We're all friends here and you're not going to win yourself any points by being rude. Putting that aside, however, what I watched of the Billboard Awards show last night reminded me of what Jewel said in her recent note to the list about "ultra-cool hipsters and slick all-hype fast-talkers." They definitely seemed to be on display last night, right down to the Vegas setting. I found it interesting that Smashing Pumpkins, Shania Twain, and one or two others ("awards not given out during this broadcast") apparently declined their invitations, without the "Sorry, I'm in Japan" excuse Alanis used. Too bad, 'cause I performances by either/both of them would have livened the show up a bit; certainly they could have taken the place of that painfully unfunny routine from Carrot Top which actually drove me away for awhile. However, I'm just rambling. Jewel's appearance was good, the show itself was weak, even for an award-show. Leave it at that. For the Sarah list: The new song is the "grittiest" song I've heard from Sarah thus far. And what's the deal with Ash's platinum blond look? He looks like someone dropped a bucket of white-out on his head... For the Jewel list: Did anyone else see Mark (the guitarist) almost freak out when he realized the bass player had the intro bass line of WWSYS in the wrong key? Thus making the logic vs. creative thing irrelevant. Of course, who am I to talk....I'm right-handed...and I've already gotten around to naming my TI-82 Graphing Calculator! Also, has anyone ever heard of cases where someone's CORPUS COLLOSUM was severed? ( For those that don't know, the Corpus Collosum is the one and only connection on your brain that brings together your left and right lobes. ) I heard of a case where this happened. Apparently he was right-handed, thus when he had the Corpus Collosum severed ( by surgery ) he could only conciously control the right side of his body. ***Alert! Funny Part! Time to start paying attention*** In addition, ( this is factual ) his wife would repeatedly tell him that, ( and I quote ) : "Lefty hates me! Lefty's trying to kill me!" The guy couldn't believe it. And he never did. It wasn't until three days later, when the doctor made a house call to see how he was doing, that the doctor found the man's entire left side of his body doing everything in it's power to kill him! Pretty odd, and I wanted to know if any of you have heard of it. ***Funny Part has ceased! You may delete*** Also ( continuing on this random topic ) in class we were studying Artificial Intelligence, and it's pretty interesting the advantages that humans have over computers. For example, in chess, computers may have the ability to look deep in the game ( not even today's computers or computer's for the next 50 years will be able to solve the game though, even if they do defeat the greatest human ) yet they must tedious examine EVERY POSSIBLE move to be made! Even when this is done, they've made little progress in analyzing the 10 ^ 120 moves that can be mode toward checkmate. However, humans, in a mere glance, can eliminate MILLIONS of poor, unhelpful moves. Another interesting topic concerning AI, is the added bonus we, as humans, have obtained. We have a brain, computers have a running program, we have a "mind", computers have nothing of the sort. We're discussing the difference between the brain and the mind. Also, when will a computer be able to pass the "Turing Test", wherein, a computer is set in a room with a human being. There is a second human in another building that is hooked to a network that connects all three. When AI is finally correct, and is successful, is when the computer can chat with the second human, and the two humans can converse, and the second human can't decide who's who. Your Jewel is on TV." Can't they just get up and use the intercom. Then I put the words together, Jewel, Billboard Awards. Just like an Olympic star, I fly up the stairs. I'm standing their panting like a dog and the beautiful vision of Jewel appears on the screen. In the background my family is making comments about my heavy breathing and my obsession with Jewel. "You never come that fast when I ask you to help carry in the groceries." Kathy tells me to calm down. "You're to old to be acting like this. Vanessa is older than Jewel." All I can hear are Jewels beautiful voice. Can you imagine the people that don't know who she is were saying. They are probably trying to figure out what movie or TV show she is from. She looked like a leading lady from a major movie. She was stunning. I can't wait to see her on Thursday in San Diego. OK, I've