You're entitled to an opinion, most certainly, and here is mine: Jewel used to strike me as pretentious in interviews, always coming up with these grand philosophical statements that seemed more fitting coming from the mouth of a 50 year old English teacher with patches on the elbows of his corduroy suit-jacket. But then I got to thinking: We shouldn't condemn Jewel or brand her as a pretentious show-off just because she may possibly know a lot about philosophy as well as being very skilled at expressing herself and her philosophy. I think growing up in a place like Alaska would give somebody a lot of time to think about what life means to them, and I'm guessing she is just very sure of what she thinks about life and all... So, in sum, I don't think she's pretentious, I think she's incredibly intelligent and adept at expressing her ideas. But I do see how this may come across as being pretentious. - - Todd "And it may be that sometimes love occurs without pain or misery." - E. First of all for someone to say that they "hate" people that go to concerts and shows that only know a couple songs is way off base. Why are there concerts ... so people that enjoy the music can go to a live performance. I know some of Jewel's music but not all. I do love her music and all that I have heard about her. To think that before I learned as much as I have or even now be turned away by Jewel saying, "No you can not come into the concert you do not know all of my songs." is just silly. Next I wanted to say that Jewel seems like she is very happy performing at large performances...she speaks of living a life of a person who's dream has come true...this sems that she wants things to be as they are, anything that is not as she wants it would be things that can not really be prevented like mobs all over or weardo that approach. And the people that think that the know her thoughts....only she really knows what she wants and how she thinks. Remember that if you want to understand Jewel you first have to understand your own inerthoughts. We have all made Jewel out to be a goddess ( well she is ) but she is a person just like the rest of us. :-) and it was said in a previous quote that she would have a lot of time to think growing up in Alaska...we I agree and also add that many people think about stuff and it never becomes verbalized..that is a large reason that I think so much of Jewel, she thought she wrote she sang.... ok I know there was more I wanted to say but I am really tired and can not remember it all...hehe so please do not take too much offense in anything I said just a passing though and I do LUV the music and the thoughts...and this list....and wish Jewel the best. I want to add a note of thanks to everyone that replyed to my gift message.... I think that the idea of the book is the best one yet but since it was done not too long ago it should be put off. So if not it what are we to do??? Thanks for your time Roy of the strange thought process society :-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 18:51:38 -0500 From: "Don" Subject: Jewel Popularity PLUS/MINUS For me I'm EXTREMELY happy Jewel is getting the recognition she deserves. When I first saw her I thought she was great but would never make it to the point of getting AMA awards or regular playtime on the POP/HIT stations. This is good because it assures us that we will get more CD's from Jewel AND Im happy that Jewel is able to make a good living doing what she loves. That is what is important. The Minus for me is that the first time I saw jewel it was free in a 20 seat cafe and she just passed a bucket around at the end of the show for money. But the Boston Orpheum show sold out so quick I had to go to an agency and Pay $55 dollars a piece for the tickets(thats for 20th row. within the first 10 rows was $75!!!). Which means I can't afford to take my girlfriend because she cant afford that much either so I found a friend who could afford it. This is not jewels fault. The $20 dollar face value of the ticket is more than reasonable at this day and age. So I'm happy jewel is now able to bring her music into the lives of more and more people and make a good living at it. We all can't sit around wishing we had her all to ourselves that would be selfish. I think the theory that she doesn't want to be this popular is wrong. Like me I just dont think she expected it. But I don't think we have to worry she is centered enough that All the popularity in the world isnt going to change her as a person. I'm happy Jewel. And Ill be there on Feb 21st. I AM MAKING A PLEA TO ALL EDAs TO PLEASE NOT DUB AND FREELY DISTRIBUTE THE JUST PASSING THRU CD OR ANY OTHER COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MATERIAL as i mentioned yesterday, proceeds from "Just Passin Thru" benefit a charity. there is an explanation on the cd: Proceeds from the sale of this project benefit 'Healthcare for the Homeless.' the key word in that sentence is SALE. by dubbing this tape for another list member, or even your grandmother, or mother teresa, you are depriving a CHARITABLE organisation of receiving funding. in the past i have asked list memebers not to dub any of Jewel's music that is commercially availble on soundtracks or other compliations. for example if EDAs dub "Have a Little Faith in Me" from Phenomenon and we freely distribute it, then we are depriving Jewel, and other people in the recording industry of their hard earned money. now i know that some EDAs disagreed with me, and though it was okay to dub commercially available material. i can sleep nights if Jewel or record company people are deprived of a few dollars. but in the case of the "Just Passin Thru" CD, Jewel and the other artists involved are donating their music to raise money for a charity. if EDAs are dubbing this CD and freely distributing it, then a charity is being deprived of funding. i will lose sleep knowing that EDAs are depriving a charity of funding we have all heard that Jewel and Lenedra are opposed to bootleg cds. i think that Jewel and Lenedra would be saddened to know that EDAs are dubbing commercially available recordings, especially when a recording will benefit charity. i fully realise that this CD is difficult to obtain, but i would rather go without it, than deprive a charity. the CD is still commercially available, but only in a limited area. i am SURE that a few EDAs in the DC-MD-VA area could arrange to purchase a some copies for other angels :) :) :) if you read this entire diatribe, i commend your patience :) peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org "Innocence Maintained" is a moderated, news only email list providing its subscribers with timely information about Jewel Kilcher. Well, that won't work anyway, because you have no way to completely syncronize the two sources. Tape speed can vary in minute ways that are not noticible to viewers, but can throw off a separate audio program. You'd need a full post-production suite to sync the music accurately enough to Jewel's lip movements. In this particular case, it still wouldn't work because the song was rerecorded for the video release and that version is, oh, I don't know, about a half step faster. However, Keith Sweat's "Nobody" is showing some gray hair at #6. With regards to Jewel's disdain for popularity, I really don't see what the problem is. I think she can sell well and not sell out. That decision can only be made by Jewel herself. It will be up to her to choose between the civic center and the coffeehouse. And for a girl who called a van home a couple of years ago, being a platinum-selling recording artist is a pretty drastic step. Even in 1994 when she was able to find a house and not have to worry so much about survival, she had no idea of being one of her label's banner artists two years later. Analyzing her "legend," I've ascertained Jewel's a fundamentally nice person who got one hell of a break. Now she's trying to cope with the culture shock of becoming The Next Big Thing and reconsile it with what she's always known before. I suppose a lot of people are expecting her to "act like a celebrity," which she considers completely ridiculous. She wants to make a living at her music and have that music heard, and she can do that now. She's also being pressured by all the media scrutiny. Like old friend Sean Penn, she probably wants to ensure she'll have the private time she'll need put things in perspective. And, when you're an artist-type, _that's_ important. Angels, as you meet Jewel in her travels, for God's sake don't treat her like a celebrity. Try to interact with her as you would with any casual acquaintence, except for the autograph part. She'll probably appreciate it. Addicted To Noise staff writer Gil Kaufman reports: This is getting a little creepy. No Doubt held down the top spot on the Billboard charts for the eighth week in a row for the week ending Jan. 26 on sales of 144,000 copies of Tragic Kingdom according to Soundscan. And, in their 56th week on the charts, the group finally hurtled over the five million units sold landmark, a feat they accomplished while again holding Madonna and the Evita soundtrack down to the runner-up position for the second week in a row on sales of 122,000. With the exception of the soundtrack to The Preacher's Wife and LeAnn Rimes' debut switching places, the latter up one notch to seventh, the rest of the top ten was just as it's been for almost a month, a situation that will undoubtedly change when the Offspring's Ixnay on the Hombre is released shortly. And, cementing its reputation as one of the slowest burns in pop history, Jewel's debut, Pieces of You, in its 50th week on the Billboard charts rose five notches to its highest position, #12, nearly two years (and one AMA Favorite New Artist award) after it was first released. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jan 1997 22:25:44 -0500 (EST) From: ABershaw@aol.com Subject: Updated Tour info again Here's the latest scoop on confirmed dates: 97/02/20 Chapin Hall,Mt. Earlier today, we were at 994 total subscribers for the three versions of this list, and are at 1006 at the moment I am writing this. Even though there are MANY multiple subscriptions, and likely only really about 700-800 actual individuals subscribed, being the useless triva nut that I am, I just had to pass on the news of this milestone to you all. :) I'm going to talk to Jeff (list owner) about a prize for the 1,000,000th subscriber. AWESOME idea!!! >Much actually seems to respond better to more creative requests than >simply lots of mail. RSVP is always showing "wierd" stuff from fans, long >letters, strange fan-ish posters, "art". Tape fake fur letters spelling >out JEWEL to a siblings forehead and take a picture and I guarantee Much >will play it. :-) I thought of a GREAT GREAT GREAT idea! Here's what we do (it's in about 3 parts): Part 1: Pool a bit of money (mabye $50) and have a bouqet sent to Much Music RSVP with thistles, daisies, (mabye tigerlillies), sunflowers, pussywillows, and cattails. Have it have a card which says "This is a request from the Every Day Angels to play the origional version of You Were Meant For Me." Part 2: Have EVERYONE make a LONG letter reqesting the origional YYMFM, and have someone with one of those printers that all the paper is connected print it out, so it's like a really long scroll of paper with all the messages from the EDAs. send that with the same thing that the bouquet would have. Part 3 (rather iffy): Videotape 3 of the EDAs doing this: They are in a darkened room, with red light upon them. The camera goes to each of them, and they say part of a spell (HOWEVER, NOT THE "double double toil and trouble" one. Shakespeare would turn in his grave if he saw some of the uses of that today!) It would then cut to a shot of them standing over a bubbling cauldron, then they would each put a part of what would define JEWEL, like someone would put in a thistle, someone would put in sugar, ground bay leaves, and cinnamon (Jewel's sweet but has a secret flavor which makes her unique, beautiful, and special), and another person would put in an angel figurine. The thing just continues to bubble, but nothing happens. "Nothing is happening!" one of them will say, and the other says "We must be missing something!" and the 3rd one says "I know!" and takes the PoY CD out of a brown bag, and everyone gasps "pieces of you!". The camera shot switches to a overhead downward shot, showing everyone's hands holding PoY over the bubbling cauldron, and suddenly they all drop it and it falls in. There is a BOOM! and a flash of light. Suddenly, it shows the same scene, but a EDA dressed up like a beautiful ange/an EDA dressed like Jewel is standing in the pot (there's no stuff in the pot anymore). The Angel/Jewel raises her hands, and the album version of YWMFM begins to play. The summoners sit there enjoying the music, and one of them says "Oh, Yeah! I forgot!", picks up a brown bag, takes a handful of glitter from it, and throws it to the camera. Cut to a screen which says "This is a request from the Every Day Angels to play the origional version of You Were Meant For Me."
