And those with a crush on Steve Poltz, prepare to be very, very, jealous. Oh yeah: ADULT LANGUAGE, CONTENT. :-) Partly because Toni has turned me into a huge Rugburns fan, and partly because I felt badly that she wasn't able to attend an over-21 show, I committed to attending the Rugburns concert at the Vogue this evening. I wasn't sure what size crowd to expect, so I went to the Vogue before the ticket office closed and made sure there were tickets still available. They were, and as a bonus, the staff was listening to the local "alternative" radio station where Steve P. & co. were being interviewed. So they were in town; that was a relief. I puttered around in Broad Ripple until a crowd started to form. Ten minutes before 'doors open', there was nary a soul in line. The 32F temperature and light snow flurries may have had something to do with that... Anyway, I claimed first in line barely five minutes before showtime -- a new record, I think. There were 10-15 people in line when the doors actually opened. I had no problem finding a nice table near the front, and chatted with the folks next to me while watching some very well done manga movie on the video screen. The first band up was a Bloomington group called the Sugar Freaks; they were not bad -- a little like Chuck Marten, but IMHO less tuneful. Lots of energy from the two ladies on bass and lead/vocal, and a competent drummer. After their set, I noticed that the Rugburns merchandise was being set up. I went to buy Toni and me a couple of T-shirts, and the lady running the concession was very nice -- we talked for a minute or two. Suddenly I felt a hand grip my arm and I turned around. It was Neil, the drummer from Toni's band. Right behind was petite Sharron, the guitarist/vocalist and his fiancee. They both grabbed me and hugged me (it had been a few weeks since we talked last) and invited me to join them up front for the concert. I did, of course. With ear plugs firmly in place, I stood at stage center, front row as Steve and the guys came out. They were cheerful, nay, manic in their upbeat mood. Turns out this was the final concert of the tour; their next gig will be the annual New Year's Eve in San Diego. Steve invited everyone in the Vogue to come and stay at his apartment on the beach after the concert: "There's plenty of room on the floor." They played most everything off "Taking the World by Donkey", plus "Skyfuckingline of Toronto" and "I Hate Fucking Christmas" (wonder why I remember those?) and a handful of cover tunes. Way too much energy. Every 15-20 minutes, one of the waitresses (yes, they were all female) would bring a round of Jim Beam on stage and hand out little cups to Steve, John, and Stinky. Steve tossed his back, then threw the cup on the floor. I retrieved the cup for Toni. Stinky tossed his back and then sprayed it nicely into the air, where it misted around him. He grinned and spat on the floor. Stinky is weird. John drank the first one or two, then handed half of them to various members of the audience afterward. Steve insisted on thanking the waitress for her gift; once he took about a minute to thank her, while John grabbed his one-use camera and snapped blackmail shots. Steve played a beat-up Taylor hollow-body (like Jewel's but without cutaways) and a Guild electric; he was in good form, though once he said "Hey, I got through that with no mistakes. Time for another JB." And another chance to thank the waitress. :-) He changed words of songs to include Indianapolis landmarks and pastimes, asked two people to come up on stage and sing with him, and shared his JB with a married couple on the condition that they share one mouthful with each other. :-) I don't mean to imply that he was out of control; on the contrary, he was unfailingly polite and cheerful. The audience responded with rare restraint, for the most part. Stinky was a wild man; he looks to be about 4'10" at most, with shoulders like a wrestler. He can play anything with anything; he drummed on the floor, steps, walls, Steve's shoes, his guitar, John's bass, and anything else that would hold still. He walked through the audience like guitar players are known to do, drumming on willing people. He made crazy faces, screamed and whined into the mic for Steve, drooled on command, lost several drumsticks, and unfailingly kept the beat when needed. John played flawless rhythms on his Fender J-bass, while jumping up and down completely out of sync with the music. He crowd-surfed twice off the stage and once off the PA stack, and provided backing vocals for Steve as needed. So good it was easy not to notice him -- till he stopped playing. If the waitress was late with her round, Steve would slyly slip a verse into whatever he was singing, reminding her of it. Once he announced "Now's Not the Right Time for Love" and blithely played "Okie from Muscogee". They played "Right Time" later. I was in stitches most of the time with his spur-of-the-moment lyric changes and interaction with the band. Invariably a changed lyric or intentionally spiked note would induce hysterics in the other band members, who valiantly tried not to lose the beat. Oh, they were having fun. Steve