caught my breath and I'm sitting down. Let me just make a few comments about the rest of the show. For almost twenty years, I had been a subscriber to Billboard. You had to read it if you were in the industry. Overall the show was like the magazine, just a forum for the music industry. Boring and very much what you expect. Every award recipient made the same canned comments. "I want to thank my fans, the record label, radio and retail." Some were also thanking God. Many of the winners should be thanking God because it is only a miracle that their untalented asses won. Besides Jewel, there were a few good moments. I liked Carrot Top. Any more of him would have been to much but he did make me laugh. Celine Dion suprised me. My sister-in-law made me listen to her CD. I thought she had a nice voice but she was too MOR for me. But seeing her perform made a difference. She has an intensity that I like. Something like a Helen Reddy "I Am Woman" intensity. Rod Stewart was pretty good. But pretty good isn't good enough. Southside Johnny would have done a killer cover of the same song. Same could be said for Joe Cocker. Z.Z Top aren't the same since I gave up drinking. I need my Jack Danials! Madonna even came to the show straight from her bedroom. She was still wearing her bath robe. Has any other artist ever reinvented themselves more times than Madonna. Yea, one person Dennis Rodman. Don't make fun of me but I am going to see Evita when it opens. So I talked about Jewels looks. I'm only expressing my human emotions. But Kathy doesn't understand. She said she was getting me a Jewel blow-up doll for Christmas. Oh yea, and my very own pillow for my new place to sleep on the couch. Igor ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Dec 1996 03:28:23 -0500 (EST) From: "Kevin B. Not that I particularly consider that to be a bad thing (heck, Van is one of my all-time favorite singer/songwriters), it's just that I have trouble taking anyone too seriously if I can pinpoint exactly where their musical style was lifted from. Am I off-base with this accusation, and if I listened to more of their music would an individual identity begin to emerge, or are their fans (possibly, though I hesitste to even mention it, out of ignorance of the "original"?) giving them somewhat more musical credit than they're actually worth? Trent Smith P.S. On the same tangent, I heartily recommend Van Morrison's 1968 album "Astral Weeks" to absolutely anyone who likes music or poetry (which, presumably, includes everyone reading this). Even if you have his "greatest hits" album with "Moondance," "Brown-Eyed Girl," etc., you're still missing the true essence of what makes him great if you haven't heard this album (which, I believe, was a commercial failure when originally released). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Dec 1996 05:36:45 -0500 (EST) From: Taliesin Athor Govannon Subject: Re: Then we can go to the Flats! Pooh, We have some different tastes in music, you and me, but I really respect what you had to say to the list. Really pretty well thought out, and a lot of good points. The way different people develop different tastes in music has always fascinated me. Why do some people love country, some "Alternative", some rap, some metal, etc. etc. Obviously, upbringing, the music available of your local radio, and what your peers in school listen to plays a big part. I grew up in southern California, graduating high school in 1991. My first cassette ever was Michael Jackson "Thriller", and second was "Footloose" movie soundtrack. As fate may be, I'm a white male, upper middle class, and went to private school. And being where I was, KROQ, a revolutionary "Alternative" station, came in clear on my radio. (this station was way before the current jump by everyone and their mother onto the "Alternative" bandwagon, and I can't believe how many bands mentioned KROQ dj's or KROQ in their album thank you's.) That music caught my attention and I went with it. Yet my younger brother listens to only Christian music, and my step brother, who is the same age as me, same classes, etc. loves very mainstream top 40 and heavy metal. I don't. That's the beauty of the world: Diversity! I respect your opinions because you seem to be using your brain. I don't listen to Mariah or Whitney because it just doesn't do it for me. I happen to love Tracy Chapman though, and boy is she ever popular again all the sudden! I couldn't give a rip how popular a musician is. Some people I like happen to be, some I've never heard on the radio , and stumbled onto by word of mouth or experimenting