But now that I know what they are, I really sort of have my heart set on it. I am willing to wait for as long as it takes, but I was wondering whether there was a chance that we may not be able to get tapes if the "newbie-sellouts" become numerous? Just wondering. I am not really expecting to be able to get these tapes anytime soon, but I do want them eventually, and do not want to miss my chance. So is there a chance of us newbies not being able to get these tapes? And could anyone possibly help me get a copy of these tapes? I am afraid that I have nothing to trade, as I do not by bootleg. Whoever the boot guy is, I think he is having some fun with us. People can believe whatever they want about what Jewel wants out of being a musician. Buritohead is............a buritohead ('nuff said). The worst thing that could happen here is that we lose our contact with Jewel or the list itself, if Jeff gets tired of this crap. And, granted, that would suck in a huge way as this list has given us much more than it has ever asked. But, you know, I don't think Jewel is going to stop touring. Maybe I'll never get that chance to sit with her and discuss the subtlties of Kantian philosophy, but I could live without that chance, particularly since I know nothing about Kant. I think Jewel has a long career ahead of her. And I'm excited about that. I really love her music and I plan on enjoying it for a while. There may never be another Jewelstock (gasp). And that's fine. I think we are losing our perspective on things. My life is complete one way or another. I'm sure most of you feel the same way. Let's relax a little. My e-mail system here at school deletes all messages that are unchecked for a month so any messages I get will be deleted sans reading. So here are my last words... for the time being. MY FINAL FIBER OF THE BECK THREAD (read if you please) I didn't mean to sound holier than thou but that was my opinion. "Underwritten" is, in my mind, a valid complaint. Hell, I would argue that one of my favorite songs on the new Pearl Jam album (Present Tense) is underwritten. I love the lyrics, but there is only one verse. In my mind, the song would be better if, rather than repeating the first verse, a second verse was added. If this complaint is holier than thou than I guess I'm as pompous preppy, guilty as charged. For me, music goes beyond does it sound good. My friends get on me about this as well, so I am used to this response. I like a song with great lyrics more than a song with silly rhymes. For instance, I like the Presidents of the United States... but I don't really get into their songs because the lyrics are just plain silly. I like the Violent Femmes, a good sing-along band, but "Kiss Off", "American Music" or "Jesus Walking on the Water" in no way compare to "Candy's Room" by the Boss, "Anna Begins" by the Counting Crows, "Foolish Games" by Jewel, etc. These artists compliment their good sounds with depth and emotion. To put it bluntly, as you oh anti messiah would desire, I am down on Beck because his music doesn't hold me, and the few times it does, the lyrics do nothing for me. Call it underwritten, call it bad taste on my part, but respect it as my humble opinion. As for Buritohead (I say this with no malice), I understand that Beck is an innovator, and I give him props for that, but innovation can only go so far. Also, don't assume that everyone on the list is a "neo-hippie folk" fan. To be completely honest, I listen to The Roots, the Pharcyde, Dave Matthews Band, and Pearl Jam more than Jewel. This would throw me in the labels of Rap junkie or Frat Rocker. I believe most people on the list are like me, a hybrid fan taking interest in multiple kinds of music. The Marilyn Manson quotes back up my hunch. CONCLUSION Beck is a great performer, and an innovative and extremely talented musician. I, however much I respect him, am not into his music. Sorry for taking up so much time with such an unimportant statement. Happy Holidays. That was her fifth operation for Female related problems. She also gave birth twice. Today she had number six. The cysts she had were only drained last time but had grown back. This time she had to have a much more aggressive procedure. She was in the operating room for three 1/2 hours. The surgeon finally came out to talk to me. He showed me 12 color photos of the inside of Kathy's abdomen. Three huge cysts, adhesions and lots of scar tissue was removed. Because of a huge mass of scar tissue on her colon, it was torn trying to remove it. Everything was done with laser and instruments poked through four holes they made in her belly. Because of the torn colon, they had to consider cutting her wide open. She was lucky this time. A specialist didn't find it nesessary. A simular operation many years ago required Kathy to stay in the hospital for a week and it took six weeks of bed rest at home. This time it was much more serius and she was home by 6PM and will be out of work for only 2 weeks. The operation was successful. Kathy's abdomen was filled with a lot of liquid to prevent her from getting new adhesions. It makes her look pregnent. She is in a tremendous amount of pain. After the body absorbs the liquid, she will look like a