repeatedly said so, and thanked hte small but appreciative crowd for turning up in such dreary weather. One incident in particular convinced me that Jewel didn't spend time with Steve purely because of his looks: During the latter part of the concert, our buddy Neil got very excited (he does that -- no drugs were involved) and climbed up on the stage, to dive off onto us; he stayed well clear of the band. After he repeated the maneuver, Security immediately and firmly guided him toward the door. Steve Poltz STOPPED the music and said, "Hey! Guys! I'm sorry! He's a friend of ours; I asked him to do that. I apologize; I won't ask him to do it again. Please let him stay; it's my fault, and I apologize." They let Neil remain in the audience. I looked at Sharron and said, "He's all yours!" She rolled her eyes. Now was that an EDA thing to do, or what? Anyway, Los Rugburns got called back for a couple of intense encores; the second was a rousing and scary 20-minute version of "Dick's Automotive." Near the end, where the mama deer takes acid (er, just go with it if you haven't heard the song) Steve went off into a 5-minute free-form rap about peace, love, Altamont, the Sixties, and whatever came to mind. All at a machine-gun pace. Stinky literally fell off the drum riser in hysterics, tears running down his face. John was doubled up clutching his stomach, gasping for breath. The audience was paralyzed or boggling, depending on the frame of mind. They wrapped to a cheering ovation, and Steve invited us all out to have a few drinks in the back alley. Well, on the way off the stage, all the guys stopped to give out handshakes, hugs, and kisses to the polite and very civil crowd. I don't know how it started, but Steve was kissing everyone in the front row; and they were mostly male. He slowly worked his way across and off the side. I was greatly amused that so many straight guys were so easily swept up in the moment, and took it as a normal handshake-type thing. The ladies present were not even visibly surprised by it. Sharron was talking to John, and he was readily persuaded to sign our T-shirts with nice long inscriptions. I told him about Toni, the band, and her Fender bass :-) and he wrote a nice long not to her on the shirt. Stinky was even more gracious, if that is possible, and cheerfully signed as well. Both guys were outspokenly grateful for the audience, and appreciated our compliments. After I finished talking to them, I looked around for Steve. Aha! Beside the stage PA, talking and signing. He was even MORE gracious, which is surely impossible, and after I explained that my daughter was a huge 'burns fan and made me listen to them until I was hooked... he wrote a VERY sweet note to her, "mucho love", etc. etc. I told him that she would surely faint with gratitude and that I would send her a kiss from him. Well, he was already used to kissing all the other guys in the room... Liz, Toni, don't shriek like that. HAHA! I kissed Steve Poltz and you haven't! HAHA. Oh dear, this will probably become part of the EDA legend now... I swear, I really like girls better... Anyway, in a very good mood indeed (from the CONCERT! Don't even think otherwise!), I headed home and gave Toni her gifts. Now I have to post this before it gets to be novel-length and I fall asleep on the keyboard. Hope it was amusing and/or entertaining to the majority of you, and all the Rugburns fans. I was really happy about it and rushed home from work to have a listen. I whammed it into the CD player in my bedroom, and sat back to listen to it. I thought the songs were magnificent, especially "Foolish Games", "Little Sister", and "Painters". Then I came along "Adrian". This was shocking, because it was so real. And the way that all the verses were alike ('cept the bridge) it really emphasised everything, the actuality of it all. I don't believe you could sit someone in a room by themselves, and have them listen to this song properly with out stirring some emotion, whether it is shown or not. I know it did for me, and I don't think my parents understood when I explained to them why my eyes were red. Anyway, since I listened to Adrian about three hours ago, I haven't returned listening to the album. I love it, don't get me wrong, but I think I need a rest from such powerful music. And I will listen to the rest of it, maybe tommorow :) I just wanted to express my thoughts about the music I adore, and since there is no-one in this Jewel-less country I call New Zealand (Yeah, I know I'm whinging again. How many of those people have actually listened to the cd more than once or twice? I can respect music like jewel's which comes from more folkie roots and Beck who comes from country, funk, rap.. and anything else. I wouldn't say that Sublime or 311 are popular because of beck, cause in my opinion he sounds not that much like either of them. But i will say that Beck is a great artist and he deserves all the respect he is getting this year. I have to agree with some other posters that The Roots are an amazingly talented group, as are The Fugees. The popularity of Jewel does not have to diminish because other groups or artists are more popular. On another