Well this has turned out to be an INCREDIBLE day. I work out at the Los Angeles Airport every day, photographing celebrities that get on and off the New York Flights at American Airlines....and you'll never guess who came off Flight #19 today. Yup. My very own angel, JEWEL. She was returning from the Grammy Nominations held yesterday in N.Y. My heart was POUNDING when I saw her coming off the flight. As you know, I've photographed her before, but at events where I was trapped in a media section. But this was up close and personal. She looked absolutely beautiful, but the first words out of her mouth were "Oh guys, please, no pictures. I look horrible." I obeyed her wishes, so have no shots of her alone. But my friend, another photographer, pleaded with her to pose WITH ME, telling her that I'm her biggest fan and talk about her day and night! So at least I'll have a souvenir. Plus I got an autograph. But wait, there's more......She was carrying her guitar, and a small little tote luggage. I asked her if she needed help carrying her stuff but she declined. Then I asked her if she'd mind if I walked along and spoke with her and she said "Sure, C'mon!" Again, my heart was pounding, I could feel that my face was flushed. My mind was racing through what should I say/what should I ask/what I should do/what I shouldn't do. It was like a dream, really. We headed down the ecsalator, and then she got on one of the moving walkways. I thought I'd be crowding her by getting on it with her, so I just walked along side, BACKWARDS, the whole length of the terminal. The BIG NEWS....THE NEW ALBUM WON'T BE OUT UNTIL JULY. I didn't ask her why. Off the top of my head I asked if RACE CAR DRIVER was going to be on it. She said she didn't think so; that she was looking to put some "FUN" stuff on it, and that it was really hard trying to narrow the selection down to 12 tracks. I said I thought RCD was "FUN", and that I had just heard it for the first time a few weeks ago (on the tape that YOU sent me). Then I just went on about YOUR tape, and how it was the first time I had ever heard an entire live concert, with the birthday celebration and all, and how much of a different experience/mood it was from PIECES OF YOU. Told her that I just bought my first computer a month ago, and have basically used it to download JEWEL pictures, articles, reviews, ETC. I asked her if she ever read the newsgroup, and was surprised when she said she "didn't own a computer. But aren't they a nice bunch of people?" I said "Yeah, but lately they seem a little preoccupied with your resemblence to the girl in JERRY MAGUIRE!" She laughed, and said she's been getting a lot of that lately, ever since Rosie (O'Donnell) brought it up. I brought up the Howard Stern show that was on today, but she hadn't heard it since her flight left so early. Of course I congratulated her on the 2 Grammy nominations, and said I'd stayed up all night trying to catch the video clips on all the stations. She laughed "Did you get any good ones?" "I got them ALL", I replied! There were probably 200 people all around us, but I never saw them. All I saw was Jewel, about 10 inches away from me. I had on my sunglasses (she didn't), and was really checking out every detail on her face, absorbing every little nook and cranny, and even without any make-up she was gorgeous, ocassionally tucking her hair behind her ear, and never speaking above a girlish whisper. She bypassed the baggage claim area, since all she had was her carry-on and guitar, and suddenly we were out at the curb. She hesitated, and seemed to be looking around for someone to pick her up, so I thought I'd better wrap it up. "You don't need a lift anywhere do you", I asked, fantasizing about her sitting next to me in the car! She smiled and said "No thanks, but aren't you sweet." I wished her good luck at the American Music Awards this week, and at the Grammy Awards next month, thanked her for allowing me to "chew her ear off" and shook her hand. We exchanged HAPPY NEW YEARS, and I walked away, on Cloud 9. Anyway, "MY DAY WITH JEWEL" by Bob Scott (c)1997 All Rights Reserved! ****P.S. Please put TOWER RECORDS on other side of tape. As some of you may have noticed, I've been having problems with the whole AAN program. My BIGGEST problem has been getting people to adopt... which I can totally understand. I know that it seems like a much bigger commitment than it is. So.. after careful thinking carried out in the past two days ( I'm a bit spontaneous ) I decided that AAN is going to be a mite bit re-vamped. AAN used to work this way - I would pair up a Newbie with an individual adoptive parent... a parent would sign up to adopt only one Newbie. They would each get a little bio of the other person , and I would try to group them according to where they lived... which tended not to work too well when I just paired people by the fact that they lived in countries OTHER than the US ( okay, I'm an idiot :) ). This is how AAN will NOW work : There will be a set of parents (I'm hoping for 5 or 6 ) that will be permanent parents. Any time a Newbie wants to be adopted, they will be "given" to one of these parents. Everything else will work the same. So, in some sort of conclusion... I need 2 things :). 1) Newbies ! If you sent me an survey for AAN but never got a parent,I'm sorry I'm a dummyhead ( or, as Tori would say, "I'm SUCH a ding-a-ling" ). Write to me w/ "AAN" as the subject and remind me gently... I still have all the surveys. If you're a newbie and you're feeling a bit lost on the list, of would like to have a specificperson to clue you in on all the Jeweliness around here... write to me with "AAN Newbie" in the subject. I'll send you a survey to fill out, and as soon as I get it back, you'll be adopted by a possibly wiser, not-so-possibly older EDA who truly cares about you (okay, so the last part is just hope ). But no matter what, it's a really good idea to get adopted here. 2) I NEED PARENTS ! I know of a few of you who wouldn't mind taking on more than one Newbie. Those of you who are already parents know it's really easy work. I'm looking for 5 or so... but I'll take as many as I can get, and if I can't get any, I'll do it all by myself :). No pressure. But I know some of you have big hearts and would really be great for this, five or so of you which I happened to see last week... ( not that I'm naming ANY names...). IF you would like to be a parent, please send me a letter with the subject "AAN parent". If you're already a parent, I've got your survey already, so you won't have to do another one- just write to me so I can make sure you're still up for it :). If you weren't a parent before, mail me and I'll send you a survey to fill out, too. See ? That's really easy. I'm sure it'll make all the Newbies much happier. You guys rock, I love you all :) Oh- and I get to adopt my boyfriend. It's only fair. To some people this is not a problem. It *is* nice to have email and browser rolled into one. To put it succinctly: Netscape Mail lacks a full complement of features. This is what prompts many people (including myself, should I decide to be impolite) to say it sucks. Netscape itself does not. Also, they have a new version of the emailer, called messenger, that comes with their communicator package and probably will be better done. If you are fine with netscape mail, go ahead and use it. Many philosophers have extolled the simple life. If you don't like Netscape mail, it's also simple: don't use it :) For those of you who are unhappy with netscape mail, especially if you want filtering and other niceties, instead of harshing, here are some alternatives: Eudora Pro 3.0: One of the two top Windows world email programs. Pegasus Mail: The other one. The difference? Eudora costs, Pegasus is freeware. Otherwise I hear they are pretty comparable. I know there is Eudora for the mac world. I don't know if there is a comparable emailer for free. I myself use MR/2 for OS/2. So if you don't like Netscape mail, just get another emailer. That's what is so neat about the internet.
