The school board felt that the teachers were not able to communicate to all the children because their dialect or language (i don't really know if its another language or just a dialect, i can't decide) was different. There was no one who was trying to teach Ebonics in school instead of english. *I disagree. What it is leading to is a declaration of Ebonics as another language. what they were trying to do was help the students who spoke Ebonics to learn "standard english" by translating for them form ebonics to "standard english" *Exactly, by 'translating' from English, to English for students who spoke English. How could that hurt them to be learning standard english? *That is not what said. I said teach them English, so I guess you're inferring something *other than what I had meant. There's the other issue of whether this idea should have been proposed in the first place and that it is a devisive to talk about a seperate langauge for blacks but that really has nothing to do with this argument. *Divisive, eh? I think it is separatist, just like Lewis Farrakhan. >The same thing happens when you teach Mexican immigrants in >Spanish, you hinder their chance to make it, you handicap the >dream. And that is the ultimate heresy. What this country is >supposed to stand for and whatit's actions say about what >it REALLY stands for are laughably dissimilar. Again, i don't see the problem... It'd be pretty dumb to try to teach spanish speakers about american history or engineering in English if they don't know english yet. *You REALLY like arguing with things I didn't say, don't you? The idea is to teach *English while the children are YOUNG as the young brain is more able to grasp a new *language, then teach them whatever they are to be taught. This is, in fact, crucial to *their chances for living whatever dreeam they may have in America. The way to go in my opinion, and in my mom's ( who teaches english as a second language) they need to learn the language before they can fully function in this society. It's amazing how many professors, scientists, and engineers are stuck doing janitorial jobs here in the states till they learn english. * I agree wholeheartedly!!! If you didn't catch that this is exactly what I was saying, *maybe you were reading defensively...;) Just a joke, I meant exactly what you just *wrote. Once they learn the language that's when they start getting chances to do jobs more suited to them. *EXACTLY! I don't know Who you think is perpetrating this... but the language barrier is very large and it's not english speaking peoples' fault that some immigrants speak other langauges. *WHAT?!? Perpetrating what? And when did I say it was the fault of English-speakers *that immigrants spoke other languages? (And since when does the language barrier *speak of its own accord?). Any other words you'd care to put in my mouth? This country stands for what? equal opportunity... some might say this. Well, there isn't exactly that but it's not because of the reasons you state. * So, now you contradict your earlier statement about professors being janitors? Equal *opportunity for those who play by the rules of a still-racist society. Having a thick *accent (from learning a language late maybe?) can harm your chances in this country-- *sad, but true! Hey, you're right, maybe it's because we have a corrupt bunch of *politicians? >Conduct job interviews over the 'net. Fight the power! That'd be nice in as much as you wouldn't know a person's sex age or race, but in some jobs age, and other things like personality and the way a person carries him or herself matters. Actually all jobs are like that. Also if you want to be fair to minorities or immigrants the worst way to do it is to have interviews conducted over the ne. In case you Didn't know the net is a largely upper middle class white male domain. Not that that is a good thing but the cost of a computer isn't spare change... * Pardon my french (racist comment? hardly, I'm part French), Jesus Christ, man. I was *J-O-K-I-N-G (for those who speak 'Ebonics' I was just playin'----sarcasm). IT WAS A *JOKE! Besides if job interviews were done by the net, it would not have to be done by a *terminal from the person's home. If the person didn't have a job, OF COURSE he/she/it *might not have a computer. The net is a glut, comprised in alarming percentage of bored college kids (no offense, I go to college myself, though I net from home). Sorry to spill this to the list, but I figured I should defend myself from this in case anyone didn't read the original post and got the wrong idea. What, are they afraid that they will leak information by >selling them? Well, I used to work at Blockbuster Video where we would get movie posters, and I am sort of running under the assumption (thru friends that work at music places) that the two industries are run similarly. At BBV, the posters we got were technically not owned by BBV, they were owned by the movie companies, and when we took the posters down after a film's release, the posters were to be disposed of by putting them in the dumpster out back. The rule for employees was, "You can take the posters, but if anybody asks, you didn't get them from here." And I'm assuming music is the same way. But I'm just assuming. The first gifts were items such as twigs from sacred groves and were meant as good luck emblems. That soon changed to food, candles and small pieces of jewelry. To the early Church this was frowned upon, because it was a pagan holdover. No one wanted to part with the gift-giving, so later the Church found justification based on the original gift giving of the Magi. Tony T. Well, when you think about it, it's like learning another language all together. These kids are "native speakers" of the dialect now known as "Ebonics", also known as street english. The teachers will teach English like