I live on Long Island and have found there are at most 5 local access telephone numbers and I can never get through between the hours of 7pm until past 12 midnight. I was just able to get through now, at 1:53 am, and the only way I did that was to pick a further access number, I personally think it is ridiculous to pay for something you can't use when you need to. There is a way to send them a suggestion...of course you have to get online first. Anyway, they always have responded to my complaints/suggestions and maybe if enough of us do it, things will get better. Go to member services.....I think that is where I explained my dilemma. It's a large, thick reference book, similar to the Rolling stone Encyclopedia of Rock. It goes artist by artist, giving their biographies and reviewing the albums from each. (It would make an excellent gift for any music fan.) I flipped open to J to get an idea how up-to-date and accurate the info may be. Sure enough, Jewel was deemed essential enough to be included. Here, without permission :P, is what they had to say: PIECES OF YOU ============= Produced by Neil Young collaborator Ben Keith, and recorded partly live and acoustic at a San Diego coffeehouse, Jewel's "Pieces Of You" (Atlantic, 1994; Producer: Ben Keith)*** introduced a sunny, sensitive folkie with a surfer-chick attitude and a poet's soul. But she immediately began bucking against the singer-songwriter pigeonhole. Compared to the introspective sound of the album, Jewel's live shows were funny, funky and loose, liberally dosed with cheerful monologues, yodeling excercises and such sexually charged, unreleased rockers as Race Car Driver and the punk-pop "God's Gift To Women" (which can be found on a 1994 Atlantic promo-only EP titled "Save The Linoleum" - it's worth whatever you have to pay for it.) Relentless touring as opening act for everyone from Peter Murphy to Bob Dylan, a role as Dorothy in a TBS-produced update of "The Wizard Of Oz", and the hypnotic rhythms of her twice-released single "Who Will Save Your Soul" helped goose her debut to gold status in 1996. -David Okamoto - ----- From the credits: David Okamoto is the Music Editor for The Dallas Morning News, and a contributing editor to ICE. That would depend on the context... EP is usually short for Extended Play, while LP would be Long Play... In (VHS)videotapes, LP is the half speed (4 hours) format, and EP is the third speed (6 hour) format. In the days of vinyl, however, EP referred to the records that were *shorter* than LPs, generally around the 7 song (20-30 min) mark, instead of the 10+ range of LPs. I suppose somewhere, they're also abbreviations for songs, though I can't think of any songs offhand. :) Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Dec 1996 23:48:07 GMT From: "Terrence R. Hello EDAs, I have a question, Even though I live in the land of Olympic ad nauseum, I read about a concert on KTIS in California that is supposed to take place tonight (Sunday). Does anyone know if Jewel is actually going to sing? I know she is on the list of performers, but wondering about condition of her health. I am bringing this up now to try quash talk of getting dubs from the "When You Smile" bootleg CD. The CD is an illegal bootleg of the 5/18/96 show in Boston. It has the entire show on it (cut off a bit at the end). It appears to be mastered from a "numerous" generation cassette tape. I would not waste my time getting a cassette copy of that boot. Why? Read on. The one tree will be the SAME concert, but it will be mastered from the WBCN Broadcast Feed Master (DAT) and the WestWood One Radio CD that was put out by the radio network. The quality of this treed tape will be much nicer than any cassette off of the boot CD. (not to mention the cool J-cards :) Alan will be sending that master to the seed for this tree who will be setting up the cassette to be treed. It is not known at this time who will be the administrator of that tree. Branch & leaf calls for that tree will be announced mid to late January, after classes start up, by whomever is running it. (I think the seed already has someone in mind, if not himself) The second tree will be one I will be running. It is not at this time 100% certain that this tree will happen, as it consists primarily of the Jingle Ball 96 shows and there are still some unknowns, including Jewel's recent battle with bronchitis. However, Alan & I are quite confident that this one will be a go too. (Some nice surprises are in the works for it) Also, as in the tree of the Boston 5/18 show, branch & leaf calls will be announced mid to late January. Please do not bother Alan nor myself with questions about either of these trees now. Rest assured they will not be treed until after classes start up again in January. I visited my mall Musicland today and a friend was working, so, just for kicks, I asked her what Jewel stuff they could order. Three things came up: Pieces of You CD, Pieces of you Cassette, and a listing that said "Jewel/Who Will Save Your"... The price on this was $10.99, so obviously not the CD or cassette single. Another girl working there said it was a Jewel import. I have heard no mention of a Jewel CD single import, so I wanted to check out and find out what was on it before I prepaid and ordered it. So, what's the news on this product? Any ideas? todd ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Dec 1996 20:38:05 -0500 From: Horter3@aol.com Subject: Re: KTIS concert? Well...unless she's gonna make a totally unannounced appearance at a show put on by a radio station that rarely, if ever, plays her music, no. And since the show starts in about a half hour, it is a little too late to announce her. But at least we get Orbital and Chemical Brothers. Now if Underworld had played....Man oh man!! It is one of those movies where you wished that it had actually happened. The thing is, Dorothy (Renee Z.) looked so much like jewel that it was like I began to think it WAS Jewel. It was really strange. I absolutely loved the movie, and I would DEFINITELY 100%ly recommend this wonderful, stupendous movie in my HONEST opinion!!! Ok, I will stop rambling now!!
