With the new tour about to start, and all the plans and possibilities of EDA get-togethers, it's nice to know that many of us will get to "meet" the people we have come to know as friends on this list, as well as those who lurk and share our little stories. As I was telling EDA Jamie at the Rugburns show on Saturday, although we haven't spoken before, the EDAs have the same friends whom we've never met, and we immediately have lots of shared stories and experiences in common. I have been lucky to meet (and become "real" friends with) a number of us, and I get a thrill every time I get to talk to a real live EDA! It takes about zero seconds for that bond to become apparent. (Nobody else even understands the feelings we share on a daily basis.) This list is as special as Jewel. And that's saying alot. The first time that I ever saw Jewel was when she had done the Late show with Letterman for the first time, where she played WWSYS. I saw her, and I thought, "...my God, this woman is talented, beautiful, and wonderful..." (beautiful in every way, to hell with those that think otherwise...) I sat there for the whole time just staring at her listening to the song. I couldn't believe how long she was holding notes for, and how wonderful her voice sounded. I don't think that David Letterman or any talk show hosts appreciate what a wonder these people, people like Jewel, and others, are. I fell in love with Jewel and her music that day. Soon after, I bought her cd, and I haven't regretted it. I can't wait for the new album (sorry to remind you all of the delay). I would love to have the chance to play guitar with her, and just hang out with her, she's so cool! Anyway, that was my first Jewel experience, and then some. Later... I was at my grandparents house flipping through channels while they were talking to me. I couldn't turn the sound on since we were having a conversation but as I flipped channels I turned to VH1. The video for WWSYS was on. Even without being able to here her voice I was instantly awed. Everything was blanked out. Soon thereafter I was able to hear her the song and I was so amazed by how amazingly her talents blend together to speak straight from her soul. Her guitar playing was like nothing I had ever heard, her voice was so honest and pure. I instantly became a fan of this truly wonderful musician. I can only hope that some day I will be able to see her in concert because I fear that is most likely the only chance I'll have to see her in person. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 00:20:46 -0500 From: crunch Subject: NJC: Crunch's 3 !!! Maybe if we were surrounded in > beauty someday we would become what we see. But this is off the subject. Jill Sobule is one of the more underrated female alterna-pop singers around, in my opinion. I really like her eponynous cd. Full of funny songs (like "I Kissed a Girl" and "Karen by Night"), but also some really just-plain-beautiful songs, all of which contain a wit throughout. It's a really nice listen, and recommend it to anyone who wants to try a new artist. - -- Mark Miazga Michigan State University miazgama@pilot.msu.edu East Lansing, MI USA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 00:53:06 -0500 (EST) From: Grrly1@aol.com Subject: Top 3 CDs okay if i must narrow it down... 1) Rugburns-Taking the world by donkey (i'm shcoked no one has mentioned this!) 2)Refreshments-Fizzy Fuzzy Big and buzzy (dont let the name fool you...its a wonderful CD) 3)Jewel-Pieces of you (Everyone say this with me "DUH") okay...yes that was in order...jewel is only at the bottom because i dont like POY that much...i wouldmuch rather listen to a live show. and The rugburns are amazing and i love them. and i had to include the refreshments...their music is fresh and upbeat and VERY very very unique. i think it would be classified as Alternative...but its not really alternative in the Sense of the word that we use today to describe pretty much any young band. I dont think they have invented a catagori for the type of music that the refreshments play...its really very good...i suggest it highly. Let's see, I think I first heard her on some radio station, I'm not exactly sure which one, one of the ones here, in Las Vegas, and the first thing I remember thinking, is "wow who is this chick?" After that I subsquently saw our angel on this show, some type of morning talk show I'm not exactly sure which one, I think she played WWSYS. Then I started going to borders (the absoulte greatest store) just to listen to POY, untill I had saved up enough money to actually buy it, good thing too, because, I think they were about to swich the cd's just to get rid of me. I have this distinct memory of being in a movie thearer with my friends, and you know how they play music before the previews and showings (hey, we like to be early okay, well actually you could blame it on the ever so dependable city bus system) sor whatever, well they were plaing WWSYS, and I remember, that since we were the only ones in the theater, I got up and started dancing in the asiles. After that I saw her for the first time on Letterman (weird 'cause I never watch letterman either). This was all before she became really mainstream. The first time I heard YYMFM on the radio, was when I was at the optomestrist, getting my contacts, and I just sat there and screamed at my mom, "OMYGOD mom, mom, do you hear that, that's Jewel, mom their actually playing something besides WWSYS" my mom just kinda looked at me strange...Anyhow. Lets see here, want to here something really Ironic, my dad and I were at the Luxor buffet, and WWSYS was playing, and that was before it was really popular too. And then last week, we were at the Gold Coast, for bowling, and YYMFM was playing. Kinda weird, that a town Jewel supposedly opposes so much, is giving her so much airplay...oh well, it makes me happy, whatever. Well, that's all I can think of right now, gimme a break I'm tired--- Amber Grasmick p.s. did I ever tell you guys about the time when I called the radio station, and just waited for the dj to pick up, and then laughed at him/her...because before it was popular, they never played YWMFM when I requested it, and now they play it all the time ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 1997 15:03:40 -0800 From: wrdavis@ite.net (Katherine Davis) Subject: Desert island Hey ppl, I just wanted to make clear that *I* live on a desert island and I brought *all* of my cds!!