they teach a foriegn language, (i.e. Spanish) using "glosses" (i.e. casa=house, chico=boy, etc.) Studies of teaching English this way has shown that the students *learn* English, but do they *use* it? If a teacher teaches by translation, it's like they're recognizing Ebonics as a respected way of speaking. The students may not actually go out into the real world and speak correct english, they'll probably go back to speaking Ebonics. So what is the purpose there? I'm not one to force my opinions on people, so don't take this like I'm insulting you or your opinions. I think using Ebonics is a good way to help kids learn English, I'm just not sure it's good in the long run. But I'd like to hear other people's opinions! MacOS sucks and even Apple knows that! That's why they tried to buy a small company called "B" so they could use their OS called "BOS". But PowerComputing beat Apple to that. And there is no way that DOS would become the sole OS because there are still some OS/2, Unix, Linux, SunOS, FreeBSD users. Plus, many corporate businesses use WindowsNT which _is_ superior, and it is not dependant on the DOS kernel. The majority of businesses and colleges use either PC or Unix systems. Taking a cue from Jobs' latest success, the computer-animated movie Toy Story, think of it this way: The Mac OS is level-headed Woody, and Nextstep is slickly futuristic Buzz Lightyear. Both must band together to fight off Bill Gates, er, Sid, the nasty kid next door who crafts mutant toys, er, operating systems, out of salvaged parts. - -- PAMELA PFIFFNER - -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 17:53:46 -0500 (EST) From: SDAngelLI@aol.com Subject: Re: Jewel Posters In a message dated 97-01-18 00:01:25 EST, frkarras1@juno.com (Todd A Werner) writes: << Somebody posted to the list last week about having a promotional poster or something, and told me that the bidding was at $50. >> Nobody told me about this auction. Pretty fair... Pretty fair... I use a number of computers in my daily netsploits, but two are my regular hangouts: Power Macintosh 7500 RAM: 32MB/64MB virtual OS: Mac OS System 7.5.5 Processor: PowerPC 601 at 100MHz Video: Macintosh Built-In Video 2MB, 24 bit color at 640x480, 8 bits at higher resolutions, 16/24 bit video capture 7.5 to 30 fps CD-ROM: AppleCD 600i 4x internal Internet connection: 33,600 bps via US Robotics modems on the Mac and terminal server. Also, there are a few people who expressed interest in a means of chatting without having to learn IRC's arcane commands or waiting all night to login to AOL. There are a number of solutions, including developing a MOO, MUCK or MUD (the latter server being better suited to gaming than talk). I'd like to hear other suggestions, but at this time only Unix and Mac solutions can be seriously considered. (My ISP does not operate any Windows 95/NT-based facilities at this time, and any Windows equipment installed will probably be purely for client support.) Also, any Internet-based talk place will be usable with AOL users with Windows version 2.5 and Mac version 3.0 or better. - -- Reverend Angus The Angel Formerly Known As Andrew Vernon avernon@scott.net ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 19:04:06 -0600 From: Andrew Vernon Subject: Re: Forgiving Jewel of her Sins Justin, > Just because we pray for Jewel > sins to be forgiven doesn't mean that God or Jesus forgives > them! Plus, many corporate businesses use >WindowsNT which _is_ superior, and it is not dependant on the DOS >kernel. My first, only and last post on this thread :-) Apple did NOT try to buy Be, Inc.; they investigated purchasing rights to the BeOS so that they could incorporate the multitasking, memory-protected kernel as the basis for Mac OS 8. Be wanted way too much money for their OS, so Apple chose the best-developed, most reliable OS microkernel currently in use -- which happened to be the Mach kernel used by NeXT. The new NeXT-based OS will look very much like current MacOS, including support for System 7 APIs, but will support preemptive multitasking, memory protection and multiple OS personalities simultaneously -- even NT can't do all of those :-) The Mach kernel is currently also in use by Mac MkLinux, and is rock stable. Power Computing did not buy Be, either; they just license the OS as an optional package for their users. BeOS lacks a number of important features present in MacOS, and difficult to add; the NeXT kernel will support these technologies readily -- and of course permit multiprocessing and multiple personalities. Also, it will be a simple step up to POSIX/UNIX compliance. If you don't think this is the future of advanced PC OSes, think again. DOS, btw, is no longer supported at all by Microsoft, and has not been available separately for sale in quite a while. Win95 contains massive amounts of DOS code to ensure backward compatiblity -- but using it in your app robs the system of its memory protection and stability. NT, which has a DOS-like interface available in a window, uses Insignia Solutions' SoftPC to emulate DOS. There is no DOS code in the kernel -- a very good thing. NT, IMHO, is a superior OS saddled with a bulky, imitative user interface. Which was borrowed, almost piece by piece, from the 13-year-old original MacOS and grafted onto Microsoft's hideous Windows 2.0/3.0 API set. I only wish they'd re-written the UI from the ground up when they designed NT. - -- | Greg Dunn | I shut out acceptance so I won't | | GregDunn@aol.com | get hurt; and move on to the next| | gregdunn@indy.net | one who will treat me like dirt. | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Patti Rothberg | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jan 1997 20:42:29 -0500 From: Mike Connell Subject: Name The Tape Contest - Here's All The Entries Listed Hi Y'all, Well, here's all the entries for your viewing pleasure.