note i saw Jewel on the MTV "Men of '96" special (HEY, It came on right after ALtv... who by the way is another artist who deserves more respect, comedically and musically.) anyway what jewel said was that she really thought a couple guys were cute, and good actors. Most of what I have seen (or read, whatever) has been negative and derogatory towards one person or another, and frankly, all of this has left a bad taste in my mouth. There have been a few people (you know who you are) who have been extremely kind and helpful in getting into the flow of the list, but for the most part, each message I read takes away a little bit of the desire I have to be on the list. When I joined, maybe under false impressions, I thought that we would discuss items re:Jewel, and even some not re:Jewel, but regardless of the issue, we would act like civilized individuals who have all congregated to the list because we have one thing in common, the fact that we love Jewel's music. Have I overstepped my bounds here? I don't think so, I am merely sharing the opinion of one discouraged and confused newbie who isn't sure this is where he wants to be and isn't sure if this is what he thought he was getting into when he submitted his name to be added to the list. - - Todd ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 18:55:16 EST From: frkarras1@juno.com (Todd A Werner) Subject: Re: newbie reques >I am now making a public post: Do you think anyone might be able to dub this tape? If nobody wants to >I understand, just please don't get mad because I am a newbie I forgot to add something on my last opinion: Yes, I find it incredible... unsettling?... (is that the word I want? It'll do...) that somebody would make bootlegs and sell them, in so many words. However, I also find it unsettling that certain people have these tapes (whether it be Jewelstock or Rare Angels or whatever it may be) and that they have, with the tapes, been designated to hold all the cards in relation to what the newbies get to listen to. So, if you decide that you don't want to dub the tapes for us, something that costs you absolutely nothing, then we are deprived of some of the greatest music that we all know and are deprived of the very reason that we are all here. This list seems organized, rather informally, into people who have it (not me) and newbies who don't have it (that's me...) and us newbies can't cross that invisible line until we have been, essentially, given permission by somebody else on the list and have obtained tapes. Hopefully, I will be obtaining the tapes through somebody on this list (they already know who they are), somebody that was kind enough to recognize that I love Jewel as much as the next EDA and that he will never be 100% sure that I won't sell the tapes, and that he doesn't want to deprive me of the great music that we are here about, but rather wants to share it with me. I don't think, without actually physically meeting a person, you can instill 100% of your trust in them. Sometimes, I guess you just have to go with the flow and put a little trust and, to quote Jewel's cover: "Have a Little Faith." The deadline is now at the end of the year. If you really want to contribute, but would need some extra time for it, then talk to me about it. I'm easy. Hello everyone! Tom Proven and I would like to proudly announce that the Everyday Angels List Member Tape is officially under way. Basically, it's a chance for YOU, an EDA member, to cover your favorite Jewel song for all other EDA's to hear! If you can't play an instrument, then fine. Sing it a capella. Like Karen Carpenter said, "Don't worry if it's not good enough for anyone else to hear. Just sing. Sing a song." Here's a guideline of what I plan: - - --------------------------------- 1) People email me the top *3* Jewel songs they would like to cover by August 9th. That gives everyone a little over a week to decide. Indicate whether or not you know how to play the songs, or if you need the chords and lyrics. If I don't know the chords to a song, I will post every few days or so a request to the list asking anyone who does to email me a copy. If no one answers the request, I'll try to figure it out or pass the buck over to Tom Proven. The reason I'm asking for your top 3 songs is to have an alternate, should someone else want to do the song. If there ARE conflicts (and I'm sure there will be), I will email all interested parties and ask if they would like to do their alternate pick. Hopefully, there will be a resolution, but if there is not, then we'll have different versions of certain songs. But that's okay. It'll also show which of Jewel's songs have the biggest impact on us. Remember, you don't have to be a Jewel clone and stay true to the original song. BUT if I get eight versions of WWSYS that all sound the same, some are going to get trimmed, unless there are noticeable differences or there are enough versions of the same song to justify its own separate tape. 2) Once the play list is settled, I will tell everyone where to send their tapes. I ask that people send me a copy of their cover, because bad things do tend to happen every once in a while through the mail. If I have enough tapes in, I will bring a sampling of what I have to the New Hampshire show to whet the appetites of the EDA's there and build up interest. 