Also available on this tour are 4 new t-shirts. Two of them are photo T's. One other has a tour drawing that Jewel did herself, and the 4th is a graphic of an "old bar sign" that has a computer generated JEWEL on it. I forget exactly what Lenedra said(I was writing furiously) but I believe Jewel's friend BiBi took the original bar sign photograph. Anyway, my last shot will be Europe it looks like unless she will only be there for April, in which case she would be leaving just as I would be arriving. As Gomer would say, "suprise suprise suprise". Is there any idea on when these dates will become available? If so, would you post them? I remember the Europe dates not being posted last year, and everyone was wondering where she was. I really can't believe my best shot at seeing Jewel live will be in Europe. It's Chelsey's b'day Tuesday and as part of her present she was able to take a couple of her girlfriends along and I took my son. So, it was a total of 5 kids and two adults in two cars heading south to Java Joe's. I took a digital camera along for picts. Kaili unloaded 16 shots in 15 minutes, mostly of Steve and Stinky. Well Epic records was there so they played a lot of new stuff and they seemed a little tight but it didn't take long for them to loosen up. Stinky was on his best behavior; no spitting took place. So just before they took there break Jewel sneaks in, spotted by Nancy of course who always has one eye on the door. I didn't catch a glimpse of her until she was behind the cafe counter. I turned around and took a long look and she looked back and smiled. I don't know if she recognized me but she recognized Nancy. Nancy gave me the okay to delete the pictures as we were pretty sure that she would be joining, as Nancy calls, them "the boys" on stage shortly. After a few more songs Jewel joins them and Kaili proceeds to unleash her budding photography skills. Jewel was wearing a light blue vintage style coat and (after she took off her coat) a beautiful vintage style dress. She really looked classy. They did two songs together: Old Lover's House and Daddy She's A Goddess. She then anounced that she wouldn't have to come back to San Diego anymore between her tour because the Rugburns were going to be opening for her the entire 5 weeks. I don't know if that's how long the tour is but that is what she said. (So whoever wrote that they'd just as soon tear up their Rugburn tickets and listen to their cd's, bummer because my grandfather had a really cute ass. And double bummer because I guess you'll miss Jewel too.) Sorry, I had to get that off my chest but don't go considering it a flame. I've only had 3 hours sleep and I'm just really excited about the whole tour. Okay, so after the break they came back and played for about two more hours and about half way through that Nancy sees Jewel leaving. She let's me know she is going to slip out and see if she can say hi. She takes Kaili along. But of course Chelsey notices and she and her 2 friends all converge on Jewel outside the cafe. Nancy tells me she was sweet and wonderful and most of all unpretentious. I'll have too look that one up. She talked with her for awhile and then they said goodbye. I'll have to clear the rest of what they talked about with Nancy. Not that it's that big a deal but somethings Jewel shares because she knows her fans respect a certain amount of privacy. Anyway, they finished playing at two. Two little girls around 6 and 7 took over the stage at one time and at another a 60-70 year old man walked out of the crowd and went on stage and got about 3 feet from Steve's face and started taking pictures. The funny part is when he crouched down to waist level and took a picture of some young women with a short little dress on not more than 3 feet from her too. Well, I've rambled enough. If anyone is interested in seeing the picts just let me know what format: gif, pict, jpeg. The picts are the clearest then jpeg and the gifs are okay. I'll pick a few of the best shots and attach. I'm trying to figure out what uuencoded means and whether or not it expedites the emailing of the pictures. does anyone have any advice that way I could send all of them to some of you. Anyone with a website interested in these pictures? Thanks if you read all this and please make the Rugburns feel good about their show even if they might be a little nervous. There's a multi-way tie for second place, and I won't be able to list all of them. but here's some: 2. Jewel autographed one of the pictures I took of her 4 weeks ago, to my daughter. She was sweet and gracious all evening. I gave Jewel all of the other photos I had with me, as well as an 8x10 color xerox of the EDA banner she signed on 1/3. I told her how thrilled we all are about the tour and the fact that the Rugburns are on the bill. I told this to each of the Rugburns, and Duffy, too! Everyone is excited and glad that the EDAs are, too! 2. We had at least 6 EDAs together by my count; that's practically a minyan. 