He stands out among Guam's other musicians like an Angel above a junkyard. The rest of our musicians sing cheesy, corny, sappy songs, which a lot of people like. J.D. Crutch sang with emotion, meaning, and could carry a beautiful tune as well. He's been giving us great music for 25 years, and it's a tragedy that he won't be making more. The Birth of JewelStock

As the Internet grows, there is a growing concern that it will divide our populace and de-humanize our society. Disproving this contention is the recent experience of an online fan discussion group for the singer/poet Jewel Kilcher.

After many months of online communication, dedicated members of the jewel@smoe.org mail list group found themselves meeting face-to-face in the historic Bearsville Theatre near Woodstock, New York. Aside from limited contact at local Jewel performances, most participants had never met before. Fans ranged in ages from 15-50, with diverse interests that seemed to include only one common focal point: Jewel and her music.

In light of today's high profile marketing of musical artists, the events that led to this unlikely rendevous are even more remarkable.

In response to a list members off-hand request, Jewel agreed to give a private concert for the list members. Through Hiranya, a Jewel management contact and sometimes participant in the list group discussions, Jewel made an early June post agreeing to do a private performance. The response from the list was phenomenal, with the event quickly being given the label "JewelStock" for its close proximity to the Woodstock community.

One of Hiranya's stipulations was that list members would handle most of the arrangements. List members in the Woodstock area stepped forward to do just that. Fans Mike Connell and Richard Chang coordinated communications with other list members across the country, with many of the arrangements handled by Lenedra Carroll, Jewel's mother and manager. Other members pitched in, establishing a web site for distributing information, designing event tee-shirts and buttons, and coordinating rides across the United States. The latter effort was cleverly dubbed "Angel Needs a Ride" after a popular Jewel song.

While this event started out as a private party and concert for the members of the list group and their guests, it soon evolved into a two night affair as a second concert was added, to be held for the benefit of the Bearsville Theatre operating budget.

The theatre venue was selected as it was being used for rehersals, and its close proximity to the studio Jewel was recording her followup album to "Pieces of You," which is quickly reaching platinum status. The Thursday night, July 18th concert was closed to the general public, and free to all list members who traveled to see Ms. Kilcher perform. Tickets for a second show on the following night was partially open to the public. All proceeds from the $15 ticket price went to benefit the Bearsville Theatre.

Fans traveled from across the United States, most carpooling, some from as far away as California. Jewel has a loyal and dedicated fan base, with as many as 450 routinely participating in discussion via the e-mail based discussion group. Much of the discussions concern Jewel's lyrics, show reviews and well-meant advice and banter between list members. Humor is a trademark of these fans. Universally, they have taken for themselves the moniker of "EveryDay Angels," a term taken from the Jewel song "I'm Sensitive."

"I'd rather see the world from another angle,
We are EveryDay Angels,
Be careful with me 'cause I'd like to stay that way."
A&M recording artist Patty Griffin opened for Jewel on Thursday night, followed by poetry readings and singing by Jewel. This was a hardcore group of Jewel fans, wanting to hear her lesser known live material, currently commercially unavailable. Appropriately, the one song neither requested nor sung was her current mega-hit single "Who Will Save Your Soul?" After the show, both artists met with the fans for autographs and pictures. After Jewel retired, list members continued socializing until the wee hours of the morning at various local parties.

Live performances from both shows were taped for possible inclusion in Jewel's new album, which is scheduled for release in January of 1997.

