Some of the West Coast EDAs already have seen this banner, as I had it made just in time for the San Diego Jingle Ball a few weeks ago, which Jewel had to miss because she was sick. I plan to get posters made, so every EDA who wants one can have one. I can't draw it on my email, but I'll describe it briefly: The banner is three feet long, two feet wide, on a baby blue vinyl fabric. It has "EDAs" (w/o quotation marks) in white letters across the top. Right under that, in quotation marks, in lower-case red letters, it says "'maintaining our innocence'." Under that is Phil's copyrighted Jewelstock angel (with copyright notice attached, just as on the shirt), large and replete with white wings and body, halo, and Big Blue. This version of Big Blue has stars on it, based on the tale that Phil told me about how Jewel had said at Jewelstock that his design was perfect except for the stars and how She had then hand drawn them in on his shirt! (Lucky Phil!) (Angel credit also goes to Tom Proven, based on an early sketch which he sent to Phil and which is downloadable somewhere on the net). Under the Angel, in large fuchsia block letters, it says "JEWEL" (w/o quotation marks). I was telling the story of the banner to Steve, Stinky's Parents and Jewel. (Jewel remembered putting the stars on Phil's shirt design). I then asked Jewel if she would sign the banner, which she readily agreed to do. I *just happened* to have a broad-tipped Silver Sharpie with me, which I pulled out and handed to Jewel, asking Her to sign it "as large as she can." She did, right to the right of her name; she also dated it (1/3/97). It's beautiful. I thanked her, and she thanked me. Then, I looked around for Igor. He was nowhere to be seen. I turned back to Jewel to continue our conversation. To be continued.... Larry ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 02:00:01 -0500 From: GraywolfLA@aol.com Subject: Swaddled in Bliss, Part VII (contact continued) Ok, back to the banner. Jewel looked at the "maintaining our innocence" slogan, and She asked me if I thought that song should be on the next cd (I'm assuming she meant "Innocence Maintained"). I said that I love that song, but that I love all Her songs (actually, I do like that one a whole lot and hope She uses it on the record!). I said that I had chosen that as a slogan, and loved it for an EDA slogan, as it reflects her philosophy as well as the attitude of the EDAs. Jewel agreed enthusiatiacally. She said, "yes. It reflects the fact that we can physically manifest thought and that we should have hope and faith in what we think, because we'll then create that." I said "yes, that's it exactly, I've heard you say that many times, and that's what I believe you and the EDAs are all about. I then told Jewel that 1997 will be a very big year for her, and an important one. I told her, "you have a very important mission." (I wanted to talk more about that; oh well, sometimes it be that way....) I said that it is easy to be overcome by being in the limelight, and that she should remember that the EDAs are here to support her every step of the way. Jewel said she knows and appreciates that, and that she loves the EDAs. I said "we love you, too." The band was starting to come back in, and poeple behind me were kind of "ahem"ming for a chance to talk to Jewel, too. But I wasn't ready to quit just yet, although I sensed my time was about to end soon. To be continued.... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 02:28:06 -0500 From: GraywolfLA@aol.com Subject: Swaddled in Bliss, Part VIII (end of contact, sniff, sniff) Ok, back to Java Joe's. Knowing that my time was running out, I said to Jewel, "one last thing; could I touch your nose?" She said "sure. You've gotta do it the right way, though." She then demonstrated the technique on me: index finger and middle finger on either side of the nose, facing down; thumb underneath the tip of the nose, facing up. Gentle tweak. We had it going SIMULTANEOUSLY!!!! (I'm sorry for shouting, but I just can't help it, that's the way I felt then, and that's the way I feel now.). Jewel then showed the technique to Stinky's father (I THINK it was Stinky's father), who seemed pretty interested in it. I said bye, she said bye, we smiled, and I turned to look for Igor, who was nowhere to be found. Nancy came up to me and asked me what we had talked about; I promised to post it to the list (which I guess I just did!). I'm gonna let Igor tell where he was and why we have no photos to document this event, because I don't want to misstate what happened to him, as I was *otherwise engaged* at the time (and NOT in the sense Igor implied; his hyperbolic license is in danger of being suspended). I'll