For people who weren't here when JewelStock took place, I think it would do some good to go back and read some of the digest from that time (they are all archived at http://www.smoe.org) Most of the "inside jokes" and "list celebs" grew from around that time. You have to remember that the list was smaller then and many of us met each other at JS and became true friends (even the Harris Bros). To defend the "Harris Mythos" any of us Northeastern EDA's will stick up for the man. He gives away buttons. His arrival at JewelStock was as eagerly anticipated as Jewel's (even she points him out on the tapes). He organized JewelStock Night 3. At every concert he makes sure that all the EDA's find each other. However, most of all you have to respect him for one thing, at the NH show I was backstage and gave Jewel a button from Dennis her reponse, "Cool." Then she pauses and with a sudden look of fear says, "Oh! You mean he's here." That's why the man is a legend. (I swear that's a true story!) Look at this way if you are a newbie the inside jokes probably annoy you in the same way that a list veteran (I've been on for over ten months) is annoyed by reading questions that have been answered several times and I know are contained in the FAQ (which if anyone who hasn't read they should - - it is sent to you for a reason). It's like people say about the sixties if you weren't there you'll never understand. Phil (The T-Shirt Guy) ps. Talk about list celebs; there have been posts from Alan (Mr. BB), Dennis, Mike Connell, Akira, Igor, Capello, and myself (I say that with all humility) in the last two digests. - -- "You say love is a hell you cannot bear And I say give me mine back and then go there - for all I care" - Fiona Apple, "Sleep to Dream" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Dec 1996 17:48:36 -0800 From: wrdavis@ite.net (Katherine Davis) Subject: JC: I get to watch the Billboard Awards tonite! That be true, 'twas my baby....but only after someone else asked how we could "tell each other apart in Woodstock when there's many tourists?" Ribbons on cars were my immediate idea, but color was a question. I asked Hiranya "what is Jewel's favorite color?"....she said "She ain't got one", so we picked blue 'cause of Jewel's guitar (Big Blue), at the suggestion of a third party. (Eric?) But if you want to go to a concet where you'll have a really good time go to RR. It was up there with the best concerts I've been to! I can't wait untill they come to NY again, they were so excelent! I had the best time however my friend came really late and we missed G-Love, which really bummed me out but RR deffinatly made up for it. They definatly sound better live then they do recorded (reminds me of someone we know) and there were some really interesting people there (1 of the best things about concerts are the people you meet there)! I never knew what a cool theater Beacon was, inconvient to get to, but very cool. They didn't play that much new stuff and ectasty sounded better then ever. And they played for a good 2 hours. There's nothing better then a good concert. I have visited both places, and I liked St. Paul's skyway system a lot better than Minneapolis'. A good place to stay in St. Paul is Kellogg Square apartments. They also have hotel-suite type rooms that are pretty nice and could be shared by many EDAs comfortably. But then I wouldn't be able to go, so I guess I shouldn't really care... I was searching the usenet the other day looking for mention of Jewel in newsgroups when I find this: "Jewel smoking a cigar - cigar3.jpg". Ooh, I saied to myself, she mentioned smoking a cigar at Jewelstock. I wonder how someone got a picture of it. I've got to see this. So for the next hour I worked on getting this picture off the internet and into my PC. First I downloaded Free Agent adn installed it because it does automatic concatonizing and uudecoding (newsgroup picture are uuencoded). But that didn't work because my provider didn't have access to that particular newsgroup. So then I got a uudecoder off some site and installed that. Then I got back in netscape and downloaded the three parts of the file that made up the uuecoded jpg, contatnoated them and decoded then into the actual jpg file. At last I used ACDsee and looked at the final result.... and almost choked! It was an extremely lewd picture of some skaggy porno actress called Jewel naked squating on the floor and smoking a cigar. Ack ack aaaack, ptooey ptooey. Ohmygod, I almost had a heart attack. Oh oh oh jees, I didn't even notice that the the newsgroup was named alt.sex.fetishes.smoking! I gonna be sick. I am new to the list as well. I have been a Jewel fan for a little over a year now. Being that we just recently broke down and bought a computer I now can join this great list. I agree with everyone's feelings/opinons on Jewel she truly is unique! Here's a bit on myself I'm 25 a newlywed of 4 months now and My husband and I are big jewel fans! WE saw her here in chicago in a nice small venue called "the Metro" which for anyone in the chi-town area knows is a great place to see any band! It was so cozy and nice there it was just such an amazing show! I first discovered Jewel on oddly enough Beavis & Butthead they were showing "Who Will Save Your Soul" I was listening and I was like who is this she is so kewl!! Then I rediscovered her again on VH!'s Duets Now that was another kewl show, I also have to say that Joan Osborne did a good job to BUT Jewel was better. Anyways I think we should have a gathering in Chicago becuase unfourtanelty working full-time I don't get extra free time to travel. I know my husband & I would like to hang out w/ other Jewel fans! WEll there ya go..Sorry for the long ramblings..