2. I had the *pleasure* of introducing Igor to Jewel. 2. I got to see Cindy Lee Berryhill again (albeit briefly) -- she performs with hewr orchestra tonight at the Alligator in Santa Monica [be there!], after a quality day with her b.f., Paul, who is unique and wonderful and way high on my list of favorite visionaries, teachers and avatars. We knew all the tour dates were very important to you, so that's why I posted them all first (Saturday's digest). As you know, I mentioned there being some great news, some good news & some "not so good" news. I've agonized a bit on telling you all this part, but I might as well get the "not so good" news over with. Just remember, that I am simply a messenger. Please do not flame me nor deluge me with emails, the following is all I know. While reading this, keep in mind that although we all love Jewels' writing & music, the best interests of her career occasionally do not coincide with the wishes of this list. OK. Here I go..... Rumors have been running rampant on the release date for Jewels new album. Major magazines have published April 15th as a release date. One list member posted that it might be July. Both of these possibilities are incorrect. At the moment, "You Were Meant For Me" is achieving Top Ten status on more & more charts. There is still a long life expected for this single by Atlantic. One thing that record companies strive for is to keep their recordings on the charts (& thus selling) as long as possible BEFORE releasing new product. (It's generally considered unwise business to have 2 releases by one artist competing for sales with each other.) Lenedra informed me that Atlantic will soon revise their plans due to the incredible impact YWMFM is experiencing. The absolute earliest that a new album would even be considered being released would be September. However this is NOT likely. Read on & I'll explain the rest of the scenario. According to Lenedra, what may happen next is this. In May (after the tour), Jewel would be going back in the studio. They will "tweak" the recording of "Foolish Games" by recording new vocals & remixing it for a 3rd single release off "Pieces Of You". This would then be released when YWMFM has run its course. As many of you will agree, "Foolish Games" is a much stronger song than either YWMFM or WWSYS. (I think so too. Lenedra agrees & Atlantic is obviously feeling the same way.) So later in the year, it's highly likely this re-recorded version of "Foolish Games" will be released as the 3rd single & then it will have to run IT'S course. It has obvious Top Ten potential too, & probably will enjoy a long chart life. They fully expect it to carry very well thru the last half of 1997 and into next year. What this all means (& the part I've dreaded telling you) is that it's becoming highly likely that the 2nd Jewel album will be released sometime during the first quarter of next year, 1998. I realize this is very disappointing news to EDAs, but remember the best interests for Jewels' career do not necessarily coincide with the wishes of this list. To have another song off P.O.Y. go Top Ten is a great success for Jewel. In related news, the formerly considered titles for the album have been discarded with the passing of time. I will next post all about that as I do have that information. It's quite an interesting (& fun!) story. I know that it will take awhile for the impact of this post to set in. Remember, this list has supported Jewel when few knew who she was. I sincerely hope that this disappointment will not change that for anyone. The EDA's are so connected & knowledgable, that now it's neccesary to give the world a chance to catch up a little! ;-) There still are lots of good things coming & a few GREAT brand new projects will be revealed in the next few days. I will be squeezing in a lot more info for you this week, when I have time. Hang in there. And remember, please don't hate the messenger! :-) Hope to meet a few more of you at upcoming shows. (whoa--there I said it--running for cover!) First of all, I want to thank everyone on this list for being so nice, and putting alot of effort into everything that you do, you all keep me from dying of boredom. This is by far the friendliest list I've ever been on, and I'm glad to be on it. Second, I just got done watching Phenomenon, and is it just me, or is "Have a little faith in me" placed at just the right point? I almost cried, that movie was very, very good. If any of you havent seen it, go rent it now. Third, for the 