I think this guy has got a lot of potential and a great, if somewhat nasal, voice. When I saw him open up for Jewel over the summer his set seemed longer than it had to be, but there was some great stuff in there. The two songs off the RCD single, "In the absence of the sun" and "Selena," are pretty damn good. You don't think "Selena could be a song about an encounter with our list's very own during the time Duncan was opening for Jewel, do you? Only he'll know for sure. I also remember him doing a great version of Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees," complaint rock if ever there was some but a stellar performance nevertheless. Does anyone know anything about Paula Cole. Saw her video last night and was fairly impressed. Was not impressed, however, with Ani DiFranco (flame-retardant suit, on!). Just one man's opinion. As far as this whole "list celebs" thing goes, this list is better off for having them. Where else can a record store clerk or some computer guy be elevated to a position of semi-stardom if not on the internet? Best poster out of them all: Igor, hands down. Hooks may like to start riots, but Igor's posts are far more informative and entertaining. I don't know how old he actually is, but he's got the music knowledge of a person who's been in the loop for 50 years. I don't know if that came out right, but he knows his stuff. "are you ready yet?" capello starts bitching about her tummy hurting, so we had to stop at the micky d's for a happy meal... and we were off on our merry way..lost the radio station and popped in ani difranco with capello snickering watching duff's face with amusement. amazingly this little red del sol came up behind us..duff moved over to let them by..but they had already tagged us...following us the entire 300 miles. duff's amazing driving ablility got us going 90 miles an hour, weaving in and out of semi's and cars...and capello wants to add something negative about the lack of speeding on highways anymore (the good ole' days). about 2 and half hours later we stopped to get gas (duff's new little car gets good gas miles) and duff got all pissy because capello wouldn't flirt with the cute gas teller guy..meanwhile duff has lost her obsessive/complusive ablitites about cleaning windshields when stopping for gas? back on the road again. so we um...get off on another highway spot the westport area, which by the way is not nearly as neat as our kansas city westport area. fight with the traffic for twenty minutes just to get to a place less than a mile away. after walking on dead's peoples names to get to the building (which duff swears is what cursed us) capello called Loomer, which was by the way the only person that acknowledged that they were attending the concert, (BOB AND AMANDA FAILED MISERABLY)..duff, the wonderous explorer, first noticed the big white sign that announced Jewel Kilcher has Fallen ILL. after many tears and much bitching. duff told capello the bad sad horrible news. capello checked it out to make sure it was true...got back on the phone with loomer and told him they were going home. duff tried to return our tickets to the box office (yes they were refundable) she wouldn't take them...something about that duff has to call the ticket-phone thing (loomer what's the number again?) then we left...and desided to eat because we were in the middle of rush hour for the drive home. we ate at steak-and-shake and paged loomer again to tell him where we were at...capello called her dad and he laughed. loomer called us at the steak-and-shake. the employee screaming at capello "hey green sweater girl you have a phone call". we met loomer at a movie theather, he blocked a bunch of cars with his car when he parked, we desided to go over to the "dove" mall..and got lost in some store we've never heard of before. we spent about two hours hanging out in the mall (bob and amanda you could have joined us). then we made the LLLOOONnng dark road home..."have we made it to columbia yet?" "no" "are you sure?" "yes, i'm sure" "DAMMIT" also, yet another semi truck desided to run us off the road (another swift manuiver of duff's expert driving ablities, saved us) finally get home around midnight. capello lays down on the couch and duff flops down on her bed...no jewel, no concert. on a side note...Jewel "they asked me to put on a free concert if they all came to Woodstock. I said yes, and so people drove from San Francisco, Missouri, Florida, Canada, all over." oh so we're special enough to get our state mentioned even though no one from here attended jewelstock..but not special enough for us to play here...and capello no longer wants to hear any bitching, whining or complaining about jewel hasn't been playing in their hometown, because they aren't willing to drive 1,500, 650, or even 300 miles to travel to see jewel. I know Donna Lewis is setting radio records with "I Love You Always Forever" (_please_ stop playing this!), and No Doubt is pretty popular too. If it were truly a "best new artist" award, Jewel would win, hands down, IMO. As for the release date of her new album, I'm setting my hopes on December 1997. That way, even if it's release in summer or even September, I'll be pleasantly surprised. But if it's released in Jan. 98, I'll be pretty darned disappointed, let me tell you! :) To Igor: More stories! How about "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"? To other EDAs: More poetry! I consider myself more of a prose writer, but these beautiful poems are inspiring me to cross over to poetry. Which should be scary to y'all, since I really suck at poetry. The only poem I can recite (in child-like nursery-rhyme fashion): Little bird with pretty bill Come and sit upon my sill Where I will feed you crumbs of bread And then I'll CRUSH YOUR FR**KIN' HEAD! OK, I apologize. That was a horrible poem. But when my uncle told it to me, in such an innocent voice, I had to crack up. Sorry, but I just HAVE to say this. Fist, maybe it should be called "Best Newly Popular Artist", caus you have GOT to know that No Doubt is NOT- I repeat NOT- a new band. It's just that the "Tragic Kingdom" CD was their 1st CD to do really well. See, contrary to popular belive, that is not there 1st CD. Actually, my personal preference is to hook a HiFi VCR up and record with it. You trade tape hiss for head switching noise, but it's pretty minimal. I'd also record to tape, though, just because you can. For cassettes use Dolby NR. I personally like C over B over S, even though some will claim that S is better and sounds better if you playback on B. (My response: if you want to play back on B, make a copy recorded in B) I'd also recommend you record to at least 2 different recording units (tape/video/mixed/whatever) just so you don't have to worry about missing something because of a forced tape change. As long as the flip times are separated by at least a few minutes, it's pretty easy to find places to mix in the second recording, even without great equipment. (i.e. at least you can pick a quiet spot) Watch the input levels, if you can. Usually, just before a big act, there will be enough LOUD screaming (pick a band popular with younger audiences) to give you a good rough idea of the peak level to set for. All radio stations run a compressor/limiter, and sometimes both a compressor and then a hard limiter setting near their overload level, so if you see a peak take and hold, you can pretty much bet that's the max. Set your input level at the max without distortion at that time. (i.e. +2 db, or whatever setting in relation to nominal 0 your tape deck and cassette type seem to like.) (uhh, did that make sense?) If you don't catch a good peak early on, just set it so you can see the meters moving, and try not to mess with it too much. good luck to all of us :) Ray Ray Wong PO BOX 6163 negativl@best.com, negativl@netcom.com Hayward, CA 94540-6163 Member #11537, Deborah Gibson International Fan Club Co-Founder and Charter Member, Sutton Foster International Fan Club ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Dec 1996 16:20:56 -0400 From: "Quentin M.D. LeBlanc" Subject: Re: JC: American Music Awards (fwd) > Sorry, but I just HAVE to say this. I don't know if this has already been pointed out, but if there is anyone out there who is interested in angels other than the EDA variety, there's a rather interesting site at: http://www.angelnet.com/ I haven't explored it in depth yet. It's oriented towards angels and dolphins in a New Age style of spiritualism (in fact, a tad too New Ageish for my taste), but if nothing else, it sure has a strong visual and auditory presence. Just sharing.... Gerry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Dec 1996 19:11:21 -0500 From: NittanyVS@aol.com Subject: NJC: Fwd: Virus Alert! Please Read!!!!