at the used CD bin. Radio is very close minded, playing the same song over and over again, ad nauseum, as if nothing else exists by an artist. Gee, ever heard WWSYS on the radio? Jewel's a rather prolific songwriter, but the everyday person who isn't an EDA and hasn't been to a show doesn't likely know this. They are bombarded with WWSYS so many times it repels them. I've seen it. Midnight Oil is another great example. I really like them, and had a best friend that was Australian when I was younger, so was exposed to more Midnight Oil. The general USA got to hear "Beds are Burning" and thought Diesel and Dust was their debut album, when in actuality they had like 6 or 7 great albums before that, and some good ones since. I love this list and some others I'm on (Tracy Chapman, Innocence Mission, Midnight Oil). We meet interesting people, have great discussions, trade tapes, and frequently, turn each other on to other cool music we may not stumble across in the jungle of radio. I have really eclectic tastes (alternative, neo-folk, world beat/reggae, big band/swing, jazz, ....all sorts of stuff). No radio station is ever going to cover everything I like. I don't happen to listen really to country, or metal, or most top 40, or rap/R &B. That's me. Not everybody likes Jewel, but hey, we do live in the "melting pot" turned "seething cauldron" that is the USA. Many cultures, many backgrounds, many types of music. The more open minded and accepting everyone is, on any issue, even less life-and -death issues such as musical preference, the better! Jewel is not a god, but a very talented singer. Kurt Jensen ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Dec 1996 07:27:10 -0500 From: gregdunn@indy.net (Greg Dunn) Subject: SJC: my 30 seconds of fame Woke up, as usual, to the clock radio playing the only station around here that seems to have music as its primary morning program -- WTTS. As I was listening to the usual, unusual pogression of tunes (today had Steely Dan, Duncan Sheik and Sheryl Crow in less than 10 minutes) I became aware that the morning guy program director dude was talking about his promo appearance at the sports shop last night. I perked up a little, since that's where I met him and gave him the Jewel tape. Sure enough, he flows right from the promo thingie into a description of an interesting incident where some whacko Jewel fan cornered him and forced him at frisbeepoint to listen to something called an Agnelfood tape... No, actually he recounted our meeting dead accurately (including the fact that we both saw her in August '95), praised Jewel's music, called the tape a 'nice gift', and used it to leverage a station promo about how you should listen to WTTS if you like good stuff like Jewel's music. Oh, and he picked up on the other point, which was that some of the taped material might be on the upcoming album. Free plug for the new album! (I reiterate, the tape was a compilation of treed concert stuff and none of it was JewelStock source material. I just chose a mix of good performances and stuff we hope will be on the new album. And it had the standard disclaimer about "only for Jewel fans" on the J-card) So hats off to someone who listens to the music *and* to his audience. Anyone within receiving distance (Central and Southern Indiana FM listeners) should know that Rich Anton of WTTS is the rarest of birds, a program director who actually tries to make his station diverse and listener-oriented. Obviously, he's receptive to Jewel requests! OK, I'm done babbling. It's just so cool to wake up and hear a radio personality going on about something nice you did for him. :-) - -- | Greg Dunn | Every year is getting shorter, | | GregDunn@aol.com | never seem to find the time | | gregdunn@indy.net | Plans that either come to nought | | GregDunn@compuserve.com | or half a page of scribbled lines | | http://members.aol.com/gregdunn | Pink Floyd | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Dec 1996 07:40:50 -0500 (EST) From: the emperor of smurfs Subject: Re: If you want a copy of the latest treed tape, read this Mike said: > I am one of Dave Dicicco's semi-permanent volunteer part-time whatever i hate to pick nits, but it is spelled DiCicco. generations of italian peasants would be spinning in their graves if i didn't correct this. for thos of you wondrin' how it is pronounced: Dee-Cheek-o peace, dave *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Dave DiCicco peaches@dmapub.dma.org "Innocence Maintained" is a moderated, news only email list providing its subscribers with timely information about Jewel Kilcher.