3) Hopefully, I will have all the tapes in by the end of August and can begin to compile them all. Depending on the amount of interest, I will either tree the tape or send them out myself (that would require really little interest). That's what I hope happens. It would really be beneficial to my sanity if this is done before or shortly after my fall semester starts. The biggest pain I see is figuring out what songs people will do and figuring them out. After that, it shouldn't be too bad. Other points I'd like to bring up: * When sending in your tapes, I'd appreciate it if people would include a picture. If I could put picture (or your band's) next to the song you cover and your name, it would make this tape much more personal. * If someone decides to do 3 songs, and they all sound spectacular, who am I to decide to only include ONE of their covers? But that is a "what if?" question that I will take into consideration should the problem present itself. If only a handful of people decide to contribute to the tape, then I will definitely allow for more than one cover. If I'm deluged by requests, then I may just have to limit it to one per person, lest we have a double tape. * Quality of the recordings will obviously vary, but I encourage everyone to use whatever is at their disposal. If all you have is your boombox, then so be it. But I wouldn't recommend going into a studio unless you really, really want to. I, myself, am just going to use a microphone that plugs into my tape deck. Hopefully, the quality won't vary significantly to force people to adjust the volume when they listen to each song. If someone has any experience and/or input in recording and copying (Mr.BB or Dan Stark?), please email me. * I have nothing against list members doing a cover solo, then another with other local list members and/or their band. Well, that's all I can think of. So everyone email me your requests, and if enough are sent in and done fast enough, I can guarantee you the song. And, in turn, this project can be done before everyone realizes it. Now, start practicing! eric montas :) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 19:30:26 -0500 From: Crash Boy Subject: Jewel #20 on Z100's Hit List jewel is #20 on Z100's Hit List, which can be found on their web site at http://www.Z100.com this is up from #26 about two weeks ago. Once again let me say that anyone on this list can get tapes. It's just that tape TREES are usually one-time things, and then you just have to bide your time until someone offers to help you with your request. (We ALL did, we all went thru it...it's just the way it is) Trees cannot go on forever, they just can't. (In my humble opinion, The main reason you don't see tape re-treed is because of NEW trees) To run a tree you need an organized crew of 15 to 40 people, who commit time to making tapes for anyone on the list who EMAILs in to the person running the tree. (Sometimes a tree is limited by quantity....a maximum # of leaf requests....just so the branches don't get "over worked") Once a tree is over, it's just a bit harder to get them because it's not an organized distribution anymore. (all the tapes on this list thus far are still available, as far as I know) People DO help others get tapes, every day. :) In the last two weeks I've dubbed 10 or so tapes for people, and I've got more to go. Previously, I've sent out well over 30 tapes to new list members out of North America...Sweden, Panama (2 times), New Zealand, Australia, Israel & Guam. ALL of these were to people who were relatively new or brand spanking new to the list. I know for a fact that many other list vets dub tapes all the time. Please "listen" to their posts and not the ones slamming new members. That attitude (slamming new members) is really not the overall attitude of this list. It really isn't. :) Please remember how hard it is to understand the true 'intent' of an EMAIL that someone writes. Having organized JewelStock itself and then the JS Tape Tree I've written well over 1,000 EMAILs to the list and lord knows how many private ones. If there's one thing I've learned it's that if something can be taken the wrong way (in an EMAIL) then IT WILL BE. I've seen MANY EMAILs just since the "a disturbing conversation" one that had stuff in them that could easily be taken two ways. On the other hand, some were quite clear...nasty and could not be taken two ways....IGNORE those posts. They are not, they are clearly not the attitude of this list. It may seem that way, but MANY of the good list members, the 99% I wrote about last Friday, are students studying for finals and going home, EDAs getting ready for the holidays etc. Because of that, they aren't writing to the list and because of that it's much harder to get anyone to dub a tape right now. It's the 1% that are raising hell now. Please ignore them. In January things will be getting back to normal, and two new trees will be forming..... The list will be back, and it will be back to being a fun list. I have nothing but faith in that.