princess again. But she is really a soldier. I trembled the whole 30 miles on the drive to the hospital. She just marched in fearless, even knowing the pain that was in store for her. As they draw blood from her she didn't even flinch. Because she is a women. Women bleed, swell, and cramp. Women stretch their bodies into huge forms and then bring life by enduring the greatest of pain. Women get pap smeered and mamagramed. Women fight with yeast and bacteria. Women get cut open and have their sex organs removed as a routine procedure. Women have their breast cut into or cut off. When we men listen to Jewel and other female artists, do we really ever hear their pain in the words of their songs. There is more to women than just that wet spot we men manage to find even in the dark. I could never be a woman. Only once did I have to endure laying face down on a cold table and having a Proctologist stick something that felt like a hose up my ass, during a examination. Never again. Even if he sends flowers. Most everyone knows a women that has had a hysterectomy. Yea, no big deal, its a women thing. How many have heard a story like this flowing out of the mouth of a man. Hey Dean, did you hear, Dennis had an operation today. He went in to get his balls cut off. No big deal, its a mans thing. If he was truthful, he would then have to say, Yea, he took it like a women. Are you afraid of Theremin. There are more Theremins on the list. And tomorrow or the next day even more. The good EDAs will always out number the jerks that surface. This is by no means an attack on Theremin. He is showing all of us how silly we really are. Now the subject of bootlegging JS is not a silly subject. Trying to go after every person that is trying to get a little attention is not the way to solve this problem. How hard is it to subscribe to this list? We all did it. No one sent me an application to fill out. I didn't have to get top-secret security clearance first. Whats to stop someone from joining and pretending to be a 15 year old willing to have sex with the first person that sends her/him the tapes. That person would get enough tapes to start a Jewel store. Do you think that one generation off will prevent the copies from being bootlegged. Oh sure, we'll brag to everyone that we have better copies. The people on the list that are suggesting that any boots found should be treed. As honorable as their intentions are, be real. How many people are on our list. More than that amount will be sold on one weekend down in the village in NYC or at some flea market or swap meet. That won't even put a dent in the sales that the bootleggers get. Some of the same people that will get the tape from the tree will later look for it on CD so they can be the "ultimate collector." I would like to suggest a few things we could or should do. A thread giving more suggestions on this topic should be of the utmost concern to not only EDAs but all music lovers. This is only partially thought out because my mind is really on a more important thing that happened in my life today. 1. STOP BUYING FROM THIEVING BOOTLEGGERS! Don't give them your money. 2. If you see bootlegs being sold in a store, ask to talk to the owner or manager. Ask them if they know that they are selling bootlegs. Tell them that you don't care to spend money where bootlegs are sold. 3. If you find such a store and the person you speak to is a jerk, post the name of the store and address to the list. Someone from the list will pass the information to the right person. 4. If you tree a tape, make sure that the particular material chosen gets Jewels approval. Even if money isn't exchanged we shouldn't look like bootleggers to Jewel. She should have a say in what happens to her material. What if she hated the quality. What if she thought she was offal that night. What if she just wanted to save the song for a later CD. What ever the reason, it belongs to her. Otherwise we are no better than the taboid photographers, stealing glimpses of a persons most personal moment or their most embarrassing. Let Jewel's gift to us serve as an inspiration for other artists to follow rather than serve as an example of why they should not do the same. Let the JC tapes be the beginning of many more to follow. Such an un-educated view of art and artistic accomplishment is not that much better than total ignorance about the piece. Example - Let's take.. oh, Romeo and Juliet. (I know, we've been around and around about this one, but this is new) Everyone knows the story, and everyone who doesn't can watch the dang movie or a stage production or even the ballet and understand the story - it's a classic, after all. But if you study the play, yes, if you get snooty ;^) about it even, your understanding of the genius of Shakespeare increases, you can understand why this play has, for the past 400 or so years been held up as one of the masterpieces of the Western theatrical tradition. Same thing for music - some of the best bands never get any radio play - do they lose out in the quality column? Just because something "sounds" good, does that mean that it is worth our time as a culture to elevate to the status of art? (example - "Heeeey - Macaroni!") Because YOU may not enjoy