Well I picked up the Evita soundtrack (for $20.99 btw), but did for two reasons... and they whern't Madonna. Here are the reasons: 1) Andrew Lloyd Webber. I love Webbers musical (or at least what I've heard of them... I'm still kinda surprized by the fact that he did Cats..Ewwwww). 2) Antonio Banderas. I love Antonio's voice and his singing is wonderfull. I thought it was odd when I read a review for Evita and it said "Two surprizing things about this movie: Modonna can act and Antonio Banderas can sing". I already knew he could sing from the opening song of the movie Desperodo wich he sang with Los Lobos and his back up band. What I'm trying to say he is that there are many factors why this CD is selling so well. Madonna has a lot of fans, Andrew Lloyd Webber has a lot of fans. Put that together and you've got people that normaly wouldn't buy a CD with Modonna on it (me for one) buying it, and people that don't like musicalc (namly Modonna fans) buying it. That makes for a lot of people. Not to mention the hype of the movie and and the fact that it is good music (as long as you into that kinda thing, wich I am to a certian point). Some of them say " Oh I wish the best for her , I wish she reaches a lot of people out there" , but then the artist obtains this popularity and they feel somehow betrayed. They feel that because in them supporting her when she wasn't "popular" that makes them better fans , and that they are entittled to something more than just the recognition of being simply " a fan". I think a lot of people feel this type of jealousy , and deep down feel a little resented ... , but a true fan is the one that feels all these feelings ,but is able to enjoy the artist popularity and back her up all the way. People who like an artist but then back out when they see their fame rising are being egotistical , and there's no behavior more " un-fanly" that being hypocritical about their apprecation of an artist talent. Remember that we are fans of Jewel in respect to her music , poetry ,ect ;we shouldn't be concerned with external factors affecting her development ( unless it harms our favorite artists) , and we shouldn't be obsessing , and labelling Jewel because the turn-out of her life. We should support her , and always appreciate that for which we first turned into fans ... her music. Ouch, that's harsh. I still love Jewel's music. I really have not noticed her growing popularity since I don't listen to the radio and very rarely do I watch MTV or VH1. I mean, yes I know she's getting popular, but what's wrong with that. It's not like she started out on an indie label or anything. If she started out on a major label and considering her incredible talent it was pretty inevitable she would become popular. And also I know that this point has already been made, but it IS her JOB. Isn't it most people's goal to become successful in their job, especially one they love. And one more thing you can't keep great music to yourself. It is meant to be shared. (ever heard of a band called the Offspring ;) ) (oh and a band called Less Than Jake, if you haven't heard of them you will they just signed to Columbia.) 3.they leave their original fan base, thinking they're a big star they start playing huge arenas, not signing autographs and other assorted things. 4.they start writing songs that conform to label standards to sell records. The point is I don't remember Jewel doing any of the above. I must admit I would lose respect for her IF she did, but after hearing her AMA acceptance speech, oh and a little thing called Jewelstock, I don't think Jewel will ever be a sellout. I have heard of Emmylou Harris but by NO means is she a Big Star... Also who the heck is Joan Armantrading? I'd say for sure that jewel is already bigger than both those two... if not tracy chapman and sheryl crow as well... Sean also said: "And speaking of mainstream, Jewel should take the lead of Tori Amos, who recently invited Jewel to help out with RAINN, Tori's anti-abuse organization." Well, didn't jewel do a little spot on the broadcast of the concert. Of course we'd all love a duet or something but that doesn't happen very often. who knows? maybe when jewel has some time she could do this. only problem is that might make her more well known and since that is a sin it's better to just stay away from it. God forbid something jewel says or writes helps anyone! Sean, did you ever think that her being more popular would allow more people to hear her songs and lear from her. This is not to say she is a genius and we should all live like her but maybe some people would be better off being more like her. I would. "You don't hear Tori on the radio or see her videos on MTV, or even VH1, well not as much as Jewel anyway." well, that sure is true. I wish her videos were on more than one week after they came out. But in dance halls, and on radio stations she is getting pretty good airplay. Remember the album came out a year ago, and no new singles have been out for a while. "Tori's fans are therefore that much more loyal and devoted" Being a huge tori fan i guess i take that as a compliment... we ARE an Eccentric bunch. and she will have far less teeny boppers or people who only know one or two songs at her concerts-God I hate those people." Sadly tori concerts get LOADS of those people in addition to the rest of us... People who don't know what MAAG is about. But i must confess i've been to a Tribe Called Quest concert with friends. I don't know a Single