(Inspired by seeing a POY CD in the computer games section today) b) Hiding the POY CDs in the rap section c) If you're at Best Buy or Circuit City, slip one or two into a dishwasher, microwave, or fridge 2) Have some innocent little kid take off his coat and stand in the rain and get very sick from pneumonia. They can say Jewel's music made this kid get very sick and FG will have to be pulled off the shelves and taken off the air. Meanwhile, if the new album does come out in Spring 1998, you can get it for FREE! Save an aluminum can a day--when the new album finally comes out, you can cash in your cans and get it for free. OK, about Matt Willcourt's Wierd Coincidence post: More coincidence in the Craft Soundtrack: Jewel is the name of an Alaskan native singer/songwriter on the Craft Soundtrack. Neve Campbell stars in The Craft. She also plays Julia Salinger on Party of Five. On Party of Five, they call her "Jule" for short which is a homophone for "Jewel." I frequently have posted about similarities between Jewel and my favorite artist Prince. Now it doesn't seem like many here are Prince fans, but still, the similarities continue. Jewel has a new album recorded and ready to come out. She has moved on musically and wants to get a new album out there. She plays the music from the new album at all her concerts. Atlantic decides, hey we can make money off her, let's delay her album. A year goes by and the new album comes out, but by then, Jewel is sick of it, she doesn;t play the music from it anymore, and has moved on musically, but Atlantic will insist on letting it run it's course. An endless cycle begins. Many people scoffed at Prince's squabbles with Warner Bros, but they are the same exact thing. He is a prolific writer and wants his music out there. Warners refused to release the Gold Experience. he played the music at all his concerts, then when they finally released it, he refused to promote it saying that it was old and not interesting anymore. Now, unlike some, I am glad that Jewel is becomng a success, but if it's at the cost of her artistic integrity, then it's not worth it. It makes me wonder how long until Jewel is appearing in concert with slave written on her face. Oh well, I'm sorry the album won't come out, but I'm grateful that I'll get to see her in an intimate setting again (the Tower in Philly) And I guess I'll have ot get some of my Jewel starved buddies some live audios (relax, not JS!) There is still a long life expected for >this single by Atlantic. One thing that record companies strive for is >to keep their recordings on the charts (& thus selling) as long as >possible BEFORE releasing new product. (It's generally considered >unwise business to have 2 releases by one artist competing for sales >with each other.) I think that the reason why so many artists who have hit songs fall from public favor is because of this very strategy. Record companies think an album still has life left in it (which it very well may) and try to milk it for everything its worth. In the meantime, consumers who've had said album for over a year begin to get tired of the album and move on to other artists. When the record company finally decides that they can no longer squeeze blood from the stone, they put out the new album. But the problem is that there seems to be some goofy thing with the listening public that unless an artist remains in the public eye, they tend to fizzle out when they release new material long after the prior album. I think one of the main reasons why the Beatles were/are so popular is that in the span of five or six years, they released over *12* albums worth of material. Yes, they were an incredible band and that definitely had an effect, but they never gave the pulic a chance to forget that by releasing a new album every nine or so months. Pieces of You is almost *three* years old now, and although I still love Jewel's music, but I'm getting sick of this album. She and her music have matured so much since then and it's time for the world at large to hear it. So, Jewel, unless you want to go the way of Vanilla Ice or the Gin Blossoms, I suggest you release your new album ASAP. Completely unrelated here, but this is for all you male Jewel fans out there. Is it just me, or do guys who are Jewel fans get no respect from there other guy friends? I guess they just mock that which they don't understand. Also, is it just me or have you ever asked a bunch of people, "Is it just me or..." and gotten "It's just you" in reply? Somehow I see this happening to me again.... (due to albummer delay) Hi everyone, I just got a private Email from a longtime EDA who is very disenchanted with what has transpired here today with the announcement of the delay in the release of the new CD. He pretty much told me he's leaving the list. Here's what I wrote him: Take a few days and think about all of this. The EDAs are a few folk. 750 maybe. Many of us have tons of Jewel material. (some have little, I know, but we as a whole can alleviate that....and do) 99.9% of the music listeners in this country has not heard much Jewel. To them, PoY was released when WWSYS started to chart. POY IS a new CD to the rest of the world. Hell, it IS to me actually, I bought it 10 months ago. 2/3 of THIS list likely bought it since last May. Yeah, so we have to wait another year. but look what WE have or know about!!! 