Recently someone posted asking about how to get bootlegs. I wrote back and told him not to buy bootlegs, but to instead get copies of stuff that other people had. then some person wrote me a nasty letter and posted it to all of you at the same time, acting as if I had asked for the bootlegs, and telling me that newbies, let me make that "fucking newbies", should just wait for the tapes, because you have to be careful what you send out. Being as how I didn't do anything, I didn't really appreciate his post. Anyway i just wanted all of you to know that i hadn't asked for the tapes, someone else did. I'm not sure why I'm writing this. Maybe because of the time of year. Maybe because I've stayed up too late and I'm getting punchy. But I'm doing it. Sorry. Just ignore it. Six years and one week ago I fell in love with someone. Fell is the operative word here. It wasn't a consious act. It wasn't gentle. I can tell you the exact moment it happened and it physically jolted me, like slipping on the ice. We were at the company Christmas party, she and I and a few hundred others. We were standing around talking and eating the finger food and having a generally good time. Wine was a factor. She has a good sense of humor and was coming up with some good quips. "I'm really thirsty", she said suddenly. "Isn't there any water in this place?" She then spotted the ice sculpture on one of the buffet tables. "I guess I could climb up on the the table and suck the dolphin." Well, given our happy mood and alcohol content, this was about the funniest thing we'd ever heard. We were almost falling over with laughter. Then our eyes met and I did fall - in love. I actually thought, "God, I'm in love with her". Without going into details, I'll say that because of many factors in both our lives it would have been a dissaster if I even mentioned my affection to her. But, as we worked daily in the same offices, it was nearly impossible for me to contain it. Well, it was impossible but I had to let all this intensity out some where and it came out in all the wrong places. I became manic-depressive. For weeks I'd brood over the situation, then I'd be the life of the party for a few weeks. I lost 45 pounds in 6 months and exercised obsessively. I couldn't concentrate on anything an could barely work. For two years I was in a completely confused state. It was like being abducted by aliens and then returning to find that there had been an imposter in my place. But I had that imposters memories. And I still loved her. I did some really stupid things and made a general nuisence of myself. But I discovered who my real friends were and who I could trust. It was a very tough time and I strained relations with every friend, co-worker and relative I had. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I look back on those first two tortuous years with great fondness. No matter how much pain they produced I cannot regret them. You see, I still love her with an intensity and completeness that is beyond comprehension. The great joy I feel in this ebbs and flows like the tide and keeps me nearly seasick with emotions. And though we have gone our own ways and I almost never see her, she is in my heart still. She forms my soul and shapes my life. It feels at once silly and noble - I will love her to the end and she will never know it. Every year about this time I'm like this. I go to the Christmas party and see the ice sculptures. The unstoppable events of the last six years march before me again and I am reduce to wondering how I could have made it different and knowing I could't. Chopped Liver I always thought the worst questions were those I couldn't answer. Theremin's decision was to say "f*ck you" to us, Jewel's wishes and the implicit honor agreement on each and every JS tape -- "This is a non-profit project produced by fans, for fans of Jewel. It is not intended for sale! Please keep it that way!" Seems that your friend's honor had its price, and it was $500. I imagine he'd bend over and grab his ankles for not much more, and might sell YOU out for even less. Folks running the original tape tree were offered tenfold that amount by bootleggers, and every time they sent the clowns home empty-handed. Anyone who has excuses to make for this bush-league Judas should keep that in mind. Newbies have been hurt by his actions, not ours. I wish I had written earlier when this thread first started. I can't find the original letter but I think it was from Mike Connell. Someone responded to his post without understanding or caring what Mike had to say. They also totally misrepresented Mike's good intentions. What resulted has been an avalanche of responses to the post that started from the newbie. It was like a bad rumour that kept getting worse. None of the people that have been here a long time have a dislike for newbies. On the contrary, they seem to welcome new blood. I'm a newbie myself. I have only been on the list since May 96'. In that short time I made some good friends. I also made some enemies. A few of my letters I wish I could take back. For the most part, the EDAs don't judge you based on one letter. Everyone has a bad day. If you look at Angel's posts from today, you may find something very interesting. She posted a very angry letter filled with profanity. It only took her 25 minutes to write an apology and 3 minutes more to further defend her position. Not all of us have the writing skills of a Harris. So if your point isn't correctly understood at first, send another letter. If it means you have to blow some steam first, try to do what Angel did. This media isn't easy to use for all of us. However, it should be fun and rewarding. A good public fight can occasionally be OK as long as everyone can still shake hands when the fight is over. If you are new and want to make friends, don't start out by walking into the list carrying two big empty shopping bags and yelling "where's the tapes, give me tapes, I want the tapes." First day you move in, don't come over and ask to borrow the lawn mower. And if the first person you ask for a dance turns you down, don't scream at them and ask them if they think their shit don't stink. If you hang around long enough, you will see that there is plenty of angelfood for all of us. You will get yours. I know there are people that only trade DATs. DATs are tape but I think they last much longer than regular cassette tape. Minidisc's sound quality is near CD. Its not as good as DATs but comes really close. Minidisc is also good for storage. Sony is the main proponent of minidisc so it might catch on in the future. Whichever you choose, if you are considering to buy portable DAT or minidisc recorder, prepare to spend $500+ and get a good mic.
