I got up at 7am and took a jacuzzi. Went to work (not the highlight) and left early to go see Jewel at UNH tonight. The shirts they had on sale were boring and only had Bodean stuff. The only thing that mentioned Jewel was the promoters shirts and it had her name on it in probably 36 Font size. I didn't buy one. After the first group got over (YEAH-not into alternative/grung music), they had this guy dressed in a Santa suit and he was handing out bags. He came up to me and gave me a bag. It had the promoters shirt in it with some other things. Yeah, I didn't have to buy it! The group Bodean was that bad. A relief after Nada Surf. Then Jewel came out. A sight for sore eyes. She was wearing her white tank type shirt, a black jacket, a really short navy blue (what I could guess from the lighting and having to look through binoculars) and brown shoes with about a 2 inch heal. Oh yeah, black tights. I could say more, but it would make people mad that it came from a female. :) Anyways, she performed for about 1.5 hours, which included 3 encores. The others were 45-1 hour. Phew. Jewel was wonderful/awesome. Afterwards, she hung by the stage and started signing things. I hurdled over a few chairs and waited for her to come towards me. When she drew in close, I handed her about 7 or so grape lollipops and I got her to sign my ticket stub. I noticed she was signing with a permanent marker and quickly asked her to sign the Jewel concert shirt that I was wearing (which I got from the Hampton Beach Casino concert). She signed the sleeve. I figured that was a more appropiate spot to sign than having her sign the front of the shirt. AND THE BIGGEST NEWS IS: I recorded the concert. . Because I used a tape recorder, and got screwed from my original seats because of ticketmaster, the quality isn't that great, but could probably knock some distortion out re-recording it. I'm listening to it for the 2nd time. 1st time, was while I was making my 1.5 hour car ride home and now while writing to you all. Before I can start taking requests for the show, lets see if anyone else recorded it or if someone might give me ideas on how to make the tape sound a little louder. I'm going to try it on my system (which isn't bad) having a equalizer and various stages of dolby. I'll talk to all you EDAs tomorrow. I'm going to sleep with such happy thoughts. Goodnight to you all and hope your dreams are as sweet as mine. I have to admit that I've lost touch with the list recently; I've just been skimming most of the posts over the last few hectic weeks. As I am sure others will admit, I will always read the well-thought out posts (write, edit, re-edit, sleep on it, re-edit, post ... right Dennis Harris??) of a few. One of these EDA's is Alan Bershaw (aka Mr BB) - his posts always have highly relevent information. So thanks Mr. BB, here's one EDA who appreciates the info! Just got back into Boston from a 70 mile jaunt north to catch Jewel's first New England appearance since returning from Europe. I wouldn't have known about it had it not been for this list, so thanks!! The concert at the University of NH featured Nada Surf, the Bodeans, and Jewel. It was really odd, because the entire crowd was seated. So Nada Surf and the Bodeans would be jamming and the entire front row was SITTING DOWN! I've seen wilder movie theaters!!! But the format seemed to be perfect for Jewel - a lot of her music is best heard sitting down. I've been to 6 shows now, and I really wasn't expecting to be very enthralled by this one (I actually thought the Bodeans would take the show away) - I know this is heresay, but I'm being honest! I was really wrong!!! Jewel was phenomenal!!! The sound wasn't spectacular, but the crowd was respectful (and quiet!!!), probably because no alcohol or smoking allowed - all we had was Jewel to give us a high! Lots of teenyboppers around, so this twentybopper felt his age, but the young crowd really seemed to energize Jewel. I brought a friend from school with me, and she was completely enthralled. This was MUCH more pleasant than the drunk, loud guy who was next to me at Lupo's!!! I remembered most of the set: Pieces of You Little Sister Near You Always Deep Water Satellite Fading Away Band Enters... You Were Meant For Me I'm Sensitive Sometimes It Be That Way Foolish Games Morning Song Grey Matter Angle Standing By Chime Bells Encore.... Who Will Save Your Soul ??? (she said this was inspired by the Democratic National Convention, something about older politicians giving up hope?, I think she played it at the Boston Common...) Amen I know some EDA's were planning on being there, sorry I didn't set a time to meet. I raced up there after work, and didn't think I'd have any time to spare... Oh yeah, so I'd better talk about how I finally met Jewel!!! My friend Cristina and I decided to head down to the floor level to get a better look at Jewel. She came over to a bunch of kids begging for her autograph. Man, did I feel silly, but sucked it up figuring it'd be a good momento. I gave her my ticket stub to sign (score!!), and asked her if her band was going to be with her in Vegas tomorrow (Wed) night because I thought Foolish Games with the band would be perfect (like she would listen to me!). Funny thing is that she was adamant that she would be at Madison Square Garden tomorrow night! Now the gal is a hard worker, but Vegas and NYC in the same night?!? Actually her MSG gig is on Thursday night...I'm pretty embarrassed that I would know Jewel's schedule better than she does!! She signed my stub and Cristina claims I was shaking uncontrollably! Man, the girl is younger than I am, how could I be intimidated by that!! Fame I guess! As Cristina said to me, the album (POY) does NOT do Jewel justice!! She is SOOO much more powerful live. Any EDA's who haven't had the chance to see her, do so if at all possible!!!!! Good night, all ... and let us know YOUR concert stories!!! For example, had I known of my ambidextrousity at a younger age, I could have learned to write equally well with both hands. However, as this quality was only diagnosed at the age of ten, my right hand already became accustomed to the requirments of this action (writing), and