5 or so people who requested the Late Late show from me, I am recording them as I type, and they will be out tommorow unless some sort of natural disaster keeps me from the mailbox. - -Daniel (The Ugly Angel) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Feb 1997 15:50:34 PST From: raisingrrrl@juno.com Subject: New Album Guess everyone's a little upset about the new album news. Considering POY is already like double platinum, I would think now would be the time to release the new CD. You know, it would keep the listeners' interest peaked. Why not let YWMFM run it's course and release a new single off of the new CD? Instead of another POY single. People need a whole new product not just a piece of the old one. The 2 million people who already have POY deserve a new CD. We don't want the Alanis thing happening with Jewel. I mean when I got Alanis's CD after only one single was released I really loved it and listened to it all the time, same thing with No Doubt, but now 4 or 5 singles later I'm bored of it. I hate to see this happen to Jewel, but I fear it will if Atlantic chooses to hold off releasing the next album. Not to say I would get bored of Jewel. : ) Another strategy would be if she had put lots of b-sides on the POY singles, but there aren't any on the American releases of them. Just more songs off of POY. I always buy Tori Amos's singles cause there is always new material on them. It keeps me interested, instead of just having the one CD to listen to. Just my $.02. With the aggressive touring Jewel does, I would think that by next year her fans will be hurting for a new album. Pieces is good, but think about all her newer material she's doing in concert. If a new album isn't going to be released for about a year, is it wise to play all those new songs? Of course i'll buy the next album, but i don't expect many surprises. I expect none if it's next year before Atlantic releases. One of the few things that can turn me off to an artist is when they don't release albums often enough. I remember waiting ages for some bands- when nothing was on the charts. If they aren't prolific, fine, but Jewel certainly doesn't have that problem. Get those goodies out for us to enjoy! I just hate to see starving fans suck up boots- but i'm sure they will, and Atlantic will lose money in the end. Just my uneducated, inexperienced opinion. Perhaps they're right though. Many are just hearing of Jewel. Anyone with experience agree with Atlantic? Igor? Dan? Mr. BB? I understand their reasoning. Anyway, here's to Jewel's success- congrats! I just hope the number of people she entertains isn't limited by Atlantic's profits. Have a nice day, put on those JS tapes, James, who would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. BB for his undying effort! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 Feb 1997 13:06:01 -0800 From: Sinjin@ecn.com Subject: How to get Jewel's new album Ok, since YWMFM is getting the airplay and success it deserves, and the people at Atlantic have decided to delay the release of Jewel's new album till after the third single release of "Foolish Games" has run it's course, we have only one option: STOP BUYING JEWEL! Yup, that's right...whenever Jewel is on the radio, turn the channel. Don't dish out the cash for the "FG" single, and if she's touring in your town, make the sacrifice and not go see her. I know this is hard, but consider the benefits: a sooner release of Jewel's second album! And to satisfy your musical needs, instead of listening to Jewel we should all go out and buy the Spice Girls CD. We should request the Spice Girls on the radio and we should buy multiple tickets to see the Spice Girls in concert. If the record company execs from the Spice Girls' label shares the same business sense as Atlantic records, think of what this would do! It could quite possible prevent the Spice Girls from releasing a second album in the United States indefinately! Just think, a new Jewel album as soon as possible, and the Spice Girls never getting another album on our shores...what a great idea! As most people on this list know, Jewel has a song on the "Craft" sdtk, which also includes a Heather Nova version of "I Have The Touch". She also has a song on the "Phenomenon" sdtk, which has a Peter Gabriel version of the same song, "I Have The Touch". Weird, huh? Are they going to use all that (what would be year an a half old) material for the new album? Or is she going to go in and re-record the album? Perhaps some newer material. We all know how much she changed from PoY in concert, and I expect that that progression to continue. I don't think she would be happy releasing an album of year old material. (Of course that is purely speculation). (To clarifly, not the