1) Innerchange Days 2) JewelStock and it's memories 3) JewelStock TAPES!!! 4) Rare Angels (treed tape) 5) Radio Angels (treed Tape) 6) Save The Linoleum (promo CD) 7) Phyllis Barnaby Finally Gets A Bra (promo CD) 8) Spew+ 9) Video Compilations 10) Los Angeles JA Ford Tape 11) The soon to be treed (leaf call Monday) Jeweltide Carols & 5/18/96 Boston tapes and the list goes on & on. What does the USA and the world have? 1) Poy and 2 releases. (maybe SOME of the above too) POY is NEW to the USA. This whole decision makes perfect sense to me. Foolish Games DESERVES to be heard by this country, 'tweaked' or not. Jewel deserves a Grammy for that song/recording. I think she may get it in 1998. What does it mean to be an EDA? To make friends, to meet each other at shows where "what's 'er name" is singing. To trade tapes freely. To tree tapes freely. JewelStock. The NH and Temple get togethers. DuffStock. LizStock. All of these events and occurances were/are secondary or maybe equal to Jewel concerts (to me anyway). Heck, DuffStock and LizStock (20 EDAs!!!) are not/were not even built around a concert. 20 EDAs at LizStock (no Jewel concert) may be the 3rd or 4th largest gathering of EDAs we've had!!! To me, being an EDA is secondary to being a Jewel fan. I've met too many friends on this list that I'd not want to give up. I can name 15 people right now on this list that I'd be less willing to lose as a friend than I would to lose Jewel as a musical inspiration. Please stay on the list. Sleep on it a few days. Wasn't it just two short weeks ago we were getting complaints of lack of Jewel Content? See what a few TV appearances, an AMA award, tour dates and a delay in the CD release does? A new album would be nice but more and smaller tour dates are better anyway. Foolish Games as a single, I dunno. Sooner or later Jewel's luck with only marginally radio-friendly songs has to run out. And this one's kinda long so I dont know if it can continue to be sucessful. Remember, this album may be selling millions of copies, but the ONLY two songs on the album with a band backing Jewel have already been released. The rest is all acoustic and slow, hopefully a disappointing surprise to all the people who bought it looking for pop music instead of folk, kinda like all the people who bought Tracy Chapman's album back in the day based only on Fast Car and were disappointed by the rest of the album's lack of upbeat material. 1998 is a long time and it doesnt make me happy, but it kinda does because maybe people will get tired of Jewel, maybe a new sensation will come along and take some of her buyers away, maybe the female singer songwriter trend will die a little. Maybe Jewel will actively try not to sell out, like Tori Amos and sarah McLaughlin and Ani DiFrnaco. Maybe maybe maybe. Well, just venting here. Dan? Mr. BB? I understand their reasoning. Jewel has a lot to be thankful to Atlantic for. Here is a major record label with the vision to recognize the talent in a young girl essentially singing in the street, sign her, and help her achieve her dream in the way she wanted to do it. They helped Jewel produce an album that represented who she was, and not what Atlantic wanted to make her into. And they have given her fantastic support and promotion, hammering the two singles to radio, even after slow starts that would have doomed other releases. Now it has paid off with a platinum-selling CD, two top-ten hits, and now breaking success overseas. With the success of YWMFM, along with Jewel's American Music Award and probable Grammy, Atlantic is quite right to assume that there is plenty of success yet to come from Pieces Of You. Some of us have been listening to it for two years now, but it's amazing how slowly others become aware of music and are probably just now hearing about Jewel. That's one reason Jewel always says the same things in every interview, because she knows there are still new people listening every time. Besides making wonderful music, Jewel and Lenedra are wise businesswomen. I'm sure they're _at least_ as anxious as we are for the release of the new album. After all, if you think we're tired of the old songs, how do you think Jewel feels? But remember, besides being her art, this is also Jewel's livelihood, and good business sense says you don't turn down the opportunity to make hundreds of thousands of dollars when it comes your way, especially if you've worked hard for it. When sales of POY finally start to slow down, the new album will still be there. In the meantime, Jewel has given us a lot of new music to enjoy through our tapes, for free. And I suspect she'll keep playing those tantalizing new songs in concert, knowing that her biggest fans will get them on tape to trade and enjoy between albums. In fact, I think she gets as much fun out of doing that as we do in catching her! This delay could end up being a good thing for Jewel too. We've heard there is news coming about some great new projects. I don't know what they are yet, but a break between albums might give Jewel a chance to do some acting or other things she wouldn't be able to if she had to start touring in support of the new album right away. I'm sure we won't go through the whole year without some new Jewel stuff to enjoy!