will, as a result, always be my prefered hand when writing. It's the morning after and I can actually talk about the show rather than giddily saying, "Wow! I met and EDA and I got an autograph!" *Disclaimer* This is not a full set-list. I thought of bringing a paper and pen with me to write them all down, but I didn't think of it when I left my dorm to walk down to the Whit. She opened (as I said last night) with "Pieces of You" which I still think was a strange opening for a family Christmas show. The group of 9 (?) year old boys in front of me starting giggling when the "faggot" verse started (Jewel talked about how great it would be if one day people got out their lighters and the world sang along "faggoooooott" because it was okay to be gay). Instantaneously, lighters appeared from pockets and with the darkness of the arena, it looked pretty neat. She then went to "Little Sister" (by this time, I'm trying unsuccessfully to figure out what it going through the mind of the mothers of the boys (oh, and one 7-ish girl) in front of me. (every song is out of order from here on in) THere was a pretty good balance between solo and w/ band performances. She didn't introduce her band until the very last song. The band did a version of "Foolish Games" which was the best I heard (comparing to Hampton Beach and Boston Casino Ballroom). Jewel has a lot more movement on the stage than she used to (she was almost down on her knees during the "down on my knees line"). Also, I think she cut her hair since this summer. It's shoulder length now. There was a very loud version of "Sometimes it be that Way" (minus the Goldilocks verse :( ) She asked for requests about two or three songs into it, but she didn't play the ones I heard yelled out ("Painters" and (naturally) "Race Car Driver"). She played, "Satellite," "Grey Matter," I think "Fade Away" (Lisa? Help me out. Did she play that?) "Angel Standing By," "Morning Song," "You Were Meant for Me," ... what else. Somewhere about 45 minutes into it, the "YODEL!!!!!!!!" yells started (disproving my theory that it's only the wildly drunk people who yell that) ... she said she'd yodel and kept playing. There was an encore or two (I think two) with "Who Will Save Your Soul" (holding out the last "your" much longer than humanly possible), "Chime Bells" (you'd think people would stop cheering long enough to *hear* the yodelling... they quieted down after the first round) ... and absolutely BREATHTAKING version of "Amen." It was absolutely incredible. She left with a standing ovation and cheers galore. What else? (oh yeah, "I'm Sensitive" and "Near You Always") The WERZ people introduced the staff about fourteen times and after the last prize was given away, my friend Eric said "Let's go find Jewel." I just kind of went along, thinking "Shyeah, right" ... we ran into a few friends from campus, they made fun of Eric and went back to their dorm. We saw a bit of a mob gathered in the corner and figured that it was probably her, so we tried to follow but she was leaving. So Eric jumped a few seats with me following, and we ended up being about two feet away from her and she signed our tickets for us. (that's when I met Lisa for about two seconds). Eric was thrilled and we went over to Lord (one of the dorms on campus) to gloat that waiting for Jewel was not all that stupid because *flash out our tickets* we got her autograph. They were jealous. Walked across campus to our respective dorms (Eric saying that he was going to gloat some more) but I went to sleep shortly after (it's the end of the semester crunch -- I haven't been sleeping) I bet there were other songs... but someone's going to need to help me out. Lisa? Was anyone else there? I hope I don't sound too shallow/materialistic when discussion the autograph. It was such a good show with some of the best renditions of her songs that I've heard. This weekend I'll be in Miami watching a banner hosted into the rafers of what I remember as Joe Robbie Stadium in honor of Don Shula. This means missing the raising of Islanders #9 Clark Gillies and two or three more Jewel concerts, which is a damn shame because I wanted to break twenty in one year. It's always nice to get some fun in the Miami sun in December. I lost my lighter at that show too, but not until after waving it for Jewel. There were no 9-year olds sitting in front of me then, though. But there was a drunk guy... a *really* drunk guy. He was funny, before the show started he was already plastered and stumbling around on these very dangerous steep concrete steps, yelling a bunch of stuff about Christmas. So I gave him a bead necklace (I had a bunch of them and I was giving them away to everyone). And he hugged me and told everyone I was the greatest guy in the world. - ---/- JenniferY@aol.com sed... >Can we start a "I hate Ticketmaster" newsgroup as well?? ;) > alt.ticketmaster.sucks.sucks.sucks or alt.ticketmaster.ripped.me.off no! (I know, you're too short to be pet food...) As well, I'm glad Mr. BB cleared up that Noah thing, which seemed extremely odd. From everything I've seen and my limited personal experience, it seemed to me that Alan being rude enough to a fellow EDA to scare them off the list would be as unlikely as the sun rising in the west tomorrow. I know that "we are everday angels, we're sensitive and we want to stay that way," but yikes! that Noah was REALLY (over)sensitive.... By the way, I was very happy for those lucky EDA's who got to meet Jewel for the first time yesterday. It's always so nice to hear those stories. Ain't life grand? Have a good day everone! I've heard a song recently sung by a female and wondered if any of you could identify it. It's a wistful melody with some lovely harmonies about a woman who loves 'little dudes'. One of the lyrics is like this: Where are you little dude Don't you know I'm in love with you You don't have to shave much around that smile Please don't think I'm a pedophile It's one of those odd little songs that stick in your mind and I can't rest until I find out. Some don't have the time or desire to interact with us but still appreciate her. Some neither know about us or aren't serious enough about her to care anyway.