songs themselves, but the recordings of those songs). Especially since she is going in to re-record FG...I hope we don;t get a Smile type thing going here. Any thoughts on this? Ever-present, Tom Everyone should check out Tara Maclean!! She doesn't actively participate, but we keep in contact, and she knows about the list. With her permission, I'm posting this "anonymously" for her. - ----- this is it! =) ----- Hey to everyone on the Jewel mailing list, last night I went to the show so I thought I'd share my experience. I have to admit that I haven't been listening to Jewel for quite as long as most of you, but still, I was excited at the chance of seeing her live. I'm sending this to my friend Ray 'cause he wants to post it on your list. February 1, 1997 Saturday It was just this afternoon that a friend told me about The Rugburns playing at Java Joe's tonight in San Diego -- with the strong implication that Jewel would be there. I had to work earlier tonight, but I got off a little after 9pm. I drove over to Ocean Beach to where the coffeehouse is and parked. As I walked up to the place, I could hear them doing "You Were Meant For Me." (This must be the place!) The Rugburns did many many great songs -- most of which had been written recently. I'm not all that familiar with their music, but I was quite impressed, especially with the mass of songs they've written. Loved the stories behind each one. I was on the far left side of the audience, near the stage, so I noticed when Jewel appeared in the side room on the other side of the stage. I wasn't sure if it was her at first, but after a while I figured it had to be her. Around 11pm, the band asked, "is Jewel back there?" but she wasn't ready so he said he wanted to do one more song first. I'm surprised there was no noticeable reaction from the audience at the mention of her name. After that one song, they introduced Jewel and she came on stage. Everyone clapped, but somehow I expected a bigger reaction. She was wearing a long light blue flowered dress, and over it, she wore a solid light blue coat with shiny buttons (which she took off after the first song). Her outfit was topped with a pink-tinted hat. They sang the "doo-wop" song ("Impala") again, since they had written it together. Both the bass player and guitar player/lead singer had mics on stands. Jewel stood to the right of the lead singer (his right), so she was on the leftmost part of the stage. She and he sang face to face at his mic. Then they did "Old Lover's House" (according to Tom Morales's message that I've read). It's a sort of slow number with staccato-like vocals. Interesting... She told the audience that she "doesn't have to come home anymore" because The Rugburns will be opening for her on tour. Then, he said that we should all congratulate her... everyone applauded, but she didn't want him to make a big deal. So instead of mentioning her American Music Award win or Grammy nominations, he joked that she just learned how to open a checking account. (ha ha) Then he said they were going to do a "nice sick song" called "Daddy, She's A Goddess", another one that they had written together a while back. On this one, she really busted out vocally, compared to the other two songs. Amazing. It was a real rocker. The band took a break after that set. A lot of the audience left at that point. After the break, the band went back on. I saw Jewel talking with some poeple in the side room. A couple songs later, I saw someone ask her to come up to the counter, and she did. I went over there and saw that a girl was getting her autograph. A man (must be Larry/ GraywolfLA@aol.com) had some concert photos and was giving them to her. She looked through them, and signed one for him, "To Nicole" in silver ink. There was an 8.5"x11" piece of paper inside a plastic sheet protector that said something about EDA -- the man then gave that to her. After she finished talking to him, I kindly asked Jewel for her autograph, putting my CD insert in front of her, and handing her a pen. She graciously obliged, signing "Jewel '97". The music was just loud enough that we wouldn't have been able to really hear each other without shouting, so we didn't really have any kind of conversation. After that, she went back into the room she had been in. I sat down to watch more of the show. Around 1am, I went up to the counter to order some coffee, and that is when I saw Jewel leaving. All in all, a great night! I'm glad I went, so thanks the Jewel mailing list for the tip, and of course Ray who encouraged me to go in the first place (for which he will be nicely rewarded :). - ----- that's it! =) ----- Ray Wong, Everday Angel PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #67 **************************
