Rugburns at Toe's Tavern, Santa Barbara: This was to be only my fourth Rugburns show. This was to be another "adventures of Larry and Igor." I started in San Diego and drove to LA. Larry picked me up from Vanessa's house and drove in pouring rain the rest of the trip. Total trip was 225 miles one-way. The trip was a pleasure thanks tapes that Dave DiCicco and an unnamed EDA sent to Larry. He and I were listening to them for the first time. It didn't matter if we had to drive all the way to SF. One problem was that Larry was drifting away with that big smile as he drove. A few reminders brought him partually back from fantasy land. I'll admit that I was also in no hurry to get to the show. We could have driven all night and just listen to the tapes. Toe's is a small bar smack in the center of State St in downtown SB. As we walked in, we could see a small stage at the far end. The bar ran half way down the right side and 4 pool tables were right at the door. We saw Bob Duffey, the Rugburns manager. He greated us and filled us in on some future shows. As I turned around, I saw two familiar faces. It was the show stopping EDA couple, Tom and Nancy Morales. Men were panting as Nancy walked across the room and women were whispering to each other as they stared at buff Tom. Yes they are still endlessly kissing thoughout the show. Will this honeymoon ever end? Hey Nancy, no more handshakes when we great each other. I want a kiss from now on. Tom can continue greating me with a handshake. The bass player, John Castro, came over and I bought him a drink. We shared the EDA Music label idea with him. He had some positive feedback. Hey Toni and Liz, we told him that they have some super EDA fans in Indianapolis and Toledo. The opening act were Elvis and Buddy Holly cover band. Elvis had the gold costume on and Buddy had a suit and the glasses. People were cheering them on but I was dreading every song. The audience peeked at about 75 people. The Rugburns came on and with the first note you knew that it was going to be a fun night. Finally I'm getting to appreciate Steve's writing ability. He is very talented. A pretty girl standing near us kept getting the flirtatous eye from Steve. He finally told her she was pretty and asked her name. Maria instantly became a brilliant song. He made up three other songs on the spot the same way. He usually does this but he was really on tonight. When Steve came on, he was wearing a plaid suit that looked too big for him. he topped it off with a straw hat that landscapers wear. It didn't take long for the jacket to come off. All night he was drinking glass after glass of red wine. After about the sixth glass, his shirt came off. Then finally he dropped his pants and was standing in his big white boxer shorts. Next he starts singing "kiss my ass Santa Barbara" and drops his shorts and sticks his bare ass at the audience. He then starts kissing John and then Stinky, all the time both Steve and John are still playing. He went out in the audience and gave everybody a kiss, one at a time. Yes Steve kissed me. Then he went back on the stage and started to unbuckle Johns pants. Now both Steve and John are on stage in their boxer shorts and John sticks his bare ass out to everyone. When Steve stuck his ass out, Tom said,"it looks like my grandfathers ass." Well I have never seen his grandfather but it did look like a grandfather ass. Let me now tell you why I think this is important to say. Steve looks in very bad health. He was standing there in his underwear and looked like he must weigh 120lbs. He had all the makings of a sad clown with a big painted smile. As he played, people were reaching onto the stage with magic markers and drawing on his bare body. He was a mannequin just being used for our pleasure. He was our rock & roll whore. I was very pained by what I was watching. It reminded me of Iggy Pop when he would punch himself and sratch himself until he would bleed and the crowd would just cheer him on. Some of you may say that this is only rock & roll, music, art, self expression. To me, I was watching self destruction. We have become used to seeing this in music. Maybe he just needs a little angelfood. What he can use is our support. The Rugburns will be performing this Saturday, Feb 1 at Java Joe's in Ocean Beach, CA. It is a very important night for the Rugburns. I stress that it is a very important night. I can't give any other info why. Let's all come out and show our support. Lets not let this genius group slip into becoming a local bar band. BTW, Steve confirmed what I was seeing during the encore. At this point he was pretty drunk. He poeticly apologized to all the fans for letting them down. He entertained and gave everyone their moneys worth. But he did it at a great expense to himself. Is there some deep reason for this that the gods wish not to >share? Only the future will tell. No. You read your Jewel mailing list quite frequently. VH1 plays Jewel quite frequently. The odd of two frequent events occuring simultaneously are quite high. In two words: Coincidence happens.