give him only one chance to tell the truth this time, and if it varies from the evidence I gathered post mortem, I'll have to give my version. The rest of the story is epilogue; that's the whole Jewel part. I'll try to wrap it up in one final post. To be continued.... Gerrit, I don't know what you mean by uuencoded. I never understood how people had dreams about Jewel until this morning when we got back from the Rugburns concert around five in the morning. I woke up at 9 and I can remember only bits and pieces. I recall Jewel talking to Nancy and me and then I see her sneaking up to a hot dog stand where there is all this money. The next thing I know the money is gone and Jewel is too. Now the whole seaside down is looking for her and the money, the police too. Somewhere in the dream Jewel arranged to meet us so we could sneak her out of town. We tried several times but there was always someone around. So we finally set up another meeting spot by a boardwalk and retaining wall. Someone comes running up and Jewel takes off running into the ocean to get away. That's where I woke up. Hard for me to figure what it means. I never dream about famous people. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Jan 1997 22:10:06 -0800 From: wrdavis@ite.net (Katherine Davis) Subject: JC: Jewel on Sunday night's 120minutes on mtv Just a reminder in case you've forgotten... mtv's 120minutes is doing a special on in studio preformances. I give him the 10$ > and he doesn't search me! But what is ironic about this is that at the time > Jewel was playing in the mall when I left the rest room! I know what it feels like Justin. It has happened to me three times. Once with a gun and twice with a knife. The incidents happened during attempted holdups in one of my former record stores in NY. All three times I wrestled with the thieves. The gunman got away. The first guy with a knife got held until the the police came. He was released on bail only a short while latter. The third time I was more creative. I'll spare you all the details but I forced the robber to take off all his clothes as I pointed an unloaded weapon at him. I did leave him his shoes. Then I told him I would shot him if he didn't run and leave the store. This was on 72nd and Broadway in NYC. Only a few minutes latter he was back covered in a blanket being held by two cops. When I told them I had no idea why he undressed, the cops took him away screaming and yelling, to a hospital for mental evaluation. As he was taken away, he threatened to be back. Now the reason for my story is not to recommend anyone act the same foolish way during a robbery. Your life and health are ore important than anything that a robber can take. Justin, I just hope that the one thing he didn't steal is your trust in your fellow man. Now you know what it is like to be robbed. In your very next post, you open your heart with an offer to share by taping some Jewel music off of a soundtrack. You offer with the best EDA hearfelt reasons so please don't take this as a flame. You are robbing all the artists on that ST of their rightfully deserved royalties. You are also robbing Jewel. I am sure this is not your intention. Jeff Wasilko said it best when he said "We have a legal and moral obligation to Jewel." Be guided by your conscience and do the right thing. Sure its only a little bit you are robbing but every little bit hurts. Even the Jewel song that you heard played in the mall after your robbery, is payed for by a fee imposed on the mall by ASCAP. Igor ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 03:21:00 -0500 From: GraywolfLA@aol.com Subject: Swaddled in Bliss, Part IX -- Epilogue Back to Java Joe's. The second set is about to start, and I have found Igor OUTSIDE the building, chatting away with the Ocean Beach City Council (for any of you who don't know Ocean Beach, which I didn't before a month ago, I am referring to the street people who look like they just got there, on foot, from Berkeley and the East Village in the 60's; that is a really charming thing, in my opinion, and on any OTHER night, I woulda been out there talking to them, too). The set gradually gets more raucous, and the Rugburns' more colorful storysongs start to get sung. Jewel has left, I don't know exactly when or how. About an hour later, it dawns on me what had happened, and I started to hug Igor and yell in his ear, "Itouchedhernoseshetouchedmynose[repeatsixtimes]" Then, the adrenaline rush starts to wear off, and I am getting sleepy.... Good thing I have my throne in front of the soundboard to sit in. Igor says to me, "how do we get Jewel to appear at a show again? I say, I've got 2 ideas: first, I publicly predict that she WON'T show up, and