Baroque or a good set of Scottish Pipes, does that make them "less"? By your narrow definition of music, yes, it would. - -Jeffrey- - -- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- jeffm@genghis.com http://luna.genghis.com/jeff/index.htm - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Dec 1996 09:50:28 -0800 From: martin bruce Subject: Re: Fwd: Take That,Ha! I don't have an extensive collection, but then again, I don't have to have everything Jewel has ever done, and I don't like to impose on others that much. With a couple of these tapes, you will be able to get a fair catalog of Jewel songs that are not on her commercially available albums, plus a chance to hear her tell some stories about the songs. I believe this is what you said you were looking for. Regarding the JS tapes, I believe Mike Connell has explained (numerous times) that Jewel herself requested that these tapes not be copied after the first and only tree. As a fellow EDA, I hope that you can understand his and other people's desire to follow Jewel's wishes. (BTW, veteran EDAs might want to downplay the superiority of these tapes, as that might seem like a "I-have-something-you-can't-have" attitude.) In closing, I hope you get a chance to see Jewel the next time she comes to Nashville. 2 hours of travel should be worth the opportunity to see her. She's played at 328 Performance Hall both times she's been here, and both times I was not 10 feet away from her. Poor acoustics, but at that distance, who cares? If you want copies of what I have (except JS), let me know, and we'll set something up. Bill Yeh Fellow EDA >Well, I don't know what to do. Not very many people. Of those people who would, how many of them would even think of selling them? They all have been propositioned before, we know that. Why would they sell now? We just got through a whole big deal about how these few people do so much for this list (thank you, btw). And where would a newbie get DAT copies? Unless they took analog copies and copied them onto DAT. Sorry, but DAT copies of analog are still the same quality of the analog. So even if this isn't some fool mouthing off, even if he might be serious, he most likely has the same 3rd+ generation copies everyone else has (cept me, still waiting, but they're coming :). And if we have the company name, there is stuff we (and management) can do about it. No, that's not it at all. We have vocally only dealt with Lenedra on this and Hiranya via EMAILs. After the initial plan of having the tapes only treed to those on the list prior to Jewelstock, they agreed with us that it would be impossible to do, so they then agreed to a one time tree, but then after the tree allowing the leaves to copy them for ANY new list members (As long as the receiver of the tapes was verified as a member of the list) > (BTW, veteran EDAs might want to downplay the superiority of > these tapes, as that might seem like a "I-have-something-you-can't-have" > attitude.) Therefore the above statement by Bill does not need be heeded as that is just not the case at all, not one bit. Again, ANY list member is allowed the tapes, it's just never going to be treed again, and a newer member has to get tapes like any other post-tree tape. (i.e. join in the list, have fun, make friends, and try to get some of the tapes that we all enjoy) I myself have been involved with only 2 tape trees, and I have a good 15 Jewel Concert tapes. I did it the hard but best way, make friends and get them eventually. I was on this list two months before I bothered to try to get tapes. In all cases but 3 I traded or sent blanks and got them in return. The fact remains that the person(s) that can do anything about bootlegs CDs is Atlantic and their lawyers. And legally they can do nothing about the CDs being produced, they can only take action against they initial seller. They really does no good considering it's the bootleg companies making all the real money. And because of loopholes in places like Italy (though they are getting more strict and shutting down plants), San Marino, Australia, and SE Asia, these companies are given the go-ahead if they pay a certain tax to the government. As far as JS DATs are concerned, they are out there. I've talked to plenty of traders who are connected to the music scene in some way or another, and they have always had the rarest of recordings. Soundboard techs make copies of studio sessions, video tape concerts for the band, but they usually make copies for themselves too. While most of the techs are generally honest and trade among themselves, somewhere down the line someone decides to make a profit, or trade to an unscruplous trader. Theremin probably didn't sell any DATs. Why would he send the DATs to Italy and keep analog masters. Doesn't make sense. He's probably venting a bit of steam for one reason or another, which is his right. It probably didn't help that EDAs were secretly prying him for information and then posting it to the list, which he is probably still reading and getting a kick out of all the frustration he's caused. Let the issue go... We, as EDAs, can't do anything against him, legally, so let's drop the issue and talk about what really matters to this list, Jewel.