So to those that don't want to read this--F#@* you- delete this post. To those of you who know me or want to read it, read on. Today we lost a list vet. Mr. Bershaw has done a ton of stuff on this list that has allowed us to enjoy Jewel's music. He was a post man for JS, keeps trees going, and has been an all around "Mr. Fix it" for some of the problems that have ailed the list. He may be on a power trip(doubt it), but he's also one of the 3...4 most important people on the list as far as the things that we all enjoy here--like the personal contact to jewel, tape trees, etc. If you don't think that Alan is an all around nice guy--ask Chelsea. All I've got to say about this is that it's about time he left-- not for our good, for sure, but for his own. NO ONE- NO ONE should get a message like the one he got from some snot nosed brat that wields a keyboard as his only weapon. You wuss--don't bring a water pistol to a gun fight. I mentioned this to the EDA's at the Patriot Center show, and I think it's about time to mention it to a few on the list. I'd like to explore the possibility of creating an invite only Jewel list. I'm not advocating censorship of the list--just a place where the EDA's that have proven their time could be in residence. Call me nostalgic, but I miss the old days when the volume of the list was not much different than today, but everyone was civil to each other, and the only flames came privately(not to mention were civil). Igor's flame was stern, but civil, and taught me a lot about the list, and etiquette(some of you need to look it up). Someone could keep up with the regular list and reccomend people to be invited on the list. That way, no one would have to read list celebs posts, etc.- we could remove our clutter from the list. When I joined the list, I didn't beg for tapes-- I read the posts and got to know people. Eventually, I saw that Gerrit did some dubbing. I ASKED him to do a few for me, and I've always sent extra tapes to him. Nothing comes for free in this life, kiddies. For his kindness, I've even helped him to get a few things he didn't have. For my kindness, he is always awesome about doing tapes, no matter how many I ask for. I hope that he would say our relationship has benefitted him as well as getting me many tapes. The point is, that I never considered Alan or Mike or Selena to be the list tape copiers. I read messages and found out who would do it. Now no one wants to read messages--they just want to get their tapes and go. If that's you--STAY OFF THE LIST- just get on the web and find traders--you'll get tapes, and you don't have to waste our time or test our patience. Sorry for the long post--I doubt many of you get this far. This list has done extraordinary things for me. I've met people that I consider the finest on the earth. Evidently Jewel sees it, too. That's why she always smiles when she sees us at shows, and why she takes our requests--even when she doesn't know the words;). Some of the new people on the list will never understand this. All you want is tapes-I hope you get 'em and get the hell off of what used to be a really awesome list. I know I'll get flamed for this, but I don't care anymore. I'll probably get flamed by some of the people that are the most special to me-that's okay, too. I know how to take flames and learn from them. What I do care about is the fact that today we lost one of the corner posts of this list because some asswipe that couldn't carry Alan's dirty underwear. I hope that Alan isn't so disgusted that he quits the list altogether-- then again, it would serve the list right. (I'm sorry for the length of this, but....) Alan, As God is my witness, I SWEAR I was going to send you a private e-mail to you today even before I read this very distressing message. When I was reading some of the recent discussions about the so-called list celebs, I was prompted (for no real reason) to write you to say how much I appreciate your participation in this list. I'm still a fairly new person here, but my few interactions with you have been pleasurable, and you've been encouraging, and I wanted to acknowledge that. In light of your most recent message, however, what I choose to say is this. More importantly than my direct experience - in fact more importantly even than your role in the Jewelstock tapes project, which was a defining characteristic for many of us on the list - is what you bring to this list each day. It's far more than being a conduit to Jewel for us. It's who you are EVERYDAY that enriches this list. I don't want to diminish for a second my respect for our common ideal that everyone's participation on this list is what makes it special. However, people such as yourself and Mike Connell, and others I won't name right now, really epitomize (for me) the best of what we are. We are not just here for special occasions and events. We are EVERYDAY angels. I've seen the list members be there for each other EVERY day. And you are one of those who have actively and consistently participated with your informative and entertaining warmth and humour. This is the important part. Alan, I beseech you to reconsider your decision. I'm tired - so unbelievably tired - of seeing the good guys, the majority of people, lose