If you are trying to play the guitar for a specific style like most people are, your absolutely right. I was using my own past experience learning guitar and wrongly assumed it was the most common path. I started to play the guitar as an therapeutic device. At first I had no desire to learn any specific style. My interest grew as I would make things up and hear similar things on the radio (well, kind of similar :-). Incidently I enjoy playing just about every kind of style you can think of because of that. Although I realize most people don't start playing for these reasons, I believe they might want to think about it. Ergo my public post. I do understand what your saying though. A basic knowledge can be better in directing you for future creativity. Only like I said, it would have to be a basic knowledge of the style you choose. When I first started playing the guitar I would sit and pluck individual strings till my hearts content. Gradually I would pluck them in a more melodic manor, and start to memorize my little songs. After a while I realized what I was playing (or trying to play) was very similar to classical guitar. I inevitable went out and tried to learn some Carcassi (sp?) and Bach transcriptions and fell in love with the whole classical world. Something I believe I never would have considered had I not have practice ignorantly at first. However, on another note, that would somewhat contradict my earlier statements, after a while I decided to learn basic guitar. Starting of course with chordual progressions. Learning basic progression and strumming patterns, I went with my previous attitude to make up my own little songs and see what I can do, rather that learn other people's songs first. I found that the style I was trying to play very closely resembled mariachi music. I went out and bought some Gypsy Kings and immediately fell in love. Again, something my own creativity lead me to. -Bruce bhartford3rd@juno.com On Wed, 12 Feb 1997 02:03:42 -0500 (EST) Gregory Willms writes: >well apparently you got me wrong on the point about not trying to write >your own music right away. i dont have a problem with it, but you have to >learn how to play the instrument first. what i was saying is that you >shouldnt just try to pick up a guitar one day and expect to write the >second stairway to heaven. Thank-you everyone who replied with tips for learning the guitar. The lessons I plan to take are in a classroom structure and I can't read music, so I definitely think this is the way for me to start. Plus I think it's very reasonable - 10 classes (1 per week) for an hour and a half each for a mere $50. And it's a way for me to get out of the house since I quit working (Wow! It's been almost a year since I quit!) and I need something other than house and kids. Besides, I think I'll really love it once I can at least play a little. Anyway, I still have to buy a guitar, so do any of you have suggestions of what to look for and what to avoid. I know I want an acoustic and steel strings, but other than that, I know VERY little. Thanks again. tlc ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Feb 1997 01:28:14 +0100 From: Alexander Stamou Subject: Re: NJC: Guitar Tips Bruce D Hartford III wrote: > to be a basic knowledge of the style you choose. Then I persuaded my mom to pay for private guitar lessons. Lessons are better than learning by yourself, because you still get to choose what you want to play and, to a certain degree, how you want to play it (if you get a good teacher that is). Or as Yngwie (Frank) Malmsteen says; you have to learn the rules before you break them. And you can still be creative on your own time, between lessons. It's not like prison. It does not prevent you from being creative. Of course, it is bloody expensive. I wonder if anyone understood any of this. I wonder if anyone cared. :) glisteningly,=20 Awful - --=20 =A7~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~=A7 | Alexander Stamou |=20 | Chalmers University of Technology | | Gothenburg, Sweden | =09 =A7~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~=A7 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 1997 19:34:04 -0500 (EST) From: Kiwi220@aol.com Subject: that desert island thing ok...this is probably really old, but I just read the threads from a couple days ago. Those albums are in no particular order after Poe. And of course, that entire list does exclude Jewel...she would obviously be my first choice. In fact, "Big Yellow Taxi" is a remix of a hit she had a few decades ago of the same name. That's just Joni and her guitar. Jewel does sound somewhat like Joni, and every female singer/songwriter owes their success in part to Joni Mitchell paving the way. She was one of the first. Joni Mitchell is one of my all time fave performers. Her "Miles of Aisles" CD would unquestionably be in my top 5 list of CDs. for the Friends CD, Joni remixed the classic folk song "Big Yellow Taxi" and the remix sounds nothing like the original song. if you listen to the original of Big Yellow Taxi or any of Joni's orignal songs, it would be quite easy to draw comparisons to Jewel. Thirza, you were totally on target to say that people change their sounds and styles for soundtracks. i think that Joni was just funnin' around when she remixed BYT. i suggest that anyone who likes the folkier side of things should give Joni a listen :) peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org "Innocence Maintained" is a moderated, news only email list providing its subscribers with timely information about Jewel Kilcher.
