Fresh snow is the best, better traction, and you make a cloud that looks like you're one of those jet-cars on the Bonniville flats. The trick is to be prepared for the snow. But I can sympathize with you about the DC area. When I lived there it was like you get a couple of inches of snow and everbodies sliding off the road, there's a million fender-benders and they open up emergency snow routes. Made her look uncomfortable, if you ask me. Holding it close to her thighs whenever small children walked by, She couldn't bend over, get in their little faces, and pinch their chubby cheeks. she couldn't hardly kneel for prayer couldn't stretch her legs out during an extra long sermon Hell, she could barely genuflect, And for years she sat in the same pew, but today she found the need to pick her seat. My grandma wore a mini-skirt to church today, said it made her feel fashionable, I shook my head, "Grandma, since when has it been fashionable, to go to church." Grandpa Grandpa wore a shirt with butter-fly collar today, said it made him feel young and fashionable. I frowned; couldn't bring myself to tell him, that they went out of style, years ago. Doughnuts in parking lots are one of the simple joys in life! Cold weather is fine, too. Like someone said, it's easier to get warm in winter than it is to get cool in summer. And, if you're out enjoying the snow, you'll probably work up a sweat anyway. But, it definitely can get TOO cold. Last winter it was 30 degrees below zero, and it's been forecasted to be colder this coming winter. I suspect CNN will run the piece again on their Entertainment Report (5:30-6:00pm est) this evening. While there is no interview with Jewel, the piece, approximately 1.5 to 2 minutes long, does focus on Jewel's performance, showing only a little of Colvin and McLachlan. Date: 06-Dec-1996 05:44pm EDT From: Hooks, Sean SHOOKS Dept: STUDENT Tel No: TO: Remote INTERNET Address ( _IN%jewel@smoe.org ) Subject: Jingle Ball? Turned on my computer expecting to see a lot of posts about the Jingle Ball. I heard it was mediocre at best and Jewel only played 5 songs. Supposedly Leah Andreone, Patti Rothberg, and Merril Bainbridge were all superflous. If they stuck to the main artists they all would have had more time to perform. I mean, 5 songs from Jewel is exactly why I didn't want to go. Suzanna Hoffs did Eternal Flame, eh. Supposedly, as I've heard before, Sheryl Crow is pretty bad live, though she did do "Run Baby Run" and everybody said that was excellent. Tracy had the best set and she did play "Fast Car", would've enjoyed that. Sarah was cool too but only played like 5 songs too. She premiered one and did "Possession" with just the piano, sending her band back. No Doubt were the closers and the only real high energy band there, most everyone was there to see them and by the time they got on everyone was so tired of sitting around that they were well primed to let loose a little bit, and well wasted also. Shawn Colvin was kinda good too I heard but did a short set and she Tracy and Jewel were, predictably, overwhelmed by the size of the venue. That brings us to Jewel who I know played YWMFM and WWSYS(boo, sell out), but she didn't yodel(yeah, didn't sell out) and she also did Satellite and two other songs, Fading Away I think, the people who told me about the show didn't know much of Jewel's stuff, and nothing that wasn't on the album. No RaceCar Driver, Foolish Games, or Carnivore though, I heard. All in all an overly long show that could have been compacted, sped up, there was like a hour long interval with no music between two of the smaller artists in the beginning, Leah and Patti R maybe? But everyone said it was worth 30 bucks to see artists that they wouldn't otherwise get a chance to see live. The people telling me all this were all girls but I do know 2 guys who went. They said Jewel was all right and the same for Tracy but that they weren't suited for this kind of show, they had been to last year's Jingle Ball with Dave Matthews and they said it was much mre energetic last year and that they were basically there to see No Doubt. Even the girls commented that the female theme was fine but that there should have been more of a mix of uptempo versus acoustic, slower music like what they had. Garbage, Cranberries, Melissa Etheridge, Sonic Youth, and Tori Amos were mentioned as possible substitutes that would have given the show more variety. Oh well, I said I thought it was sell-out mainstream crap from the beginning, so I guess I was right to an extent. I was kinda pissed when I heard about acoustic "Possession" and "Fast Car" and "Run Baby Run" but knew I would have been pissed off at how short Jewel's set was. There was also supposedly throngs of teeny boppers and just a general corporate feel in the air. And I wouldn't want to get the wrong impression of Jewel or Sarah by the playing at such an unfit venue. A couple of the people who told me about the show said that Jewel was so much better more intimate and friendly with the crowd, and put more into her songs, when they saw her here at my college opening for Dylan last year. I mean, at least she did a forty minute set, 12 songs, not five. Oh well... Later, Sean Hooks ------------------------------ End of jewel-digest V1 #840 ***************************
