I'm a relatively new Jewel fan- having purchased her cd based solely on the recommendation of #indigo-girls (IRC) friends and having no clue who she was. Had to fill that darn Columbia House committment, you see. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to discover this talented lady and I hope to hear more and more from her. I do have one question... I'm not sure how many of those subscribed are in Canada but I am (I'm in Saint John, New Brunswick if anyone cares... which you shouldn't because it's a pathetic place) and I'm wondering if Jewel ever tours anywhere in Canada? I'd love to see her live but good concerts in my neck of the woods are few and far between. Those who do come to Canada tend to stick to Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal as though the country ended eastbound with Quebec. I've been known to travel to worthy shows, though (hello all you great people from the Dar Williams mailing list who know my tales of adventure!) and I think Jewel would be worth the effort. I love the live songs on PoY. I've heard nothing but praise for this mailing list so here's to happy posting in '97! I know that we all have the bit of being Jewel fans to pull us together, but I wanna find some people with more in common. Let me start this off we a little talking about myself: I'm and 18 year old that is miserable in a horrid town that he has lived in his intier life (that'll drive anyone a little nuts ;]). I was raised in a family that is full of racist amongst other things, so I get the neat honer of being the black sheep of the clan just caus I'm not. At the moment I am just getting by with a well paying, part-time job at a local (well sorta, it's about 40 minutes away) Marriot hotel (I get to be a banquit server. Not a bad job at all. I get to meet and watch all sortsa people, and that is somthing I think all writers should do). I pay the bills and then have very little so spear, but I've always had little ways of getting things when I fell I really need to. So I work, and in my spare time I do my best to write (ohhhhhh sh*t... spare time = hobbie. Guess I'll just have to remedy thst soon ;]). I write with hopes of one day being able to do it for a living (after that all I can ask for is a grop of fans as great as you people ;]). Ok, that's plenty about me. Now, I was playing around with my Lanuch CD that has Jewel on it and was listening to the part where she talks about JewelStock. At one point she says somthing about how people drove from places like Canada and Missouri. I was like "Missouri? Really?". So I'm just wondering... any EDA's from Missouri (or even Kansas)? Also, I was wondering if there are any other people out there out there are writers of anything other then poetry (nothing against poetry, but I know that alot of you are out there). I personaly write novels, short stories, scripts (you know, what movies are made from), and poetry. Well, if you'r in Missour (or Kansas) and/or are a writer, I'd like to hear form you. Seeya all. - -Ashe (ignor the typos) Mayfair ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 2 Jan 1997 23:02:04 -0700 (MST) From: Chopped Liver Subject: NJC: Madeleine Peyroux Just following up a little. A while back I mentioned that Madeleine Peyroux's debut CD was reviewed in Launch 10. Launch is great, BTW, because they include clips of 3-4 tunes from each CD reviewed. Anyway, the review was enough to convince me to buy this CD. I'm listening to it now for the second time and thuroughly enjoying it. I am convinced this 22 year old lady has a great future. She sings mostly jazz and blues including some clasic country blues and sone original compositions. Her voice is very mature for her age, producing some real eddy blue-notes. Another very surreal quality of her voice is that on some songs she sounds just like Billie Holiday! Especially on Was I? and her own song Hey Sweet Man (reminicient of My Man by Billie). Anyway, for those of you who are into the female voice outside of the rock/alternative genre, give Madeleine's Dreamland a try. You won't be hard pressed to find similarities to Jewel's lyricism. Also, take a look at Atlantics web site (http://www.antlantic-records.com). The background they give on Madeleine is also similar to Jewel's. She was street singing in Paris before she was sixteen.
