ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 12:42:30 -0000 From: s181@redrose.net Subject: PARTY VAN!!