song of theirs that is not on the radio... Am i a bad fan? no. But i also don't sit there and pretend that i'm the biggest fan, cause i'm not. It's people who say they are but really are jsut following along that piss me off, or teeny boppers who yell and scream. Not all of them do it but some do... as far as the spice girls go: "I think they're pretty good in the pop genre" GOOD, and that's all they are and if you like that kind of music listen to it and if you don't like it don't worry about it. What's next? GoodTimes 97? This is ridiculous for the end-user. First of all, in order to institute per-minute charges for Internet access, they will have to eliminate flat-rate phone lines althogether. This means you'll be charged per minute even for local calls if you're not already on a metered use plan. Let's look at it this way- per-minute local calls will price telephone service out of reach of a lot of people, and that will cost the telcos money. Others will simply eschew their extra data lines. That will cost the telcos money since they won't be able to sell more lines. There are some concerns for those of us who are Internet Service Providers, though. This could potentially raise the cost of T1 and T3 phone lines used for backbone connections, which would inflate the cost of Internet service. And content providers may have to pay more (lots more) for their ISDN connections. However, while these are issues that need to be addressed, I seriously doubt the Jewel list is the place for them. I mean, NJC is NJC, but these chain letters and conspiracy theories are starting to crop up too often. Please, for God's sake don't include a mailing list as the recipient of a forwarded mail unless it's at least somewhere within the list's charter. This list has a quite a bit of tolerance for tangents and runaway topics, but at least these develop within the list through the normal course of discussion. - -- Reverend Angus avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Feb 1997 17:55:06 -0600 (CST) From: Laura Capello Subject: Re: EDA midwestern tour '97 anyone going to kansas city needs to get in contact wif me. capello ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Feb 1997 19:12:57 -0500 (EST) From: asv@po.CWRU.edu (Amelia S. Since I used to run a BBS, I know how the phone company tries to squeeze every little penny out of everyone that they can. If they can differentiate customers, then they can successfully bill anyone whatever rate they want. THey charge business customers more. It's a fact. They try to make it look like they're not, but they are. Sometimes they even cut big deals to get customers, and *once in a while* they do cut a good deal where if the company does enough calls they actually save money. In any case, I've seen phone companies try and charge BBS sysops who run FREE BBS systems on phone lines charged more because they want to consider it a business. The trick is that when you get lines installed, to tell them it's for personal reasons. That is how us sysops kept getting residential rates. At this point the phone companies don't like seeing all these people on the internet with the potential of using their computers to talk over the phone lines for completely flat rates. This means that the phone companies are losing their business. The phone companies don't see any more of this money when someone makes a phone call over the internet. So the phone company figures if they can somehow get a bigger slice of the pie... You're right, this will reak havoc on the end user. But that's just on the end user trying to get internet access. Everyone who wants to call their grandma on the good old phones will be unaffected. Say bye bye to ISP's who provide dial-up service at flat-rates. Say bye bye to wonderful connections at low costs. We can just kiss it all goodbye once phone companies start doing this. On the other hand.. if ONE phone company doesn't conform, they'd get all the business. :) But then they couldn't handle it all (theoretically anyway), so then they'd be better off raising their prices and we'd be right back to where we started. (Ok, I'll keep my economic terms out of this, eheh) Anyway.. you're completely right about this being horid. Let's just hope it doesn't cut it. I live in Kirksville, MO and have transportation to STL. I will be attending that show with five friends, so I will not buy tickets nor sit with the EDAs (unless its an amazing coincidence...) As far as I know, the only way to get tickets for that show are through Dialtix - (314) - 968 - 1800. Tickets are not yet on sale, Rev. Jim is checking up on them periodically. I will be staying at a friends house in St. Louis, and Rev. Jim is picking me up sometime Saturday morning and taking me to KC. My ticket (just one, just me) for KC is going to be bought by Laura Capello (correct me if I'm wrong...) As far as overnight accomodations in KC, my part in it is up to Jim, since he is the one taking me home. If he wants to leave Saturday night, than we shall. He's taking me from KC to Kirksville. Those are what I understand to be my plans. I am free to have dinner, etc., with any EDAs for the KC show, whatever we plan is fine with me. Laura, you /are/ going to buy my ticket, right? (Did Rev. Jim run this by you?) If there are any questions from anybody about my schedule, or anything I should be aware of that will change my plans, please let me know. And Laura, please reply and confirm about the ticket purchase, if you would. Thanks.
