The first is that if we lived in a perfect world, we wouldn't need affirmative action. Unfortunatly, the world is imperfect. For example, we all have been watching the news about the Texico civil rights violations. For those of you who aren't familiar with the story, Texico (the gasoline CO) discrimnated against Africian Americans. In response to a previous post on how affirmative action is wrong and not needed, this is a counter-example in which it is. We live in a society (US) in which every person is suppossed to have an equal right and opportunity. Unfortunatly, that is not the fact. Our government in the early 1700-1960's has passed racist law. An example is the Chinese exclusion acts passed during the Manifest Destiny time period. Among countless other laws that were passed which limited the rights of others. Presently these laws are not in effect but there is still some residue of these monstrous laws. Affirmative action was created to help rectify some of these "bad laws." Some of you may agree with Affirmative action, and some of you may not; but until the world is just, and people don't discriminate against race, color, or creed etc. Affirmative action still have a role in modern day American society. I'm not pro Afirmative action nor am I con, but these are some facts which can be looked up in any history book. Let us all just remember that History will be the judge of us all. In response > to a previous post on how affirmative action is wrong and not needed, > this is a counter-example in which it is. How would state-sponsored discrimination have influenced the minds and hearts of Texaco executives? Granted, Afirmitive Action (AA) is not nessicarily discrimination, but why can't we simply hire the best 'person' for the job? I understand the impact the informal socialization has in the workplace (and in schools!), but where lies the remedy? The less-obvious choice of AA? The watering-down of acedemic standards in general? AA is simply (IMHO) a stop-gap, band-aid of a solution that doesn't address the real roots of racism and discrimination. It is patronizing to say that certain races/genders/ethnicities in our society are incapable of getting work on their own merits. > We live in a society (US) in which every person is suppossed to have an equal > right and opportunity. Unfortunatly, that is not the fact. > Our government in the early 1700-1960's has passed racist law. Definately, but also during that period great and amazing stries were made. For example... After the civil war, blacks were being elected to public offices in majority white voting districts! Socially, being black was becoming less important than your desire to work hard. Certainly in the West and Plains, blacks were a signifigant portion of the population settling the new lands (a much higher percentage than on Dr. Quinn!) White Northerners went to the South to open schools, to provide opportunites for the newly freed slaves. Yes, there were incidents of violence towards these people, but not as much as you are led to believe. BTW - The South itself wasn't 100%, 90%, or even 80% in favor of slavery. Slavery was a tool of rich landowners, who made up approx. 5% of the population, and over 75% of the slaveowners. To the common Southern soldier, the war was about fighting in defence of their homes against a Northern interloper. Most of the racial segregation by law in both public, private, and governmental realms were campaigned for and signed into law by Woodrow Wilson, who, I might add, hosted the KKK as frequent visitors to the White House. He was also present at the first screening of "Birth of a Nation" (I forget the title, i think that's it) a propaganda film of sorts released by the Klan about how evil blacks were. He is quoted in contemporary sources as believing the film finally told the truth, that this was what america needed to be strong, etc... It is widely believed that although he himself was not a member, 5 members of his cabinet as well as the Vice-President were members of the Klan. Anyone know about all the times Wilson used the military to invade Latin America? Anyone know that he sent Marines into Eastern Europe to help resistance fighters in a war against the emerging Communist government? Yep - 30,000 of them. > Affirmative action was created to help rectify > some of these "bad laws." Some of you may agree with Affirmative action, > and some of you may not; but until the world is just, and people don't > discriminate against race, color, or creed etc. Affirmative action still > have a role in modern day American society. Yeah, I agree that the world is unjust, and that we need to fix it - but for us to _stop_ after AA, to only go this far, is hypocritical at best. We need to do better than this - AA doesn't solve the problems. - -Jeffrey- - -- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- jeffm@genghis.com http://luna.genghis.com/jeff/index.htm - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jan 1997 15:24:30 +0100 From: Alexander Stamou Subject: Re: NJC: something to think about (fwd) American patriots beware. Sure, it's probably better to live there than in most eastern european countries right now, for instance, but as I said -or should have said- there are LOTS of poor people there too, right? In response > to a previous post on how affirmative action is wrong and not needed, > this is a counter-example in which it is. This is becoming a legend not unlike the Internet Virus hoaxes. To the best of my knowledge, the "violations" were alleged because of some purportedly racist remarks made in a meeting. A tape of the meeting revealed that the people in question were referring to certain of their employees as "jellybeans." Of course, the assumption was made that this was a racist comment, and an investigation was started. It turns out that Texaco managers are instructed to refer to ALL of their employees as "jellybeans" when talking about numbers or benefits, or even work groups. This was instituted to avoid accidental use of derogatory nouns or descriptives. Well, a few action groups got wind of the investigation and spread it to the news. Even though review of the tapes in question completely exonerated the managers, there was enough adverse publicity by that time for Texaco to settle with the "injured parties" on the advice of their lawyers. The only person who has actually been charged with any wrongdoing was the person who improperly acquired the tape and handed it over... I find it reprehensible and saddening that even though there was no actual evidence of racism on the tape, the company decided to throw money at the problem and dismiss the managers involved, rather than publicly exonerate them and risk charges of a cover-up. These days, it seems easier to sic the lawyers at each other than try to overcome the pressure of public opinion, however misguided. Sorry for the rant; it merely annoys me that our society feels it necessary to legislate (again) things which are already adequately covered by anti-discrimination laws. If these laws were enforced firmly, the need for affirmative action would be minimized. I'm usually firmly libertarian :-) about laws, but this aspect of our litigous society irritates me severely. I'll climb back into my hole now, and refrain from further political comments. (Note to any Iraqi/German EDA's, should they exist: I am not saying you are racist. I am willing to bet you aren't) Racism is healing. It will never go away, because there will always be undereducated people who must blame someone who is doing better than they are. If they can't find any better way to blame, they find color, religion, sex, etc. But, though the drum-beaters would have you think otherwise (and living overseas, it's probably only them you hear), racism in the US today is far less prevelant than it was even 20 years ago. That's kind of what it's coming to isn't it, this thread.....???? This thread will cause nothing but problems and it won't stop unless we each make a conscious effort to not contribute. It is easier than calling the cops (?) and funner :) than just not buying from them. You go in that dang record store and you take a deep breath, and you BELT out Angel Standing By at the TOP of your lungs! :) Then run home to your 'puter and tell us about it! So I went back to work and produced this more faithful version. 'Twas interesting listening to the two versions of the song off of Rare Angels and the JewelStock tape; the improvement is noticeable. Thanks to the concerned reader, whose identity I shall keep anonymous in case my mother finds out he called me a wimp (psst, it was Tom Proven at Horter3@aol.com!). Just kidding; Tom and I have had a playful sadomasochistic relationship ever since I joined the list almost a year ago. Doesn't mean I've called off the hitmen, though. ;) CGN, Inebriated Llama - ---------- "Angel Needs A Ride" From "Saint Doug: San Diego Local Music Soundtrack" and July 18, 1996, live performance in Bearsville, New York.
