Many tall women despise dating men shorter than themselves, so I'm seen as that much more of a prize. Why they'd think I'm a prize to begin with is beyond me, but anyway. Also, I can reach things for people. I did it yesterday in the bookstore. That way I tend to make friends wo don't know what ladders are. The capitulation came in the midst of a massive customer write-in and call-in outcry, orchestrated in large measure by the Viacom-owned networks themselves. TCI backed down just hours before a rally/press conference in Denver with such VH1-friendly musical artists as Don Henley, John Mellencamp, Jewel and Tony Rich. VH1 had arranged the event to chide TCI for dumping the network in Denver (where TCI is based), Boulder, and other parts of the country. When the musicians received word en route that TCI had flip-flopped and promised to suggest a relaunch of MTV and VH1 ''as soon as possible'' to their system general managers, according to TCI spokesman Mike Smith, the Denver news gathering turned into a celebration. ``This is a testament to the power of music, the power of democracy, the power of consumers,'' Henley said. ``The people have spoken and been heard. I'd like to think our coming here made a difference. But I'd just like to commend TCI for listening to the public and for taking such quick action. Cool huh? It is NOT confirmed, and I know how to confirm it. (This will be easy) It could be (and likely is) a fake. It may also be just a ploy by someone to obtain some fan mail destined for Jewel. I'll (or my crony) will post on this as soon as we confirm whether it is a fake or for real. Yeah, I often feel the need to push tall people when they get too close, because they're severely limiting my field of vision. It's kind of fun not to move when someone bigger walks straight towards you, thinking that you will move. I was looking in the TV guide for next week and there is a full page ad announcing this event with JEWEL's name and picture in the ad. Does anyone know if she is going to be there and what awards is she nominated for? Also, the four hour WOMEN FIRST special that is being televised on VH1 on saturday is scheduled for 1:00PM EST. And don't forget Tom Snyder's LATE, LATE Show airing right after David Letterman on friday night. My VCR will definitely be working overtime this weekend! Hi y'all, This is to the newer folk who may be stumped by the fact that there is little "Jewel talk" on this list. There have been two posts to the list today alone from folk perplexed by the lack of "Jewel talk". Reasons? I don't know all the reason of course, but I have some ideas. First and foremost, there is very little going on with Jewel right now. She isn't touring. She is on TV maybe once every three weeks. So the "food for Jewel talk" just ain't there. When she's on TV, (TWICE(?) tomorrow!!) and touring, the Jewel content picks up. Dramatically too I might add. When she isn't touring or making appearances, the "Jewel talk" dies. This just happened from mid-October to late November too. Just about everything we can talk about her has been done already. We've done polls on favorite songs from "Pieces of You". We've done polls on favorite songs NOT on "Pieces of You", polls on the first release from her next CD. We've talked about her 800 acre homestead, her van, the fact that there is no K-Mart in Braintree, her guitars, Michel & the yellow BMW, list t-shirts, "in that picture, is that a lollipop or a cigarette she is holding?" and so on and so forth. It all goes in cycles. Every topic comes back in time. However, when an oddball topic comes up on the list, sometimes it catches on like wildfire. The Chelsea Clinton thread, the tall/short thread, the dreaded llama thread (that somehow I started), the TV trivia thread, etc etc etc. Sometimes it's a Jewel thread. Her dress and make-up on her last Letterman appearance last September was a 'hot' topic (pun intended) on this list, thus the Jewel content picked up. She mentions in an interview that 3 JewelStock songs are on her next CD, thus the Jewel content picked up. This lists' Jewel-content goes as Jewel goes. Secondly (and related in a way) this list has over 950 subscribers on it now. It was 475 exactly six months ago and in the low 700s as recently as Thanksgiving. 950! That's A LOT of people! (Even thought it is quite evident there are many multiple subscriptions. i.e. many folk subscribe to more than one version of this list) This many people have many interests, not just Jewel. Therefore, inevitably at times the odd topics generate a lot of replies....because they strike a nerve, or because they pique an interest in many folk, or for whatever reason. My overall point? Simple. In my opinion this is normal. Back when I joined this list (last March), the same thing happened at times. I've seen many posts from list veterans longing for the days of last summer....but I got news for them, it wasn't much different really, at least not in my opinion. We had strong Jewel content periods (fueled by JewelStock), and we had dry spells too. Last June thru mid-August (The JewelStock Era as I call it) was the exception, not the rule. Shortly before and after JewelStock, it was quite similar to what it is now. Of course, I can't speak of the days before I joined. However, I know from 'talking' with the list veterans (from WAY back) that this list was MUCH more Jewel-content oriented. That's partially because it was a smaller list, and consisted of real die-hard fans, the pioneers of Jewel fans. She was barely known then. PoY had sold maybe 50,000 albums. It's likely approaching 4 million now. She grew, the list grew....and changed. With the growth of Jewel, comes the growth of this list. Of course, with that growth comes an increase of the number of daily posts. With that increase comes the growth of the number of posts of non-Jewel-content, and also comes the growth of the number of posts of Jewel-content. However, the percentages are nearly the same. Yeah, it may be a bit more Non-Jewel-content (NJC), but with that NJC comes the character of this list, the fiber of it. Although I'll admit *some* of it is downright silly and useless, it's also some of it that has actually built many friendships and has made this list a 'family'. We can talk about Jewel all we want, and we would build friendships too, but we wouldn't get to 'know each other'. It's some of the non-Jewel-content, the sometimes off topic converstions, that help us get to know each other, to make us want to meet each other. Yeah, it could all be done privately, but that would be a two person conversation. If that were the only way, maybe only Crunch, or maybe only Selena and Barry would be going to Liz Clarks' place in three weeks. Instead, becasue of some non-Jewel-content, maybe Liz will have 20 people show up, or maybe 40 like we did at the New Hampshire show last August. Well, I've certainly taken up more than enough time of anyone who has read this far. My overall point is, if you are dismayed my the lack of Jewel talk, stick it out a while longer. Make some friends in the process. Make a point to meet some of us at a Jewel concert, should you be lucky enough to have one near you. If you decide it still ain't for you, maybe try the digest for a while, or maybe just the Jewel-news list. If you want to know how to change to another version of this list, Email me anytime and I'll be glad to help ya. Your fellow Jewel fan and EveryDay Angel, Mike (aka DuckOfPrey on AOL) P.S.
