I happened to be looking through a catalog I have that has an angel section and there's this pair of champagne flutes that have an ngal as the stem and base in pewter. They are absolutely gorgeous and made me think of jewel. The pair is like $200 (you can buy them individually too, but who only wants one?). If anyone thinks this is a good idea, I would be proud to take on the project of implementing it. Let me know. Also, if anyone is interested, I'm (with Rob's help) putting together my own personal homepage, which will of course have a section for jewel, if not a page. CoOl, Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jan 1997 19:43:18 -0800 From: "Carter Navarro" Subject: Why the Jon Stewart Interview was Historic Before I get at the heart of it all, let me regale you with Corrections and Amplifications: I too like Garbage, AND Marilyn Manson (MM for short, for whomever asked), and about every other Bush song (though the video for "Greedy Fly" creeps me out). I can give you the names of all the members of Garbage without the CD insert (Shirley Manson, Butch Vig, Steve Marker, and Duke Ericson) AND one of Vig's lesser-known credits ("Throw This Away" on Halo Six, NIN's "Fixed"). And I know the three guys in Garbage aren't THAT old, but the age difference is glaringly obvious in the videos (well, maybe not for "Milk," since in that one nobody comes into focus). Green to red. Machinehead. Poetry. Sheer poetry. ;) OK, now on to the Jon Stewart deal. Stewart did a lot better with Denis Leary than with Jewel, probably owing to the two of them already knowing each other; the first interview was more of a conversation. And I was disturbed by Stewart's numerous "what?"'s. You're an interviewer, Jon. Pay attention! But here's why I'm looking beyond Stewart's annoying lack of hearing: he finally challenged Jewel on her philosophy. Every interview I have seen with Jewel up to this one has been an exercise in media formulaic heavy petting: "Born in Alaska? Lived in a car? You yodel? Will you yodel for me?" I am ALWAYS happy to see Jewel conversing with someone on television or on the radio, but it seems that her pulchritude (a horrid word for a beautiful quality; look it up) and unexpected intelligence/wisdom turns all of her interviewers into Larry King, the master of softball journalism. As much as I admire Matt Pinfield's encyclopedic knowledge of music and his "aw, shucks" demeanor, I can only take so many "wow, that's great"'s from him. Jon Stewart gave us something different. His rebuttal to Jewel's/Joseph Campbell's "Follow Your Bliss" philosophy was the basic and obvious one -- if everyone followed their bliss the world would be Utopia for fifteen seconds then collapse in the absence of garbagemen and bus drivers -- but it was also the only one to have ever been given voice before Jewel in public. We have seen Jewel time and time again speak of "using our hands to manifest thought," "dreams becoming hobbies," etc. (alert to Dennis Harris: it's about time you and I collaborated on something. May I suggest the highly unoriginal idea of a "Jewel Drinking Game?"). But until now have we ever heard these statements as anything other than unquestioned aphorisms? I was happy to see Jewel back herself up. She hasn't merely polished these few Confucian nuggets for release on the unsuspecting public (and suspecting EDAs). She has actually formed a cement philosophy of life (though the cement may still be drying) that should be brought to debate and discussion as all philosophies should. Her ideals may never break through the closemindedness of blokes like Stewart and myself (hey, I'm working on it), but their discussion will certainly enlighten us beyond the terminal repetition of "... deadening our passions ..." By the way, Jewel's new aphorism -- "Cynicism is only safer, not smarter" - -- flashed me back to my ridiculous campaign slogan from my 7th grade student government race: "Vote Carter. It's Smarter." Oh dear, I can't believe I unearthed that for all of you. Needless to say, I lost, but my political career experienced a healthy reincarnation: I served as the student body secretary for three years in a row until I graduated. CGN, Bitter and Twisted Old Man P.S. - Yo, Alan Bershaw! Bet you ten cents that you won't find any Northern California tour dates from your sources! I think Jewel decided my aura, which grows geometrically and now has a radius of about sixty miles (move to the southlands while you can, Tom), isn't conducive to her health. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jan 1997 21:43:27 -0600 From: Jim Schramm Subject: EDA's Well...
