Beautiful women make the best "New Artist" nominees! I don't know anything about Tony Rich (except that he's probably a man and that he probably doesn't look like Salacious Crumb), but judging from the lineup for Best New Artist, if this wasn't the Year of the Woman in music it was certainly the Year of the Gorgeous Woman. We have, of course, Jewel Kilcher, generally agreed upon by men and women, EDA and non-EDA, blind and seeing, to be a Helen of Troy for the 1990's. But check out the rest: LeAnn Rimes, at 9 years old (j/k, I think she's really 16) one-upping Jewel, Alanis Mmoorriisseettee, and Fiona Apple in the REALLY Young Female Musician contest. So attractive she's hired by Target to country line-dance with Looney Tunes. No Doubt, fronted by Marlene Dietrich/Courtney Love hybrid Gwen Stefani. She scared the bejesus out of me both times I saw her on stage (she can high-kick better than Ralph Macchio), but she's also the one who gets put on all the magazine covers. Garbage, the May-December band comprised of three old guys and decidedly non-old Shirley Manson. Though her preference for using eye shadow to imitate a drowsy raccoon grates on me a bit, Manson more than makes up for similarly nomenclatured Maestro of Hideousness Marilyn. I'm not suggesting (nor will I accept suggestions) that the NARAS members are a bunch of Strom Thurmonds trying to make some pretty young thangs really happy, but this year's nominations once again bring my attention to the suspicious correlation between successful female musicians and stunningly attractive female musicians. If any of these women looked like John Popper, would they have the riches and awards along with the talent? Of course a double standard exists here, as it does with most other things. But it's not complete; do YOU think Bush became so popular because of their highly original compositions or deep-felt lyrics? Or does the reason start with a great big "G"? Thank fate, or Strom Thurmond, for keeping Mr. Rossdale off this year's roster. I never thought my last thread would turn into a discussion of "Portrait of a Lady," which I didn't think was that wonderful (you wanna see a good movie, think "The English Patient"). Let's see what tangents this one leads to. I place my bets on Tom Snyder's eyebrows. CGN, Firestarter, Instigator, Midnight Toker P.S. - On the record, I'm happy as a clam that Jewel and Garbage made it onto the list. My appreciation for the others isn't as great (I'd have preferred Fiona Apple over any of them), but I'm not raising a ruckus over their nominations. They are all deserving I'm sure, and their nominations are based on record sales, not looks. "What about talent?" you may ask. This is the Grammys for crying out loud! Since when does talent have anything to do with it? P.S.S. - Since Jewel was nominated, that's when. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 03:44:55 -0500 (EST) From: Horter3@aol.com Subject: Re: New folk, why there is a lack of "Jewel talk" on this list right now. Grab a banana, round up all the usual suspects and point your donkey toward Boston on Friday, February 21st! Tix are $19.50/seat at the Orpheum Theater (not too far from the Boston Commons, where we saw Jewel with Tony Bennett mere months ago). Tix go on sale at 10 am Monday through the box office window or NEXT ticketing service (617-423-NEXT). The best bet is to buy tix in blocks of seats, so we can mostly sit together (say the first three rows?). Otherwise, the experience suffers! (Trust me.) Regardless, EVERYONE is invited to hang out! We've done this many times before (the Paradise in May, Hampton Beach, aka "JewelStock 3" in August and the Commons show this past fall), but there is always someone who says "I saw you guys there, but COULDN'T ..." Common excuses: 1) ...make my way through the crowd. 2) ...overcome my shyness. 3) ...associate the signs saying "EveryDay Angels" with the Jewel list "EveryDay Angels". 4) ...bring myself to stand that close to Harris. NONE of these excuses are acceptable (I talk to strangers at concerts, so you may not be able to avoid me anyway)! There is always a new guy who DOES find us, and entertains us greatly! (Hey, YOU could be the "new guy"!) I'll post details on where and when we will meet before the show, and keep a running list of who's going (so sidepost me when you know you're gonna be there). I have entered your request to be removed from the mailing list of the GW2k Magazine. Thank you, Chris Wahlstrom, Gateway 2000, Inc. If you would like to send any comments regarding the service I have provided, please send them to OLSQUALITY@gw2kbbs.com. Original text: (28 lines follow) I just wanted to let you know what an absolute joke your computers, service, etc is. I was under the mistaken impression that you sold computers that actually worked and had great service. Boy was I wrong. Within 10 minutes of turning on my computer it crashed several times and the hard drive was a total loss. This was just the beginning of my problems. Over the next six months my credit was tied up by Gateway since you wouldn't credit my credit cards back and I was still stuck paying the shipping both ways for a joke of a computer. It is amazing you have the business you do considering how many bad things I have heard since my experience. It's also goes beyond my understanding that in the day of all this high tech stuff that one I wasn't "allowed" to speak to anyone in billing and that it took over six months to credit back my cards. I never even heard one sorry about screwing up all your credit. I warn everyone not to be fooled into thinking you sell a good computer. There was no attempt to rectify anything that occured and in the end I was the one who got screwed. It's one thing to charge someone shipping if they decided they didn't like the computer but it is insane to charge someone shipping when YOU sent a bad computer. Never again will I purchase anything from your company and stop sending me your magazines. I could care less how great you think you are. Yet people on this list would expect a reply from someone as well-known as Chelsea Clinton? Just think of the time it would take *you* to personally respond to 10 items a day... and I'm sure Jewel and Chelsea get many more than that. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jan 1997 16:52:03 -0500 From: Tom Kies II Subject: JC: oooh :) the top 10 is on vh-1 now on the east coast.. Jewel once said (jokingly I think) that she didn't even have time to write her Dad. If you do send her letters though, they usually, and eventually reach her... and her e-mail is printed out and sent to her on the road and she does appreciate it, even if she can't get back to you. Touring is not always the most happy thing and its nice to get a happy letter from someone, even if you don't know who they are :-) Take Care, and Have a Happy Weekend, James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V2 #46 **************************
