I am into Jewel's music, her life and everything like most people here but we all have time limitations, priorities and such. I don't read all the digests but one thing I do do is check the subject line summary at the top. I look for this: "Leaf, tree, JS, " cuz these words are like music to my ears. Don't bitch about not having any tapes and about nobody jumping to you rescue to send you stuff. PAY ATTENTION! Its a skill you learn early in life and need to maintain throughout. When time permits I check out the web pages, catch up on stuff. The list is awesome cuz I always know when she is on Letterman, and MTV, and on Rosie because I pay attention. This IS the ultimate source for JEWEL related info. If you don't get along with people on this list and you say your a JEWEL fan your nuts. I support all the people that truly do volunteer hundreds of hours of taping time and the list is too ong to thank everyone. Don't let the 1% ruin the karma on this list! I need a JEWEL fix every month or so. To the powers that be please keep the tape trees alive. Those of us who pay attention will be there for you and will be enjoying all the fruits of your labor. That's enough - see ya at the next concert. Paul ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Dec 1996 11:39:49 -0800 (PST) From: GRACE JULIA LEE Subject: Re: Bootlegging, DATs, and Theremin I see Greg's point. But there are some ways to defeat the bootleg companies. For example, these last few months, I've been working with a few tapers/traders at treeing every Pearl Jam show from the current tour (based on the Phish Operation Everyshow). We look for the best tapes and try and tree them asap. The boot companies are going to continue to produce, but if you try and get everyone a copy of the show quickly, that will prevent some previously "show-less" person to NOT buy the bootlegs. But I think the JS situation is unique in that there is material that Jewel and the management want kept under wraps because a new album is coming out. I'd like to think that any person wanting a bootleg is also a person who will buy the album. Somehow, I doubt that a boot company will boot the whole show, it's not cost-effective to do 3 CD boots. And I doubt they will choose the new material to stick on the CDs, they usually go with the know, popular material that is going to sell. Plus, if someone is not willing to spend $10-15 on a Jewel CD, it is very unlikely they will spend $40-70 on a boot. Just my opinion, Steve T. I would not say Beck's lyrics are meaningful, or even make sense/ But the music sounds good. To be honest, I wouldn't say Jewel's lyrics are anything that special. They're nice, I get all the meanings, but she doesn't say anything all that profound. Most songs don't. What they do is make the listener feel like they have felt the same things that the singer has. Kurt Cobain is widely regarded as a very important musician. He even said once or twice that most of his lyrics are gibberish. He was important because of the music he wrote, not the lyrics. Are you afraid of Theremin. There are more Theremins on the list. And tomorrow or the next day even more. The good EDAs will always out number the jerks that surface. This is by no means an attack on Theremin. He is showing all of us how silly we really are. Now the subject of bootlegging JS is not a silly subject. Trying to go after every person that is trying to get a little attention is not the way to solve this problem. How hard is it to subscribe to this list? We all did it. No one sent me an application to fill out. I didn't have to get top-secret security clearance first. Whats to stop someone from joining and pretending to be a 15 year old willing to have sex with the first person that sends her/him the tapes. That person would get enough tapes to start a Jewel store. Do you think that one generation off will prevent the copies from being bootlegged. Oh sure, we'll brag to everyone that we have better copies. The people on the list that are suggesting that any boots found should be treed. As honorable as their intentions are, be real. How many people are on our list. More than that amount will be sold on one weekend down in the village in NYC or at some flea market or swap meet. That won't even put a dent in the sales that the bootleggers get. Some of the same people that will get the tape from the tree will later look for it on CD so they can be the "ultimate collector." I would like to suggest a few things we could or should do. A thread giving more suggestions on this topic should be of the utmost concern to not only EDAs but all music lovers. This is only partially thought out because my mind is really on a more important thing that happened in my life today. 1. STOP BUYING FROM THIEVING BOOTLEGGERS! Don't give them your money. 2. If you see bootlegs being sold in a store, ask to talk to the owner or manager. Ask them if they know that they are selling bootlegs. Tell them that you don't care to spend money where bootlegs are sold. 3. If you find such a store and the person you speak to is a jerk, post the name of the store and address to the list. Someone from the list will pass the information to the right person. 4. If you tree a tape, make sure that the particular material chosen gets Jewels approval. Even if money isn't exchanged we shouldn't look like bootleggers to Jewel. She should have a say in what happens to her material. What if she hated the quality. What if she thought she was offal that night. What if she just wanted to save the song for a later CD. What ever the reason, it belongs to her. Otherwise we are no better than the taboid photographers, stealing glimpses of a persons most personal moment or their most embarrassing. Let Jewel's gift to us serve as an inspiration for other artists to follow rather than serve as an example of why they should not do the same. Let the JC tapes be the beginning of many more to follow. Bach, for example, might not appeal to as many people now as he did back when baroque was pop, but his compositions are brilliant. There is music that's better than itsounds, regardless of lyrics. This one will only be up untill the 20th. After that I'm gonna get one with my new server. This new one will be bigger and better. Let me just say that most of the stuff on the page is going to be my own creation. I'm trying not to take pieces from other's sights (but I already have taken a couple pics). All of the sounds there where recorded by me so that much I'm good on. Anyways, what's on this sight? Well the Jewel bits from AJ last night are there. A wav from the Wiz of Oz is there. And 3 song clips (2 non-album for all of you newbies that have never heard anything not from PoY). I at this time like to remind the newbies of Xenomorph's sight and how it post a new Jewel song (live and usualy non-album) each week. Here is my URL: http://www.smartnet.net/~mayfair/index.htm And here is the other: http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/xenomorph/jewelmn.htm enjoy!! - -Ashe (ignor the typos) Mayfair ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Dec 1996 02:05:05 +0100 From: Alexander Stamou Subject: Re: beck and call again Damon Schmidt wrote: > > >>Does it > >> sound good? I think the point is that music (and I'm leaving the lyrics totally out of this) isn't only about what sounds good, because what sounds good to some might not sound at all as good to others, and what the masses like isn't generally long-lasting music, even for the masses, is it? Hit singles come and go all the time. No, it's also about the work itself, and the thought behind the music. For instance, J.S. Bach might not appeal to as many people now, as when baroque was pop, but his works are still brilliant, in comparison with a lot of modern music, which may sound great, but is still just a few chords that the artist stumbled upon, so to speak. In that respect, I don't think Jewel is very special either. If I got anything wrong, blame it on lack of sleep. I just felt I had to say this. And if a message very similar to this has already arrived, forgive for being an idiot. I can't remember if I sent it or not. Superstar is talking about the enjoyability of music, which is a worthwhile characteristic. Alex is talking about the artistic value of music, which is just as worthwhile. Both are subjective (although artistic value is more widely agreed upon; there's no accounting for taste :). Each is separate. You're both right. Hooray!