out to the minority of those people who are malovelent, ignorant and inconsiderate. I don't think I believe in good and evil in the religious sense, but I sure believe there are good and evil behaviours, good and evil values, good and evil actions. Alan, by letting those few selfish ingrates drive you away from actively participating on this list, you are letting evil have a victory over the 99 per cent of us who will be deprived of your presence. I know this sounds corny, but I'm dead serious. I can only imagine how hurt you must have felt to have come to this decision, and if time away is what you need, I know we must respect that. But don't the good guys deserve to win sometimes? I will be away from my e-mail for the next three days, so I won't even know whether you've responded until Tuesday, but I sincerely hope that your return will preceed mine. Let me conclude by saying although I've met Jewel, I've never met any of the EDA's on this list, but I look forward to the day when that changes. And Alan, it will genuinely be just as important to me as meeting Jewel was to be able to shake your hand and buy you a drink in the spirit of fellowship that you deserve. (see, I can do math, even though I am an actor). Also, just exactly what books do they send to these kids? I actually put a few suggestions into my E-mail (not that they'll pay any attention to that) And can you E-mail more than once? Or does that not count. Trauma is a branch of Interscope. While not as big as Epic or Sony or Atlantic etc. etc. it does have the backing of the big one, Atlantic. See, Warner owns Atlantic which owns Interscope which owns or controls Trauma. This way you don't have an R&B guru producing Heavy Metal or a Grunge lover trying to piece together a Rap album. Each label sticks to it's own genre of music. Trauma is also in the same league as Nothing Records which is managed by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame.... who knows... maybe No Doubt will have their own label some day. Has anybody else heard anything about it? SenztvRtst Kermit Scooter ------------------------------ Date: 14 Dec 1996 03:32:02 -0000 From: "Derrick Chhay" Subject: NJC: My latest poem Hi everyone. Last night I wrote a poem. It took me all day to think about it and write it. It's really short and it really sucks. Let me know what you think, okay? High Authority by Derrick Chhay Tear soaked hands are hiding me My body in suspension As I count happiness I start to envy They are praised and glorified Fantasy has embodied their souls We are dirt They step on us with no care They steal our pride and faith What have we to live for? All my beliefs have been shattered like a jar striking the ground Every piece is a thought Let their end be an augury Let it restore my faith Let me face my world with open eyes They can't bring me down They can only make me stronger Epilogue:We see people like this everyday. We envy all these people who have found happiness but are not willing to share it with us. We look at ourselves and are ashamed. We look at them and it makes us feel worthless. They don't care about us because they've already found what they're looking for. Some of them humiliate us because we don't fit their standards. Everything that we work for, they turn into garbage. What's the use of living? I mean, what's the use of going on when you're gonna get stomped on anyways? Why don't we just end our lives? This might be a shock to you, but I have to admit that I've thought about that before. Yeah, I've been talked about behind my back. And I've been put down too. Mostly by people you would never expect to put me down...like my parents. When I said in the poem, "Let their end be an augury," I wasn't referring to death. I meant that I hope that the way they put me down and the way they're never proud of me ends some day. Until that happens, I'm not gonna let them or anyone else put me down or let them get in the way of doing what I wanna do in life. I've accomplished a lot of stuff in my 16 years of life and it's not gonna stop there. I'm gonna keep on thinking the way I've always thought and I'm gonna keep on doing what I've always done. I'm not gonna let people like this tell me that I'm stupid or that I don't know anything. I only have one chance to live, so I might as well make the best of it. This happens to be my first post and it unfortunately doesn't have much to do with Jewel. I was never a supersticious person before today. After waiting seventeen years to find out if i get into college my letter happens to arrive on FRI. the thirteenth. This week I had been receiving very positive signals. However, when i opened the letter I found out that i had been differed. I was crippled in my chair with disappointment. My former/soon to be again girlfriend in Brazil got in and I have to wait untill April for the final decision. I was so close to ultimate bliss and now i am so far. Luckily??, this has been the biggest disappointment in my life. I am waiting for this to fully sink in. Unfortunately, I am still in that stage of, "I really hope this is another bad dream." The hardest part is being really happy for my "gf". Thanks for listening. Joey - --You hands are in my hair, but my heart is in your teeth.
