I haven't had much of a problem with people bashing bands I like until I asked if anybody had seen any Toad the Wet Sprocket videos, and I get the above as a reply. This person (they declined to sign their email with their real name, merely EDA) is getting a private response, but forces me to ask the question of why we can't all accept that we have musical tastes outside of Jewel, and not everybody likes everything everybody listens to... If you don't like Toad, don't say anything until somebody writes email saying: Hey, if you don't like Toad, write me, I'd like to hear about it. For heaven's sake, "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Does this adage mean nothing? Bush is nice, and I'm happy y'all like Marilyn Manson... But I don't like them that much (they're okay...) and that's why I don't say anything when the topic come up... Toad is one of the best bands around, not to mention the happiest I know. Their music is very moving, so it takes more than two songs of listening to fully appreciate its depth. I owned the album "Fear" for two years before I discovered that it was a true gem. Now I own five albums, and they're my most listened to. I strongly recommend this band to any Jewel fan. The only real negative is that an intimate Jewel show may become a thing of the past, and these larger shows will become the norm. But I think Jewel will try and avoid that scenario by doing shows at small colleges, like she's doing now at Mt. Holyoke and Colby, and maybe do an unannounced show at some coffeeshop or small venue. As for sharing Jewel with everyone else, I see this as a positive. Jewel has a positive message to send, and the more people that can hear that message, the better. I doubt she will change as a person or artist as a consequence of her popularity because she seems to be the same sort of optimistic person she was before. I suppose the one lasting effect her popularity can have, for which she isn't culpable, is the demand for tickets to the shows. It is unfortunate that die hard fans will be unable to obtain tickets because of scalped ticket prices, and rapidly purchased tickets. But as long as she sells records and performs well, she'll be able to be a professional musican, which she has said is her dream. So as long as she's able to live her dream it can't be that bad.
