Also of interest is Columbia U. linguistics Professor Deborah Tannen's "You Just Don't Understand," about the men/women difference in conversational style and content. In my experience, the world is balanced -- the species requires it for survival -- but by no means "equal." Men and women bear different burdens; we die on an average of 7 years before women. Still, I hear more anti-male remarks than anti-female; it seems that we're not supposed to be offended or affected. This discourse has gone on since biblical times, and we won't resolve it. I'm absolutely floored by Mr. BB's (another saint!) news about Jewel's videos. I can't imagine anything better for Jewel fans (besides spending a few days w/ Jewel personally, or listening to her everyday in concert), and I can barely wait. But I have a question to pose to y'all: Do you think Jewel will act naturally with the cameras rolling? You've heard of the principle where examinining atoms under a microscope is so difficult because the atom is affected by the microscope itself (electrons in an electron microscope alter an atom). Well, this applies to recording a subject in his/her natural environment using a camera (video or otherwise). As long as a person is aware of the video camera, he/she cannot act naturally, IMO. I've never seen anyone act the same in front of a camera as they do w/o it. Am I making any sense? :) My point is that while it'll be AMAZING to see Jewel going through the creative process, I'll always be wondering how much of it is an act and how much of it is how she naturally is. And don't think for one second that I'm saying Jewel is in any way fake -- everyone puts on an act in front of a camera, and most people put on an act just in front of other people. OK, enough rambling, Leo! Any thoughts, anyone? All that said, I'm EXTREMELY excited by the possibility of these videos! YESSS! A quick aside, for Larry: I'm sorry, but "TAPKAJ" (the artist presently known as Jewel) just doesn't have the same ring as "Jewel" does! :) The interesting thing is that TAPJAK is JAKPAT spelled backwards, which is pretty darn close to JACKPOT. And you definitely hit the JACKPOT that night! OK, I'm stretching it. :) Cheers, Leo tropical angel ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 23:44:08 +1000 From: Leo and Donna Babauta Subject: no real jc:deejays, veejays, and world records Hi Angels! Just when you're having a Jewely day, something sneaks up to you and ... POW! BAM! WHAP! Hemp-TV veejay Idallis (sp?) was introducing the YWMFM video and she started talking about Jewel's grammy nomination (I know you've seen this; we get MTV a week later way over here on little ol' Guam :). Idallis was talking about how much she loves Jewel and wishes her good luck. "Yes!" I shouted (in my head), "Everybody loves Jewel! Life is great!" Then driving to work, YWMFM comes on the radio. I'm on cloud 9, rising to studies in clouds #12. Life is great! Then the deejay, Jimmy Jams, starts talking about Jewel: "You know, now that Jewel's made millions of dollars on her hit album ... she can afford to get dental work on those crooked teeth!" Ouch! I fell through the clouds and hit earth. Did I overreact? Should I have taken it as it was intended, as a joke? Or was I right to be offended by this hired mouth making fun of my goddess? "Hey, Leo, maybe you should just lighten up!" :) I've read almost 500 of the 1,200 jewel-list messages I let build up for a couple weeks when I had to actually work and couldn't read my mail. If I make it through the 1,200 messages, would that be a record? Has anyone honestly topped that? I'm not going for fame here, just wondering if anyone has been through a similar experience. I'd just delete them all, but I couldn't bear to miss a WORD of what you guys say. Well, it comes down to how they went about it. Once you are in front of a camera that is stationary and unobtrusive for a while you forget it's there. I think if Jewel took enough time to get used to it, the videos will show pretty much how she really is. This reminds me of the disasterous Beatles project, which is a anatomy of how not to to this kind of thing. They rented a huge, cold warehouse in England and tried to record the process of making an album. The problem was that they change everything about the way they worked. The surrounding were uncomfortable, there were cameras, lights and crew everywhere.. They tried not to augue about things or get upset because they didn't want any dissent on film. Finally, it just didn't work and they gave up. Mike, Carrie, and Mike's friend Jeff are checking out ideas for gatherings. Talk amongst yourselves. St. Louis, March 21: Rev. Jim Schramm Todd Werner Trent Smith myself Rev. Jim is keeping an eye out for tix, we'll get back to you. Trent lives in CA, but will be here on break, so he needs help with tix. Rev. Jim or I or both will be driving from St. Louis to Kc. We're still open for suggestions for gatherings. Kansas City, March 22: Laura Capello Ashe Mayfair Rev. Jim Todd Werner myself Laura's really spearheading this operation. She says tix are $20 plus service charge, and rumors are they go on sale Fri, Feb 14 morning. She's not sure if she'll be able to camp out, and that might not be feasible anyway. If you want her to get your tix, send her the money ASAP (service charges are usually under $5) Western Union works well. Laura also seems pretty enthusiastic about hosting some gatherings, so talk to her. Moral of this Story: Talk to Laura. Anyone else intersted, please inform me and everyone else, we'll take all comers. All info is appreciated. See you there! whoever is organizing the other midwestern shows (Indianapolis, Detroit, Minneapolis, and all) please contact me so I know who to refer people to. tim gavin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 17:12:17 -0500 (EST) From: Russell Rivera Subject: Re: Sellout and New Album: JC or NJC? I posted earlier this week about how I thought Jewel was a sellout. Drake responded to my post personally as well as on the list (Digest #79). Here is my response to his e-mail, detailing my change in thought and my opinion on why some people may be thinking the way they are about her selling out. Russell Rebel without a clue It's interesting that you have sent me this because this afternoon I did a complete 180 on the sellout thing. Your letter has sent me further onto the other side. After reading Alan's posts 5 and 6, I decided that the album delay is not so bad. I find it interesting that Jewel has such vision to see her life in the performing arts as so long term. The fact that she has such vision is one thing that allows me to believe that she has sacrificed nothing. The video tapes that will be released also helped confirm this fact. Also, GraywolfLA's post about the House of Blues concert (don't know his real name off hand) and him telling us how personable she was also led me to change my views on the issue. I agree with much of what you have said. Jewel's music is poetry in motion and the music she writes and messages it sends should be heard by the world. The emotions which she portrays in her music, including using her voice as an instrument in order to show her emotions are what make Jewel so great. My initial belief that she was a sellout may have come more from the album delay and my anger at it. I hoped that she would be able to have some more control over this aspect as it is her music, and I hoped that she would want the world to hear it as soon as possible. We don't know what may have transpired in the discussion on the release of "Fritz Creek Store" between Jewel and Atlantic, and we probably never will. I just thought that she should have fought harder, and that if she were not a sellout, then she wouldn't have cared about selling more albums by the release of another single. I appreciate your response and encourage you to share it with others, as you may be able to convince many with your argument. I have a tiny little minute favor to ask. I am currently enrolled in a feminism class and I was just wondering if people could reply back to me about whether or not they feel women (wimmin) are equal to men. This is not for the class itself, I'm just wondering if the world is as anti-woman as the book makes it seem. I don't want to start some NJC thread and if I do I apologize for it right now. Thanks and Joy ~Candace (a.k.a. flicka) >> I've said it before and I'll say it again. YES, women are Equal. But, Men and Women will always be DIFFERENT. I Can't understand why people think that being equal means being the same. Here is a really bad analogy 2+3=5 and so does 4+1=5 they're different, but they're equal. I just think that people tend to think for women to be equal, they must be the same. Some people think that because I gave up my work to stay home and take care of house and children that I gave up my equality. Not so. I still feel equal because I don't let the attitude change.