second, we send Jamie there, because Jamie was at both shows this week that Jewel came to, and she's obviously a Jewel magnet. (Imagine my delight in seeing THAT theft of idea floating in the ether upon arising this morning and reading Igor's post, which, BTW, I can prove he made before I even had my boots off that early morning before sleep). Steve says, "I'd like to sing a song I wrote inspired by Cindy Lee Berryhill, who's here tonight, called "Morning Song." Of course, he was making that up entirely, which anyone who listens to Rugburns lyrics would certainly know and understand fully). I've got my own theories about who inspired that song, but that's yet another post for another day. After "Morning Song," Steve called my friend Cindy Lee up to sing, and she delighted the crowd with "High Jump" (which Steve said was his niece's [?] favorite song, and with "The Ballad of Jane and John" (which is one of my favorite songs). By now, I'm truly swaddled in bliss; I was feeling as though the evening had been personally designed for me somewhere in the same area code as heaven, as a sort of consolation prize and reminder that sometimes really nice and special things do happen. After Cindy Lee sang, she spoke for a while with EDA Eric Garske. By 2:30 a.m., I had run out of the ability to think of anything but sleep, and after Igor told Eric we'd meet him for breakfast at some Denny's some place, I forced him to take me back to the compound, where I retired on his sofabed, all swaddled in bliss. Eric's probably still at the Denny's waiting for us and for a waiter. I woke up and had breakfast with Igor's family and disciples, and we called Alan Bershaw to give him a report. I headed out soon after, to return to my never-to-be-quite-the-same mundane existence. All in all, quite a magical day for me. See, I told everyone it's gonna be a great year! tty'all later, Larry "Swaddled in Bliss" Greenfield ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Jan 1997 04:26:33 EST From: bhartford3rd@juno.com (Bruce D Hartford III) Subject: JC: member me?? I'm - -assuming- the majority of you aren't familiar with my living status, which is located in the heart of America; Omaha, Nebraska (YYYEEEEAAAA HUSKERS!!!!) Now I'm not stuck up (not that that's the only people that fly first class) and believe me, you, that's a good thing because if I where to inquire about that to the pilot I would've probably heard something like, "hey, ya, that's about when I dropped out!" (i.e., first grade,.. school,... ok, your all smart. I have faith in ya) Three hour layover in L.A. today, on the way back. They arrested a guy at my gate with a very thick British accent. He was ranting and raving that God had sent him to kill this poor ol' baggage handler. Pooor lady cried and cried she was soo scared (they let her go home). All right, it was bad, that's all I really needed to say (god knows I could go on-and-on for hours). Once again be sure to insert your pity here. I'm back on the list tonight for anyone who might care to know and I brought with me a little Jewel content. Of course given that I haven't been here it is entirely within the realm of possibility that someone might have already publicized the Jewel content I wish to share with you but screw it. I found this out on my own and I'm letting yall know about it!!! You might remember me posting that I play the guitar quite often. Well, while in California I stopped in at an old music house that I use to visit and chatted with the keeper for a bit. I mentioned that while I hadn't seen him in a while I still played guitar religiously and have developed an interest in Jewel. He noted that she sounded familiar to him but couldn't place her at the moment. Later in the day he called me with recollection and mentioned that he had received a guitar transcription book that contained WWSYS. Of course everyone (who plays guitar and likes Jewel) knows that song but this transcription was different for two reasons. One was that it is exceptionally detailed from the album. For any buffs out there that like to copy ever minute detail, this is your tool. The second reason this book was different was because of it's rarity at the time. It hadn't yet been released to the public. Unfortunately I'm betting this no longer stands but I'll always know in my heart I had it first! I'll admit everything. First I want to say a few things about Larry. In my last letter there was an error, this was the 4th time I have met Larry. Every single time I met him, he came bearing gifts. At the last meeting at the Cindy show at Java Joe's, he even gave a tape to a complete stranger that I had befriended. That act of random kindness had a payback for me. Baxter(the new friend) sent me a discontinued and very rare Cindy Lee Berryhill CD. Free, as a returned act of random kindness set as an example by Larry. When he came to my home on Friday, he was carrying a pot of beautiful live pink flowers for Kathy. Kathy was very moved and gave Larry a very sincere hug. Watch those hands Larry. When Larry left the next day, we gave each other a big hug. Kathy kiddingly said that we make a nice couple. He is definately a friendship I am happy to have made and will do my best to continue it. Even though I am skipping ahead I need to tell you that this was the second time this weekend that Larry hugged me. Almost an hour after meeting Jewel, something came over Larry. I was standing next to him and he suddenly and without warning, grabbed me and started hugging me. At first I thought he was trying to tackle me and I wasn't going to go down easy. Then just as suprising was Larry kissing me on my neck. He looks at me with this strange look and screams out, "She tweeked my nose and I tweeked hers." The reality of what transpired an hour ago had suddenly hit him. Since Larry is a lawyer, it is only fair that I tell you that my witness, Erick Garske, can verify these events. One thing I now need to do is apologize to Larry. I broke a cardinal rule. Never, never tell people what happens in the privacy of ones bedroom. Even though it only involved Larry and a feather bed, no harm was done to it, except a little drull. It has been said that the truth will set you free. So it is time for me to admit why Larry was backstage meeting Jewel without me. Mr. Big-Mouth Igor suddenly lost the ability to speak. Mr. I Fear No One Igor suddenly started to tremble at the first sight of Jewel. As I tried to speak, only air came out. What if she wanted to tweek my nose? (and anyone that has seen it knows that she would want to). I'm a grown man. Vanessa is four years older than Jewel. Larry already had a crazed look on his face. How could Jewel face two crazed EDAs at once. I didn't want to have Jewel see me like this. What I did was run with my tail between my legs and went outside for fresh air. After feeling a little better, I knew that Larry was going to need my support. How was he going to deal with this tramatic moment alone. When I went back in, he was nowhere to be found. Later on that night as I was walking towards the java bar, Jewel was walking right towards me. She had her jacket on and this met it would be my last chance to say hello. We made eye content and she smiled. I opened up my hand to prepare to shake hands and introduce myself. My hand wouldn't raise and no words came out of my mouth. I just stood there in shock with my mouth wide open as she walked past me. I am sorry that I let all of you down. Most of the roll of pictures were taken of her performing. Larry at one point lost the camara. He found it back where he was talking to Jewel. Can you tell how crazed everyone must have been. What a special night. Wow! That's so cool--just sometimes she's full of it...he was at z100's jingle ball and did nothing for me or her. Could this mean backstage passes (praying to myself)????? I kept asking her to ask him if he knew her and she finally did (the day after Irving Plaza) and she called me and was like oopps he could of got us backstage if we told him. I could have killed her. I'd like to get really excited , more then I am, but sometimes she's full of shit. But ED would fit perfectly to the upper left of it. Lemme try to draw it for you. THe "W"s make up the wings, the "A"s make up the "A". The "E" and "D" are what we can embroider on them. OK, Jewel was mentioned in two articles in today's LA Times "Calendar" section... I have an idea on a design that we could use for a hat. It's a sketch Jewel did for me, I scanned it, took out the background color, and post it here... http://www.ultranet.com/~kendrick/eda.htm I am not sure if we need to get her permission to use it but it's an idea... ~Ted ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jan 1997 17:03:32 -0500 From: "Terrence R. Number One: I looked, and I LIKE THIS SKETCH, it's nice. Number Two: I think it would be wrong to use it without her permission, but at the same time, we could always ask... (it's not like we were planning on selling them for profit...) Number Three: Unfortunately, because of the way the lines bleed outwards (in other words, they aren't solid lines everywhere), Finding a machine that can embroider that design would cost more than usual simply because the lines are complex.... However, that would make a great design for a shirt.... of course, the hat's still POSSIBLE.... Anyways, just a few of my thoughts on the subject.... Thanks! - Terrence R.
